Bitter Truth

B Y A P R I L M A E M . L A B R A D O R

THE CORONAVIRUS TEACHES US TWO THINGS:

HUMANITY AND CLIMATE ACTION

The coronavirus will test our

principles, values, and shared

humanity. Scapegoats are never far

away when anxiety and doubt set in.

A nation cannot handle this alone,

and no part of our communities will

be overlooked if we approach this

global problem efficiently.

People are suffering from the little

things. Take panic buying as an

example. We can only imagine what

the people will do if there is an actual

food shortage in this country. The

disease has also brought bigotry,

prejudice, and racism. Viruses don’t

discriminate, but humans do. We

should stop xenophobia, stop panic

buying, and start shopping

responsibly. We can work together as

one to overcome the challenges

of this pandemic.

viruses don't

discriminate,

humans do.

On a brighter note, countries that

are under extreme lockdown to

prevent the spread of coronavirus

(COVID-19) have encountered

unexpected returns. The

environmental effects of the

pandemic in some countries led to

a substantial decrease in pollution

and greenhouse gas emissions.

That is estimated to have wiped

out a quarter or more of the

country’s carbon dioxide emission

over the past two weeks!

Bitter Truth

Recent observations have shown

that strict social distancing and selfquarantine

procedures are also likely

to have an impact on a city's level of

air pollution.

Quality-monitoring satellites run by

NASA and the European Space

Agency have reported significant air

pollution declines. The pandemic,

however, is temporary and can still

be reversed. But experts warned

that observed improvements are

transient and that as cities,

countries, and economies bounce

back, so will pollution - unless

significant infrastructure or social

practices are adopted.

Also, we need to take a moment and

think about what we want to happen

and what we need to do once

everything goes back to normal.

Maybe we can reflect on the way we

are being governed or how issues

such as health care, poverty,

infrastructure, and pollution are

being addressed.

If we can create plans for other

catastrophic events such as this

pandemic, then maybe we will be

more prepared. It's also possible that

we will be able to prevent these

disasters from happening. There is

still hope.

WALANG K W A R T A

SA QUARANTINE

by Evangeline G. Villa De Gracia

The Philippines is one of the high-risk

countries to contract COVID-19 from

Wuhan, China due to its proximity

compared to other countries. As a result,

the Philippine government made

proactive measures to contain the spread

of the virus through temporary closure of

establishments, mandatory quarantine,

and suspension of the majority of mass

transportation until April 12, 2020. As

“enhanced community quarantine” takes

effect in Luzon, the government

implemented stricter rules in terms of

obligatory home confinement,

suspension of transportation lines,

regulation and provision of food and

essential health services, and heightened

presence of uniformed personnel to

enforce isolation procedures. The

question is, apart from containing the

virus transmission through social

isolation and strict home containment,

how will the "enhanced community

quarantine" affect millions of people

currently on such restriction?

They live in the system

wherein if they don't show

up for work, they will not

get paid and these people

still go to work and

risk their lives than to

die of starvation.

With some major cities across the country

closing down businesses due to COVID-19,

unfortunately, the economic fall also has a

tremendous effect on the well-being of the

families and communities, especially for the

vulnerable families—loss of income, missed

meals and reduced health care. Just waiting

with the crowd, their concern on how to feed

their families outweighs their concern about

getting infected.

They live in a system wherein if they don't

show up for work, they will not get paid,

which is the reason why these people still go

to work and risk their lives than to die of

starvation. In this pandemic, there is a very

high risk that households will lose income

and businesses will fall as a result of the

adverse effects COVID-19 has on our

declining economy. Low-wage workers have

the most burden on them as many hourlywage

earners working in the food and service

industry will experience long layoffs. Lack of

financial resources caused by the pandemic

will further hurt the poor as already

manifested by their inability to stock up

foods and other necessities. Those with

fewer financial resources are also more

vulnerable to infections and more

susceptible to the adverse economic effects

of the pandemic because they live in the

unhealthiest conditions as compared to the

rest of society.

With all of this happening, what is

the government doing to cushion

the economic fall and health risks

of the pandemic for the most

vulnerable? Are these people

included in the National Action

Plan? And in times like this, a

one-time type measure will not go

far. The government should do more

to help them.

We all have to admit, we were never ready

for this, and the people didn't have any

buffer to bear such load. The government

should take this not only as a health crisis

but also as a financial crisis because no one

knows how severe this will be and how long

this will last.
