HOOKKEEPER ALTERNATIVES<br />
I have a tip for you to share with your fly rod building<br />
customers. The customary location for a hook-keeper<br />
is right in front of the fore-grip. It is much more useful<br />
if you mount it near the mid-point of the rod. That<br />
way you can loop your leader/tippet around your reel<br />
spool like a pulley <strong>and</strong> keep your line to leader knot out<br />
past the tip top. I started doing this on the fly rods I<br />
build for myself <strong>and</strong> it prevents a lot of hassles when<br />
you’re having to relocate while waist-deep in the current.<br />
Alan Berglund (Actually, I wind my tippet/leader<br />
around the spool too, <strong>and</strong> just hook the fly to my uppermost<br />
stripping guide. That way, I’m also “ready to<br />
fish” without struggling with the fly <strong>and</strong> leader to get<br />
