Dear Colleague
As we highlighted in our communication before Easter Break, we are grateful for the support from
all practices; open or closed
As such, we have been in close contact with the 3 rd Sector, Welsh Government and our colleagues
in Primary Care; notably Pharmacy for help with the medicines delivery program for the estimated
90,000 patients across Wales who cannot get to their local pharmacy for repeat prescriptions.
Attached is the volunteer role description for a volunteer medicines delivery driver for anyone
interested in volunteering for our NHS at this time this is specifically for any DBS checked staff
(non clinicians too) who are interested in volunteering can contact our COVID mailbox directly
COVID-19.Pharmacy.Prescribing@gov.wales
If there are family members/neighbours/friends of clinical staff who are interested in volunteering
(and not DBS checked); we are currently working on the best place for them to send their
expression of interest, if you are non DBS checked and interested in volunteering I will collate a list
to send to Welsh Government to work through.
We hope that there might be someone you can pass this on (maybe staff in your practice who are
furloughed who still want to help)
Colleagues who are GOC registered and/or who hold higher qualifications we are also looking for
volunteers to work in a clinical capacity in primary care settings. We will be in touch in the coming
weeks with further details of how you can help be part of our wonderful NHS
Regards, Sali
Volunteer Role Description
Title:
Responsible to:
Base:
Volunteer Medicines Delivery Driver
Responsible Pharmacist within assigned community pharmacy(ies)
Local catchment area to the pharmacy
What is a Volunteer Medicines Delivery Driver?
Working with local pharmacies, you will deliver prescriptions to very vulnerable patients who
are unable to collect their medicines themselves.
What’s in it for you?
You will:
• Be part of a network of volunteers who are providing assistance across Wales at this
difficult time
• Contribute to your local community by helping those who are in particular need
• Meet new people in your local area
• Learn more about volunteer organisations in Wales
What’s involved?
You’ll be given access to an application called Pro Delivery Manager that local pharmacists
will use to identify when they have prescriptions needing collection. If you are willing and
available, you’ll be able to volunteer to collect the medicines and deliver them to a very
grateful member of the public. Using your own method of transport, the Welsh Government
will reimburse your fuel costs. You will only have the individual’s contact details, not any
information about their medicines. You won’t be expected to provide any advice regarding
the medicines you’re delivering.
This role will be suitable for people who…
… have their own method of transport; depending on the distances involved this may be a
vehicle, for which you’ll need valid insurance and a driving licence. In some areas it may be
appropriate for a volunteer to use a bicycle for medicines delivery, for which the necessary
safety equipment must be worn (ie cycling helmet).
Because you’ll be carrying medicines for people, it’s important that you do not have a
criminal history. It would be preferable (but not essential) to have had a background check
made (DBS or CRB). For this reason, you may be asked a little about your history and
current circumstances and we may need to seek a basic reference.
Extra information
This is a Welsh national initiative, covering all areas of the country. We’ll aim to pair you with
community pharmacies in your local area. You will not need to continually check with the
pharmacist, you will receive a notification via Pro Delivery Manager if there’s a delivery
needed in your area.
Time commitment
You’ll be able to volunteer for deliveries by accepting them through your App; therefore if it’s
not convenient for you, or you need to self-isolate, then that’s fine. You’ll be able to contribute
as much as you feel able to. We would ask, however, if you do have to self-isolate that you
advise your chosen pharmacies.
Staff contact
If you are interested, please contact our mailbox and we will be delighted to get in touch with
you;
COVID-19.pharmacy.prescribing@gov.wales
Training
We have produced a training resource and we’ll be happy to help you with any questions
you may have. There are two elements to the training package; a package on how to be a
delivery driver and a package on how to use the Pro Delivery Manager App.
Support
You’ll establish a good rapport with your local pharmacists. Support and assistance with
using the App will be available from the Pro Delivery Manager team. Questions from
members of the public will be dealt with by relevant community pharmacist. If you have any
concerns over the health or well-being of the individual you are delivering to this should be
highlighted to the relevant community pharmacist.
Resources
If you are successful in this role you will need to download the Pro Delivery Manager App,
log in details will then be provided to you directly by the Pro Delivery Manager team.
Expenses
Fuel expenses will be reimbursed according to mileage calculated via the Pro Delivery
Manager App.
The do’s and don’ts of volunteering with the Welsh Government
• Do let us know if you need support to carry out your volunteering role.
• Do ensure you are clear on the expectations of your role.
• Do keep in touch with your assigned pharmacy(ies).
• Do ensure you have a safe volunteering environment. Make sure you tell your
responsible pharmacist at your assigned pharmacy(ies) if there are any issues or you
have concerns.
• The prescriptions are private for the patient and therefore the prescription bags must
not be tampered with.
• If, for any reason, you have been unable to make the delivery, the prescription must
be returned to the pharmacy, so that we know the patient has not received it as they
will still require it.
Enjoy engaging with some very grateful patients in your community; you are making a huge
difference to them.
