Lest we forget

In the summer of 2014,

to commemorate the

100th anniversary of

the start of World War I,

888,246 ceramic poppies

were draped from the

Tower of London and

“planted” in its former

moat (now grassed).

Each poppy was

handmade, each

represented a soldier

from Britain and the

former OK TO British PRINT colonies

who

___ As

died

is

during “the

war to end all wars,”

and ___ With each changes was planted marked

by one of hundreds of

volunteers.

smaller scale, to the New

Jersey service men and

women who gave their

lives during World War I.

McElroy’s plan –

Project Poppy – calls

for 3,837 metal poppies

to cascade from the left

corner of Haddonfield

Memorial High School

and across Veterans

Memorial Grove, the

grassed area in front of

the school.

The installation will be

in place from Memorial

Day to Independence

Day. That was the plan,

anyway. Whether that

timing will hold remains

to be seen, thanks to

COVID-19.

But it’s “full steam

ahead” for making the

poppies. Individuals,

families, and community

organizations are invited

to purchase poppy

kits, at $20 apiece,

and contribute their

creations to the project.
