The closure of businesses,

schools, and houses of worship

has forced many of us to develop

ways to do things differently.

What changes in routines or

habits have you made that might

become permanent?

Haddonfield’s JOE

MURPHY has

become “much better

at using Skype,” and

has learned to Zoom.

“I’ll incorporate them

into my business,” he

says, “but they will

never replace faceto-face

discussions.”

Joe also is working

out and taking piano

lessons online, “for

the moment.”

HERB HESS of

Haddonfield

recently crafted a

birthday gift for his

son – “something

I haven’t done for

years.” Herb says he

enjoyed it, “so I plan

to spend more time

on things like that.”

JOHN and LINDA

STOKES of

Haddonfield are

desperate to dine

out again. “But when

we’re having drinks

with friends,” says

John,” I’ll probably

keep some of them

at arm’s length.”

Somerdale’s BEN

SANTORO says he

is working hard to

maintain his routine.

“I get up at the same

time, shower, shave,

have breakfast, read

the paper,” he says. “It

would be easy to turn

into a slug. Not me!”

JAMIE ORLANDO,

an audiologist from

West Deptford, says

that the increased

use of telehealth at

this time is proving

that “in-person visits

will be less necessary

in the future.” And the

success of distance

learning may mean

that snow days will

be a thing of the past.

“Sorry, kids!”

Homebound

college senior

COLE POLLACK,

of Haddonfield, has

developed a new

habit: riding a bicycle

every day. “I’m really

enjoying it,” Cole says.

“It’s something I will

keep doing, for sure.”

Commissioners set interest rate

on overdue taxes at 0%

During their special meeting on Tue Apr 14, the

Borough commissioners set the interest rate at 0%

for property taxes paid after the due date of May 1,

2020 but on or before May 31, 2020.

Their action was in recognition of the financial

difficulties some residents are experiencing,

because of the COVID-19 pandemic.

The due date for second quarter tax payments is

May 1. The Borough grants a ten-day grace period

and does not charge interest on payments received

during the grace period. The commissioners’ action

effectively increases the grace period by 30 days

– but only on property taxes for the current period.

The 0% rate does not apply to any back taxes.

Property taxes that are not paid by May 31, 2020

will be subject to interest at the rate of 8% per

annum up to $1,500 and 18% per annum over $1,500,

calculated from the due date (May 1) until the date

the payment is actually received.

Although the Borough Hall is closed to the

general public, payments can still be made “in

person” by placing them in the black mailbox in

front of the building. Place the tax bill and check

in an envelope marked “Tax Office.” The box is

emptied daily.

Paying by mail? The address is 242 Kings Highway

E, Haddonfield NJ 08033.

Temporary

funds approved

During their special

meeting on April 14,

the commissioners

added $9,224,891 to

the temporary budget

appropriations.

They took this action

because the normal

budget process has

been delayed due to the

COVID-19 pandemic and

the commissioners need

to ensure that sufficient

funds will be available

for the municipality to

continue to operate

effectively into the fall.

Action of this kind is

permitted by NJ statute

(40A:4-20).

The emergency

temporary appropriation

will be provided for in

budget.

McElroy’s plan –

New way to

support stores

The spread of the

coronavirus (COVID-

19) is having a

devastating impact on

small businesses in

Haddonfield. Many have

closed temporarily;

others are operating at

greatly reduced levels.

To help keep some

cash flowing, several

business owners have

created “Haddonfield

Here For Good!” It’s a

way for residents and

others to support and

show appreciation for

their favorite businesses.

The concept is simple:

Go online and purchase

a $20 tee-shirt. All shirts

have the “Haddonfield

Here For Good!” graphic

on the back, while each

participating business

has its own logo on the

left chest.

If you can’t decide

which business you want

to support, order the

generic “Haddonfield”

shirt, or make a

donation.

$10 from each sale

goes to the business.

The more shirts sold,

the more money the

business gets. 100%

of proceeds benefit

the small businesses

of Haddonfield and all

monies collected in the

general fund will be

divided equally among

participating businesses.

When Downtown

Haddonfield gets back

to normal and retail

returns, there will be

special events where

everyone will be invited

to wear their Here For

Good shirts.

Shirts can be

purchased online at

HaddonfieldHereForGood

Primary election date

moved to July 7

On April 8, NJ Governor Phil Murphy signed an

executive order, postponing primary elections

scheduled for Tuesday, June 2 to Tuesday, July 7.

The governor’s action was in response to the

ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

“Preserving basic functions of our democracy

is critical in this unprecedented time,” Governor

Murphy said. “Citizens exercising their right to

vote should not have to risk their safety and the

safety of others in order to make their voices heard.

Postponing our primary elections is a difficult, yet

necessary, choice to ensure that our citizens can

partake in their civic duty of voting.”

The primaries now scheduled for July 7

include President, U.S. Senate, U.S. House of

Representatives, 25th District of the New Jersey

Legislature (parts of Morris and Somerset counties),

and county and municipal elections, as well as

county committee elections.

The U.S. Senate Democratic candidates are

Cory Booker (incumbent) and Lawrence Hamm.

Republican candidates are Eugene T. Anagnos,

Patricia Flanagan, Rikin “Rik” Mehta, Natalie Lynn

Rivera, and Hirsh Singh.

Murphy first ordered

“I have nothing but

Murphy said, “[but we]

Easter drive-by at Brandywine

For an hour and a half, more than one hundred cars looped the circular drive

of Brandywine Living on Warwick Road on Friday, April 10.

Why? So dozens of residents, unable to leave the premises or receive

visitors at Easter because of COVID-19 regulations, could wave to children,

grandchildren, pets, pedestrians, and perfect strangers who came with

decorated cars and handmade signs.

A local online organization, Haddonfield Parents, lead by resident Megan

York Parker, partnered with Brandywine’s director of community relations, Kim

Fasolo, to develop the event. Haddonfield resident Erica DeMichele dressed in

her own Easter Bunny costume for the occasion.

Historical Society invites input

to document the Virus Year

“COVID-19 is history. Let’s record it!”

That’s the thrust of a new initiative the Historical

Society of Haddonfield has launched: a storygathering

project called “Haddonfield Virus Year.”

The Society is inviting its members, and members

of the community generally, to contribute records of

their experiences for posterity.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all of us,”

says Dana Dorman, the Society’s archivist.

“During this challenging time of school and

business closures, social distancing, or even actual

illness, we at the Historical Society can’t help but

wonder – how will this experience be recorded for

future generations?

“Start writing down your experiences,” Dorman

suggests.

“You can do this in any way that feels right for

you: as a letter, as a diary or an activity log, as

a string of sentences. If you don’t want to write,

document your experiences in whatever other ways

feel right for you: photographs, artwork, audio or

video recordings, etc.”

To learn more – and sign up to participate – scan

website: haddonfieldhistory.org.

Caregivers seek support

Because of COVID-19, Interfaith Caregivers is currently unable to provide its

regular services to its elderly and disabled clients – medical appointments and

tests, nutritional needs, and social support.

Even so, its volunteers are continuing the all-important social phone call

program for those who live alone. Also, the organization instituted a foodshopping

program for clients without family support, and trained new

volunteers to reduce the burden on volunteers over the age of 60.

Overseeing these services and coordinating the activities of volunteers

takes considerable time and money, and Interfaith Caregivers is asking the

Haddonfield community to help ensure, in these difficult times, that it will be

able to continue to help neighbors in need. (In 2019, the organization provided

6,887 individual client services.)

HADDONFIELD POST 38

Looking back on our 101-year history

On March 15, 1919, shortly after the signing of the armistice that ended the Great

War hostilities, about 1,000 members of the American Expeditionary Forces gathered

in Paris to discuss a proposal to form a national veterans’ association. During a

second meeting, in St. Louis in May, the group adopted a temporary constitution and

agreed upon a name: The American Legion.

In June 1919, a group of Haddonfield veterans, led by Carlton Webb, petitioned

the new national body for a charter to form a post of the Legion in Haddonfield.

(More than 300 local men and women had served in the armed forces during the

war.) A temporary charter was issued on July 23, 1919 – one hundred and one years

ago this month – designating Haddonfield as Post #38 in New Jersey.

The Post held its meetings in the Parish Hall of Grace Church for some months,

then, with the aid of public subscriptions and a mortgage for $10,000, purchased and

renovated the building at the south-east corner of Kings Highway and Ellis Street

(now Kings Court), formerly occupied by the Haddonfield Post Office. On December

10, 1926, The American Legion granted the Post its permanent charter.

As World War II drew to a close and thousands of local veterans returned home,

it became clear that the Post’s premises could no longer meet its needs. The Post

purchased the Birdwood Club on Hawthorne Avenue for $30,000, and dedicated it on

July 4, 1946. Post 38 rapidly became the largest post in Camden County, despite the

fact that, unlike many posts, it did not have a bar. A mortgage-burning ceremony was

held on March 16, 1957. Major improvements were made to the building in 1971,

following a lightning strike that damaged one-third of the auditorium ceiling.

By the mid-1980s, the cost of maintaining its

expansive headquarters had become a burden, and

the Post sold the property to a developer in 1988.

(To acknowledge the site’s history, the newly created

street off Hawthorne Avenue was named Legion

Lane.) The Post acquired a building on Turnley

Avenue (parallel to Haddon Avenue, connecting

Redman and Euclid) and on November 11, 1989

– Veterans Day – Post 38’s new headquarters were

dedicated. Embedded in the base of the flagpole is a

piece of granite from the original headquarters building, inscribed, “Dedicated to the

past commanders of Post #38.” The Borough renamed the street, Veterans Lane.

The Four Pillars of the Legion are: Veterans Affairs and Rehabilitation, National

Security, Americanism, and Protecting our Children and Youth. Descriptions of the

Post’s activities and projects are published in Haddonfield Today each month.

● Post 38 meets on the second Monday of each month at 129 Veterans Lane, Haddonfield.

To learn more about the Post, membership, programs, and benefits, please visit

Masks for all

Statues in downtown Haddonfield are now

protecting themselves and others from the spread

of COVID-19. One example: “Stanley the Witness,” at

137 Kings Highway East (pictured at left).

Stuart Harting, founder and chair of the

Haddonfield Outdoor Sculpture Trust (HOST),

which has placed more than two dozen sculptures

around the town, has outfitted a number of

sculptures with protective masks. In addition to

“Stanley”: “The Mailman,” outside the Post Office,

and “Steadfast and Loyal,” at 116 Kings Highway E.

Check them out … from a safe distance.

Shopping at Acme? Wear mask!

In a continuing attempt slow the spread of

COVID-19, Gov. Phil Murphy has ordered additional

restrictions for supermarkets and grocery stores.

Supermarkets are now required to limit the

number of customers allowed inside stores at any

one time to a maximum of 50% of capacity. Also, all

staff and customers must now wear face coverings.

(An exception is permitted in cases where a medical

condition inhibits the use of face covering.)

In addition, supermarkets are encouraged to

establish hours of operation that permit access

solely to high-risk individuals.

Lions name Youth of Year

The Haddonfield Area Lions Club has chosen

three outstanding Haddonfield Memorial High

School students to receive its William G. Hansen

Youth of the Year awards.

The honor is given to students showing empathy

and compassion through their many years of

volunteer service.

“The applicants were outstanding and we wish we

could have chosen them all,” said Debra Nussbaum

who chairs the Youth of the Year Committee with

Ellen Ragone. “These students were all busy with

academics and activities, but they made helping

others a priority.”

• Stella DeMarco is the president of the HMHS

Leo Club. “She has been instrumental this year in

helping me behind the scenes in planning events

and serving as a role model for other Leos,” said

Maggie Gammie, the High School’s faculty advisor to

the Leo Club.

• Elliot Ryan has mentored and tutored children

in Camden since 2015. He is also a volunteer at the

Historical Society of Haddonfield and is a student

board committee member for the Haddonfield

Japan Exchange.

• Charlotte George is vice president of Play it

Forward, a music volunteering club where members

give free music lessons to students in Camden

schools. She is also on the school’s Peer Bias

Committee.

The Lions also recognized four other HMHS

students for their extensive volunteer work: Max

Cass, Kyle Dailey, Carly Griffin and Rebekah Vielehr.

The awards will be presented at a Lions Meeting

when the virus quarantine ends.

The Youth of the Year awards are named for

William G. Hansen, a longtime member and past

president of the Haddonfield Lions Club, and trustee

of the Lions Eye Bank of Delaware Valley. (After Bill

died on March 6, 2020, at age 102, his eyes were

donated to the Eye Bank.)

Bill Hansen was Haddonfield’s Citizen of the Year

in 1987.

The Last Word

#070 • APRIL 17 TO MAY 1, 2020

“Goodbye” ... and thanks

for the memories

By The Rev. Bill Getman

When I was younger – much younger – I hated airports. They represented

“goodbyes” to me and produced a pit in my stomach every time I entered one.

Yes, I know they also represent “hellos,” but that emotional realization came later. I

dreaded watching my dad board another plane for another conference, my brother fly

off to college, and worst of all, my future wife, Sue, leave to return to school in North

Carolina.

I’m experiencing a bit of airport dread right now, as I anticipate my flight into

retirement at the end of this month, because I will depart without ample opportunity

to say “Goodbye” to all who have been such an important part of my life the last

18 years. Unfortunately, my service as pastor of the First Presbyterian Church – an

immense privilege – is ending during a pandemic, when we must all practice “social

distancing.” So it will not be possible for “goodbyes” to be exchanged in person. Ugh!

At least I can use this “Last Word” column to recognize some people I will miss very

much. (And who doesn’t like getting the last word!)

I begin, of course, with the staff and members at First Presbyterian Church. They

have shared the joys and heartaches my family and I have known through nearly two

decades in Haddonfield. During those years, a day rarely passed that my family of faith

did not teach me about the love and compassion of God.

How grateful I will always be for them!

But I will leave with gratitude for others, as well: the town’s clergy, who were not

only colleagues in ministry, but close friends; the Council of Churches and Ed Hess,

who have provided financial support and guidance to hundreds of Camden County

households through the Case Worker Fund; Gene Kain and Pam Powers, the most

caring and professional funeral directors I have known in 43 years of ministry; the

management and staff at Villa Rosa and The Bistro, who knew when I walked in the

door what I would order; and all the Haddonfield residents too numerous to name who

became friends.

To all of you, thank you for so enriching my life.

The coronavirus has made it impossible for me to say

“Goodbye” in person, something I will always regret. But

my retirement will be filled with rich memories of my

time in Haddonfield. I will treasure them, and always be

thankful.
