MALLY SKOK
FOR MALLY SKOK DESIGN
The Future is Now
To tell the story of my ‘The Future is Now’ table, I chose my Emmie fabric as the tablecloth because I feel it is happy and optimistic and encourages one
to be happy in the now! The fabric is named after my dear 87-year-old mother who I am currently visiting in South Africa. Emmie is glam and fun and oh
so vibrant, and is dearly loved by all who cross her path. Even though our family has had its share of troubles, Emmie has taught us to enjoy every day
like it’s our last. Chez Emmie there is always a pretty cloth on the dinner table, a sprinkle of parsley on the side of the serving dish, and a bowl of fresh
flowers in the center. Emmie lives her life in the sunniest way, never stressing about her age, but going about her life like every day is a fresh new gift.
The dishes on the table were designed by me when I was on holiday in our house in Plettenberg Bay. The colours are the colours I see around me in
South Africa, fresh and happy, and someone recently told me the patterns remind them of the decoration on the outside of Ndebele houses—which
makes me very happy! The lovely Klismos chairs around my table are the product of a collaboration between me and the lovely young brother and sister
team that owns Dowel Furniture. I have always admired the shape of the ancient Greek form. Our version brings the chair into today! Turbulent times in
South Africa have made the people embrace the simple things that life offers—good food, delicious wine, dear friends, and the beauty of nature. I hope
my table demonstrates that! Tablecloth – Mally Skok Design; Emmie Multi Napkins – Mally Skok Design, Julia Blue; Robberg Plate Collection – Mally Skok
