0. Purpose of this text
I'm writing this because I often see people talking about protection or doing some, most of
the time quite well, but without clear view of some basics.
So I thought I'd share my views on this, hoping that it might help some of us enhance their
protection crafting.
Protection is one of the most important and potent part of our art. Whether we cast it on us
or on others. Let us use everything at our disposal to work it as powerfully as we can!
The present considerations are of general nature. They can be implemented whatever
your paths is and whatever you methods are. Whether you do rituals with candles and
circles or craft amulets and pendants or only do prayers and mantras. It works for them all.
And it is quite useful too for adding a little protection "pod" in a larger spell intended at
something else or in an object designed for another use.

1. Deflect
Deflecting vs. Blocking off
Do not aim at blocking bad things that come your way. It costs an awful lot of power.
Deflect them instead.
When you go for blocking, you face the negative influence head on. You need a lot of
strength to do that and your shield might break. In deflecting you use a very small amount
of energy and get the same effect. When deflecting you might get a blow, but you won't
break.
It's like the shell of an egg. It'll brake immediately with little effort if you go directly with the
point of a knife against it. But it will not do so easily if you apply the side of the knife flatly
on it.
2. Combine
Use combinations
Combining ingredients is the witch's way.
Use multiple spells and symbolisms.
When doing a spell that is intended to stand outside influences, combine different things.
The one thing might not resist but the others will and you get synergy effects.
Personally I use 2 sets of pictures for my combining techniques: the Onion and the Net.
And of course combining the onion and the net into a "neuronal onion"!
The Onion:
Make you protection in many layers. Or just use a lot of different, unrelated things, it
doesn't matter. The one layer will break, the others will not. And in the mean time the
broken layer can regenerate. You will be safe and cozy in the middle of your onion bulb.
The Net
Devise your protection so that it consists of many related things that are bound to each
other in whatever way.
You can use different structure. For my part I like these:
Neuronal net
a net of loosely related or self-relating things (the last being a kind of egregore if
you will)
Examples:
my cat, my dog, my family, my house
the apple wood and the rune carved on it hanging on a silver chain from Gandma
Weave
structure of systematically knitted things that support and strengthen each other
use your own symbolism

Examples:
You deity, her attributes, staff/weapon, her companion animal, her plant....
picture them in interaction
Land, forest, river, master tree, wild animals encountered there, rain and sun, smell,
picture of joy when wandering there....
Macramé
make a whole lot of knots!
The bad influence won't have a chance to find its way down to you!
3. Discharge
Discharging vs. containing
Devise your protection spell so that you always have conductors to discharge the energy
coming in to the outside. If you try to contain the energy, your protection will breaks. It is
similar to the point of deflecting instead of blocking.
You can use many pictures and symbolisms for that. I use three different methods for that:
the grounding/drain, the dispersing and the recycling.
The grounding and the drain
This method consist of leading the energy into the earth since the earth can basically take
up all magic of the earth.
Examples of pictures usable for this purpose are those of a lightning conductor going into
the ground or that of a drain pipe (or both).
The dispersing
The dispersing is similar to the draining but more intentional and thorough. You scatter the
negative energy into the universe.
I personally like the picture of a fast opening flower blossom hurling the dew into the
surrounding. Or that of extending the outer layer of my aura into the infinite.
The recycling
The recycling is my favorite method. Not only do you discharge the negative energy like in
the grounding method and scatter it like in the dispersing method but you also thoroughly
neuter it in making it available for other purposes.
A basic picture for that would be that of a recycle container (for glass bottles for example).
A somewhat more complex picture is that of the blossom/extending aura with the energy
being given into the universe for reuse.
Give it a further boon in remembering that we are the ones with the broom! We are the
ones intended for cleaning the world!

4. Use benedictions
Use benedictions: you are never alone!
We are integrated in a net of social ties and love. Use this net to protect you, include those
relations into your protection spells. They are naturally protective of you.
Examples:
work these things into you spell:
the love and affection from your dog
the closeness and intimacy of your cat
the love and ties of your family
the unconditional love of a parent, aunt or uncle
the commitment of a teacher that gave you that thing that made a difference
the peaceful, welcoming strength of a beloved tree
the amazing beauty of your garden with all its plants and little gnomes
your guardian angel
the blessing from the priest(ress) during your rite of passing
the meeting you had with a friendly coyote
...........
Note: DO NOT bind your dog (or anybody) into your protection spell, bind his/her love and
friendship. If you bind a person, that person will get a backlash. If you bind the love of a
person, it will get an alarm according to his/her empathy level but won't get hurt. In the
example of your dog, he/she might get a bit distressed when you are the target of negative
energy but that'll only lead to him/her reasserting his/her love and in doing so strengthen
your protection even more.
5 Draw on egregores
Draw on egregores: you are closely knitted in a community of intent!
This is basically similar to the using of benedictions in point 4, but on a collective level.
Include the egregores you are part of into your protection. There is strength in numbers
and their intent is very strong. Their dispersion potential is huge. They constitute a net of
their own as described under point 2.
Examples:
An egregore for protection means can be any thing:
family
coven
facebook group
"the girls"
your favorite forest
the mountains of you homeland

6. Resort to your symbolism
Transfer the meaning and coherence of your symbolism into your protection
You already have a whole set of symbols organized to a system in the back of your mind.
Your symbolism is the backbone of your faith, the map of your path. Use it to give
meaning, strength and complexity to your protection.
Examples:
Protective deity + elements + time of year + color of candle + herb used in the ritual + ....
It is basically what is done in every ritual but often forgotten when working a protection.
Use all you have, meditate, find out, add, tie together, do your best, we are witches not
because we use our cauldrons to brew ugly smelling potions but because we combine
ingredients, symbols, ideas... and tie it all together to fulfill your intent.
Your symbolism support the combining into a complex spell (see point 2), ties existing
benedictions into your protection (point 4), give you the strength of your egregores (point
5) etc ....
PS: I know, I haven't mentioned the circle around the pentagram nor have spoken much
about candles. Quite effective though.
7. Use high-level validation
Protection is a right, claim it!
Protection is a right for every living being.
Validate your protection with the express approval of God, your deity or whatever your
path is. And if necessary, write your own declaration of right and sport it to the face of the
Universe!
8. Use your memories
Your memories are an essential part of what you are, weave them in!
Use what you have experienced, recall the good things, weave memories of benedictions,
egregores, symbolism, high-level validation or just love, happiness and peace into your
protection. Time is irrelevant to your soul and to your personality. What you had and what
you were is part of what you have and what you are.
9. Get advice
You are not the first on in this situation, get advice!
There are a lot of people out there who have done protection already. Ask them to give you
advice and tell you their ways. You'll probably find something appealing to you among their
suggestions. And in giving you advice their give you some small benediction (point 4) and
build a small egregore (point 5).

10 Do not send back
Do not send back, deflect, disperse, recycle
I know, this point is controversial. But please consider it well. In sending back you bind
yourself to the negative energy, you use it to your own purpose, you acknowledge it. It
makes it stronger and entangles you in karmic tetherings.
Stepping into holiness is one of the strongest protections ever. And Oneness is the
absolute protection.
This being said, I've done some rebounce protections too ;-)
This energy costs are high though.
11 When it's too late already
You are under a curse or subject to negative energy, free yourself from it!
This is a very difficult topic and there are no patent solutions.
Use all the tips you can get. Assert your right to protection and freewill.
I would recommend working along this line. But please adapt it to your ways and liking. It
should work for you after all. This is only a general recommendation.

5. Get a circle to help you
a circle can be a single cat ;-) or a coven
please use only people who know what they are doing and do it freely

6. Push the curse/negative energy back
go to your inner core
picture your deep self as a light
expand the light outwards using your power, your community with the whole life or
whatever you prefer until the curse or negative energy is outside you

Note on targeting:
When I was young, my father told me, you can target a person by using blood, a nail
clipping, some hair or some saliva. And soon I learned that targeting can be done via a
photography. I thought a long time that technical devices are not compatible to magic and
that therefore targeting would not work through data processing machines. Wrong I was.
One can be targeted over the internet. For example over one's Facebook profile!
And so I was once the object of a energy vampirism attack over my FB profile. I was so
surprised that I instinctively block it (ouch!). Fortunately I started to deflect and to disperse
soon enough. I sent a message saying that next time I would ground him (it was a he),
keep the channel open and pull all I could into the ground. He didn't get the hint. By the
second time I did pull all I could into the ground, but gently. He cut the connection in time
but never tried again and deleted his profile.
So be careful, make your protection an overhaul thing so that it works on all sides.
