Welcome to the 8th edition of the Classic Yacht Association Vessel Register.

The backbone of this register are the many launches, yachts, and open day boats that grace its pages.

This year, we have completely refreshed the information and photos on each vessel, so that the register

is as up-to-date as possible. Like previous editions, it is sure to become the reference document for our

classic boat community. On top of this, there are the many stories, and photos that capture some of the

memorable moments from the last 12 months - particularly from events like the Mahurangi Regatta, Patio

Bay, and the Rudder Cup, all of which are what make classic boating very special.

Our classic fleet is the living record of New Zealand’s maritime legacy. We should be immensely proud

that such a large number of wooden vessels exist in the condition they do, thanks to the generations of boat

builders and custodians who came before us. I use that word - custodian - frequently when referring to

Little Jim. We don’t really ‘own’ her, rather we are merely taking good care of her until she passes into the

hands of her next custodian. The term serves as a useful reminder of the enormous value that our classic

fleet holds to the wider community and the nation itself. That value is often taken for granted, and so

while we get great enjoyment from mucking about on boats, we must keep one eye on gifting that legacy to

the next generation.

We want to keep growing this register and indeed, we think it should be the authoritative record

of current classic and modern classic vessels in New Zealand waters. The register is a great means of

introduction when on the water, to extend the camaraderie of classic boats. If you see a boat out that should

be listed here, I encourage you to row over and say hello. Gift them your copy and encourage them to

become part of the classic community - let us know and we’ll find another copy for you.

It takes a team effort to put this register together, and I would like to particularly thank Nathan

Herbert, Rachel Orr, Steve Horsley, and Joyce Talbot, for pulling everything together. Enjoy their work,

and the fantastic vessels in the register.

See you on the water!

The PIC Coastal Classic Yacht Race

from Auckland’s Devonport Wharf to

Russell Wharf in the Bay of Islands, is

New Zealand’s premier fleet yacht race and has

been held annually at Labour weekend since

its inception in 1982. Organised by the NZ

Multihull Yacht Club, the race is 119 nautical

miles long and it usually takes from 6 hours for

the fast sprint boats to up to 24 hours for normal

yachts.

The 2019 race was reported to be intense,

exhilarating, scary and really fun. More than 150

sailboats raced in testing conditions, with strong

cold winds, blowing up to 30-35 knots in exposed

parts of the race making for a fast trip north. A

new overall race record was set by giant mod 70

trimaran BEAU GESTE of just over 5 hours.

We are proud to report that there were six

classic yachts taking part in the classic yacht

division, including INNISMARA, PAHI,

LEDA, LITTLE JIM, ILEX and SPRAY II.

INNISMARA, arriving in just under 12.5 hours,

placed 2nd from 36 yachts in Division 2, and took

out both line honours and the handicap win in the

classic division.

We had crew reports and images from our

oldest classic yacht LITTLE JIM (1934), who

came in 9th from 33 yachts in Division 5, and

4th in the classics. After making excellent time

up the coast averaging 8.5kts from Devonport to

Whangaruru, the winds dropped as predicted,

making for a very calm and pleasant upwind beat

for the last 20 miles from Cape Brett to Russell,

and all on board were pleased to arrive by 4am in

just 18.5 hours.

Every boat that made it to the finish line

this year did so in less than 20 hours, making

this one of the fastest races up the coast,

ever. Congratulations to all who took part in this

challenging race. It’s awesome to see our members

taking part in this epic race and putting the

‘classics’ back into the coastal classic!

ROCKY BAY

Rocky Bay, Waiheke Island, is our first passage

yacht race and cruise of the summer season. This

relatively new event, inspired by Bruce Dunlop, is

steadily building in popularity.

In November 2019 we were blessed with sunny

skies and 15-20 knot westerly winds that made

for great sailing with an exhilarating finish in the

entrance to the bay. The conditions were perfect

and made for a good overnight anchorage.

Members, friends and family were treated

to the onshore BBQ and BYO at the charming

Omiha Rocky Bay Hall. Lisa and Wade Lewis

and the crew of AROHIA were on hand with

Kauri Kitchen pies and L’Authentique sausages.

Prizegiving was followed by the rousing music

from local Waiheke band Grainneog.

Bails51PATIO BAY

Held at the end of November, this much

anticipated annual Mark Foy yacht race and CYA

Christmas party is held at Bert and Margaret

Woolcott’s Patio Bay, Waiheke property.

In 2019, we were thankful for magnificent

weather and had the pleasure of seeing the bay

full of our classic boats. Everyone came ashore

for the prizegiving and BBQ in fine spirits.

Along with the annual cracking of the rum

barrel, refilled by winners of the previous year’s

Patio Bay A class yacht race, Margaret awarded

a traditional boat book and we had prizegiving

Fleur Coleman

for the yacht racing. We also held the hotly

contended annual cake competition, moved from

the Round Rangitoto yacht race, to involve more

of our community.

There were prizes for the best dressed crew

and Waitemata Woodys had prizes for the

glorious classic launches. Congratulations to

all the winners and thanks to all the people

that went that extra mile to make this such a

successful event. Our members, friends and

family had a lot of fun celebrating and we all

look forward to returning to Patio Bay!

MAHURANGI

Organised by Mahurangi Action Group and

Mahurangi Cruising Club, the Mahurangi Regatta

is a highlight of the CYA calendar, with many

clubs holding races to or from the event each year.

Held the weekend before Auckland Anniversary

day each year, it’s always a great success.

The 2019 event was no exception with sunny skies

and a huge turnout of classic launches and yachts

filling the harbour at Sullivan’s Bay with beach events

for all the family, with the classic launch parade and

then the yacht regatta. The day finished with the

famous shore party at Scott’s Landing.

If you haven’t yet made the trip, be sure to join

us next time!

The Ports of Auckland Annual Anniversary

Day Regatta is our chance to showcase our

impressive classic fleet for the City of Auckland

and her many visitors. This day again features a

Classic Launch Race in the inner harbour.

Well done to those boats that come back to town

from Mahurangi in time for the racing on Monday!

We are hoping for excellent racing conditions

to again enjoy the fierce racing and to safely

manoeuvre through the masses of vessels out

enjoying the harbour and all the festivities of this

public holiday.

KENNEDY BAY

The Allpress Kennedy Bay Classic Yacht Race

and Cruise, inspired by yacht captain Andy

Ball, is fast becoming a must-do event. It provides

us with the perfect occasion for our launch and

yacht fleets to come together to take part in

the fun, friendship and fraternity that is classic

wooden boating.

We are excited to announce Allpress coffee as

our naming sponsor for the event, and along with

additional support from Fosters Ship Chandlery,

many spot prizes will be available. The Tiki bar

BBQ will be running hot and Kauri Kitchen

pies and L’Authentique gourmet sausages will be

available to supplement your BYO.

We are also pleased to announce that this event

will feature live music from the Caitlin Smith

Quartet, Roberta Plant and her Pageboys, and

Paul Symons. See the CYA website for details and

see you there!

RIVERHEAD

couple of times a year, members from the CYA

A and Waitemata Woodys come together to head

up the Rangitopuni creek to The Riverhead Tavern.

Arriving by classic launch, yacht, open day

boat, speedboat or car, it’s a great way to see an

area of Auckland that many haven’t experienced,

and to invite friends and family to enjoy a leisurely

cruise and a great meal.

CYA REGATTA

PHOTOS: Roger Mills

The 3-day annual ABD Group Classic Yacht

Regatta is the premier sailing event on the CYA

events calendar. The original Classic Yacht Regatta,

called the Logan Cup, was held in 2000. It became

an annual event in 2005 with racing taking place in

the magnificent Hauraki Gulf.

This regatta continues to grow with up to 35

yachts competing within six divisions over four

races.

We look forward to hosting you yachties and

our friends from the Classic Yacht Association

of Australia at the Royal NZ Yacht Squadron in

March this year. It promises to be a spectacular

long weekend of sailing!

RUDDER CUP

WORDS: Jason Prew

On December 14th 2018 almost 110 years not far behind. The rest of the fleet was closely

to the day, 15 launches roared down packed as they rounded north head. By the time

the harbour starting the Rudder Cup the Rangi Light was abeam most of the entries

commemorative race for only the 3rd time in 100 had calmed down and set a more realistic state of

years. The entries ranged from American designed throttle. Aboard My Girl we settled at 10.5 knots

speedsters to Kiwi Workboats. The handicaps were in the setting sun. The wind was on the nose but

The story of Eileen Patricia as told

by owners Peter and Jenni Mence

starts with a post on the Waitemata

Woodys website about a launch

for sale, designed and built by A.F. Couldrey.

This attracted interest as Pete and Jenni already

had one of Couldrey’s yachts and thought

that it would be of benefit for related on water

activities.

They ended up owning the Linden on

TEAL

PHOTOS AND WORDS:Tony Stevenson

T

eal was designed and built by the

Lidgard brothers in 1946 for Sir

Willian Goodfellow and L.H. Clarke.

Launched at Kawau Island on 22nd December

1948, subsequent owners included Sir Keith

Park, Mark Williams, T.L. Elliott, Fred

Herbert and Malcolm Task.

In 2012 a phone call from Okahu Bay

Hardstand prevented Teal from heading to

the scrapyard because of outstanding fees.

Within 24 hours Teal was rescued by the Tino

Rawa Trust and transferred to a boat shed in

Morningside. The desire to add to the Trusts

existing fleet of vessels was not part of the long

term plan but the threat of losing a vessel with

provenance, both in design and with previous

owners, was.

We were uncertain what the future was

for the yacht but at least she was now safe

undertaken removing surplus hardware and

the cockpit and cabin structure that were well

beyond repair. Along with the removal of many

layers of paint both inside and out and some

interesting ‘design additions’ below the waterline

this now gave us a clean canvas to mull

over the future design and use of Teal.

Returning her to the original configuration

was considered at length. We often referred to

the design of Jack Brookes Gleam built in the

same era, similar in design both in bow, narrow

beam, stern and a weapon with cracked sheets.

The final decision, based on functionality,

was to design a day sailer with the large cockpit

and a modest cuddy cabin. Fund raising

started and by 2016 Teal arrived at Yachting

Developments at Hobsonville. Ian Cook

arranged for her to arrive in the small hours

before Blanche Cook found out. Her mantra

from the ‘wreckers ball’. Initial work was of ‘no cash, no splash’ applied to all vessels

44 45

including the many classic yachts and launches

rescued and restored by Ian and Blanche’s

company. Tucked in between several super

yacht projects, visitors often asked if Teal was an

addition to a millionaires super yacht along with

their tenders and day boats.

The design included a large open cockpit, a

Herroschoff inspired cuddy cabin and minimal

additions below. A modest head and two squabs

that present a challenge for anyone taller than

5ft 3in are the luxuries. Her overall length

is 38ft 6in (11.73m), beam 8ft (2.43m) and

draught 5ft (1.52m). The double-skinned kauri

carvel construction has been glassed with two

layers of triax three directional cloth. Classic

purists may debate this process but at 70 years

old some tired boats need stiffening up much

the same way as old people need new joints.

A preloved 20hp Volvo, ex Steinlager 2 and

donated by the NZ Sailing Trust was installed.

The existing Farr 1104 rig was retained, a new

rudder installed and a new Doyles main, two jibs, a

gennaker and a Code 0 completed the wardrobe.

Teal was lovingly restored over the course

of more than a year and has now returned her

to former glory competing in the CYA racing

series, SSANZ 2 handed races, Bay of Islands

Tall Ships Regatta and other races.

Her tippy’ness was not unexpected right from

the first sail but with the inclusion of hiking

straps and continuous trimming on main and

headsails Teal is a physical but fun boat to sail.

Trustee William Goodfellow commented, ‘Her

new design acknowledges the past, but she has

been reborn for the future’.

Pohutukawa timbers have been scientifically

analysed under electron microscope by Susanne

Grieve Rawson at Victoria University and while

the cellular structure of the kauri is considered

to be in remarkably ‘average to good’ condition

the pohutukawa timbers are considered poor

which leaves the vessel at risk of irreversible

damage if it is dried too quickly and without

further analysis and treatment. Currently the

Daring is kept damp by regular spraying of

fresh water which not only stops the timbers

collapsing, warping and cracking but helps

remove the iron, sulphur, silicon, calcium and

chlorine elements in the timber. The Daring
