Classic Yacht Association of New Zealand Inc.
Welcome to the updated Classic Yacht Association Register of vessels. The Register
has a lengthy shelf life and is a key reference at home and on board many vessels. It does
represent a lot of work though and thanks are due to everyone who helped get this edition
ready for print, especially Nathan Herbert and Steve Horsley (both of whom managed
to re-launch their respective boats during the exercise) and to the team, Michelle Khan,
Joyce Talbot and Tony Stevenson for all the work in completing this year’s edition.
The committee encourage you to use the register as a means of introduction when on
the water, to extend the camaraderie. If you see us out there with the burgee up, it would
be rude if you didn’t row over!
While few are prepared for the responsibility or the hard work and expense of classic
boat ownership, there are many who wish to see them on the harbour and a greater
number still who would wish them to be restored and maintained for future generations
(such a pity that the “future generations” are not so helpful with the varnish brush!).
They are not just old boats, they are our maritime legacy. This publication outlines part
of the heritage for all New Zealanders.
While we will all have our own views and preferences the CYA exists to celebrate
what we have in common, yet at the same time, we need to be thankful that we each
have differing views. After all beauty is in the eye of the beholder. So be prepared to be
dazzeled by the breadth of beauty within these pages–enjoy.
A Short history of the
Classic Yacht Association of
New Zealand Inc.
Who would have thought back in
the early 1990’s that the Classic
Yacht Association of New Zealand
would be the organisation it is today? Back then,
the ‘old clunkers’ were changing hands for very
little money. The friends of the wannabe owners
looked at them as if they had lost their marbles
and were busily counselling them to enjoy
recreational sailing on some other vessel, any
vessel other than a tired old yacht.
Fortunately, the passion for these old boats was
overwhelming. The restoration of Ariki in the late
1970s and of Tawera in the late 1980’s had been very
singular events. The new blood of Hamish Ross,
who had bought Little Jim in 1994, Greg Scopas,
the new owner of Ngataringa and John Gorter,
the owner of the little C-Class Thelma since 1987,
was mixed with that of Chad Thompson, who had
enjoyed a lifetime of sailing on Prize.
The group was spurred on by Ron Copland,
the then Commodore of the Ponsonby Cruising
Club and owner of Nomad, a beautifully restored
6
26’ mullet boat.
The classics had dropped off the racing scene
after the change in rules governing the size of
spinnakers in the mid-1970s, and the older owners
of the pre WWII keelers were getting to the stage
in life where racing was just a bit too hard. There
were also these modern light displacement keelers
making the racing a little one-sided.
When John Gorter bought Thelma in 1987, he
wanted to convert her back to a gaff rig. Hamish
Ross wanting some serious racing with Little Jim,
Ngataringa and Prize represented some reasonable
competition, as did the other old keelers. If only
a programme of racing could be put together that
the classics could participate in without being
knocked around by the modern yachts. Old heavy
displacement yachts with long keels and, in some
cases, no winches, do not race around the harbour
in the same way as the newer fin-keeler confections.
The first meeting of these like-minded skippers
was in the workshop of the NZ National Maritime
Museum where they along with a number of Greg

Scopas’ friends, had gathered to review the work in
progress on the restoration of Ngataringa in January
1995. The remainder of that season saw more of
the classics get together in ever increasing numbers.
Word was spreading amongst the owners of old
yachts and, after a late season meeting in the saloon
of Prize, a meeting was called for 8th May 1995 at
the Ponsonby Cruising Club.
required, the association moved to the Royal New
Zealand Yacht Squadron as the club had been
the traditional home of classic keelers up until
the late 1970s. In 2005 the 3-day Classic Yacht
Regatta based in the Viaduct Harbour became an
annual event attracting crews from far and wide
and remains a highlight on the association event
calendar today.
Twenty-three owners of old yachts gathered
that night and within a very short time there were
50 expressions of interest in participating in an
association.
By October 1995, an event programme had
been established for the 1995/1996 season and
the number of members was growing weekly.
Initially, most of the active yachts were the
racing keelers, although an increasing number
of cruising yachts were showing interest in
participating. It was also great to see the number
of early owners and their crews taking up
subscriptions in the association in order to keep
abreast of news of their old rivals and the progress
of the ever-increasing number of restorations
Many of these boats still race today and grace
the pages of this publication and thankfully
there have been many owners and crews with the
passion, time and money to restore their boats to
their former glory.
The fifth anniversary of the Association was
focused around the first defence of the America’s
Cup in February 2000. The Logan Cup (12th
– 14th February 2000) was a huge success with
more than 70 competitors. After the loss of a
major sponsor and much needed financial support
It has been well recognised that it was
necessary to expand the events programme to
entice the launch owners who were following
the racing yachts to many of the Hauraki Gulf
destinations. Today there is a strong programme
of activities for launches as well as the sailing
yachts, often with owners and crews of both
taking part in the others events, such is the
camaraderie of the members.
The association has gone from strength to
strength thanks to the founders, many committee
members and members willing to give their
time to the association. To ensure all classic
boat owners have the opportunity to enjoy the
company of each other and the Corinthian
yachting, staying true to the old values of the
association. The interest in classic yachting in
New Zealand is ever-increasing and what the
association has to offer its members is broadening
all the time.
Classic boating
with a young family.
I see the appeal of a five metre tinny sitting
in the driveway. A squirt with the hose and
an annual engine service is about all the
maintenance they need. The mooring fees,
well, there are none. You can fish, dive and tow
screaming kids in mindless circles until one of
them turns inside out. With demands on the
modern worker’s time being so great, it’s a good
explanation for the surge in small boat ownership
and the erosion of the classic large boat market.
Never has there been a better time to buy a New
Zealand built timber yacht or launch.
Working a corporate job locked in an office
saw me craving something more hands on
where the pride in ownership and the active
maintenance is as much a source of enjoyment
as the actual use of the vessel. My boat Jonquil,
came about in the blissfully unaware newlywed
years with two incomes and no kids. The head
28
count has now doubled and the income streams
halved, it would be far too easy to simply whack
the boat on the market and fade into the oblivion
of nappy valley.
Jonquil is a 32’ Herreshoff yacht designed
in 1914 for use in the waters of Buzzards Bay,
Massachusetts. Her amenities are few. During an
Easter cruise I made a small list of conveniences
that would deem life on board with children
more manageable. First was running water,
second was a toilet and third was sun protection
to make use of Jonquils good sized cockpit. This
and a leaking centreboard case triggered a major
winter refit. Most of the work was completed
by myself, with generous assistance from family
and friends. I questioned my sanity when at the
peak of exhaustion I discovered myself hand
sanding by headlamp at 11:00pm with my day job
looming only a few short hours away.

The trick to keeping your passion alive is to make
it an all-inclusive affair. For me this means less of
the classic race circuit and more picnics to McKenzie
Bay or overnight pirate adventures to Waiheke.
Destinations needn’t be far flung, to a 3 year old boy
there is little difference between Issy Bay and the Bay
Of Islands.
As for the maintenance; once the dust settles, the
brushes harden and your pride and joy floats happily at her
berth you realise it was all worthwhile. I encourage young
families to turn their backs on the Auckland housing
market and snap up a true bargain that will provide many
days of family enjoyment while teaching kids skills and
values that will shape them into great adults.
RIVERHEAD
A couple of times a year the CYA heads ‘inland’
up to The Riverhead, NZ’s oldest riverside tavern.
Members arrive by Launch, yacht, open day boat,
speedboat and car to experience a great lunch,
brunch or casual afternoon meal. Located at the
top of the Rangitopuni creek, there is plenty of
depth for our vessels to travel up in single-file and
anchor around the pontoon at the bottom of The
Riverhead’s steps. A highly valued and constant
presence at these events has been the Tino Rawa
Charitable Trust with their big inflatable the
Whistleblower acting as a free taxi from boat to
wharf. It’s all part of the camaraderie of the CYA.
PATIO BAY
Held in early December the annual Patio Bay
Mark Foy race to Waiheke is our first big event of
the season, and for many members the highlight.
Each year our kind hosts Bert and Margaret
Woolcott open up their property to the CYA
for a great BYO BBQ and race prize giving with
dinghies lining the shoreline until late.
While the yachts enjoy a great sail down from
Auckland, the amount of classic launches gathered
in one place is an impressive sight!
MAHURANGI
Organised by the Mahurangi Cruising Club,
the Mahurangi Regatta is a highlight of the CYA
calendar, with many clubs holding races to or from
the event each year and is always a great success.
There are many magic things about classic boats;
one of them is their ability to attract great weather.
The 2016 event was no exception with sunny
skies and a huge turnout of classic launches and
yachts filling the harbour, first at Sullivan’s Bay for
daytime activities then for the famous shore party
at Scott’s Landing.
If you haven’t yet made the trip, be sure to next time!
CYA REGATTA
The 3-day annual Classic Yacht Association
regatta is the premier sailing event on the CYA
events calendar. The original Classic yacht regatta
was held in 2000 called the Logan Cup. It became
an annual event in 2005 and until 2015, it was
based in the Viaduct Harbour area with racing
taking place in the magnificent Hauraki Gulf.
In 2016 the regatta moved it’s race headquarters to
the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron. The fleet
continues to grow with up to 75 yachts competing
within seven divisions over four races.
HERITAGE EXHIBITION
By Ivor Wilkins
Excitement is building in the mullet boat
fleet at the approach of the Lipton Cup
centenary, a milestone that will fairly
neatly dovetail with a heritage stretching back a
century-and-a-half.
Tamariki, the most successful Lipton Cupper of
all-time with 13 victories between 1935 and 1968,
is undergoing a complete restoration with a view
to being on the startline for the 100th birthday.
Tamariki
Designed by Chas Collings, Tamariki is now owned
by boatbuilders Martin Robertson and Rob Warring.
Graham Andrew, Rear Commodore of
Ponsonby Cruising Club, says planning is about
to be stepped up for celebrating the big occasion
in 2022. He hopes that, with a number of
refurbishments under way, 15 or 16 mulleties
will compete for the trophy. Perhaps a surprise
resurrection or two from some forgotten garage
project could even take the number close to 20.
“That would be fantastic.”
The Lipton Cup looms large in the mullet
boat’s transition from a working fishing vessel to a
powerful harbour racer. The seeds of competition
were always present, as evidenced in the
extraordinary spread of sail as the fishermen sped
back to sell their catch at the markets.
38
The precarious nature of the ‘mulleties’, which
could be driven under by the power of their rigs,
combined with a reputation for wild partying by
the men who sailed them gave rise to their ‘antiestablishment’
stereotyping. The ‘bogan V8s of the
harbour’ is how Tony Stevenson referred to them
at a recent exhibition celebrating the mullet boat
heritage. Long-time mullet exponent Gary Murie
proudly asserted the mullet’s ‘maverick’ status.
The exhibition was staged by the
Tino Rawa Trust in association with
Panuku Development Auckland,
Ponsonby Cruising Club and the
Classic Yacht Association as part of
a series of Classic Yacht and Launch
Exhibitions held during Auckland
Heritage Festival. Previous exhibitions
celebrated designers like Des Townson,
Jim Young, Jack Brooke, Bob Stewart
and Col Wild.
As mullet stocks declined towards
the end of the 19th century and into
the early 20th century, the grunty little
centreboard fishing smacks became
popular harbour racers, attracting a
huge following and vigorous betting. It took five
or six crew, often fueled by prodigious quantities
of beer, to manhandle the boats around the race
track. Heroic after-match functions were equally
demanding.
In 1922, Scottish tea-baron Sir Thomas Lipton of
America’s Cup fame, donated a trophy to Ponsonby
Cruising Club as ‘a challenge cup for annual
competition’. The club had shrewdly appointed
Sir Thomas as its Vice President in 1904 and, on
receiving the magnificent trophy, decided it would
be allocated to the popular 22ft mullet boat class.
Ever since, the mullet legend has continued to
grow and the Tino Rawa Trust exhibition provided
a great opportunity for stalwarts young and old to
gather and swap yarns.
Long-time mullet boat exponent Ron Copeland,

for example, recalled racing on Controversy when
they got hit by a 40-knot squall. “I was sitting on
the boom and there were three cops on the tiller. We
went into a Chinese gybe and lay flat on the water,
with the 800sq ft spinnaker holding us down.
“One of the crew couldn’t swim and nearly
drowned. The boat began to sink and we managed
to get a launch to tow us towards the Tamaki Yacht
Club.” Ron swam a line ashore and then burst into
the club rooms, where a wedding was in process.
The nuptials were abandoned as Ron herded the
guests outside to help haul the boat ashore.
“Just as we were finishing up, an E-Type Jag
pulled up and the driver handed out a bottle of
rum to warm us up. He said he knew what mullet
boat sailing was all about because he used to sail
one of the ‘sons of bitches’.”
Despite affectionate typecasting in somewhat
renegade terms, the venerable mullet boat has a
distinguished place in New Zealand’s maritime
history. It has inspired many leading designers and
served as a breeding ground for some of its best
sailors. The 100th anniversary of the Lipton Cup
will indeed be an occasion for celebration.
THE RESTORATION OF
CORONA
By Harold Kidd
CORONA is considered one of the best
26ft (7.93m) mullet boat ever built.
Designed by Charles Collings and built
by his firm Collings & Bell, she was launched in
October 1936 for the Nunn brothers.
Corona was a powerful sail carrier. On her 10ft
6in (3.2m) beam she carried 900ft² (274.3m2) in
her gaff cutter rig. Her mast was a towering 40ft
(12.2m), and she had
a 30ft (9.1m) boom, a
19ft (5.8m) gaff and a
15ft (4.6m) bowsprit.
From bowsprit to end
of boom she measured
45ft 6in (13.9m).
Two and a half
tonnes of lead ballast
kept her reasonably
stiff, standing in for
the load of fish her
ancestors would have
brought home to
market.
She was in a class
of her own from the
start and remained
scratch boat in the
fleet during the
18 years the Nunn
brothers owned her.
Fast-forward 30 years,
and Corona, now a tired old fishing launch was sold
to a group of three Ponsonby Cruising Club mullet
boat enthusiasts – Ron Copeland, Lee Chambers
and John Hogan – who persuaded the National
Maritime Museum at Hobson Wharf in Auckland
to restore her.
In 2009, with the blessing and active support of
Ron Copeland and Lee Chambers, the
New Zealand Traditional Boatbuilding School at
Hobsonville negotiated with the museum to take
over Corona and complete her restoration. School
trustees Robert Brooke and Ian McRobie put in a
great deal of research to ensure that Corona took
to the water again as a faithful recreation of her
original self. Collings original hull drawings were
checked to ensure the outlines of her cabin top
and other details were
in complete accord
with contemporary
photographs.
Ian McRobie
gathered a team of core
volunteers around him
notably Morrie Ogden
and Ian Stephenson.
The School obtained
generous funding and
contributions of work
and materials from the
trade, but the team of
volunteers were the key.
Corona was relaunched
on the top of
the tide in early March
from the old RNZAF
flying-boat slip at
Hobsonville. In brilliant
sunshine with a light
breeze, and as a large
crowd watched, Corona sailed like a witch in the
light breeze and got up to seven knots.
Nowadays Corona can be seen at Auckland’s
Viaduct alongside Jessie Logan, Wairiki and a clutch
of other fine classics sponsored by the Tino Rawa
Trust. Her skipper Richard Allen continues to ensure
that she is maintained in excellent condition and
enthusiastically raced on the harbour.

LUCINDA
Roger Hamilton
While painting a friend’s yacht at Devonport,
I was being watched by a small, run-down
bridgedecker on a distant mooring. Months went by
wondering what her story was until Alan Houghton
tracked down the owner’s name for me. A few
Facebook messages to Melbourne, a trip aboard with
a large bilge pump and Lucinda was mine.
What a mess. What a complete mess. With
sledgehammer and pry bar in hand I removed her
interior, including engine beds, bulkheads and some
sawn frames. A whole winter of heat-gun paint
stripping inside on cold weeknights followed, then
the construction phase began with the help of my
father, a skilled builder. I have never heard him curse
as much as in Lucinda every time he discovered
something about the boat that had been built to look
square/level/even in fact was not! I scrounged timber
from old furniture, rebuilt mechanical parts myself
and made a little go a long way.
After 127 weeks of hard work outside of hours,
Lucinda was launched on 27 August 2016. What
an experience it has been; meeting people, learning
42
skills and breaking things became my weekend
routine for that whole time!
She was built in 1930 at Onehunga by L. C.
Coulthard as a 27ft hard chine tram-topper for Jack
Griffin with a big cockpit great for day use. These
days Lucinda sports an open plan bridge deck cabin
with large glass area great for ‘Gulf cruising which
suits me perfectly.
I hope stories like these will inspire others to
look past the swooping sheers and glistening varnish
of the more glamourous boats, and take it upon
themselves to see the affordable and enjoyable
opportunity which small sometimes unusual vessels
like Lucinda can offer.
INNISMARA
In October 2014 the classic yachting fleet saw the
return of the magnificent Bernie Schmidt built, 67ft
racer Innismara, aka ‘war canoe’. Also known as ‘the
pencil’ she has been restored by Blanche & Ian Cook
along with the team at Yachting Developments.
Prior to coming into the hands of the Cooks,
Innismara was in very poor shape, suffering from
long term shed storage and fire damage to her
forward sections. Her keel was also missing, but
her history was still there and she was destined to
return as a race winner on the Waitemata.
Once again the Cooks have returned one of our
classic fleet to better than new condition. Blanche
and Ian also own the 1938 yacht Ranger, a fine
stablemate for Innismara and Erewhon: the next in
line for restoration.
The Manson Supreme Anchor is made by Lloyds certified
experts in Auckland’s wild west – not cowboys in China.
So strap on your six shooter, head down to your local
chandlery and rustle yourself up a Supreme – it’s known
as the Equaliser – and can rein in the toughest seabed.
Avoid the stampede, lasso one today!
