(CCA) EGRETS AND NIGHT HERONS
Egrets and Night Herons have created nesting sites in Copperfield for
the last 5 years shutting down pools, mailboxes & creating havoc in
our neighborhood. The Egrets and Night Herons WILL be returning
now!! Prevention is Crucial - Egrets, herons and other migratory birds
are protected by Federal International Treaty, it’s illegal for residents to
harass or harm the birds once they lay eggs. Residents will need to band
together and drive them out of our neighborhood for the next several
years. Preventing the birds from building nests on residential property or
in our parks is key.
1. Trim your tree and remove dead wood, these birds favor oak trees and
other hardwoods. But will nest in other mature trees as well. Trim your
tree canopy to allow sunlight between limbs and other nearby trees.
Experts say this is the MOST effective step.
2. Remove any old inactive nest in your trees. Egret Prevention Tools! This
is the only opportunity homeowners have to scare the birds away and to
disrupt the cycle. Any home with mature trees is a potential nesting site.
• Visual deterrents - Hang aluminum pie plates, Mylar balloons, beach
balls with shiny streamers or other moving objects in large trees.
• Noisemakers - Pump-style air horns, whistles, clappers and even
children’s toys are effective. Make as much noise as possible aimed at the
bird.
• Bright lights - High-intensity flashlights, strobe lights, flashing holiday
lights can be effective.
• Water sprayers - Power sprayers and pump-style toy water shooters can
help. Homemade PVC pipe sprayers can help reach tall tree limbs.
• Pool poles - Telescoping pool safety poles can be used to reach and
remove early nesting material.
• Any Non-lethal devices.
• Check trees daily and remove the start of any nest quickly. Once birds
begin sitting on the nest, eggs are probably present and birds cannot
be harassed. If you have not yet taken action to prevent nesting on your
property, please do so now!
FIRE TRUCK CLEARANCE
The Cy-Fair Volunteer Fire Department is still requesting homeowners
assist in addressing the low hanging trees within the Copperfield
Community. Low hanging limbs and branches are causing damage to
the fire departments equipment and damage to the homeowners’ trees,
hampering the response to emergency calls. Most of the fire departments
equipment is 13 feet tall and therefore need a 14 foot clearance from
trees that hang over the streets. Routes to locations have to be altered
to avoid these areas and some areas have no alternate route; leaving no
recourse but to park and walk to the locations.
SEE STRAYS IN YOUR STREET?
Do adult cats traipse through your landscape? Have you discovered
newborn kittens in your yard? If you choose to care for these cats, keep in
mind your responsibility. As custodian of the cats, you must keep the cats
licensed, vaccinated and restrained. In unincorporated Harris County, the
custodian of every cat is responsible for any behavior of that cat.
For laws pertaining to pets in unincorporated Harris County, review
regulations http://publichealth.harriscountytx.gov/Resources/Animalsand-Pets/AnimalLaws/AnimalRegulations#section4.
WCA-RESIDENTIAL GARBAGE COLLECTION INFORMATION
PHONE 281-766-1914
In the future, if you would like to receive emails regarding service, contact
WCA and provide your email address. Phone: 281-368-8397 Email:
CSHouston@wcamerica.com.
At WCA, our highest priority continues to be the health and well-being
of our customers and staff during an evolving situation. Recently, we
learned that one of our drivers has tested positive for the COVID-19 virus.
As a precaution, the helpers and other drivers who have been in close
contact with this driver have been quarantined.
How Will This Affect Your Service? WCA provides an essential service
for the Houston Metroplex and our mission is to provide the best service
possible to our communities. For now, our priority will shift to collect the
putrescible waste first. This is the material that begins to breakdown and
decompose first in the Houston heat.
This means that residents need to separate their putrescible waste from
their bulk waste to ensure proper and timely collection. A two-bag
maximum for bulk, per home, will be picked on your scheduled service
day. WCA/VF Waste Services will not be collecting carpet or construction
materials as regular collection related to this event.
Recycle Services: Until further notice, we are suspending recycle service
for the greater Houston area.
Back Door Services: Until further notice, WCA is requesting that
communities receiving backdoor service, under normal conditions, bring
their containers curbside for the remainder of this event.
MIDDLEGATE VILLAGE
(MG) MIDDLEGATE TRIVIA
Middlegate is one of seven villages within Copperfield. Middlegate has
791 homes and reach-es to Horsepen Creek on its south border and up to
West Road and a portion of Northmead on its north side. At the western
border is Copper Village and to the east is Highway 6. Middlegate is served
by two county water districts, MUD 162 and MUD 163. The Middlegate
Village Community Association is a non profit corporation and it provides
many services including common area maintenance and deed restriction
enforcement. Each home-owner pays an annual assessment to defray
the operating costs of the Association. Prior to 1985, Friendswood
Development Company controlled the operation of the Middlegate
Village Community Association. In March 1985, Friendswood turned the
operation of the Community Association over to the residents.
(MG) MUD DISTRICTS IN MIDDLEGATE
Did you know that two MUDS serve homes within Middlegate? Your
house is served by just one, not both. Middlegate is divided by a drainage
ditch, with MUD #162 on one side and MUD #163 on other side.
Let us find you the perfect
house/condo/townhouse/new construction home!
H2O Consulting is the operator that services MUD #162. Call H2O
Consulting at 281-861-6215 with any concerns for MUD #162; it’s a 24-
hour service number.
Inframark is the operator that services MUD #163. Call Inframark (Formerly
Severn Trent) at 281-579-4500 for MUD #163. For after-hour emergencies,
contact Inframark dispatch team at 281-398-8211.
A Municipal Utility District (MUD) is a political subdivision of the State
of Texas authorized by the Texas Commission of Environmental Quality
(TCEQ) to provide water, sewage, drainage and other utility-related
services within the MUD boundaries.
MUD operators and contractors work with the MUD districts to maintain
services and to make needed repairs. You may have seen their personnel
at work on your street.
(MG) MIDDLEGATE COLUMN
This is Middlegate’s column in the newsletter. What would you like to
see here? Share your thoughts directly with the Middlegate newsletter
committee at mgvnewsletter4@gmail.com. If you have an interest in
contributing articles or photography to the column, share that interest
too. The newsletter committee looks forward to hearing from you.
(MG) GET APPROVAL FIRST BEFORE
UPDATING OR CHANGING HOUSE EXTERIOR
Among exterior changes needing approval are: building or replacing a
patio cover, replacing or constructing a fence, painting siding or trim,
installing solar panels, replacing roof, constructing a storage shed,
installing a pool. This is just a partial list. The application details more
improvements. Always feel free to contact SCS. In an effort to maintain
property values, deed restrictions require that exterior changes be
approved by an Architectural Review Committee prior to commencing
work. Their evaluation addresses architectural harmony, color,
location, minimum construction standards and restrictions. Submit the
architectural review application to SCS Management Services, Inc. SCS
can process applications submitted digitally. The application is located
on Middlegate website under Resources tab. Call SCS at 281-463-1777 or
email at info@scsmgmt.com for assistance.
SAFETY BREAKS: One ten-minute break will be taken at ten (10) minutes
before the hour, every hour. This is to serve as a time of rest for our guests.
This safety break is for everyone including adults. In the fair housing act,
it states that it is age discrimination to not allow anyone under the age
of 18 in the pool during this 10-minute break. For this reason, the safety
break is for everyone. Lifeguards will remain on the lifeguard stand
during this break, to ensure the pool is vacant.
CHILD SAFETY POLICY: Unfortunately, drowning is the leading cause of
accidental death for children 1 to 4 years of age. Most cases are a result
of little or no supervision, access to a swimming pool or water front and
can even occur in a bathtub. As your pool management company, Malibu
Aquatics wants to create a safe environment for the children of your
community. We will implement our Child Safety Policy at your swimming
pools for the 2020 swim season. This policy will improve accountability,
create awareness and ensure that every child is safe when visiting
community pools.
The Child Safety Policy will be executed with the following rules:
• Children 48 inches and under in height entering the swimming pool
area will be required to wear a wristband issued by the lifeguards.
• A red wristband indicates that the child has NOT passed a Swim Test
administered by the lifeguards. Children with a red wristband are issued
a lifejacket that must be worn at all times. If the guardian elects to not
have the child wear a lifejacket, the guardian is then required to be within
arm’s length of the child at ALL times. The guardian is also issued a red
wristband.
• A green wristband indicates that the child has passed a Swim Test. Once
a child has passed the Swim Test, the child’s name will be added to our
Child Safety Log. Each visit to the pool, the child will need to give the
lifeguard their name and a green wristband will be issued. Children on
the Safety Log are not required to wear a life jacket or to be within arm’s
reach of their guardian.
• The Swim Test consists of swimming one length of the pool unassisted.
This includes no aid from flotation devices, the lane ropes, pool walls or
the bottom of the pool.
• Any child on the Child Safety Log can be asked to perform a Swim Test
again, should the lifeguards on duty feel the child’s swimming ability has
diminished.
Educate yourself with the deed restrictions for our community. They are
available for reading or download on the community website, under
neighborhood. If this is the case, call animal control! If you are walking
your dogs, keep them on a leash at ALL times. This is a deed restriction
and also against Harris County Leash Law. Be considerate of others. Many
children are afraid of animals and also people in the neighborhood do
not appreciate dogs running around loose in their lawns. Please pickup
after your dogs, no one wants to step in your dog’s poop.
(NM) SUGGESTIONS AND TIPS ON HOW
TO PROPERLY NUMBER YOUR HOME
Believe it or not, a large number of house numbers are not visible from
the street during the daytime. It’s even worse at night. A badly displayed
number can hinder the police, ambulance and fire department in the
event of an emergency.
Street curb - The number should be painted about two feet from the
driveway in the direction of the house. Most paintings are inexpensive. If
the driveway has a curb of its own, this is fine as long as the number faces
traffic. Black numbers painted on white background are excellent. They
are clearly visible from a distance even with very little light.
House - The best place is near the front door and within the radius of
the porch light. Above the front door is usually a good spot. Any location
close to the door and above eye level is good.
• Trees and bushes must not block the view from the road. Avoid having it
away from the front door, such as over the garage door.
• Pick a color that has a light and dark contrast with the background. The
background is usually the color of the house. This will make the number
stand out so it can be viewed from the street. If your house has a dark
color, you need a number in a light color. If your house has a light color,
get a dark color number. For example, a black number is perfect on a
white house. A white number will show clearly on a brick house.
(SC) FROM THE BOARD
Dear neighbors,
During this COVID-19 pandemic we ask that each of you continue to take
care of yourselves and each other and continue to follow the suggested
policies:
1. Keeping social distance. No social gatherings for now and keep a
distance of 6 feet or more when around others.
2. Staying home as much as possible.
3. Get the supplies you need without hording supplies that others may
also need.
4. Be extra patient with each other and show love and compassion at all
times.
This is a time for us all to come together as a neighborhood and as a
Nation. Together we will overcome. Your SCHOA Board is working hard
to help ensure that all the duties and functions of your HOA are still
operating and in place during this time. All normal business is still being
taken care of in a safe and practical manner. We are, as always, willing to
help and work with all homeowners who may have issues or hardship. If
you have any Association issue, deed restriction violation or other, please
feel free to call our Association Manager at 713-329-7153. We stand with
you, our neighbor, as we all navigate our way in this difficult time. Our
thoughts, heart and prayers are over each of you.
Sincerely, Your Board of Directors
(SC) EGRETS AND HERONS
The snowy egrets and black-billed night herons are coming to your
neighborhood and we need considerable homeowner engagement
to protect our community from the devastation they leave behind.
The Southcreek Village HOA Board of Directors is consulting with
Southdown Village HOA to deter invasive heronries such as can be found
at Southdown Village’s pool area and previously around Middlegate
Village’s pool area. This summer small numbers of them nested in
the Autumn Laurel Pool park, in trees along Royal Gardens Road and
May 2020 | Copperfield

especially around the gazebo in Signal Creek Park. These birds are
generally protected under state and federal law and legally cannot be
harassed when nesting, especially when eggs and young are in the nest.
We need to start organizing ourselves for mobilization of our community
for volunteers to make noise and operate other deterrents at the pool
park. We are asking if you have trees with their nests please remove the
nest. Being pro-active can prevent considerable damage to our property,
parks and pools. These birds caused considerable damage and expense
to Southdown pool area last year. See information and tips under CCA at
the front of the newsletter.
(SC) STREET PARKING
Please be courteous to your neighbors when street parking. Do not
obstruct driveways or sidewalks. Should you need to briefly park a trailer
in the street, please make sure it’s not obstructing anyone’s access to
their driveway. As a reminder, it is prohibited to street park commercial
vehicles in Southcreek - this includes, but is not limited to, semi-trailer
trucks and heavy equipment vehicles.
If a vehicle has been parked in the street and left with outdated tags it is
considered abandoned and will be towed.
(SC) BOARD MEETINGS
Copperfield Southcreek Board meetings are on the third Thursday of
each month. Please feel free to stop by the Autumn Laurel Pool at 6 PM
for a recap on events impacting Southcreek. This is a public forum where
you can ask any questions or express any concerns to the Southcreek
HOA Board.
(SC) HOA DUES
Friendly reminder! Your HOA dues help keep Southcreek looking like as
great as it does-please make it a priority to pay your dues if you have not
yet done so.
(SC) HARRIS COUNTY SHERIFF DEPT.
See something fishy going on the neighborhood? Report any suspicious
activity to the Harris County Sheriff’s non-emergency line at 713-221-
6000. Remember, the patrolling Sheriff’s deputies depend on us as much
as we depend on them.
(SC) TRASH DAYS
Please be courteous to your neighbors and do not block the sidewalks
with trashcans, debris or vehicles. It creates a safety hazard because
walkers are forced to walk in the street. Violations can be issued for
blocking sidewalks. Also, please store all coolers, trashcans etc. behind
your fence, not so your neighbor can see them.
(SC) DEED RESTRICTION LETTERS
Please do not ignore deed restriction letters sent to your residence about
deed restriction violations. Doing so can subject the property owner to
a $35 charge per CERTIFIED letter if not settled by the homeowner in the
time noted in the letter. Associa (PMG) manages this process and should
be contacted If you require assistance in complying. Associa (PMG) will
work with you to get the violation resolved, IN ACCORDANCE WITH THE
COVENANTS, CONDITIONS AND RESTRICITONS EVERY HOMEOWNER
AGREED TO ABIDE BY, SOME VIOLATIONS CAN BE CURED VIA THE
ASSOCIATIONS SELF HELP RESTRICTION. The Association can hire a
contractor to repair THESE VIOLATIONS and charge THE COST OF THIS
SERVICE charged back to the Home Owner.
The South Creek Village Community Association takes these violations
very seriously and strives to keep up the Southcreek standards for
attractive, well maintained homes. If you should receive a violation,
please take this seriously and CORRECT the violation. If the violation is
not CORRECTED, the Southcreek Village Community Association will BE
FORCED to turn it over to its legal representatives. Once that happens
all future expenses are born by the homeowner. There is a charge of
$125 AND UP FOR EACH LETTER. Please note that The Southcreek Village
SOUTHDOWN VILLAGE NEWS
(SD) SOUTHDOWN CRIME WATCH COMMITTEE
NEIGHBORS HELPING NEIGHBORS - THERE HAS NEVER BEEN A BETTER
TIME THAN NOW. Our Southdown Community is going above and
beyond during the COVID - 19 pandemic. Here are a few examples of how
neighbors who know each other come together to help our Southdown
Community with good deeds and acts of kindness.
Supporting our Deputies • Donated bags of individually packaged
snacks and delivered to the satellite offices at the Community Center.
• Purchased gift cards from close-by fast food restaurants where deputies
can drive through and pick up a meal.
Bringing a Smile to our Neighbors • One aspiring artist painted rocks
and dropped them on neighbor’s curbs.
• A Sharing Box (like the little Library) was placed near the mailboxes so
that neighbors can take or add books, puzzles and games.
• Making a daily telephone call to check on a neighbor who lives alone.
Staying Busy
• A walking group that looks like a parade coming down the street as they
practice social distancing.
• Printing out and leaving the new WCA guidelines for trash pickup and
recycling on each recycling bin.
Our Southdown Community is a great place to live. There has never been
a better time than now to get to know your neighbors!
CRIME WATCH TIPS
The key to an effective crime watch program is to communicate - simply
knowing your neighbors and talking. Always let a trusted neighbor know
when you are on vacation or out of town for a long period. When you
are away from home, these simple, preventative measures help prevent
home burglaries: 1) always set your burglar alarm; 2) install keyed dead
locks and don’t leave the key in the deadbolt lock; 3) install motion-sensor
lights; 4) don’t hide a spare key anywhere that can be easily discovered;
5) stop the mail or ask a friend to get it; 6) provide less hiding spaces for
burglars by following the 3/6 rule where shrubs are trimmed in front of
the house no higher than 3 feet from the ground and trim trees so that
the lowest branches are at least 6 feet up; 7) lock up ladders and tools that
could be used to break in; 8) leave a radio on turned to a talk show station;
9) put lamps on a timer; 10) turn down the phone’s ringer; 11) bolt down
safes so they can’t be picked up and carried out; 12) hide valuables in a
hollowed out book or a fake wall outlet and 13) consider placing safety
film over windows near door handles to make glass hard to smash.
BLOCK CAPTAINS & NATIONAL NIGHT OUT (NNO)
Westcreek still needs block captains. If you want to know if your street
has a block captain or you would like to volunteer to be a block captain,
contact Larry Berger at lberger@comcast.net. Our crime watch committee
is already planning the 2020 National Night Out, which occurs the first
Tuesday in October. If you would like more information about NNO in
Westcreek or if you would be interested in hosting a gathering for NNO,
please contact Larry Berger.
WESTCREEK LANDSCAPE COMMITTEE
Meetings - 2 nd Monday of every month at 6:30 PM
Location - Forest Heights Pool Meeting Room
The Westcreek Landscape Committee generally meets on the 2 nd Monday
every month. If you are interested in helping make a difference in our
neighborhood and would like to become part of the group, we welcome
and encourage your attendance and hope to see you there - there is
always room for you! Contrary to popular opinions we do not do the
manual labor! We are a friendly group of decision makers!
Comments, suggestions or questions regarding common areas or other
landscape topics are always welcome. The Landscape Committee at
OH! NO! The Birds:
The HOA has contracted with a professional to trim the trees at both
Forest Heights and Hudson Oaks park. This trimming is to remove the
dense canopy, which appears to be appealing for the nesting of herons
and egrets. Please continue to monitor your neighborhoods for possible
nesting for at least another month.
Please Be a Good Neighbor: The Landscape Committee would like to thank
all who volunteered for both the Easter Egg Hunt and the Community
Planting. Though both events had to be cancelled, our appreciation to all
who agreed to assist with these events. Thanks to the person(s) who have
CREATIVE WRITING & ILLUSTRATION
SUMMER CAMPS
The iWRITE Organization will host Creative Writing & Illustration Summer
Camps around the Houston area, allowing young writers to bring their
stories to life! iWRITE was founded ten years ago by children’s author,
Melissa Williams Murphy, in order to give students the opportunity to
build their writing skills and boost their creative confidence through all
kinds of writing programs and publishing opportunities. This summer
young writers can learn straight from the pros!
The iWRITE summer camps and workshops will be held in June and July
in the Cypress, Spring Branch and Ft. Bend areas with opportunities for
kids ages 8 to 16 years old. Students will learn character development
skills that can be used in all types of writing, how authors brainstorm and
turn ideas into a story, how illustrators bring characters to life through
art, fun editing techniques and even how to get your work published.
Visit iWRITE.org to learn more, meet the instructors and register. If you
would like to apply for a scholarship or sponsor a child, please contact
Nicole@iWRITE.org or call the office at 713-845-5811.
Buttermilk Biscuits
You could make this on National Buttermilk Biscuits Day May 14th!
Garlic Shrimp Scampi
You could make this on National Shrimp Day May 10th!
INGREDIENTS:
1 (8 ounce) package angel hair pasta
1/2 cup butter
2 cloves garlic, sliced
1 1/2 pounds shrimp, peeled and deveined
1/3 cup white wine
3/4 cup dry bread crumbs
3 tablespoons grated Parmesan
cheese
DIRECTIONS:Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add angel hair pasta
and return pot to boil. Cook until al dente. Drain well. In a large saucepan, melt
butter, saute garlic until tender, remove garlic and discard. Add shrimp and cook
until colored pink. Stir in white wine. The bread crumbs are used as thickening,
so stir in a little at a time until desired thickness is reached. Serve shrimp over
angel hair pasta, sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. http://allrecipes.com/
INGREDIENTS:
4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon baking soda
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
4 teaspoons baking powder
1 cup lard
2 cups buttermilk
DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Whisk together
flour, salt, baking soda, cream of tartar and baking powder. Cut lard into flour
mixture using a pastry blender until crumbly; stir in buttermilk. Turn mixture
onto a floured surface and knead just a few times to form a moist dough. Roll
dough out 1-inch thick; cut biscuits with a cookie cutter or round glass. Place
biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until tops
are golden, about 12 minutes. http://allrecipes.com/
Gardening Tips For May
Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are
growing fast. Here are some tasks to keep your landscape
beautiful and productive:
Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and
annuals including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane,
lobularia, sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados,
duranta and bat-faced cuphea.
Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or
nursery plants, okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter
squash, pumpkins, basil, peppers, lima beans, eggplant,
garlic chives and Malabar greens. If you don’t want to
dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting here and
there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular
new trend!
Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge
or straight sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”.
Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to
deter weeds from getting a start.
Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to promote new blooms.
Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release organic fertilizer.
Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent light sprinkling.
Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders! Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding spots.
