Preventing the spread of 

COR NAVIRUS 

Houston Methodist is committed to keeping Houstonians safe during the coronavirus outbreak. While most people 

may only experience mild symptoms, it’s important to keep those who are more vulnerable safe. By following these tips, 

along with guidance from the CDC and public health officials, you can help slow the spread of COVID-19. 

WASH YOUR HANDS OFTEN. 

Proper hand hygiene can prevent the 

spread of viruses. Use an antibacterial soap, 

wash for 20 seconds and dry your hands 

thoroughly. If you don’t have soap, use hand 

sanitizer. Also, avoid touching your face, 

particularly your eyes, nose and mouth. 

PRACTICE COUGH ETIQUETTE. 

Cover your coughs and sneezes. Use 

a tissue when you cough or sneeze, 

dispose of it properly and then wash or 

sanitize your hands. Do not reuse your 

tissues. 

AVOID CLOSE CONTACT 

AND CROWDS. 

Practice social distancing: Keep about six 

feet away from others as often as possible. 

If you must venture out, try to go during 

non-peak hours. 

DISINFECT DAILY. 

Keeping your home clean and disinfected 

will prevent the spread of coronavirus, 

and any other lurking germs. Remember 

surfaces like faucets, door knobs, 

refrigerator door handles and toilets. 

SKIP HANDSHAKES AND HUGS. 

COVID-19 spreads primarily through 

person-to-person contact, via respiratory 

droplets formed when a sick person 

coughs or sneezes. Instead, consider 

waving or simply smiling and saying “hello.” 

SELF-QUARANTINE. 

When it comes to staying home, it’s 

better to be safe and stay put if you’ve 

traveled or come into contact with 

someone who has COVID-19 — even 

if you don’t have symptoms. If you start 

to feel ill, use telemedicine or call ahead 

before seeing your doctor. 

WHAT TO DO IF YOU SUSPECT YOU HAVE CORONAVIRUS: If you think you have been exposed to COVID-19 and develop a fever, cough or 

difficulty breathing, you can speak to one of our Virtual Urgent Care providers in the MyMethodist app to help determine if testing is needed and advise 

2 you on where you should go. You can also call your doctor for medical advice.

Garlic Shrimp Scampi 

You could make this on National Shrimp Day May 10th! 

INGREDIENTS: 

1 (8 ounce) package angel hair pasta 

1/2 cup butter 

2 cloves garlic, sliced 

1 1/2 pounds shrimp, peeled and deveined 

1/3 cup white wine 

3/4 cup dry bread crumbs 

3 tablespoons grated Parmesan 

cheese 

Buttermilk Biscuits 

You could make this on National Buttermilk Biscuits Day May 14th! 

DIRECTIONS:Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add angel hair pasta 

and return pot to boil. Cook until al dente. Drain well. In a large saucepan, melt 

butter, saute garlic until tender, remove garlic and discard. Add shrimp and cook 

until colored pink. Stir in white wine. The bread crumbs are used as thickening, 

so stir in a little at a time until desired thickness is reached. Serve shrimp over 

angel hair pasta, sprinkled with Parmesan cheese. http://allrecipes.com/ 

INGREDIENTS: 

4 cups all-purpose flour 

1 teaspoon salt 

1 teaspoon baking soda 

1 teaspoon cream of tartar 

4 teaspoons baking powder 

1 cup lard 

2 cups buttermilk 

DIRECTIONS: Preheat oven to 450 degrees F (230 degrees C). Whisk together 

flour, salt, baking soda, cream of tartar and baking powder. Cut lard into flour 

mixture using a pastry blender until crumbly; stir in buttermilk. Turn mixture 

onto a floured surface and knead just a few times to form a moist dough. Roll 

dough out 1-inch thick; cut biscuits with a cookie cutter or round glass. Place 

biscuits on an ungreased baking sheet. Bake in the preheated oven until tops

Gardening Tips For May 

Warm weather means our gardens and landscapes are 

growing fast. Here are some tasks to keep your landscape 

beautiful and productive: 

Flowers: Time to plant summer blooming perennials and 

annuals including plumbago, zinnias, angelonia, purslane, 

lobularia, sunflowers, yellow bells, pride of Barbados, 

duranta and bat-faced cuphea. 

Vegetables: May is a great time to plant, from seed or 

nursery plants, okra, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, winter 

squash, pumpkins, basil, peppers, lima beans, eggplant, 

garlic chives and Malabar greens. If you don’t want to 

dedicate an area of your yard, consider planting here and 

there in your flowerbeds. Edible landscaping is a popular 

new trend! 

Lawns: Water 1/2 to 1” of irrigation per week. A rain gauge or straight sided container (such as a tuna fish can) will help you know how long 

to run your irrigation system to apply 1/2”. 

Weeding: Hand pull or hoe weeds while they are still young or better yet, maintain a 3” layer of mulch in all vegetable and flowerbeds to 

deter weeds from getting a start. 

Pruning: Remove spent blooms on spring and summer annuals to promote new blooms. 

Fertilizing: Fertilize flowerbeds and vegetable gardens w/slow release organic fertilizer. 

Water: Deep soakings between rain events is better than frequent light sprinkling. 

Birds: Spring migration continues until mid-May. Clean bird feeders! Replace water in bird baths to avoid creating mosquito breeding spots.

VLP POOL RULES 

The VLP pool is open Tuesdays-Sundays, 5 AM-10 PM year round for your 

enjoyment. It is CLOSED on Monday for chemical applications. Please 

consider the following pool rules, while using the Pool: 

• The pool closes at 10 PM daily. Please be considerate of our neighbors 

and exit the pool at this time. Anyone inside the pool area after 10 PM will 

be considered trespassing. 

• Two guests per resident household are allowed. No guests may enter 

the pool without a resident present. Do not open the gate for strangers 

or prop gate open. 

• Pool parties are not allowed at the pool. 

• Private swim lessons are not allowed at the community pool due to 

vendor and insurance compliance. 

• Keep the pool area and bathrooms clean. 

• The life rings are not to be used as toys. In case of any eventuality at the 

pool, they are critical for safety and rescue operation.

VLP SAFETY TIPS 

Officer Glentzer patrols VLP and shared the following valuable tips. Safety 

and awareness are key, especially when approaching the holidays. 

• If you SEE something, SAY something. Don’t be afraid to call in suspicious 

activity and behavior. It gives our officers reason to investigate further 

and could deter criminal activity. 

• DO NOT OPEN your DOOR for solicitors. As a community we should not 

encourage them by opening our doors. If a solicitor refuses to leave your 

property, please call 911 immediately to report them. 

• Promply collect your packages when they are delivered, as thieves are 

more than ready to steal these parcels. 

• When shopping or stopping at the bank, be aware of your surroundings 

and ALWAYS lock your car. 

• Remove valuables and lock your car at night. Unlocked vehicle doors 

make for an easy target. 

• Activate your home alarm when leaving 

• Lock all windows and doors before leaving

TNG is the operator for MUD 370. Villages at Lakepointe, Lakes on Eldridge 

North and Nanaksar Colony make up MUD 370. 

The meter readings and total monthly usage are listed on your invoices. 

The average usage per month this time of year is approximately 10,000 

gallons. If you are using significantly more water than that, check for 

things like running toilets or leaks. TNG is also a good resource and can

Food Drive 

MESA-OUTREACH FOOD DRIVE 

MAY 9, 2020 

MESA-OUTREACH is still open and distributing food and produce to 

area residents in need. Because of the Covid-19 invasion, MESA is 

experiencing a significant increase in clientele while at the same time 

suffering from large reductions in donations. If you are able to help, 

please consider donating basic food items during MESA’s upcoming 

food drive on Saturday, May 9, 2020 from 9 AM-1 PM. The most critical 

items are provided on the list below. We will be accepting donations in 

the parking lot of Bear Creek United Methodist Church at 16000 Rippling 

Water Dr. Houston 77084. Please stay in your car and we will unload your 

donations for you. 

The MESA Food Pantry is open on the 2 nd and 4 th Tuesday evenings of 

each month from 5-7:30 PM. The Produce Truck distributions are on the 

3 rd Saturday morning of each month, with distribution from 8:30-11:00 

AM. The distributions are staffed by MESA’s volunteer HEROS using a 

drive-through distribution methodology. 

Financial donations are also needed to purchase certain types of food 

and other needed items. Donations may be made online through our 

website at www.mesa-outreach.org. Without your help, MESA will not be 

able to serve the increasing needs of those in our community.

Golf Tournaments 

33ND ANNUAL B. F. ADAM GOLF CLASSIC 

POSTPONED TO NOVEMBER 

In the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, Cy-Fair Educational Foundation 

(CFEF) trustees graded 1200+ scholarship applications and met via Zoom 

to award more than $635,000 in scholarships. For Cypress-Fairbanks ISD 

graduating seniors planning to attend Lone Star College full-time in the 

fall, our application is open now through May 11, 2020. This summer, the 

Foundation will award $72,000 from the Edwin C. Schroeder Endowment 

Fund. The Foundation looks forward to recognizing our 2020 scholarship 

recipients this August. 

With the Stay Home - Work Safe Mandate through the end of April, the 

Foundation has decided to postpone the B. F. Adam Golf Classic until 

the COVID-19 risk is minimal within our community for the safety of our 

288 golfers and over 100 volunteers, trustees and staff, who help make 

this event a tremendous success, as well as the staff at BlackHorse Golf 

Club. Our 33 rd annual B. F. Adam Golf Class has been moved to Monday, 

November 16, 2020. 

Celebrating 50 years as a non-profit raising money to fund scholarships 

for Cypress-Fairbanks ISD high school graduates, the Cy-Fair Educational 

Foundation is looking forward to our exciting Fall lineup of events.

VBS 

ST. AIDAN’S EPISCOPAL VBS 

Take a ride with us for an exciting week of VBS, July 13 th -17 th ! Early 

registration costs $20. Late registration is June 1 st , costs $30. Our theme 

this year is Rocky Railway; Jesus’ Power Pulls us Through. In addition, we’ll 

be having Armored Sports come in again this year for after VBS fun! 

From 12-4 PM, Armored Sports will run a Bible based sports camp. The 

participants will play fun games like dodgeball, kickball, capture the flag, 

and games revolving around basketball, soccer and more! The cost in 

addition to VBS is $115 if registered before June 1 st and $125 if registered 

after June 1 st . Note: Registration for Armored Sports must be done 

separately from VBS. 

Summer Camps 

CAMP CORNERSTONE WEEK LONG CAMP 

Camp Cornerstone is a week-long camp sponsored by Cornerstone 

United Methodist Church and is for children ages 2 through the 

completion of 4th grade. Children must be 2 by June 1, 2020. Camp 

hours are 9:30 AM-1 PM. There are 3 sessions throughout the summer 

and you are invited to participate in any or all! Registration open. Session 

I - “Safari” is June 15-19, 2020; Session II - “Christmas in July” is July 13-17, 

2020; Session III - “Summer Olympics” is August 3-7, 2020. The cost per 

camp per child is $125 and is due at the time of registration. To download

MOSQUITO CONTROL 

1. Empty, remove, cover or turn upside down any receptacle that would 

hold water - particularly old bottles and tin cans. 

2. Change water and scrub vases holding flowers or cuttings twice each 

week - or grow cutting in sand. 

3. Discard old tires or store them indoors. 

4. Screen rain barrels and openings to water tanks or cisterns. Seal 

cisterns not in actual use. 

5. Repair leaky plumbing and outside faucets. They may cause standing

School program for boys and girls ages 4+. This unique development 

program is solely focused on developing the child/player through 

quality soccer instruction and character development. This program will

and directed by professional coaches. The soccer school’s aim is to 

provide a strong foundation for every child to have the opportunity to

dependent on computers 

and the information that they 

store than ever before. From 

spyware, viruses and Trojans 

to identity theft and computer 

hardware malfunctions - 

any disruption can have a 

huge impact on our lives. No 

matter how savvy the user, 

safe computing practices are 

a combination of physical 

protections using computer 

software and security settings 

and the secure actions of the 

user. You need both to make 

a difference. Below are 10 tips that will help you protect your computer 

and ultimately the information stored on it. 

1. Keep your computer updated - In the evolving world of software viruses, 

it is essential that computer owners use anti-virus software and keep it upto-date. 

Most anti-virus software gives the user the ability to do automatic 

updates. Whether individuals choose to update their operating system 

software automatically or manually, we recommend making it a continuous 

process. It is also important to keep other software on your computer 

updated. Software updates often include essential bug fixes and security 

features that address existing vulnerabilities. Finally, enable the personal 

firewall on your computer. This will help to keep unauthorized people from 

snooping around your computer when it’s connected to the Internet. 

2. Create strong, secure passwords - There is power in strong 

passwords. We recommend passwords that contain at least 8 characters 

with a combination of letters, numbers and symbols. Strong passwords 

are less likely to be hacked than very generic passwords. Use creative 

pass-phases to avoid having to write down a password. Do not share 

your passwords with anyone. 

3. Download files legally - Along with the possibility of significant legal 

penalties, downloading music and movies from peer-to-peer networks

can be harmful to your machine. These downloaded files are sometimes 

riddled with viruses and spyware. 

4. Keep personal information safe - Reduce your risk of identity theft. 

Never share your personal information via email, no matter how official 

the email looks. Official business that requires personal information 

should not happen via unsecured email. 

5. Scan email attachments and validate links - In an effort to keep 

viruses off your machine, scan all attachments that are sent to you. Viruses 

can lurk in emails from friends and family. While you may be fooled about 

an email that contains a photo you would like to see from a friend, antivirus 

software will know the difference. If you receive a link in an email 

from a trusted source, hover over the link using your mouse and look in 

the bottom bar of your web browser to reveal the true URL and validate 

that the link is legitimate. This will ensure that you know where you are 

going on the Internet and whether or not you want to go there. 

6. Lock your computer - When leaving your computer unattended, 

physically lock it to prevent theft of the machine. We also suggest that 

users lock the screen with a password to safeguard data. 

7. Log off any public areas - Remember when using a public computer 

or network, it is just that…public. Be sure that you completely log off the 

site or machine when you are finished using it. Users should be especially 

mindful to uncheck boxes that will remember users’ login information 

when logging into online services, such as email and bank accounts. 

8. Back up important data - We have seen final papers vanish - hard drives 

crash and files become corrupt. If you have important information that you 

cannot afford to lose, back it up. We recommend that you store this information 

securely and even consider storing extra copies at another location. 

9. Limit information on social media sites - People will post almost anything 

on social media site. For many people, birth dates, anniversaries, addresses, 

phone numbers and a lot of other personal information can be found on social 

media sites. Protect yourself from identity theft and other scams by limiting 

what information you disclose online and who can see that information. 

10. Avoid surfing websites that you don’t already know - Browsers are 

quickly becoming one of the larger vulnerabilities in computing. Adware 

and spyware are written specifically to exploit Internet Explorer and 

Firefox. So try and stick with the websites you trust. 

While these steps are not foolproof, they will go a long way towards 

extending the life of your machine and protecting the valuable
