A message from the Superintendent of Schools

April 24, 2020, from Superintendent Larry Mussoline PhD

We have been communicating with you throughout this unprecedented time

in our lives. We know you understand the Governor closed schools in New

Jersey until May 15th “at least.” You all understand that he may opt to try

to open them after May 15th or keep them closed. We have no idea what his

decision will be. We have no guidance as to what that opening may look

like. We all trust it will be based on scientific data and the health and safety of

everyone.

Over the weekend, I read through the surveys you completed for Dr. Murray.

They were as expected. Many praised the efforts of our school system to gear

up for online learning so quickly. Many others expressed concerns such as too

much work, too little work, not enough face-to-face time, the real fear of lost

learning, and maybe just total disillusionment over the whole world situation

we are all in where parents are expected to work at home, have the proper

meals ready, quarantine inside, and help teach children.

Daunting tasks; all of them.

Those of us in education knew that we could sustain this new learning

system for a short period of time. A longer period of online learning would be

daunting for all of us. We are a traditional school system, custodial in nature,

educative by design. Children come to school each day, stay for a period of

time, are taught face-to-face, and go home. They do that 180 times during a

school year. Taking that system and transitioning 200-plus teachers and 2,800

students into a full, online, K-12 cyber school with one day to plan was a very

heavy lift. This world was thrust upon all of us without much warning. No

directional signs are (or were) up and the street lights are off all over the

place in this pandemic society. So, as many of you said in the survey, this is a

time to praise all of us making the best of this situation. Health care workers.

Emergency personnel. Grocery store workers. Small

business and restaurant owners. Truck drivers.

Educators. And so many others who are trying to

work through this situation, making the best of

these difficult times.

Let’s do this in the next few days. Take some time

to thank your child’s teacher(s). Take some time to

thank your child’s principal(s). Take some time to

thank a Board of Education member. Go out of your

way to do that. I know you all know this fact, but

everyone above took a brick-and-mortar, traditional

school system, and transformed it into an online

learning environment overnight. They did it without

review packets, without paper assignments being

laboriously sent home, and without saying we are

simply going to review while we are not learning traditionally. The people

above created a total cyber environment where we are continuing with

lessons to the best of our abilities, picking up where we left off over a month

ago. Again, I know you understand this, but what your Board of Education,

principals, and teachers created was nothing short of a miraculous learning

environment in your school system. Because of the teachers, the principals,

and the Board, Haddonfield is a leader in their pandemic educational plan

in the state and even the nation. Take some time to thank them all for their

forward-looking leadership and work in these unparalleled times.

There is a lot of information [in the latest School District News – scan QR

code n] for you to read over detailing the unrivaled environment we are all

experiencing. Enjoy the newsletter. In the next newsletter, Mr. Chuck Klaus will

take over this column. I can’t tell you how excited I am about that fact. Chuck is

as honest as the day is long and as skilled a leader as I have ever seen.

Best wishes to you all.

Caregivers seek volunteers

Interfaith Caregivers was founded on the simple but profound vision of

neighbors helping neighbors. The organization supports senior and disabled

residents of Haddon Heights and Haddonfield, at no charge.

At a time when all New Jerseyans are staying in place, the need for Interfaith

Caregivers’ services is even greater. The organization’s clients still need

assistance with tasks such as obtaining groceries, or medications from the

pharmacy. Interfaith Caregivers has a set of protocols that respect the call for

social distancing while making sure those served have what they need.

Not interested in grocery shopping? Volunteers are also making social calls

to clients to make sure that even though we are socially distancing we are still

maintaining connections with each other.

Residents who are able and interested in helping are encouraged to email

executive director Nancy DeLaura at ndelaura@ifchaddons.org.

Chuck Klaus named Superintendent of Schools

During its meeting on Thu Apr 30, the Board of Education approved the

appointment of Charles Kraus as superintendent of the Haddonfield School

District, effective July 1, 2020.

The text that follows is from a statement released by the board.

On Thursday, April 30, 2020, Charles Klaus was approved to become the

Superintendent of Schools for the Haddonfield School District. He will assume

that role on July 1, 2020.

Klaus became the Acting Assistant Superintendent in June 2018, when then-

Assistant Superintendent Michael Wilson took a medical leave. Klaus served

under Dr. Lawrence

Mussoline, becoming Assistant Superintendent in May 2019 upon Wilson’s

retirement. Last month, on March 12, Mussoline announced his resignation,

and the Board posted the Superintendent’s job internally.

“Chuck Klaus has served as Assistant Superintendent for two years,” said

Board President Adam Sangillo. “The Board got to know him not only as a

hard worker but also as someone who shares our vision of the future. We

are confident that Chuck will lead us in the right direction to best serve our

students, families, faculty, and staff.”

Klaus came to Haddonfield as an English teacher in August of 1994 after

teaching for seven years in Maple Shade. He advanced to English department

facilitator in 2004, and became the high school’s Assistant Principal in 2008.

After a one-year post as Principal of Central Elementary School, Klaus returned

to the Haddonfield Memorial High School (HMHS) as Principal in 2011.

“I had the pleasure of working with Chuck for one year as the Dean

of Students,” said HMHS Principal Tammy McHale. “He is extremely

knowledgeable and practical, and he has an innate ability to always put

“Chuck cares deeply

English teacher Corinne

to navigate our systems,

and he works carefully

Currently a resident

Klaus raised three

“My journey back and

taxes by

May 31, or ...!

During their special

meeting on Tue Apr

14, the Borough

commissioners set the

interest rate at 0% for

property taxes paid after

the due date of May 1,

2020 but on or before

May 31, 2020.

Their action was

in recognition of the

financial difficulties

some residents are

experiencing, because of

the COVID-19 pandemic.

The due date for

second quarter tax

payments is May 1. The

Borough grants a tenday

grace period and

does not charge interest

on payments received

during the grace period.

The commissioners’

action effectively

increases the grace

period by 30 days – but

only on property taxes

for the current period.

The 0% rate does not

apply to any back taxes.

Property taxes that

are not paid by May 31,

2020 will be subject to

interest at the rate of 8%

per annum up to $1,500

and 18% per annum

over $1,500, calculated

from the due date (May

1) until the date the

payment is actually

received.

Although the Borough

Hall is closed to the

general public, payments

can still be made “in

person” by placing them

in the black mailbox in

front of the building.

Place the tax bill and

check in an envelope

marked “Tax Office.” The

box is emptied daily.

Paying by mail? The

address is 242 Kings

Plays & Players revises line-up

The show must go on … “in July!” says Haddonfield Plays & Players.

While the theatre is closed in adherence with state and federal guidelines,

members are actively working behind the scenes to adjust the 2020 line-up.

Upon reopening, the first show will be Picnic. Set in Kansas during the lazy

days of summer, the show has appropriately been rescheduled to run from

July 16 through August 1. (Based on social-distancing guidelines at the time of

the performance, the show may be converted to general admission seating to

accommodate any necessary restrictions.)

Young Frankenstein, originally slated for summer, has been removed from the

2020 season. Future dates for that production are being considered. The

Box Office will contact season ticket holders and single ticket holders for Picnic

and Young Frankenstein to discuss options.

Stay in touch with Plays & Players at haddonfieldplayers.com.

ORGANIC-BASED TURF PROGRAM

We’ve worked with certified turf and soil specialists to develop

a new turf program that will dramatically REDUCE the output

of synthetic fertilizer and salt-based products that have been

overused in our industry for too long.

We incorporated industry-leading,

organic-based soil treatments

and fertilizers with tried-and-true

products that focus on the soil makeup

of your lawn. With this blend, your lawn

can increase its ability to absorb nutrients,

reducing the need for consistent chemical enhancement.

The best defense against insect damage,

turf disease, and weed population is THICK GRASS. This can

be achieved with the assurance that you’re increasing your curb

appeal while reducing synthetic chemical output.

MOSQUITO CONTROL

Our program reduces the feeding

activity of adult mosquitoes,

prevents larvae from hatching, and

repels ticks from your property.

Other businesses treat twice as often as we do,

but since the focus of our trained technicians is prevention,

we can dramatically reduce the amount of insecticide released

into the environment.

Project Poppy postponed

Plan for an art installation at the High School,

commemorating the service men and women of

New Jersey who gave their lives during World War I,

have been postponed until the fall.

Project Poppy calls for 3,837 metal poppies

to cascade from the left corner of Haddonfield

Memorial High School and across Veterans

Memorial Grove, the grassed area in front of the

school – one poppy for each life lost.

The project is being coordinated by Haddonfield

resident and Vietnam veteran Joseph McElroy,

who was inspired by a display of 888,246 ceramic

poppies draped from the Tower of London and

“planted” in its former moat (now grassed),

installed in the summer of 2014 to commemorate

the 100th anniversary of the start of World War I.

The Haddonfield installation was to have been

in place from Memorial Day to Independence Day.

Now, the target is the first week of October. The

tribute will remain in place until Veterans Day

– November 11.

It’s still “full steam ahead” with respect to making

the poppies, however. Individuals, families, and

community organizations are invited to purchase

poppy kits, at $20 apiece, and contribute their

creations to the project.

HADDONFIELD POST 38

COVID-19: Legion Supports Veterans, Families

In the normal course of its “business,” The American Legion provides a wide

variety of services and programs for its members and their families. Now, as

our country mobilizes to defeat the novel coronavirus pandemic, the Legion is

marshaling its resources, nationwide, to ensure that appropriate support and

assistance is available to veterans and their families.

The Legion has reconfigured its website – www.legion.org – to provide visitors

with easy access to vital information about COVID-19, government programs and

benefits for veterans, and the Legion response to this extraordinary challenge.

National Commander Bill Oxford is providing daily updates online, and reporting

examples of how Legion posts and Legionnaires across the country are addressing a

wide variety of needs in their local communities. Some examples:

• Sewing businesses owned by American Legion members in Ohio and California

now are spending their efforts manufacturing protective masks.

• Some posts are hosting Red Cross blood

drives at this time of critical need.

• Post 178 in Millerton NJ provides flags for the

caskets of veterans who have passed away

while being treated at Javits New York Medical

Station.

• Post 47 in Havre de Grace MD has a Pantry

on the Porch of its headquarters, with food for

those affected by the COVID-19 pandemic.

VA expands telehealth services

Using $19.6 billion allocated to it under the $2.2 trillion CARES Act, the

Department of Veterans Affairs has ramped up its telehealth and telemental health

services. Bolstered call center capabilities enable the VA to continue to deliver health

care and mental health services while also mitigating the risk of virus transmission.

The VA is also working with telecommunications companies to provide broadband

services for veterans so they can receive telemental health care.

Crisis Line is open 24/7

The stress that many veterans endure can become even more difficult to cope with

at times such as this. Veterans and their family members who are feeling anxious

or alone and thinking about suicide need to know that no matter what they are

experiencing, support is available to help them get their lives back on track.

The Veterans Crisis Line – 800-273-8255 x 1 – is staffed around-the-clock by

trained, caring, qualified responders. It is available to all veterans, service members,

National Guard and Reserve. family members and friends.

● Both THE AMERICAN LEGION and HADDONFIELD POST 38 celebrated 100 years of service during 2019.

Ever resourceful, WEST POINT GRADUATES across the

country are responding to challenges posed by COVID-19.

A new provider for before- and after-school care

Believing that it is a “best practice” for any organization to look at the

changing landscape of offerings and evaluate service providers on a regular

basis, the Board of Education to decided some months ago to explore options

for before- and after-school child care programs in Haddonfield.

This is not something, it is believed, that has ever been undertaken with

respect to Haddonfield’s child care program. The board saw it as a necessary

step in offering the best options for students, families, and taxpayers.

Child care providers (including Haddonfield Child Care, the current provider)

were invited to present proposals for the board to review. Seven companies

submitted proposals and were interviewed on March 11 by a committee of

three board members, four principals (elementary and middle), assistant

superintendent Chuck Klaus, board secretary Mike Catalano, technology

director John Miller, and superintendent Larry Mussoline.

After narrowing the field to two

providers, members of the committee

conducted reference checks. (Site visits

were not possible because of theCOVID-

19 pandemic.)

During the board meeting on April

23, Chuck Klaus reviewed the selection

process and recommended that

the board contract with AlphaBEST

Education Inc, a North Carolina-based

company serving 45 districts (415 schools) in 13 states. New Jersey districts

served include Hopatcong, Millburn, Mount Olive, Stanhope, and Warren.

During its meeting on April 30, the board voted to approve the proposed

contract with AlphaBEST, effective July 1, 2020.

Novel way to

support stores

The spread of the

coronavirus (COVID-

19) is having a

devastating impact on

small businesses in

Haddonfield. Many have

closed temporarily;

others are operating at

greatly reduced levels.

To help keep some

cash flowing, several

business owners have

created “Haddonfield

Here For Good!” It’s a

way for residents and

others to support and

show appreciation for

their favorite businesses.

The concept is simple:

Go online and purchase

a $20 tee-shirt. All shirts

have the “Haddonfield

Here For Good!” graphic

on the back, while each

participating business

has its own logo on the

left chest.

If you can’t decide

which business you want

to support, order the

generic “Haddonfield”

shirt, or make a

donation.

$10 from each sale

goes to the business.

The more shirts sold,

the more money the

business gets. 100%

of proceeds benefit

the small businesses

of Haddonfield and all

monies collected in the

general fund will be

divided equally among

participating businesses.

When Downtown

Haddonfield gets back

to normal and retail

returns, there will be

special events where

everyone will be invited

to wear their Here For

Good shirts.

Shirts can be

purchased online at

HaddonfieldHereForGood

New: School Board ‘Bulletin’

In March, members of the Board of Education

Communications Committee got together to discuss

the possibility of creating a new document designed

to share information with Haddonfield families and

the community at large.

The committee members are Jaime Grookett

(chair), Adam Sangillo (BOE President), Lynn Hoag,

and Linda Hochgertel.

Each document will be brief and will be posted

the week following each voting meeting of the BOE,

once per month.

The “Board Meeting Bulletin” will feature

information about recent votes and issues as well

as upcoming topics of public interest. It is intended

to be a more informal, accessible way for the

community to learn about Board discussions and

decisions as well as why these decisions are made.

The first Bulletin (for March) was posted on April

3 under News on both the district website and the

board website. The second (April) will be posted by

May 5.

Committee member Lynn Hoag noted: “We

hope to provide the community with a quick and

easy way to get a summary of the issues that are

currently being discussed at board meetings ... the

bulletin allows us to connect those issues to the

district’s strategic plans and goals.”

Historical Society invites input

to document the Virus Year

“COVID-19 is history. Let’s record it!”

That’s the thrust of a new initiative the Historical

Society of Haddonfield has launched: a storygathering

project called “Haddonfield Virus Year.”

The Society is inviting its members, and members

of the community generally, to contribute records of

their experiences for posterity.

“The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all of us,”

says Dana Dorman, the Society’s archivist.

“During this challenging time of school and

business closures, social distancing, or even actual

illness, we at the Historical Society can’t help but

wonder – how will this experience be recorded for

future generations?

“Start writing down your experiences,” Dorman

suggests.

“You can do this in any way that feels right for

you: as a letter, as a diary or an activity log, as

a string of sentences. If you don’t want to write,

document your experiences in whatever other ways

feel right for you: photographs, artwork, audio or

video recordings, etc.”

Haddonfield and the

“Spanish Flu”: 1918-19

By Katherine Mansfield Tassini

The Historical Society of Haddonfield’s “Haddonfield Virus Year” project inspired

me to do some research on the Spanish Influenza in Haddonfield in 1918- 1919.

Until now, I could have told you only one story about it: that a Haddonfield resident

named Norman Nicholson died of the Spanish Influenza while serving at Camp Dix

during World War I. When the Society did its World War I exhibit a few years ago, we

told the story of Norman’s death, along with the three other Haddonfield soldiers who

died during the war.

With the COVID-19 pandemic affecting Haddonfield residents

this spring, I did some research in the Haddon Gazette and

other local newspapers and gained a much fuller picture of

Haddonfield’s experiences during this earlier pandemic.

One of the most interesting observations that this

research has made clear to me regarding the “Great

Influenza of 1918-1919” is how similarly it mimics what is

happening in 2020.

It is generally believed that what became known as the

“Spanish Flu” probably began with a bird or farm animal

somewhere in the Midwest. It appears that a mild flu virus

was active in the U.S. in the first half of 1918 and that it

spread to Europe with the American troops who were being

sent to fight in World War I. In the summer of 1918, there did

not seem to be much flu in the U.S., but it spread quickly and

became much more virulent in Europe. The virus was so deadly

in Spain that it became known as the “Spanish Flu” – certainly

a misnomer.

Norman Nicholson,

Spanish Flu victim

The flu began to spread out of control all over Europe. The new, more dangerous

“Spanish Flu,” when it returned to the U.S. with American troops beginning in August,

hit both American troops and civilians as a much more virulent and deadly virus.

Beginning in September 1918, thousands of troops began to come down with this

much more devastating version of the virus.

By September 28, 1918, when a “Liberty Loan” parade held in Philadelphia is now

known to have spread infection widely, the Camden area had already become a hotbed

of the virus. According to the Philadelphia Inquirer, three days before the Philadelphia

parade, Haddonfield already had “more than 40 cases” of the flu in town.

There was no real medical treatment for the Spanish flu, so socially isolating oneself

and basic medical support for those affected was about all that could be done.

On October 3, 1918, the Haddon Gazette reported that Haddonfield public schools

and Haddonfield Friends School were closed for “at least ten days,” and the Board of

Commissioners adopted a resolution prohibiting “all indoor public gatherings which

would include lodges, societies, churches, moving picture theatre, library, etc. Similar

precautions have been taken at many other places in Penna. and N.J.” The same article

noted, “All the local physicians are working practically day and night and the matter

has taken a very serious aspect within a few days.”

By October 10, the Gazette reported that there had been six deaths in Haddonfield

so far. Interestingly, most were younger people: Margaret A. Bossert, who died a week

after her husband Benjamin E. Bossert, both in their 30s; Charles A. Seals, ... [page 2]
