Choosing the Best Kitchen Designer
Renovating a kitchen is a challenging prospect. There are so many things to consider that it is easy for the
average homeowner to become overwhelmed. Because of this, and because mistakes in design can be costly,
many homeowners decide to consult with a professional kitchen designer when remodeling. But how do you
choose the right designer for your kitchen project?
First of all, you should consider the professional credentials of any designer you are thinking of using. One
certification is the National Council for Interior Design Qualification (NCIDQ), which makes sure that those with
its credentials are competent in building codes, construction standards, and professional practices, among other
things. Another source of certification is the National Kitchen and Bath Association (NKBA). Designers with NKBA
credentials have studied the construction, electrical, and plumbing issues that are particular to kitchens and
baths. Certification does not always guarantee quality work, but it at least ensures a certain level of competency.
A great way to find a kitchen designer is to find one whose work you like. If you really love a friend or family
member’s kitchen, ask them who designed it. If you are already speaking with a designer, ask to see examples of
their work or if they have any references. Seeing the work of a designer in person will give you an idea of how
they solve design problems, in addition to showing you their style. Speaking with previous clients, especially
ones you know personally, can also tell you if the designer was easy to work with. You will want to find out if they
met deadlines and whether the client was satisfied with the process and the final design.
If you don’t know anyone with a kitchen you love, there are some resources available for you. You can contact
the American Society of Interior Designers to find design professionals near you. You can also use the NKBA’s
locator service to find a kitchen designer. Once you’ve found a few prospective designers, you should ask for
references and to see examples of their previous work.
Personality is also something to consider when selecting a kitchen designer. They may have done excellent work,
to deadline and under budget, but if you don’t get along with them then they probably aren’t the best designer
for you. You need a designer you can work with, who will listen to your concerns and use your design
preferences to guide their work. If you feel a designer isn’t listening to you, or if they denigrate your style
preferences for reasons unrelated to feasibility, then you should move on to another candidate. You should not
spend large sums of money just to have to work with someone you can’t get along with.
Choosing a designer can be tricky, and making the wrong choice could end up costing you money. Be sure to take
your time and find the right one for your needs.
