ALOO PARATHA
Ingredients:
2 Medium Potatoes, 1 Cup Mashed Potatoes
1/4 TSP Ajwain/Carom Seeds
1 Green Chili, finely chopped
2 TBS finely chopped Cilantro
1/4 TSP Cumin Powder
1/4 TSP Garam Masala
1/4 TSP Amchur
1/8 TSP Red Chili Powder, or adjust to taste
3/4 TSP Salt, or adjust to taste
3-4 TSP oil, to cook the Paratha
Dough
1.5 cups Atta |
1 TSP Vegetable Oil
1/4 TSP Salt
Water, to knead the dough
Mash the Potatoes
Cut the
Cilantro
(We used
Coriander)
& Green
Chillies
Method:
Make the dough.
In a bowl mix together Atta, oil and salt. Add water little by little
and mix.
Knead to form smooth and soft dough. Cover and let the dough
rest for 15-20 minutes.
Divide the dough into 4-6 equal parts.
Make the filling
To make the filling, mash the boiled potatoes and transfer to a
bowl.
Add Chopped Cilantro, Salt, Ajwain, Chopped Green Chili, Cumin
Powder, Chaat Masala, Garam Masala powder, Amchur and Red
Chili Powder.
Mix till everything is well combined. The stuffing is now ready.
Make the paratha
Take one of the dough balls and using your rolling pin roll it into a
circle. Apply little oil (optional) all over the rolled dough.
Place 2-3 tablespoons of stuffing in the center. Don't overfill else
it will be difficult to roll.
Bring all the edges together and pinch to seal the edges
Flatten the dough ball using your hands.
Now using your rolling pin, roll the dough to a circle of 7-8 inch
diameter. The trick here is to apply equal pressure while rolling. If
you do that, your Paratha will turn round automatically
Transfer the rolled Paratha onto the hot tawa.
Cook the side for a minute or two and then flip over. Apply oil
[around 1/4 teaspoon] on the half-cooked side and flip again
Now apply oil on the other side as well. Press with a spatula
and cook the Paratha till both sides have golden brown spots on
them.
Repeat with the remaining dough balls.
Serve Aloo paratha hot with Achaar and a cup of chai!
And your Aloo Paratha is ready!
IN THE SPOTLIGHT
WAKEUP & MAKEUP
IN CONVERSATION WITH AMINA Z
08 PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE 2020

What does beauty mean to you?
Beauty means feeling comfortable in your own skin and feeling
good about yourself, whether it is because of make-up or nice
clothes or exercising, it is having confidence in yourself.
Have you been inclined towards make-up since a young age or
did you recognise your passion later on in life?
Almost every woman loves make up but I never thought of
becoming a make-up artist, I recognised my passion in my early
20’s.
How do you stay abreast of the latest beauty trends?
Keeping up with all the trends can feel overwhelming at times;
you need to know what’s happening not only for you, but also for
your potential customers. They trust you to be informed and to
know what is happening in the Beauty and Fashion world. So I
do a lot of research online regarding the current and upcoming
beauty trends and read a lot of print magazines daily so I stay
ahead of the trends.
You have an incredible career – what have been your highlights?
Highlights of my career are that I started from scratch and I
keep on educating to update myself on latest techniques in this
field, I was able to expand and make a salon of my dream. I
am always consistently working on giving good service to my
clients.
What has been the biggest challenge of your career?
Each day comes with its own challenges and problems but
patience and dedication towards my work is what always gets
me through. During my career I have always tried to strike a
balance between what the client wants and what vision I have
for them which has always worked for me.
How would you describe your signature look and what is
it about your style that sets you apart from other make-up
artists?
My make-up style is soft, subtle and dewy. I don’t believe in
over doing it. The best part about Amina Z salon is that we don’t
impose rather we improvise make-up and hair according to your
skin type or preferences but there is one thing for sure.
Your secret to successfully running multiple branches of your
salon while raising your kids?
It's never easy being a mom trying to juggle a full-time business
with a family life. The key is to focus on a plan, get organized,
and find the right balance between profession and parenthood. I
am blessed with a very supportive family which makes running
my salons a lot easier.
Describe a day in your life.
My day starts at 9/30 with a good breakfast, reach the salon
between 10/30 to 11. Check everything at the salon, have a brief
meeting with my team. Then generally talk to my clients, check
if the services are done properly, pick up my son from school at
2/40 take him home, after lunch I come back to the salon in the
evening and then I am there till it closes at 8pm
How does it feel to have your daughter choose the same career
as you?
I am very happy and relieved that my daughter has recently joined
me. She has done her bachelor’s degree in math, statistics and
computer sciences from university of Toronto. Then she did a
year’s course from Aveda institute Toronto in hair and salon management,
Aveda is considered to be one of the best there.
Your advice to aspiring young girls who want to be just like you.
We all know practice makes perfect, and make-up artistry is no
exception. Whether it's trying out different looks on yourself or your
friends, the more you do it, the better you will be. Also being determined
and focused is imperative to succeeding. Never lose hope
and learn to take criticism positively and in a few short years things
will work out even better than expected.
EFFECTIVE
HOME
REMEDIES
FOR DRY
SKIN
have dry skin and need
some ways to moisturize it
while you’re in quarantine
mode? follow along as
we share some natural
remedies with you to soothe
and hydrate your dry skin,
making you feel a hundred
times fresher. all you need?
some simple ingredients &
to stay home!
1. Whip up an Olive Oil cleanser to soothe Dry Skin
A great natural oil to use is olive oil, which works as
a natural cleanser and moisturizer. You just need to
rub the oil into your skin and drape a warm, damp
cloth over your face until it cools, then wipe away
any excess oil. Olive oil acts as a great cleanser as
it won't strip your skin’s natural oils, but it will clean
your skin.
2. Make a Rich, Creamy Avocado Mask At Home
Creating a homemade mask of avocado is another
natural way to soothe dry skin. Puree half an
avocado and mix it with a teaspoon of olive oil; you
10 PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE 2020

can also add a tablespoon (tbsp) of
honey for very dry skin. Apply the
mask to your face, leave it on for 15 to
20 minutes, and then wash it off. Your
skin will be left feeling moisturized.
3. Make a Natural Olive Oil and Sugar
Scrub
Create a naturally moisturizing
exfoliating scrub using a combination
of olive oil and sugar. Combine ½
cup of sugar with 2 tbsp of olive oil.
You can even add an essential oil like
lavender, to add a natural fragrance
and promote relaxation. Gently rub the
scrub into your skin, and then wash it
off. Then, use a soothing moisturizer to
lock in the benefits of freshly exfoliated
skin.
4. Create an Oatmeal Soak to calm
your skin
Adding a cup of oatmeal to a warm
bath can naturally rehydrate dry skin.
The oat product itself is soothing, and
it helps your skin retain moisture from
the bath water.
5. Exfoliate your face with a
Homemade Oatmeal Honey Mask
Oatmeal also makes for a great
exfoliator or mask. Mix 2 tbsp of oats
with a tablespoon of honey and a dash
of water. Rub the mixture onto your
skin. You can use it just to exfoliate
and wash it off right away, or leave it
on for 15 to 20 minutes as a soothing,
hydrating mask.
12 PAPERAZZI MAGAZINE 2020

Did you stumble upon your career or was it something
that you always wanted?
I fortunately and luckily stumbled upon my career.
When I enrolled in my undergrad at LUMS, I intended to
pursue a career in Economics but, in my freshmen year
,an internship in an education organisation , helped me
realise my true passion- Education and Training.
Being brought up in a traditional, mechanical education
system where beating your child is the way to
successful education, experiencing a system based
on empathy and a two-way learning process, sparked
my interest for this field and since then, Education has
become my passion.
What was your "aha!" moment?
This was is hard to choose but if
I really have to pick; I once taught
Public speaking in a government
school of Lahore. During that
month-long camp, there was a girl
who never spoke and always kept
to herself. However, by fostering
empathy in my classroom culture,
I was able to connect with her
and towards the end of the camp,
she gave a speech in front of a
crowd of 400 people in Alhamra.
The moment I saw her on stage,
fiercely expressing her ideas, I
realised how academic achievement
and relationship building are
interdependent.
Did you ever consider or
experience a career change?
Never. I am fully in love with my
work and still in awe of the impact
it creates.
" TO ME, A
BOSS LADY IS
SOMEONE WHO
TAKES FAILURE
AND MISTAKES
AS AN
OPPORTUNITY
TO GROW AND
IS EMPATHETIC
AND KIND
TOWARDS
EVERYONE."
When was the time you felt completely
discouraged and how did you push through
it?
Being a “high-achiever” with stellar grades throughput
her life, I stepped in to LUMS with the same aim of acing
my grades. To my surprise, in the very first semester,
I ended up being on probation and a warning letter
was delivered to my house. This was one of the lowest
moments of my life as I had never experienced “failure”
before and had no idea how to deal with it. I lost all
my interest in studies and my grades tanked further.
It was during this time, I volunteered at an education
organisation and the experience transformed my views
on education and motivated me to look at my studies
from a new perspective. From thereon, I stopped
running after grades an only opted for subjects to
maximise my learning and exposure. This new lens of
not viewing success in terms of grades only allowed me
to grow and perform better.
What are the top 3 things you cherish in your life?
My pet cat, Oro, My support system and partnership
Dancing
What is the #1 thing that is yet to be ticked off your
bucket list?
Have my own space. The concept of “gear” is something
I haven’t truly experienced and having my own safe
space is something I really want.
What does nobody tell you about
being the boss?
I honestly don’t consider myself any
one’s boss. It is ALWAYS a team’s
effort.
Complete this sentence, ‘To me a
#BossLady is…’
To me, a boss lady is someone who
takes failure and mistakes as an
opportunity to grow and is empathetic
and kind towards everyone.
Describe a day in your life..
My days are long and exhausting;
it starts off at 6:30am and at 8am,
I hit my work place. Till 4pm, I do
everything that I love i.e. design
new programs, connect and engage
with amazing human beings and
get inspired. Then I do my ultimate
favourite in the world- dancing! I run
evening dance fitness classes at Aimfit.
Amidst these two jobs, I play with my cat, spend time
with friends and families and workout!
What did you learn from your biggest failure?
Failure is critical for growth.
What advice would you give to young girls who look
upto you and have goals and dreams like you?
Please invest in yourself; step out of your comfort zones
and do something for yourself to be the best version of
yourself! do what you love always!
Positivity is
the key to
happiness!
sara shahid tells us how to stay
positive during these tough times!
1. I think the very first thing
would be to keep yourself
grounded. To live in the moment.
A day at a time. Thinking too
much causes anxiety and
worry which is unnecessary as
nothing is truly in our control.
We have to live in the now.
Remain mindful and just live the
moment.
2. Prayer always works for me.
I believe that our faith needs to
be stronger than our fear. It has
been one of the greatest anchor
through this time .So whatever
way you choose to calm your
heart, mind and soul you must
do it!
3. Spending time with my
children. We don’t get this kind
of time anymore. Life keeps us
so preoccupied with so many
non essential things its the best
down time. Reach out to all the
ones you love. Time is no excuse
these days ! We all have plenty
of it. So reach out , check on the
ones you love.
4. Giving is therapeutic for me.
I am trying to help people in
need in whichever way possible.
Helping others at this time gives
you a sense of purpose. So give
of your time, money and self !! It
does wonders for your soul.
5. Exercise is essential!! You will
be amazed at the energy and
joy it can give you. You pick any
one form of exercise and do it !!
It keeps you calm, happier and
certainly healthier.
6. We have time to think. Use
this time to reflect. For once
we can unclutter our minds. A
complete detox from the world
and its complexities. Maybe
when this is over you will make
changes within yourself and your
surroundings. We actually have
a clearer vision of life and our
priorities.
7. Follow your passion. For
me its design. I sit in my home
studio and get inspired by
moments, nature , music and life
in general these days. Pick what
you have always wanted to do
and run with it ! Fearlessly !!
8. Just be! These are
extraordinary circumstances. We
had never imagined these days
would come. So getting through
each day with your health, mind
and body intact is a victory! So
just be and applaud yourself for
it. You are doing great!
