Naturalized prairie landscape
Benefits of Native Landscaping
In addition to making up healthy, diverse
ecosystems, native plants can be used to
improve water quality and prevent erosion.
The root systems of native plants can be quite
extensive and work well for filtering water
through soil and holding soil in place. For
that reason native plants are great for home
landscapes, shorelines, rain gardens and more.
Prairie plants have been used to create green
roofs to dramatically lessen air conditioning
requirements. In addition, these plantings
provide much-needed urban habitat for bees,
butterflies, and songbirds.
PRI customers - residential, corporate,
and public sector - have found that restoring
native plant communities provides lasting
benefits, and perhaps most significantly,
allows property owners the opportunity to
develop and express their own land ethic.
The end result is a diverse, stable, energy
efficient landscape that will enrich and
enlighten you every day.
Ecological Soundness – Native landscapes make optimum use of existing water and soil properties, even
further enhancing those resources in some cases. Soils are rehabilitated, water is retained and quality wildlife
habitat is provided.
Beauty – Native landscapes provide ever-changing
environments of color, light, texture, sound and
motion. They provide the opportunity to become
more aware of the changing seasons and to connect
with the cycles of nature.
Cost Savings – Native plant communities generally
cost less than a turf-based landscape to install and
less again to maintain. Although it may be a few
years before a natural landscape is fully established,
once mature it will last for generations with
relatively few inputs.
Projects that Make a Difference
Environmental Benefits – Native vegetation ”locksup”
carbon, which helps combat global warming. If
just ten percent of today’s mowed turf was replaced
Feeding frenzy
with native plants, the reduced mowing alone could
save millions of gallons of gas annually and tons of carbon would be captured and stored underground in
massive root systems. Add to that the reduction in applications of chemical fertilizer, pesticides and herbicides
and the result is even greater. Consider the lessened need for lawn watering and add another plus on the side
of going green with native plant communities. Also, diverse prairie vegetation is strongly being considered as
the next “biofuel” source for producing electricity and ethanol.
