6 ProDucts Seed and plants are the basic building blocks of every restoration. In most cases, it would not be possible to achieve success without them. They should be thoughtfully matched to each project site for both species suitability and genetic origin. It is this planning that is highly important to the final integrity and success of a project. All PRI materials originate from three basic areas. At our Princeton farm, in central Minnesota, we produce plants and seeds with genetic origins from the centrally located Anoka Sand Plain and from a beautiful wooded remnant located just north of the sand plain. We use these prairie, wetland, and woodland materials on projects throughout the central and southern parts of Minnesota as well as adjacent parts of Wisconsin and South Dakota. In northwest Minnesota we produce prairie and wetland seed at our Bluestem farm which is located on the eastern edge of the Red River <strong>Prairie</strong> sod flats Valley. Fortunately, this property includes many acres of high quality remnant prairie which have served as the seed source for almost all of our production fields at this farm. The seed produced at this great site is used for projects in northwestern Minnesota and adjoining North Dakota. We do not produce seedling plants at this site. Finally, at Boreal Natives, located in northeast Minnesota, our production takes place about 12 miles west of Duluth and utilizes Seeding plant production seed that was collected from that immediate area. This site produces northern (boreal) plants and some volume of seed for selected northern species. It also is responsible for nearly all of our tree and shrub production. These materials are used throughout northern Minnesota and Wisconsin. All About Our Seed At PRI we grow, clean and market a wide variety of grass and wildflower seed. As previously stated, all of these materials are of local origin, meaning that the original collection was made either on or in close proximity to one of our three production centers. This is a challenging process that has taken several decades but we believe it is critically important because it maintains the local characteristics of each species and results in plants that are better adapted to projects in these areas. The seed is sold as either pure live seed (PLS) or as bulk seed. In either case, the seed has been tested for purity and germination so you know what value it really has. We provide a selection of seed mixes, each made to suit different site conditions or planting objectives. Grass mixes are often matched with the corresponding flower mixes but not always. Customized seed mixes are possible and are often a good idea. Project goals, budget, site conditions and project location are all important factors in determining the mix components. Lupine seed production plot Trees and Shrubs Plants There are more than 200 native tree and shrub species in Minnesota. All of these have a place in restoration and many are also excellent plants for designed landscapes. Generally, truly native woody plants of local origin are difficult to find in the traditional marketplace. At PRI we have been producing native woodies for over 20 years. This effort has been expanded during the last five years so that we can now offer more species and in more sizes. Most of these have been propagated from our own locally collected seed and then grown in containers to produce the final product. Woodland plants - Wild ginger (Asarum canadense) PRI produces all plants from seed. In order to preserve genetic diversity we do not use asexual methods of propagation. We do not dig from the wild, since digging can deplete local plant populations. We grow our plants in a custom soil medium, making our plants more easily able to transition to the soil where they will eventually be planted. We also use natural fertilizers in our production. We think this is extremely important to the integrity of your project. Seedling plants are used on most projects to increase diversity and add species not otherwise available as seed. This very important step should be considered necessary for smaller wetland and prairie projects and is highly desirable for all larger projects. For woodland projects it is the primary option available. Sod flats are another product of PRI. Think of these as instant prairie, wetland, shoreline or woodland. They are immediate, and because they cover the ground, weed development is very limited. They are approximately two square feet each and are loaded with a large mix of plants, making them a great value. Scandia and Princeton offer plants, seeds, shrubs, trees and many cool environmental gifts. Boreal Natives offers northern plants, seeds, shrubs and trees, but no gifts.
