The Haddonfield Farmers Market
will open in the Archer Law
parking lot on Sat May 23.
Order-ahead, drive-through.
Where have you been buying
your fruits and vegetables lately,
and how satisfactory has it been?
Cherry Hill’s SHEN
SHELLENBERGER
was thrilled when she
discovered that one of
her favorite eateries
was selling groceries
online. “I’ve been
getting incredible
produce from the
Westmont Diner,” she
says. “It’s been easy
and efficient ... and
restaurant-quality.”
KIRK STUART of
Haddonfield has
stuck with Wegmans.
“But we’re buying
more bagged salads
than we used to,” he
says. “And washing
everything else well,
before we bring it
into the house.”
ROBIN MORROW,
who owns Play@
Art in Haddonfield,
supports hometown
businesses. “So I’ve
been shopping
almost exclusively at
the Acme.” She says
she’s “very thankful”
for the convenience.
PRUDY LA MANTIA
of Bellmawr is a
regular at Verichio’s,
at the Brooklawn
Circle. “It’s as big as
a supermarket, so
customers are still
able to walk in and
select their own fruits
and vegetables.”
NEWTON JONES
has been ordering
and picking up from
J. Ambrogi Foods in
Thorofare. “It’s been
very efficient, and
they have a terrific
selection,” he says. A
Mickleton resident,
Newton will likely
switch to the local
farmers market soon.
“I like to shop locally,”
he says.
BOB MIRABELLO,
of Haddonfield,
and his wife shop
at Springdale Farm
Market year-round.
“They’ve made some
adjustments for
social distancing,”
says Bob, “but apart
from that nothing
much has changed.
And the quality is
consistently good.”

Borough News
Tax deadline
now June 1
During their meeting
on Tue May 12, the
Borough commissioners
changed the date for
payment of property
taxes without penalty
from May 31 (a Sunday)
to Mon Jun 1.
The regular due date
for second quarter tax
payments was May 1.
The commissioners had
extended the usual grace
period to the end of the
month, at 0% interest,
provided payment was
received on or before
May 31, 2020. That date
is now Jun 1.
The commissioners’
action recognizes the
financial difficulties
some residents are
experiencing, because of
the COVID-19 pandemic.
Property taxes that
are not paid by Jun 1,
2020 will be subject to
interest at the rate of 8%
per annum up to $1,500
and 18% per annum
over $1,500, calculated
from the due date (May
1) until the date the
payment is actually
received.
Although the Borough
Hall is closed to the
general public, payments
can still be made “in
person” by placing them
in the black mailbox in
front of the building.
Place the tax bill and
check in an envelope
marked “Tax Office.” The
box is emptied daily.
Paying by mail? The
address is 242 Kings
Highway E, Haddonfield
NJ 08033.

School’s out! See you in September
Students in New Jersey will not return to their brick-and-mortar schools any
time soon. Governor Phil Murphy recently ordered all schools in to remain
closed for the remainder of the school year.
Public schools will continue to provide remote learning for students to allow
districts to meet the state-required minimum of 180 instruction days.
In a statement released in conjunction with his order, Gov. Murphy said,
“This is a difficult decision and I know that many students, parents, and staff
would like to be able to return to school. However, I have been unwavering on
the message that we need to make decisions based on science, not emotion.
And while New Jersey is making great strides in mitigating the spread of COVID-
19, science tells us that at this point, we can’t safely re-open our schools.”

July 4 events canceled
In normal times, Haddonfield observes the
anniversary of the nation’s independence with a
celebration downtown and fireworks on July 3 and a
parade on July 4.
But these are not normal times.
The Haddonfield Celebrations Association, the
not-for-profit community group that plans and
raises funds for these and several other annual
events, has decided that a public celebration of
America’s independence will not be practical in
2020.
“We’re disappointed, of course,” said Ken
Tomlinson, the Association’s president, “but we
decided it was best to be safe rather than sorry.”
Arrangement for the fireworks and parade are
typically made several months in advance.
“Each year, we pay deposits to vendors and bands,”
Tomlinson said, “but it didn’t make sense to do that
this year, since there are many unknowns, and many
decisions are out of our hands.”
Tomlinson said the Celebrations Association
recognized that its decision will disappoint not just
residents, but many others from throughout the
region.
“Hundreds of out-of-town folks come to Haddonfield
for our spectacular fireworks and one of the best
parades in the Delaware Valley,” he said. “We will
look forward to welcoming them back in 2021.”

Schools to receive COVID funds
Schools in Haddonfield have been designated to receive $111,729 in
Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief funds, through the federal
government’s CARES Act.
The funds are intended to help offset expenses incurred in connection with
the coronavirus pandemic.
Although schools in New Jersey have been closed since mid-March, public
and private schools have been hit with unexpected expenses, including
increased cleaning costs before the closures. Some districts and schools also
purchased laptops or WiFi access for students to help with the shift to remote
learning.
Locally, the public schools will receive $95,193. The other $16,536 earmarked
for Haddonfield will be divided between Haddonfield Friends School and Christ
the King Regional School.

When you shop online, in big-box stores, or dine at
out-of-town restaurants, your money leaves Haddonfield
immediately, and doesn’t come back.
But when you shop in town, the businesses you patronize
spend some of that money locally. They also support
community, sports, and school organizations and activities.

Book Club to discuss ‘The Radium Girls’
On Mon May 18 at 7pm, the Public Library and the Historical Society will
join virtually for a discussion of The Radium Girls: The Dark Story of America’s
Shining Women by Kate Moore.
The nonfiction book explores the story of women factory-workers in New
Jersey and Illinois who suffered agonizing deaths in the 1920s and 1930s
because they had used radium-infused paint on the job. (The paint made
clock faces glow in the dark.) Sadly, the women were largely blamed for their
subsequent health problems, even after radium was proven to be toxic, but
their struggles helped pave the way for workplace safety measures.

Novel way to
support stores
The spread of the
coronavirus (COVID-
19) is having a
devastating impact on
small businesses in
Haddonfield. Many have
closed temporarily;
others are operating at
greatly reduced levels.
To help keep some
cash flowing, several
business owners have
created “Haddonfield
Here For Good!” It’s a
way for residents and
others to support and
show appreciation for
their favorite businesses.
The concept is simple:
Go online and purchase
a $20 tee-shirt. All shirts
have the “Haddonfield
Here For Good!” graphic
on the back, while each
participating business
has its own logo on the
left chest.
If you can’t decide
which business you want
to support, order the
generic “Haddonfield”
shirt, or make a
donation.
$10 from each sale
goes to the business.
The more shirts sold,
the more money the
business gets. 100%
of proceeds benefit
the small businesses
of Haddonfield and all
monies collected in the
general fund will be
divided equally among
participating businesses.
When Downtown
Haddonfield gets back
to normal and retail
returns, there will be
special events where
everyone will be invited
to wear their Here For
Good shirts.
Shirts can be
purchased online at
HaddonfieldHereForGood
.com. Scan to QR code n.

ORGANIC-BASED TURF PROGRAM
We’ve worked with certified turf and soil specialists to develop
a new turf program that will dramatically REDUCE the output
of synthetic fertilizer and salt-based products that have been
overused in our industry for too long.
We incorporated industry-leading,
organic-based soil treatments
and fertilizers with tried-and-true
products that focus on the soil makeup
of your lawn. With this blend, your lawn
can increase its ability to absorb nutrients,
reducing the need for consistent chemical enhancement.
The best defense against insect damage,
turf disease, and weed population is THICK GRASS. This can
be achieved with the assurance that you’re increasing your curb
appeal while reducing synthetic chemical output.
MOSQUITO CONTROL
Our program reduces the feeding
activity of adult mosquitoes,
prevents larvae from hatching, and
repels ticks from your property.
Other businesses treat twice as often as we do,
but since the focus of our trained technicians is prevention,
we can dramatically reduce the amount of insecticide released
into the environment.

Historical Society invites input
to document the Virus Year
“COVID-19 is history. Let’s record it!”
That’s the thrust of a new initiative the Historical
Society of Haddonfield has launched: a storygathering
project called “Haddonfield Virus Year.”
The Society is inviting its members, and members
of the community generally, to contribute records of
their experiences for posterity.
“The COVID-19 pandemic is affecting all of us,”
says Dana Dorman, the Society’s archivist.
“During this challenging time of school and
business closures, social distancing, or even actual
illness, we at the Historical Society can’t help but
wonder – how will this experience be recorded for
future generations?
“Start writing down your experiences,” Dorman
suggests.
“You can do this in any way that feels right for
you: as a letter, as a diary or an activity log, as
a string of sentences. If you don’t want to write,
document your experiences in whatever other ways
feel right for you: photographs, artwork, audio or
video recordings, etc.”
To learn more – and sign up to participate – scan

HADDONFIELD POST 38
Limited observance of Memorial Day
Memorial Day – the last Monday in May – is when America honors and mourns military
personnel who have died while serving in the United States Armed Forces. Each year,
Post 38 sponsors a ceremony in front of Haddonfield Memorial High School. But not in
2020. Because of the COVID-19 pandemic, this year’s observance has been canceled.
On the evening of Friday, May 22, members of Post 38 will “dress the graves” (place
American flags) of departed service men and women in the Baptist and Methodist
cemeteries in Haddonfield.
On Monday, May 25, a brief ceremony for members of the Post will be held at the
headquarters on Veterans Lane, starting at 9am.
’Tis the season to fly the Flag ... with pride!
Spring is not only the time of year when flowers begin to bloom, it’s also the season
when flags begin to fly. Some homeowners and business owners fly the American flag at
their homes and premises year-round. Many currently are flying it at half-staff, in honor
of those on the front lines who have succumbed to COVID-19. Others hoist it for special
occasions. If you’re one of the latter, the key dates you need to know for 2020 are:
• Memorial Day – Monday, May 25
• Flag Day – Sunday, June 14
• Independence Day – Saturday, July 4
• Patriot Day – Friday, September 11
• National POW/MIA Recognition Day – Friday, September 18
• Veterans Day – Wednesday, November 11
HoW to FLY tHe FLaG
Most people know that the flag should be flown upside-down only to indicate distress.
But many people do not know the rules for correct placement and orientation.
On your house or office building, the flag should be to your right when you stand at
the front door and face away from the building. The same applies on a podium: The flag
should be to the speaker’s right.
When the flag is displayed vertically, it should be hung so the “canton” (the blue part
with the 50 white stars) is to the audience’s left. This applies whether the stripes are
parallel to the ground or perpendicular to the ground.
HoW to DisPose oF FLaGs
Do you have a flag that’s faded, torn, stained and unable to be cleaned, or in some
other way unserviceable? Don’t throw it in the trash – that would be disrespectful. Instead,
stop by the American Legion Post 38 headquarters on Veterans Lane and place your flag
in the metal box outside. Alternatively, drop it at the Fire Station on N. Haddon Avenue.
Haddon Fire Co. No. 1 conducts a dignified and solemn ceremony, in accordance with
American Legion guidelines, during which unserviceable flags are retired and burned.

Name that giraffe!
After a traffic-stopping ride through downtown
Haddonfield early on the morning of Wed May 6, a
1,000-pound, 15-foot tall bronze giraffe was installed
in the Children’s Sculpture Zoo, within Tatem
Memorial Garden, at the corner of Kings Highway
East and Evergreen Avenue.
Now all he needs is a name.
The zoo is a project of Haddonfield Outdoor
Sculpture Trust, a nonprofit that has installed a
number of sculptures throughout the town. The
giraffe was donated by Haddonfield residents Paul
and Paula Szkotak and daughters Alexis, Angelina
and Arabella.
The contest for a name is open to all. While
the Trust welcomes input from all, near and far,
the winning name will be selected from those
submitted by Haddonfield residents and students in
Haddonfield schools.
To suggest a name, enter on the Haddonfield
Outdoor Sculpture Trust’s website, through Sun
May 31 at 12n. Scan the QR code n to connect. The
name of the winner/s will be announced in early
June.
Although the sculpture itself was donated, HOST
is seeking financial support to defray upwards of
$10,000 in “soft” costs (moving, insurance, fencing,
security, for example). Donate on the HOST website.

Caregivers seek volunteers
Interfaith Caregivers was founded on the simple but profound vision of
neighbors helping neighbors. The organization supports senior and disabled
residents of Haddon Heights and Haddonfield, at no charge.
At a time when all New Jerseyans are staying in place, the need for Interfaith
Caregivers’ services is even greater. The organization’s clients still need
assistance with tasks such as obtaining groceries, or medications from the
pharmacy. Interfaith Caregivers has a set of protocols that respect the call for
social distancing while making sure those served have what they need.
Not interested in grocery shopping? Volunteers are also making social calls
to clients to make sure that even though we are socially distancing we are still
maintaining connections with each other.
Residents who are able and interested in helping are encouraged to email
executive director Nancy DeLaura at ndelaura@ifchaddons.org.

HMHS Athletics: #1 in NJ
A CBS-owned website that specializes in coverage
of American high school sports has ranked the
athletics program at Haddonfield Memorial High
School number 1 in New Jersey and number 14 in
the United States.
MaxPreps calculates its rankings by assigning
points for state championships and runner-up
finishes and by factoring in the popularity of each
sport, size of each state, state enrollment divisions,
and the number of schools in each state enrollment
division. Points also are awarded for national
rankings, where available.
This school year, Haddonfield athletes brought
home state championship trophies for
boys’ cross country, girls’ indoor
track, boys’ swimming, and girls’
swimming. They were state
runners-up in girls’ field
hockey and girls’ cross
country.

In case you’ve ever
wondered why there’s a
dot between the words
“Haddonfield” and “Today”
on our nameplate, here’s
the answer:
In 2017, when we changed
the name and format of
“What’s On Haddonfield”
to “Haddonfield Today,” we
envisioned that one day there
would be be a digital version
of our new print publication.
That day has come.

When you shop online, in big-box stores, or dine at
out-of-town restaurants, your money leaves Haddonfield
immediately, and doesn’t come back.
But when you shop in town, the businesses you patronize
spend some of that money locally. They also support
community, sports, and school organizations and activities.
Keep your cash in your community!
