Scholarships and Foundation Grants

Through the generosity of the many friends of Bishop Ryan Catholic

School, several tuition scholarships are awarded to students each year.

The scholarships are awarded in accordance with the wishes of the donor;

some are based on academic achievement, others on interest in particular

subjects or activities, and still others on the parish that a student attends.

ALVIN AND LORRAINE AHMANN MEMORIAL

SCHOLARSHIP. Established by the family, this scholarship

encourages students to attend Bishop Ryan Catholic School

through gifts made in honor of Alvin and Lorraine.

BACKES FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP. Initiated in the memory of Orlin and

Millie Backes, this scholarship honors two life-long supporters of Bishop Ryan

Catholic School.

NEIMAN AND DOROTHY BEHM

MEMORIAL GRANT. This tuition grant was

established by the family of Dorothy and

Neiman Behm to help deserving students and

their families.

JOE AND TOOTIE BOSCH FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP. In honor of two

devoted Bishop Ryan supporters, this scholarship was established to share

the gift of faith and family with elementary students attending Bishop

Ryan Catholic School.

ED BRUNNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. In memory of their

father, the children of Ed Brunner established a scholarship to be

awarded to the most improved wrestler in the wrestling program.

ED AND FERN BRUNNER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. This

scholarship was established in honor of Ed and Fern Brunner to help

deserving students and their families.

SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship was established

by Mr. and Mrs. Brunner to aid students who need

financial assistance to receive a Catholic education.

HENRY AND EILEEN BUSCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.

Established by the Busch family because of their passion for academic

excellence, this scholarship is awarded to a deserving student to help them

excel.

CATHOLIC DAUGHTERS OF THE AMERICAS SCHOLARSHIP. To

encourage students to take advantage of Catholic education, a scholarship

is awarded to two current kindergarten students to help with

tuition for the following year at Bishop Ryan Catholic School.

DuWAYNE AND DONNA CHRISTEN SCHOLARSHIP. The Christens’

belief in the blessings of a Catholic education led to the founding of this

scholarship, awarded to a deserving student from Little Flower parish.

ERIC CLAUSEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship is awarded

to a Bishop Ryan high school student who shows a strong interest in social justice.

COOK FAMILY MEMORIAL GRANT. This memorial grant honors

Harry, Bea, Bob, Patrick, Rose, and Fr. Blaine Cook, who were all

instrumental in the development of Catholic education in Minot.

COUGHLIN FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND. The Coughlin Trust

annually awards a scholarship to the student(s) who maintain the highest

cumulative grade point average in their high school class.

ANDREW CROCKETT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. Established in

memory of Andrew Crockett, a freshman at Bishop Ryan High School

who passed away while participating in track practice in April 2005, the

Crockett family sponsors annual tournaments for boys and girls basketball

teams, and the money raised directly funds scholarships to help eligible

students attend Bishop Ryan High School.

EDGAR AND IRENE DESCHAMP MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. This

scholarship, established in the Deschamps’ memory, is awarded to a

deserving high school student and a deserving elementary student from

St. Leo’s Parish who are attending Bishop Ryan.

REINHARD AND AGNES ECKERT MEMORIAL

SCHOLARSHIPS. Agnes established this fund in

memory of her husband, Reinhard. They were

charter members of both Little Flower and St. John

the Apostle parishes and supporters of Catholic

Education.

GERTRUDE EHR MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIPS FOR BAND AND

CHOIR. This scholarship program was established by the family of Bishop

Ryan benefactor Gertrude Ehr to recognize deserving students in the

band and choir programs.

TERRI FEIST MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. Established

by her family to honor her zest for life and their faith in

God, this award is given to a deserving Bishop Ryan student.

TOM AND GRACE FISHER SCHOLARSHIP.

Grace Fisher established this fund following

the death of her husband, Tom. Both were

graduates of St. Leo’s High School and have

been continuous supporters of Catholic

education in Minot.

RICHARD “BUD” AND VERNA HARMON HERITAGE

SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship was established in 2015 in memory of

Bud Harmon. Bud and Verna sent five children to Bishop Ryan Catholic

School and have had either children or grandchildren attending Bishop

Ryan for over half a century. The Harmon family believes deeply in

Catholic education and wishes to assist generations of young families in

attending Bishop Ryan Catholic School.

KEM HENNESSY MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship is given

in memory of Kem Hennessy, a member of the Bishop Ryan faculty and

coaching staff during the 1990s. The award is given to a student wrestler

active in the science area.

TRISH HOEVEN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.

This scholarship, established by the family, is awarded to a

deserving student of Bishop Ryan Catholic School.

BERTHA HOLBACH MEMORIAL SHOLARSHIP. Bertha Holbach is a

member of a prominent pioneer family of Minot. She taught in the Minot

Public Schools for many years and spent her retirement volunteering with

the Bishop Ryan Foundation, St. Leo’s Parish, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and

Minot State University.

FRANK AND RUTH HOLBACH FAMILY SCHOLARSHIP FUND. This

fund was established by Frank Holbach in honor of his wife, Ruth, and

provides resources that will assist families with limited financial means to

give their children a Catholic education at Bishop Ryan Elementary.

NATHAN KASPER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP.

This memorial scholarship was established by the parents

and friends of Nathan Kasper. The scholarship is awarded to

a fifth grade student attending Bishop Ryan.

MATT AND ISABELL KLEIN SCHOLARSHIP. As parents of Bishop

Ryan alumni, Matt and Isabell have witnessed the impact of Catholic

education in their children’s lives, and their desire is to share that gift of

faith with other families.

SCHOLARSHIP. Betty Lewis established this

scholarship to honor her mother, Mrs. Gloria

F. Knudson. This scholarship assists deserving

students at Bishop Ryan Catholic School.

GRANT. This memorial grant was established to provide

financial assistance to well-deserving students from St. Leo’s

Parish.

DARYL AND LORRY KRAMER MEMORIAL

SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship was established by the

friends and family of Daryl and Lorry to aid deserving

students in obtaining a religious education at Bishop Ryan

Catholic School. Nine Kramer children have graduated from

Bishop Ryan.

BERT LEIDHOLT MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. Bert’s friends and

family established this scholarship to assist deserving students in obtaining

a quality education. Bert was a coach and teacher in the early years of

Bishop Ryan High School.

CONNIE ANN LESTER SCHOLARSHIP. Dan Lester

created this scholarship in honor of his wife, Connie, a

longtime kindergarten teacher and supporter of Catholic

schools in communities where they were stationed. Connie

taught in Minot for 17 years. This scholarship aids families

in sending their children to Bishop Ryan Catholic School.

JON LO MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship was established

by Jon’s parents to honor his memory. Jon was a graduate of the Class of

2002.

GLEN LOVELACE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship is

awarded to a deserving student from the Minot Air Force Base.

COLLEEN McMAHON McCOLLUM MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. This

scholarship is awarded in memory of Colleen McMahon McCollum, Bishop

Ryan High School Class of 1966. It is awarded to a deserving student of

Bishop Ryan Catholic School.

OUR LADY OF GRACE ALTAR SOCIETY SCHOLARSHIP. Current

Bishop Ryan students who belong to Our Lady of Grace parish and are

children or grandchildren of active members of an Altar Society circle are

invited to apply for this scholarship. Its awarding is based on involvement

in church and community, grade point average, teacher recommendation

and essay response.

TONY AND ANN NITSCH MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. In honor of

Mr. and Mrs. Nitsch, this scholarship was established by their family to aid

deserving students with tuition assistance at Bishop Ryan.

MILDRED OLSON REID MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. In memory

of Mrs. Reid, this scholarship was established by the Paulsen family to

recognize a deserving student who participates in Science Olympiad.

THOMAS AND ISAAC RINTOUL MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. In

loving memory of Thomas and Isaac, this scholarship was established to

help a Bishop Ryan family persevere through difficult times with a shared

sense of community and support.

CINDY RUBBELKE MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. Established by

her family and friends to honor Cindy’s life-long commitment to early

childhood education, this scholarship is awarded to an elementary student

in need of financial assistance who wants to attend Bishop Ryan Catholic

School.

LEONA RUBBELKE SCHOLARSHIP TRUST. Established through

a bequest of Ms. Rubbelke, the earnings of this trust are to be used to

provide tuition assistance for deserving students attending Bishop Ryan

Catholic School.

JAMES AND ANNE RYAN MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. Established

by Mr. and Mrs. Ryan, this scholarship grant is to help deserving students

with tuition assistance at Bishop Ryan.

HENRY AND THERESA SCHNEIDER MEMORIAL GRANT. This

memorial grant was established by the family and friends of Henry and

Theresa Schneider to aid deserving students from St. John the Apostle Parish.

FATHER HENRY SCHNEIDER SCHOLARSHIP. In honor of Fr.

Schneider’s 40th Anniversary of Ordination, parishioners from St. John’s

Parish established the Fr. Schneider Scholarship as an ongoing project for

Catholic education at Bishop Ryan Catholic School.

FR. JACOB SCHUMACHER MEMORIAL GRANT. Fr. Schumacher

grew up in southwestern North Dakota and dedicated his life to

parishes and schools in the Diocese of Bismarck. Upon his passing in

2015, his estate established endowment funds for Bishop Ryan Catholic

School and other schools in the diocese to assist students and families

choosing Catholic education.

SAMUEL AND GERTRUDE SHEA

MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. Established by

the children of Samuel and Gertrude Shea,

this scholarship assists families in sending their

children to Bishop Ryan Catholic School.

WALT SKOWRONEK MEMORIAL GRANT. This memorial grant was

established by the family and friends of Walt Skowronek to aid a deserving

student from Little Flower Parish.

AGNES SLATER MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. In honor of the Slater

family’s long association with Bishop Ryan, Mrs. Slater established this

fund to assist new middle school and high school students with tuition.

PAUL AND MARGARET STREIFEL FAMILY

MEMORIAL. The family of Paul and Margaret Streifel

continue to support Bishop Ryan Catholic School through

their memorial gifts.

JENNIFER VREELAND ART SCHOLARSHIP. Established in 2017 by

Bishop Ryan alumna Jennifer Vreeland McDermott, this scholarship is

awarded to a graduating Bishop Ryan senior who has been active in the art

department and declares an art major in college.

AMBROSE WALD MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. Because Catholic

education was so important to Ambrose Wald, father of ten, his family

established a memorial scholarship fund in his honor.

FATHER KENNETH WALD AND FRIENDS SCHOLARSHIP. A

staunch supporter of Bishop Ryan Catholic School, Fr. Wald personally

established this scholarship to offer tuition assistance to incoming sixth

graders who are new to Bishop Ryan. After Fr. Wald passed away in 2015,

the scholarship fund was endowed through a gift from his estate and

memorial gifts in his honor, ensuring the tradition of his legacy.

JAMES AND MAGDALENE WALSH MEMORIAL

SCHOLARSHIP. This scholarship was established to benefit

students who need financial assistance in receiving a Catholic

education.

FATHER CHRIS WALTER HERITAGE FUND SCHOLARSHIP. This

scholarship was established in 2008 in recognition of the significant

contributions of Fr. Chris Walter, a longtime Pastor at St. Leo’s, to

Catholic school education in Minot. He has made Catholic school

education available to many generations of our community. This

scholarship is awarded to a student who best represents Fr. Walter’s

passion for excellence.

BRENT WESTON MEMORIAL SCHOLARSHIP. The Brent Weston

Memorial Scholarship is awarded to two students selected by Our Lady of

Grace Catholic Church.

PAUL AND KAY WHERLEY MEMORIAL

SCHOLARSHIP. Through Paul’s generous donations in

memory of his wife, Kay, a fund was started to sponsor

scholarships for deserving math and science students at

Bishop Ryan Catholic School. Paul and Kay owned Central

Office Supply in Minot and were active in St. Leo’s Parish.

RAYMOND JOHNATHON “MOX” YEAGER MEMORIAL

SCHOLARSHIP. In honor of Mox, a 2011 Bishop Ryan graduate, this

scholarship was established to reward a deserving freshman, sophomore

or junior for academic achievement.

ROSAMUND ZLEVOR MEMORIAL TRUST. Since 1962, an annual

donation has been made to the Work Study program from the Zlevor

Trust, a request of Rosamund Zlevor, a longtime Minot resident and

member of St. Leo’s parish.
