How to

Replace Your

Staircase

Railing

If you have staircase railings in your

home, odds are that they are one of the

2 popular types. In one type, the rail is

affixed to the wall with brackets & can

be replaced easily with a few basic tools.

The other common type of staircase

railing has newel posts and horizontal

bar or iron balusters and may need

• Put the old rail next to the new one if you need to drill

spindle holes. Stretch a tape measure out along the old

rail and measure the location of each hole down the entire

Iron Baluster- or Spindle-Type Railing:

• Find the points where the stair railing is affixed to the

newel posts & balusters or Spindles by screw fasteners.

• Unthread any screw fasteners that lock the top of the

spindles to the base of the rail.

• Move to the posts that are secured to the rail. Remove

the screw fasteners with a screwdriver or screw gun

equipped with the right-size bit. Use a reciprocating saw

to cut the area between the wood post and the rail.

• Pull the rail up from the balusters if they are housed

inside the drilled holes at the bottom.

• Compare the old stair rail to the new one to

make sure that they are the same length and that

the hole, if balusters or spindles are present to

match. Place the new rail between the stair

railing just above the balusters.

• Check that the spindles are plumb using a level

before securing the end of the rail to the post.

Wallrail Bracket Type Railing:

• Make use of a screwdriver to remove the

fasteners that secure the rail to the wall

brackets: Some brackets wrap entirely around

the rail or are welded into place.

• Pull the rail off of the brackets & set it next to

the replacement. Check that they are the same

length.

• Put the new rail on top of the wall brackets.

Re-thread a screw through each wall rail bracket

slot & into the rail. Continue placing screws

until you fill all of the bracket slots and the rail

is secure.
