Fishing in Grand Lakes ponds is strictly Catch and Release. The use of
barbless hooks is encouraged because the use of these hooks minimizes
harm to the fish. There are a lot of turtles in our ponds and it’s not unusual
for a turtle to ‘take the bait.’ Here again, the use of barbless hooks makes
it much easier to release the turtle back into the water without damage.
Barbless hooks (bare and lures) are not typically available off the shelf
at local Katy and Houston fishing supply shops such as Bass Pro Shop,
Academy, Dicks, David’s Tackle Box (Rosenberg) or Fishing Tackle Unlimited.
The demand for them is just not high enough to warrant shelf space.
Both bare barbless hooks and a wide selection of barbless lures are available
online from Bass Pro Shop, Amazon and Walmart. Barbless flies are also
available online. A great site for barbless flies is bigyflyco.com. Online prices
for bare barbless hooks, barbless lures and barbless flies are reasonable. As
an alternative to purchasing barbless hooks, a barbed hook (whether
bare, lure or fly) can be changed to barbless. The correct way to change a
barbed hook into a barbless hook is illustrated in the photo. This process
is not reversible, so the hook will be forever barbless.
Grand Lakes fishermen should either take a number of barbed hooks,
lures and flies from their collection, squeeze the barbs (see below) and
then set them aside in their tackle or go online and purchase barbless
hooks they can use in the Grand Lakes ponds. Using barbless will help
ensure a healthy fish population for all to enjoy. Article written by Dirk
Smit, a Grand Lakes Resident.
IS DOG WASTE A
BIOHAZARD? YOU BET!
Ignorance is bliss. I’m going to go out on
a limb here and assume that most dog
owners (or people in general) mainly regard
dog poop - especially that which has not
been properly picked up and disposed of -
as more of a nuisance and blight than of the
actual danger and health hazard it really is.
The fact is dog poop is a biohazard.
The dangerous “doo doo” facts:
1. Nearly two decades ago, the
Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
classified pet waste as a dangerous
pollutant in the same category as toxic
chemicals and oil. Did you know that one
gram of dog poop can contain 23 million
fecal coliform bacteria, which are known to cause cramps, diarrhea, intestinal illness
and serious kidney disorders in humans? Probably not. The EPA even estimates
that two or three days’ worth of waste from a population of about 100 dogs would
contribute enough bacteria to temporarily close a bay and all watershed areas
within 20 miles of it to swimming and shell fishing. Additionally, the EPA explains
that the decay of your pet’s waste actually creates nutrients for weeds and algae
that grow in the waterways. As these organisms thrive on your dog’s waste, they
overtake the water by limiting the amount of light that can penetrate the water’s
surface. As a result, oxygen levels in the water decrease and the fish and seafood we
eat can be asphyxiated. This, in turn, eventually leads to a host of other bacterialrelated
problems in our waters.
2. Dog poop is NOT good fertilizer. It’s toxic to your lawn and other organic matter
in your yard. The high nutrient (nitrogen) concentration in dog poop will burn and
discolor the grass, creating “hot spots.” This is mainly due to dogs’ high protein diets.
3. Poop left un-scooped in your yard is carried by surface runoff (also known as
overland flow) which is the flow of water that occurs when excess storm water,
meltwater or other sources flows over the earth’s surface. It is the primary agent
in soil erosion by water and is washed into storm drains, ending up in faraway
streams, rivers and groundwater.
4. The U.S. Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) confirms pet waste
can spread parasites including hookworms, ringworms, tapeworms, Salmonella
and several other dangerous viruses and bacteria. When infected dog poop comes
into contact with your lawn, the poop will eventually “disappear,” but the parasite
eggs can linger for years. When humans or animals come into contact with that soil
through everyday activities like walking barefoot, playing or gardening, they risk
infection from those eggs - even years after the poop is gone. Parents, think of your
little ones playing in the yard!
5. Dog poop often contains roundworm larvae, which may cause blindness. If a
human ingests a roundworm larva, it can migrate through the body causing
disease to the brain, lungs, kidneys, liver, heart and/or eyes. So, when people
(especially children) touch soil, dog toys or anything that has been in contact with
dog feces and then touch their mouths, they can potentially become infected.
Another reason why hand-washing is so important, especially concerning children
and handling dog waste.
What You Can Do: EPA says, “The reluctance of many residents to handle dog waste
is the biggest limitation to controlling pet waste.” So, in essence, the cycle begins and
ends with you and me - US. The findings and surveys conducted by the EPA and CDC
date back to the 90s. It’s my opinion that most pet owners have evolved to become
more responsible and diligent about confronting the unwanted, burdensome side
of pet ownership. However, unfortunately, there still are those who have not quite
jumped on the “responsible pet-owner bandwagon” yet, so to speak. Thus the reason
this information needs to be disseminated. Source: https://getbombsaway.com/dogpoop-is-a-biohazard/
National Selfie Day
Cell phones and social media have transformed our lives. These
technologies have enabled us to communicate with each other in a
way that just wasn’t possible before their invention. And one form
communication or self-expression depending on how it’s used, it the selfie
- the act of taking a picture of yourself with a cell phone or webcam and
posting it to social media. It’s an act that has taken the world by storm,
which is probably why there’s now a holiday to celebrate it called National
Selfie Day. A day, which has been celebrated annually since 2014 on June
21 st . So why not grab your cell phone, snap a picture of yourself and post
it on the Internet on this glorious holiday? After all, millions of people all
over the world are probably doing that very act anyway - holiday or not.
The History of the Selfie: While people have been taking pictures of
themselves for quite some time, most experts agree that the selfie first
evolved into its modern version when people started taking pictures
of themselves to post on MySpace between 2003 and 2005. However,
it was a drunk Australian on Flickr in 2004 who coined the term “selfie”
to describe the act of taking a picture of yourself and posting it to social
media. Then as the years passed and cell phone technology, as well as the
independent technologies of the various social media outlets improved,
selfies themselves began to improve. And as they improved, they
increased in popularity. In 2013, the selfie would then hit the mainstream
when the Oxford Dictionary added the term “selfie.”
The History of National Selfie Day: The first time National Selfie Day
was celebrated was on June 21, 2014. It was started by DJ Rick McNeely
as a way to get people to enjoy taking selfies of themselves and to do it in
a creative way. Not long after he invented it, the holiday took off. Source:
