LOST CREEK HOMEOWNERS
Welcome to the June 2020 issue of Lost Creek’s newsletter. Keep this free
newsletter coming by supporting the advertisers in this publication.
THE CORONA VIRUS
Hopefully this very serious Covid-19 pandemic will have at least started
to subside when this newsletter arrives at your home. However there was
no way of knowing what the situation would be when this June issue of
the newsletter was submitted to the publisher on April 25 th . Whatever the
situation has become, please be aware that the Lost Creek HOA and Crest
Management will do their best to support our homeowners. The Board
of Directors has been and will continue to hold their monthly meetings
by teleconferencing through Crest Management until such time as local
government decides that it is safe to resume normal meeting venues.
PLEASE REGISTER ON THE CREST
MANAGEMENT WEBSITE
Go to www.crest-management.com and click on the Homeowner Login
Box. Due to the security and privacy of their previous website, old
passwords were not transferred. This means if you haven’t already, you
will need to reset your password. You can do this by visiting www.crestmanagement.com/login
and select Forgot Password. Whether you’re a
Homeowner or Board Member, logging in is the key to accessing your
account. Once logged in, you will have a new dashboard that will be your
one-stop-shop to meeting all your needs easily and efficiently. If you don’t
register, you won’t receive email notices, be able to download forms, look
at Board meeting agendas, see meeting minutes, review your account
or view other important information. If you have a problem registering
or don’t have your account number, call Christopher Sharp or Matthew
Caskey at Crest Management. They will walk you through it because they
have step by step instructions on PDF files that they can send to you. Don’t
rely on social media websites for your information regarding Lost Creek,
it could actually be misleading. Contact Cristopher or Matthew instead.
WILL THE OFFICIAL LOST CREEK
MONTHLY NEWSLETTER CEASE?
If homeowners want the Monthly Newsletter to continue, a few Lost
Creek homeowners need to get together and form a Newsletter
Committee so that the work does not fall to just one person. I’ll gladly
work with the committee for the first few months to get things going. Of
the 556 homes in Lost Creek, there must be a few homeowners who have
an affinity for writing and want to spread useful information. If not, then
the Official July issue just might be the last. Let me know by emailing
me at: lostcreeknewsletter@outlook.com. Hopefully the Lost Creek
Newsletter will not cease, but will continue and that there are concerned
homeowners who will step forward and volunteer.
2020 POOL SEASON
Once there is no longer a “Stay Home, Stay Safe” mandate, the Board will
decide when the pool can be opened and what the schedule will be.
It will be determined after consulting with our property management
company, our insurance agent and our pool management company. It
will also be dependent on our pool management company being able to
hire lifeguards for the expected season.
LOST CREEK CLUBHOUSE
The clubhouse has really taken shape. Hopefully construction will be
completed by sometime in August. Following that, volunteers will be
sought to help with furnishing and decorating.
SEE A STREET LIGHT OUT?
Contact CenterPoint Energy at 713-207-2222 or go to their website to
report an outage. You will need to get the number that’s on the side
of the light pole to let them know which light is out and also tell them
the nearest address where the pole is located. www.centerpointenergy.
National Selfie Day
Cell phones and social media have transformed our lives. These
technologies have enabled us to communicate with each other in a
way that just wasn’t possible before their invention. And one form
communication or self-expression depending on how it’s used, it the selfie
- the act of taking a picture of yourself with a cell phone or webcam and
posting it to social media. It’s an act that has taken the world by storm,
which is probably why there’s now a holiday to celebrate it called National
Selfie Day. A day, which has been celebrated annually since 2014 on June
21 st . So why not grab your cell phone, snap a picture of yourself and post
it on the Internet on this glorious holiday? After all, millions of people all
over the world are probably doing that very act anyway - holiday or not.
The History of the Selfie: While people have been taking pictures of
themselves for quite some time, most experts agree that the selfie first
evolved into its modern version when people started taking pictures
of themselves to post on MySpace between 2003 and 2005. However,
it was a drunk Australian on Flickr in 2004 who coined the term “selfie”
to describe the act of taking a picture of yourself and posting it to social
media. Then as the years passed and cell phone technology, as well as the
independent technologies of the various social media outlets improved,
selfies themselves began to improve. And as they improved, they
increased in popularity. In 2013, the selfie would then hit the mainstream
when the Oxford Dictionary added the term “selfie.”
The History of National Selfie Day: The first time National Selfie Day
was celebrated was on June 21, 2014. It was started by DJ Rick McNeely
as a way to get people to enjoy taking selfies of themselves and to do it in
a creative way. Not long after he invented it, the holiday took off. Source:
JUNE IS NATIONAL CAMPING MONTH
National Camping Month in June is an excellent time to pack up your gear and experience nature. Whether
you like roughing it or prefer to have a few modern conveniences when heading out to the trail, it’s
important to keep a few things in mind:
1. Make sure you have plenty of fresh water or a fresh water source.
2. Take a first aid kit and that it is stocked.
3. Pack waterproof matches.
4. Take non-perishable food such as granola bars, jerky, peanut butter, chocolate bars and dried fruits,
especially if you are not taking a cooler.
5. Pack fruits, vegetables and meats separately and keep chilled in a cooler.
6. Include sunblock, even for cloudy days.
7. Rain gear, jackets and blankets are necessary for cooler weather.
Around the country, there are a variety of campsites available. The more modern campsite includes showers
and recreational facilities. These often include water hookups and parking pads for RVs and campers and
cabins to rent as well as more primitive sites with no electrical hookups designed for tent usage. Other
parks only allow primitive camping and require everything you pack into the park to be packed out. So,
seriously consider your needs if you are hiking into the park for your stay. These are not for the glampers.
Gather family and friends, don’t forget the s’mores supply and go camping! Nature is calling and there are
so many ways to enjoy a weekend or even more camping. National Camping Month has been observed
since the 1970s. Source: https://nationaldaycalendar.com
Cheesy Potatoes on the Grill
INGREDIENTS:
4 slices Bacon
3 large Baking Potatoes
1 large Onion, sliced
1 cup processed Cheese, cubed
1/2 tsp. Salt
1/4 tsp. Black Pepper
1/2 tsp. dried Parsley
2 Tbs. Butter or Margarine
1 Tbs. Bacon Drippings
DIRECTIONS: In a heavy skillet over medium-high heat, fry the bacon until
crisp, reserving one tablespoon of the drippings. Drain the bacon on a paper
towel and crumble when it’s cool enough to handle. Set aside.
Peel and slice the potatoes, placing them on a 9-inch by 13-inch double-layer
of aluminum foil as you go. Separate the sliced onion into rings, and layer them
over the potato slices. Add the crumbled bacon bits, cheese, salt, pepper and
parsley. Dot the potatoes with butter or margarine, and drizzle the bacon fat
over the top of the mixture.
Wrap the foil loosely around the potatoes, but make sure the ends are well
sealed. Cook on the grill about 4 inches from the hot coals for about an hour,
or until tender. Remember to turn the package often to keep the potatoes
from burning. Serve warm from the grill. www.razzledazzlerecipes.com/
WHAT’S THAT
NET ON MY
TREE TRUNK?
By Deborah Birge, Fort
Bend County Master
Gardener
If you see a net over
your tree trunk, you’re
the lucky winner of
the Bark Lice Lottery!
Bark lice are small,
soft-bodied insects
that live on hardwood
trees, especially Live
Oaks and sometimes
on Pecans. Their
webbing appears in
midsummer and can
cover a tree trunk and
large branches very
quickly. But don’t be
alarmed - bark lice
are a great clean-up crew feeding on fungi, bacteria, dead insects and
lichens!
Although some people think they’re unsightly, bark lice are highly
beneficial and should be left alone. With the first fall frosts, they’ll begin
to decline, along with their web.
For more information about this fungus visit: aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu/
galveston/weekly_Q&A/ts&p_14.htm. For more gardening information
and photos, follow us on Facebook and visit our website at fbmg.org.
HAVE YOU HEARD ABOUT EARTH-KIND® LANDSCAPING?
It’s about conserving water, reducing fertilizer and pesticide use, reducing
landscape waste and more! Visit https://aggie-horticulture.tamu.edu for
information about this environmentally-friendly landscaping technique.
GARDEN TIPS FOR JUNE
Lawns: Apply iron sulfate or chelete to St. Augustine grass lawns.
• Mow St. Augustine to a 2-inch height now to protect roots from the sun.
Never cut off more than a third of the leaf.
• Continue treatment of lawns for chinch bug. As the temperature hits 80
degrees, chinch bugs begin to reproduce in the hottest and driest part
of the lawn, usually next to cement. Use diazinon or dursban granules.
Flowers: Overwatered hibiscus, purslane and bougainvillea won’t bloom.
• Keep flowers pinched off of coleus and caladiums to encourage more of
the beautiful foliage.
Shrubs: Watch Camellias and Azaleas, they’re setting their blooms now
for next season. So give them a good mulch and plenty of water. Mulch
well with oak leaves and/or pine needles to keep soil acidic. Benefits of
Mulching: Mulching (organic or inorganic) is a layer of material on the
surface of the soil around the plant. Mulches conserve water by reducing
evaporation, insulates the soil and protects it from the drying wind and
hot sun. Mulches break the force of rain and irrigation water and tend to
prevent erosion, soil compaction, and crusting. Lastly, a 2-3 inch layer of
mulch will almost eliminate weed problems.
