THE BUCKET LIST
from the wall — one upper and one lower, barely enough
room for our luggage, and a tiny sink with a tap that
leaked water you couldn’t drink, brush your teeth with,
or dare wash your face in. The only toilet was located
two train-cars down — and it could only be used when
the train was moving, if you get my meaning. Oh, the
wonders of travel!
In Aswan, we visited the temples of Philae, a once-sacred
complex of resplendent monuments, colonnades and
courtyards dedicated to Isis, the goddess of healing and
magic. What made it even more impressive was learning
that UNESCO saved the temples from a watery grave
beneath the Nile back in the 1970s. Flooded by the
construction of a dam, workers dismantled the temples
like giant jigsaw puzzles, painstakingly transferring them
block-by-block from their original location on Philae
Island and reassembling them on the higher ground of
nearby Agilkia Island! All in the name of persevering
history.
The next morning’s wake-up call came at 3:45 a.m. for
a three-hour Jeep ride across the Sahara to Abu Simbel,
the site of a temple that, somehow, rivals the pyramids.
Built by Ramses II in the 13th Century BCE, this
masterwork is cut into a sandstone cliff. With the sun
rising behind us, we gazed upon the temple, dwarfed by
the colossal, 66-foot carved reliefs of the mighty king that
stand guard on either side of the entrance. Alongside the
temple, equally impressive, is the shrine built for his wife,
Nefertari.
Like the ancient temples and pyramids, Egyptian food
didn’t disappoint. There was Koshari — layers of rice,
pasta and lentils topped with caramelized onions and
garlic chili sauce; a stuffed veggie dish called Mashi; and,
of course, shawarma. But perhaps our best meal was a
traditional Nubian supper. Nubians are indigenous to the
region, having occupied present-day Egypt and northern
Sudan starting around 5,000 BCE. They speak their
