EARLY LEARNING
Give your child the best
possible start.
Located in the grounds of the
Junior School on Mitcham
Campus, Mitcham, our centre
offers children wonderful
opportunities to participate
in a wide range of engaging
activities.
Focused on positive community relationships,
best outcomes for children and continuous
improvement, we provide a safe and supportive
learning environment. Children are taught to
respect one another and to value interactions
with others through play and discovery.
Children can access secure grassed play areas
and enjoy supervised access to the creek, farm
and campus animals.
Both indoors and outside, they can explore,
manipulate, discover, experiment and express
themselves in many varied ways.
Children learn to be responsible citizens
and develop an understanding of sustainable
practices.
They recycle and reuse and actively engage
in growing and caring for plants in their
environment.
Nestled beside Brownhill Creek, the Scotch ELC
provides many opportunities to investigate and
understand the beauty of nature.
CARING STAFF
Our trained Early Childhood staff members
provide a safe and happy environment where
children can develop creatively, socially,
emotionally, physically and intellectually.
They have an extensive knowledge of Early
Childhood development and the principles of
Positive Psychology including the wellbeing
program, Program Achieve.
Staying abreast of, and implementing current
best practice, our staff members create
learning programs that enable each child to
develop their potential, while learning through
play and authentic experiences.
Information about each child’s progress,
including a per-term assessment of their
wellbeing, strengths and areas of need is
documented and shared with their family.
PERSONALISED
LEARNING
Children may start at our ELC from
the age of 3 years. They will be able
to explore the world guided by a
Reggio Emilia inspired approach
with personalised learning programs
for every child. Based on each
child’s interests, these programs
will help enhance the learning
outcomes for each child and ensure
that every child enjoys a curriculum
that is inclusive and encourages
their participation.
As we believe parents are the
best source of information
in understanding their child’s
educational needs and wellbeing,
we encourage parents’ opinions
and feedback. We also encourage
each child to be actively involved
in their own learning to help them
develop independence, problem
solving strategies, resilience and life
skills.
Once children turn 4 years of age,
they will continue their journey
to school-readiness, enjoying
the group dynamics and shared
learning of Specialist lessons in
French, Music and Library visits. Art
and Dance are taught by external
providers.
STRONG COMMUNITY
Children at our ELC are a part
of the Scotch Community
and House System. As they
grow older, they have the
opportunity to establish
relationships with an older
student in the Junior School in
the form of a buddy.
This helps children to transition confidently to
their school years and to also understand their
connection and relationships with the wider
community.
Our focus is on creating positive community
relationships and a safe, supportive learning
environment.
Children are taught to respect each other and
to value their interactions with others through
play and discovery. We recognise and value
families’ individual cultures, identities, abilities
and strengths.
We welcome and encourage families to be
part of the Scotch Community from the very
beginning.
In addition to regular social events, we
encourage parents to be involved in a number
of ways.
Parents are warmly invited to spend some time
in the ELC before they leave each day to share
a special interest or skill with the children, or
to represent the centre on the Junior School
Parents and Friends Committee.
THREE-YEAR-OLD PROGRAM
Once they have turned 3, we welcome children
to spend a minimum of two full days with us
each week.
Through play, the children develop an
understanding of the people and the world
around them, that will form the basis for their
future learning.
FOUR-YEAR-OLD PROGRAM
From the age of 4, children enjoy a minimum of
three full days with us each week.
All children are unique,
lifelong learners. They
take risks and use their
creativity to confidently
explore their world.
PLAYGROUP
We offer Playgroup to children prior
to them starting in the 3-year-old
program.
Parents attend with children
allowing opportunities to meet
with other families from the
Scotch Community. Children will
participate in an educational
program designed to familiarise
them with the ELC in a relaxed and
fun way – including imaginative play,
sensory exploration and developing
creativity. Bring along a piece of
fruit for sharing during morning tea.
Numbers are limited and the
program runs for 8 weeks each
term.
