Loan Repayment Supports New Graduates Working in Public Service ALEGRÍA DE LA CRUZ ’03 graduated with a Boalt degree—and more than $100,000 in combined debt from her undergraduate and law school education. Weighing her career opportunities, she faced a choice between landing a private practice job earning $140,000 annually or returning to her roots to serve farm workers in California’s Central Valley. The public interest position she favored came with a starting salary of just $28,500. In the end, De La Cruz followed her heart. She went to work as a staff attorney for the Indigenous Farmworker Project at the nonprofit California Rural Legal Assistance in Fresno, California. “The idea of coming back to my community was incredibly important to me,” says De La Cruz, a 29-year-old woman whose parents were organizers for the United Farm Workers union. “I knew I wanted to be with my hands elbow deep with clients in places where I was most needed.” De La Cruz credits Boalt’s Loan Repayment Assistance Program (LRAP) with making that career move economically viable. “With programs like this in place, it makes the ability to do public interest work a reality, even for the poorest of us,” she says. LRAP extends forgivable loans to Boalt graduates who pursue modestly compensated work at nonprofit public interest organizations or government agencies. Privately sponsored funds like the Justice Stanley Mosk Memorial Award help support LRAP and preserve the career aspirations of recent graduates like De La Cruz. Mosk, whose career spanned more than 60 years of public service to the state of California, “felt very strongly that young people should not be deterred from public service because of financial concerns,” says his son Associate Justice Richard Mosk of the 2nd District California Court of Appeal. Richard Mosk noted that his father had to leave the University of Chicago Law School for financial reasons and completed his legal education in California. “He believed fervently in loan forgiveness programs so that those who truly desired to enter public service and were willing to accept some financial sacrifice to do so would not be precluded from such service by heavy debt,” explains Richard Mosk. “He designated Boalt Hall as his choice for such a program because he felt an obligation to the state of California and because Boalt Hall is one of the nation’s great legal institutions and has produced so many great public servants and legal scholars.” De La Cruz, who earned her undergraduate degree from Yale University, credits the loan forgiveness she receives with not only relieving a pressing debt Elizabeth Josselyn Boalt Associates Anonymous � Law School Sproul Associates Barbara & David Kaplan � G. At California Rural Legal Assistance, she works with a vulnerable population of farm workers from the Mexican states of Oaxaca, Guerrero and Michoacan. Culturally isolated and speaking pre-Columbian languages, these indigenous farm workers need legal advocacy on such basic issues as civil rights, wage and hour standards, and housing habitability, says De La Cruz. “Many are still struggling with Spanish, let alone English,” she says.
