DEAN’S MESSAGE
dear fr iends :
On behalf of the entire Boalt community, it is my pleasure to
present you with our Annual Report of Philanthropy. I also want
to thank you, our extended family of alumni and friends, for the
loyalty and enthusiasm you demonstrate toward Boalt. The dedication
of 4,000 donors, including 800 new contributors, makes
an enormous difference to the life of the school.
Our two-year-old Partners in Leadership program
is a great success and this year achieved
100 percent participation from 22 firms. That
brings us to a total of 33 firms—with even
more firms eager to join. As volunteers and
donors, you help us provide unparalleled legal
instruction to our amazingly talented
students, recruit and retain our world-class
faculty, conduct cutting-edge research, and
address some of society’s toughest problems.
Your commitment sustains and enhances
Boalt’s proud tradition of excellence—all the
more important as state support is in sharp decline.
In response to the Hurricane Katrina tragedy, the Boalt community
truly exceeded expectations with an outpouring of offers for
housing, computers and other assistance to the 18 Tulane law students
who studied with us this fall. Our students and faculty have
been deeply engaged in helping the displaced students catch up
with their studies and get settled quickly into life at Boalt.
We hope our ten new alumni chapters—just started this year—
will bring Boalt a little closer to you. These chapters are generating
enormous interest and enthusiasm, with attendance at chapter activities
far exceeding anyone’s expectations. We continue to be
inspired by your intellectual interest in the school and in the work
of our faculty and students.
I want to take the opportunity also to acknowledge the leaders
who have this past year provided important strategic advice and
counsel to Boalt Hall. Those individuals include Dana Welch
’87, past president of the Boalt Hall Alumni Association and now
