PROTECTING THE

ENDANGERED ONES ON LAND !

The threat of extinction of endangered

animals is one of the main global issue

which the whole world is facing. It is

estimated that 1/3 of all land mammals

risk extinction by 2050. Our country,

Pakistan also has majestic creatures which

are threatened and listed as endangered

species which might get extinct, if

pertinent steps not taken.

Tuning Into The Big Idea

Keeping this fact in mind, we team 5-H,

decided to direct our inquiry towards UN

Global Goal Life on land , specifically

focused on protecting and preventing the

extinction of endangered species.

We were tuned into the big main idea through

a video as a provocation, which touched our

hearts and probed thinking skills within us. As a

result, we came up with research questions

which we later found through various sources.

Our Exhibition!

OUR INQUIRY!

Our research & findings through Inquiry

We started our research using "The Big 6 Research Model".

Formulating questions was our first step in the process.

Throughout the journey, we visited different places such as

museum, animal shelter home and met experts who were

passionate, inspiring and had dedicated. We questioned

them in order to find out the answers to the research

questions we had developed during the inquiry process.

We effectively utilized our

COMMUNICATION SKILLS while

carefully listening , observing and by

asking questions during our visits.

Visit to Sind Wild Life Museum

Our very first visit was to the Sindh Wild Life

Museum, situated at Wafai Road Karachi . The

purpose of the visit was to find out the

endangered and extinct animal species in the

province of Sind, including birds, reptiles and

mammals. We found very interesting and useful

information pertaining to various animals

endangered in Sindh, which was shared by Mr

Malik, the Director. Team 5-H showed excitement

and curiosity while observing the endangered

animals preseved within the museum.

We, then had an informative live session with a wild life

advocate and nature passionate individual, "Mr Omar

Khayam" from Dawood Foundation. He shared

documentaries related to Margalla Hills National Park

and Chitral National Park and highlighted the

interdependency of humans, animals and plants within

those regions. Through this live session, we found the

steps taken by our government to protect endangered

snow leopards and Markhors population in Northern

areas, one such being compensating the farmers in

northern areas in case their livestock gets attacked by

snow leoprads. Team 5-H , posed relevant questions such

as how snow leopards and Markhor, in Chitral Territory,

are being protected, since both of them have been listed

as endangered by IUCN and WWF.

Later, we invited a Biologist Ms Hameira

Ayesha from WWF- Pakistan with a purpose

to find out major man-made and natural

factors that caused endangerment of

animals and our responsibility towards life

on land, in local and global context. She

proved through statistics and data, how the

number of animals in Pakistan are moving

towards endangerment and extinction.She

was of the view that mainly humans are the

root cause for the decrease in animal

population as humans :

But she added that natural factors such as

sudden climate changes also play a role in

the decrease of animal popultaion.

Hameira Ayesha

We became KNOWLEDGEABLE as we

developed conceptual understanding of

issues and ideas having local and global

significance

We developed RESEARCH SKILLS while

recording, collecting , organizing and later

interpreting our findings.

Visit to KAWS- Animal Shelter

Home

Finally, we visited KAWS- Karachi

Animal Welfare Society, Animal

Shelter Home and Vet Hospital to find

out and observe the facilities and care

given to the locally rescued animals

within the shelter , which included

Kites, Hamsters, dogs, cats and other

birds. We witnessed the OPD of

animals brought for vaccination.

We have became CARING as we think

more about animals now and try to be kind

and helpful to them.

Different books related to the inquiry

from the school library and e-books

from epic.com were referred during

research, various sites, and

newspapers were explored too during

the learning journey to jot the findings.

Involving Community

The exhibition takes place

when all the stake holders

join their hands together.

During the research

process and inquiry, we

tried to involve as many

community members as

we could, keeping limited

resources in mind.

A session with the parents in the beginning was held to introduce

the learning process of Exhibition and to have discussion on how

parents can help their children in this important stage of PYP.

Concluding the Inquiry

Endangered Animals Of

Pakistan

Through the rigorous research process, we

concluded that there are around 30,178

species that are threatened with extinction

world wide.

Furthermore, we found that around 90

species of mammals, reptiles and birds are

approaching the critical stage of extinction in

Pakistan. A few mammals sadly have been

reported to vanish from the wildlife’s habitat,

which includes tigers, deer, blackbucks, lions

and Indian horned rhinoceros in our country.

On the other hand, animals including Asiatic

Cheetah, Indian Wild Ass, Hangul, Siberian

crane, long-billed vultures and hawksbill

turtles are vulnerable to extinction and

several animals are already endangered

including Kashmir grey Langurs, Indus

dolphins, finback whales, Balochistan beers,

green turtles, musks and hog deer.

Moreover, we concluded that the animals

which are endangered or have become

extinct, whether in Pakistan or outside

Pakistan are mainly due to man-made causes

as mentioned above.

Hence, flourishing life on

land is the foundation for our

life on planet. Every living thing

is created for a reason whether

its humans or animals. A slight

disturbance in any biotic and

abiotic domain will result in

destruction of the entire globe.

Action Taken By Us

As part of PYP Exhibition, we

proved ourselves as active

citizens and demonstarted our

understanding, application of

knowledge and skills, reflected

our learning and made a tiny

contribution to the global cause

of protecting endangered

animals , UN SGD Goal 15, Life

on land. We tried to trigger a

positive change by taking the

ACTIONS below:

Bought food for the animals kept at

KAWS shelter home and fed them.

Created and distributed bookmarks to

advocate protection of endangered

animals world wide during the carnival.

Created bird feeders to be placed at

home for ensuring availability of food for

birds and also created for keeping in

public parks.
