It was more than 40 years ago when
Jack Lally came knocking on Fran
Beckman’s door. She was working for the
home care office at DePaul Hospital but he
wanted her to come work for Cardinal
Ritter Institute. That day began a long history
for the Beckman family and Cardinal
Ritter Senior Services.
In the early days, Fran’s daughters,
Ann, Barb and Linda, would spend their
summers working in the accounting department,
medical records, billing – you name
it, they would do it. Growing up on a farm,
the sisters were always taught by their parents
to give back, to take care of others.
Each year at Thanksgiving their parents
would cook up a feast – turkey, stuffing,
mashed potatoes and all the trimmings - for
all of the home health aides that Fran
supervised, and the Beckman sisters would
help serve and clean up. Working alongside
their mom at CRSS reinforced that
desire in each of them to nurture and care
for others.
Ann spent her summers during high
school and during college working in the
medical records and home health departments.
After having children, she returned
to CRSS and worked in the accounting
department before becoming the manager
at Santa Maria Apartments and now administrator
of Our Lady of Life Apartments. It
was at Santa Maria that she first realized
the impact of her work and the love and
appreciation that the residents had for her.
“We would have these parties and all of the
residents would come. One of the parties
happened to be on my birthday, and I
thought they might have a cake for me,”
Ann said. “All of a sudden, I heard all of
these sirens. I raced back into the building,
but couldn’t find any sign of trouble. When
I came back out, the firemen were there
with a huge cake, full of candles – all
arranged by my residents!” After 25 years
of working for CRSS, just like her mom,
Ann still finds caring for her residents to be
the most rewarding part of her job.
The senior adults at DuBourg House, 5890 Eichelberger, in St. Louis, benefited from a
Home Builders Charitable Foundation grant for wooden hand rails to increase resident safety
and mobility. Deca Realty donated the labor for installation and finishing of the hand rails
along all interior hallways. The finished wood adds beauty as well as safety for the seniors
in the assisted living residence.
Dear Friends,
As this
beautiful summer
passes us
by so quickly,
we at Cardinal
Ritter Senior
Services are
working very
hard to help insure the quality of life
and care for those we currently serve
and those senior adults who will need
assistance in the future. No matter
what your political position may be, it
is important for each of us to be an
active advocate for improved health
care and health outcomes for senior
adults. I encourage you to let your
voice be heard around health issues for
those being set to the side and who
often are unable to speak for themselves,
which include our senior adults,
children, battered women, the homeless,
and helpless. Change, deep
change of a health care system that is
badly broken, must occur soon to provide
for the increasing number of folks
without coverage, access or follow up
care.
Recently, I was in the drug store
behind a senior adult lady who was trying
to explain to the pharmacist that
From the CEO...
her husband was very sick and getting
worse. He no longer recognized anyone
including her. She thought it was
her fault, because she couldn’t pay for
his medicine, and they had no insurance
that covered the expensive medication.
The clinic doctor had
explained to her that her husband must
have his medicine in order for him to
be able to be taken care of at home.
The doctor had given her some samples,
but they were gone. She was
frantic to get the medicine filled. She
told the pharmacist “I’ll give you all the
money I have – my grocery money, my
rent money, the money for my medicine,
if you will just fill this for my husband,
Will.” The pharmacist told her
he could only give her enough medicine
to equal the dollars she had. She
emptied 3 envelopes of grocery money,
rent money and her medication money
and he gave her medicine for only 5
days! As she stepped away, shoulders
down and tears running down her face,
I quietly approached her and asked if I
could be of help. The story ended with
CRSS being able to help her with the
medicine. We also got her linked up
with several other resources to help
with the burden of care for her husband
and lack of financial resources.
CRSS celebrates Senior Adult Week
May 10-17 was Older Americans
Week and CRSS celebrated our
senior adults with activities in
all of our facilities all week long!
2
I was able to help Dorry and Will
that Sunday because of your generosity.
I was given the grace to be in the
right place at the right time, CRSS gave
her back her hope ~~ You can give
other senior adults like her back their
hope.
I thank you for allowing us to
restore the light in Dorry’s eyes as she
began receiving help for her husband
who incidentally had progressive
Alzheimer’s Disease and the medicine
was to stop the progression of his disease.
I encourage you to speak up for
those in need who cannot help themselves,
using your voice, vote, and
action. I encourage you to give generously
to Cardinal Ritter Senior Services
where we have come to expect small
and large miracles because our God
grants them to our clients and employees
nearly every day through the generosity
of others like yourself.
May God shower blessings on you
and on your families!
Mature Mile
Our Lady of Life residents represented Cardinal Ritter Senior Services well Saturday, April 18th at the Go St. Louis Mature
Mile in Forest Park!
The Mature Mile is an event held in conjunction with the Family Fitness Weekend that encourages seniors, 60-years-of-age
or older to walk a mile. The event started in 2005 and continues to inspire hundreds of senior adults to get fit. Seniors train for
months preceding the event in anticipation of completing their fitness journey. Our Lady of Life’s Ralph Braun won the award
for being the “most mature” male in the race - Ralph is 93 yrs. young! Thanks to all who participated and made CRSS proud!
75 Years of Service from the Beckman Sisters continued from page 1
Linda was the youngest of the Beckman girls. Her
mom went to work for Cardinal Ritter when she was just 3
years old. Linda began her career as the management
assistant at Santa Maria before taking a break to raise her
family. (Even her daughter caught the CRSS “bug” – she
was a lifeguard at the old San Luis Apartments pool!) She
returned to Cardinal Ritter Senior Service several years
later and now serves as the manager for Holy Angels and
St. Clare of Assisi Senior Village. Linda’s favorite story
about working for CRSS involves a resident she met while
working at St. Patrick’s. Olivia had been a home health aide
that had worked for Linda’s mom years ago. “I will never
forget her telling me about how the home health aides all
fought over who was going to get to take care of mom
when she was sick,” Linda said. “They had to develop a
schedule so that everyone would get a chance to look after
her. And even when it wasn’t their turn, often times, they’d
stop by and just use the “secret” key hidden on the front
porch to let themselves in.” It’s stories like these that
remind Linda of how much her mom enjoyed working at
Cardinal Ritter, a feeling that she passed on to all of her
girls.
3
Barb is not only the sister who has been with Cardinal
Ritter Senior Services the longest, she’s also the employee
who has been with CRSS the longest – 38 years in July!
She’s worked in nursing, medical records, accounting and
finance and now serves as the Housing Operations Manager
for all of CRSS’s housing facilities. Barb says she always
remembers her mom coming home from work so happy and
full of stories of patients she was helping. “Cardinal Ritter
has always been so family-oriented, that was always clear in
the stories mom told us.” Nowadays, Barb loves to go the
housing facilities and see the residents gathered in the community
rooms, enjoying each others company and interacting
with one another. “It just touches my heart,” Barb said.
“I wish every senior adult could experience the wonderful
quality of life our residents have each and every day.”
All of the girls spoke of how their parents instilled in
them to always do the right thing, at the right moment, all
the time – something they continue to do for our residents
each and every day. Cardinal Ritter Senior Services gives
thanks to the Beckman girls for their years of service and
dedication to our residents and our mission – a true blessing
for us all!

IMPACT the Community!
Saint Louis Bread Co. has a long history of supporting their
local communities through fundraising and participation in community
events. In 2005, they joined with the United Way to create
the “Impact Your Community” program with the goal of bringing
Saint Louis Bread Co. employees and customers together for volunteer
projects that make a positive impact on their surrounding
community.
On June 27th, Saint Louis Bread Co. and the United Way
brought their “Impact Your Neighborhood” initiative to the
Cardinal Ritter Senior Services campus in Shrewsbury. More than
20 volunteers braved the 100 degree temperature,
met for breakfast at the Chippewa
Bread Company and caravanned to our campus
that morning ready to roll up their
sleeves and get to work! They weeded and
cleaned up the Blessing Garden and the
courtyard at Mother of Perpetual Help,
cleaned windows at Mary Queen and Mother
Center and Mother of Perpetual Help and
spruced up both the dining rooms at Mary
Queen and Mother Center. By the time they
were done our gardens looked beautiful and
the buildings were spotless!
We are grateful to all of the community
volunteers, the employees from Saint Louis
Young Neighbors in Action
In July, high school youth from Wisconsin descended
upon DuBourg House as part of Young Neighbors in Action.
Young Neighbors is a national service learning program that
teaches high school youth about Catholic social teaching and
the call to be of service to others. “Young Neighbors in
Action is a week-long service experience that provides a mix
of direct service, opportunities for learning and dialog, crosscultural
sharing, community building, prayer, and recreation,”
said Shelley Lang, who helped coordinate the project locally.
“The participants learn how poverty and a lack of respect for
human dignity impact the lives of real people and all of this is
done through the lens of the seven themes of Catholic social
teaching.”
Cardinal Ritter Senior Services partnered with two
groups of youth and their chaperones who spent 4 days helping
to spruce up DuBourg House. They worked to clean up
the courtyard area, and the flower beds out front, trimming
6
bushes and pulling weeds. They also cleaned and painted in
the Chapel and living room and even challenged our residents
to a few games of bowling on our Wii gaming system! (No
word yet on who won.)
The students interacted with the residents each day as
well, bringing their enthusiasm and joy of life, filling the halls
with laughter. Their presence was inspiring and their service
was greatly appreciated by residents and staff alike. “They
energized us all. It seemed very quiet when they left, but
they left us with a lot of fun memories and promised to send
pictures,” said Betty Vick, DuBourg House administrator.
“Some of the residents even committed to being pen-pals
with the students. We look forward to next summer and
another group of Young Neighbors in Action volunteers!”
CRSS is grateful to the students and their chaperones for
taking time out of their busy summer schedules to serve the
residents at DuBourg House!
Annual Community Volunteer Luncheon
Volunteers are a very
important part of our
CRSS team. They come
from many different backgrounds
and contribute in
many different ways.
Volunteers make all the
difference for our residents
by bringing a fresh
outlook and so much
enthusiasm. They provide
a demonstration of the
community’s interest and
concern for our residents,
and give the residents a sense of belonging. Volunteers provide
human warmth and a sense of caring. And of course, with their
extra pair of hands, our staff can accomplish so much more.
On April 20th, Cardinal Ritter Senior Services honored
those who give generously of their time and talent to serve our
residents at our annual Community Volunteer Appreciation
Luncheon. Guests enjoyed a lovely wine and cheese reception
and piano music played by Lynn Wellman of Remnant Productions, followed by a delicious lunch and an inspiring talk by Rick
Skinner, Vice President of the Volunteer Center at the United Way of Greater St. Louis.
“Volunteers are such a great resource for us,” said Chris Vassolo, Activities Director at Mary, Queen and Mother
Center. “Our residents look forward to the volunteers’ smiling faces and helping hands in every aspect of their daily lives
here, be it at arts and crafts on Friday afternoons, assisting them to mass or just visiting them individually. Honoring these
folks for their outstanding service each year at the Volunteer Luncheon is the least we can do because what they do is such a
gift to all of us!”
