Fall 2010
An Evening with Motown…and CRSS
Friday, November 5th marks the 8th annual CRSS fundraiser. This year’s event, An
Evening with Motown, begins at 6pm at the Crowne Plaza in Clayton. Event co-chairs,
Jim Laurentius and Dan Wienstroer, promise a good time for all attendees! The evening
includes silent and oral auction items, appetizers, open bar, sit down dinner and music
and dancing with the Fabulous Motown Revue. The 2010 ambassadors, Terry and
Marianne Barber, Fr. Jim Cormack, Tom and Elsie Gorski and Joe and Patricia Kelley,
along with the CRSS Board of Directors have chosen the William H. Erker Family to
receive the Heart and Cross Award. The award is given each year to an individual,
group, program or family who serve and support senior adults.
Sponsorships for the night are available with Missouri
state NAP tax credits. Tables of ten can be purchased for
$1000 and individual tickets are available for $125. This
year’s raffle is a Trip for Two to Hawaii or $2500 cash and
CRSS celebrated Senior Adult Week in May. Despite a week of wacky weather,
the week long celebration of our residents was a success and included opening
ceremonies with Mr. Whitey Herzog, entertainment with Fredbird and Bridget
Kossur, special dinners with guests at all programs and facilities and special
events throughout the week. CRSS could not serve senior adults without our
employees so this week concludes with Employee Appreciation Day!
Dear Friends of Cardinal Ritter
Senior Services:
Recently I received a call from a
senior adult who is lonely, mentally
ill, hungry, and living in a tiny unairconditioned
hotel room. She was
calling me I think because she was
completely at her wits end. No matter
how much she tries, she cannot
pull out the answers she needs to sustain herself, much
less to live a life with any level of quality. I think she
needed to hear a caring voice.
At Cardinal Ritter Senior Services we have so many
senior adults entrusted to us who really want to feel a
part of the community, who want to be happy and safe,
but they just do not have the tools they need to handle
life on their own. Through the varied services at CRSS,
we provide help to those individuals, day in and day
out. Sometimes they get better and then they slip into
From the CEO...
darkness again. A few of these residents/clients have
some resources, but most of them do not have any
resources. This is where you can help us at CRSS help
others. The few resources these folks counted on have
dried up with the income recession, the closing of so
many sites where they get food or help with medication
or a place to sleep.
As you count your blessings, I ask you to remember
senior adults who are in need and who are so grateful
for any help that they receive, and if you want to be a
part of the mission of Jesus, join with us at Cardinal
Ritter Senior Services.
Bless you and your families!
Sister Suzanne Wesley, CSJ
News from the Development Office
Why do you give?
Cardinal Ritter Senior Services is
blessed to have many generous and
faithful supporters! We asked a few
Why Do you give to CRSS?
Bill Hopfinger, CRSS Board Member
Although I had
been somewhat
aware of the mission
and work of
CRSS for quite
some time, it was in
the Summer of 2000
that I came face to
face with the wonderful
services offered by CRSS, specifically,
Mary Queen and Mother Center.
My dad had a rather severe stroke in
June of that year and although being a
health professional myself, it was still a
rather scary and daunting experience
helping my Mom choose a place in
which this man, a decorated veteran of
WW II and larger than life figure to me,
would spend the remaining days of his
life on this earth.
At MQMC we found a wonderful
and caring staff who not only had posted
the mission statement for quality
care of older adults with emphasis on
dignity, but lived that mission every day.
The facility became the center of my
Mom’s social life and the employees
embraced her in the same Christian way
they did my father until her untimely
death in late 2001.
Interested in supporting
Cardinal Ritter
Senior Services? We
always welcome monetary
donations which
help us serve senior
adults without
resources. We also
appreciate in kind gifts.
A few items on our Wish
List include:
CRSS Wish List
• DVD/VCR
• Patio Furniture
• Board Games
• Outdoor games
• Patio cushions
• Porch Swing
• New bed pillows
• Plastic mattress covers
• New Blankets (twin
size)
• Comforters (twin size)
with bed skirts
Although my family was fortunate
enough to be able to afford Dad’s care, I
soon realized this wasn’t the case for
numerous residents. Regardless, the caring
and compassionate way in which all
the residents were treated was surely
commendable. Being in the health care
profession myself for over 30 years, I am
acutely aware that providing high quality
care (particularly 24/7) requires maintaining
a high quality staff, and this is
not an inexpensive proposition.
Furthermore, often times government
programs only cover a fraction of the
cost of providing care. Therefore, to
maintain the mission and work of CRSS
it is imperative that we develop and
maintain a strong list of donors to help
provide care for some of our most vulnerable
brothers and sisters. In short,
this is why I am proud and happy to support
the work of CRSS.
DeCA Realty
Businesses
that give back
can make a difference! At Deca
Realty, we believe that Cardinal Ritter
Senior Services (CRSS) is one of the
best local charities that we can
support. The services of CRSS are
invaluable to the increasing number of
elderly citizens in our area. And, seeing
the smiling faces of the many seniors
who benefit from CRSS shows us our
money is being well-spent. It is a winwin
for both Deca Realty and the senior
citizens of our community!
“I started volunteering about 8 or 9
years ago when I was living in Montana.
Originally it was about having something
to do and a way to be helpful. But
now, volunteering at Mary Queen, I
enjoy the interaction with the residents,
visitors and staff. It really makes me
feel good, and it keeps me healthy in
mind and body too.”
Daughters of Charity Foundation
The Daughters of Charity
Foundation of St. Louis focuses some of
its grant funding to assist seniors to
remain independent in their homes. We
have been pleased to assist Cardinal
Ritter Senior Services with transportation
services to allow the seniors they
serve to access door to door transportation
to needed areas for such important
services which will enhance their quality
of life. Such services will hopefully
allow many seniors, who do not have
the means or opportunity to drive, to
remain independent as long as possible.
‘Tis the Season
it is not too early to start
thinking about your holiday giving!
if your family, company or organization
you belong to is interested
in “adopting” a CRSS program or
facility we would love to work with
you! Towel sets, bathrobes, pajamas,
bedding and gift cards to
bookstores and Target make
fantastic gifts for our low income
seniors. Please contact us if you
Volunteers
Young Neighbors in Action and
Life Teen Volunteers at CRSS
This summer Young Neighbors in Action volunteers from
Wisconsin and Life Teen volunteers from South Dakota and Nebraska
descended upon our facilities, bringing energy and enthusiasm and a
lot of hard work to DuBourg House, Our Lady Of Life
Apartments, Mary Queen and Mother Center, St.
Elizabeth’s Assisted Living Facility and our Shrewsbury
Adult Daycare Program.
In June, several teens from the Green Bay area spent
3 days at DuBourg House where they organized the activity
closet, washed the resident’s bus, put in a new garden
and fountain, and played games and visited with residents.
On their last day with us, the staff at DuBourg
House rewarded them for all of their hard work by taking
them for a tasty treat at Ted Drewes!
In July, 20 teens from Omaha and the Pierre and
Piedmont areas in South Dakota spent 4 days
painting at our Shrewsbury Adult Daycare
Program, sprucing up the building at St.
Elizabeth’s, cleaning carports and doing some
landscape cleanup at Our Lady of Life, and shining
up the resident’s wheelchairs at Mary Queen
and Mother Center.
We are very grateful for the long distances
these volunteers traveled and for all of their hard
work and the wonderful joy and cheerfulness that
they brought to our residents!
Help Wanted:
7
to 3:30 p.m. and on Wednesday and Thursday
evenings from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. They would also like
a volunteer to assist with resident spa time on the
first Wednesday of the month from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and
a volunteer who would like to play poker with residents
on Tuesday mornings at 11 a.m.
• Our Property Maintenance department (Shrewsbury
Campus) needs someone approximately 3 hours per
week to help with some general clerical duties like
filing and data entry into a spreadsheet and the
Human Resource Department would like a volunteer
to greet and direct visitors, answer the telephone,
file, copy and stock supplies.
• The gift shop at Mary Queen and Mother Center is looking
for volunteers to work a 4 hour shift each Thursday.
if you, or anyone you know, would like to volunteer for one of the above opportunities, please contact the
development office at (314) 961-8000 ext. 347 or by email at kethington@ccstl.org
