Mission
The American Swedish Institute is a gathering place for all people to share experiences
around themes of culture, migration, the environment and the arts, informed by enduring
links to Sweden.
Vision
The American Swedish Institute will be a leading museum and cultural center of international
reputation which invites all people to gather to connect their pasts to their shared future, to
understand their heritage in relation to others, and to discover their role as neighbors and
global citizens. Vibrant, ongoing ties to Sweden will illuminate and inspire all these endeavors.
Values
Crayfish Party
Kids at the Castle
The American Swedish Institute is commited to the following principles:
Stewardship: We embrace the legacy of Stewardship given to us in the Turnblad Mansion,
our collections and our diverse community.
Hospitality: We invest in our role as a welcoming place for all people and develop authentic
relationships with communities local, national and international.
Learning: We create transformational learning experiences by providing a platform for refl ection,
participation, collaboration and the exchange of ideas.
Innovation: We create beautiful spaces, innovative programs and outstanding services, in the
entrepreneurial spirit of Swan J. Turnblad.
Sustainability: We incorporate values of social responsibility into our programs, facilities and
operations that sustain the well-being of our organization, community and the environment.
1
Glancing backward, the American Swedish Institute (ASI) and the communities that we serve could never
have anticipated the worldwide changes we’ve encountered these past months as we now share this
Report to the Community for FY2019 (October 1, 2018 – September 30, 2019). Perhaps, however, we
were a little prescient in dedicating the year to a series of exhibitions and programs exploring the concept
of Shift, in which we hoped to cause our audiences to explore certain topics and themes through a different
focus and lens. Little did we understand at that time what major shifts were ahead of us.
Our 2018-19 year began with our annual Christmas exhibition, with a theme of Handmade Holidays
(November 10, 2018 –
January 13, 2019). Always one of our most popular attractions, the decorated
holiday Mansion and programs like the Julmarknad
market and celebration are an important time for generations of families to build
memories and traditions. Then 2019 ushered in Imagine: Surreal Photography by Erik Johansson (January 26 – April 28), a remarkable
exhibition organized by Sweden’s Natural History Museum that was later named one of Minnesota’s top arts events of the year by
MinnPost’s Artscape.
Coinciding with Imagine was perhaps one of our most physically impressive and functional(!) installations ever. Refl ect: Solar Egg by
Bigert and Bergström (March 6 – April 28) literally landed in our outdoor courtyard. Created by Swedish artists Matts Bigert and
Lars Bergström, it was a remarkable 5-meter-tall, egg-shaped structure sheathed in stainless golden mirror that both refl ected the
surroundings and functioned as working sauna. Originally designed as a thought-provoking response to the challenges facing Kiruna,
Sweden, a city which physically moved to allow mining — an industry vital to its economy
—
to continue, Solar Egg offered opportunities
to refl ect and discuss the future, sustainable development and environmental issues.
In a year full of excellence, an undeniable highlight was the fi ve-month residency of The Vikings Begin (May 17 – October 27) which
became one of ASI’s all-time most successful and well-attended exhibitions. It originated at Museum Gustavianum at Uppsala University
and showcased many original artifacts from area boat graves from pre-Viking society (550 to 800 CE). Based upon recent
scholarship of a university team led by Distinguished Professor of Archaeology Neil Price, the exhibition dazzled visitors with 1,500
year-old objects and haunting helmets and swords. Wee Thee Vikings in our Family Gallery sparked the imaginations of young folk
through productive play.
These exhibitions in turn generated many related programs including the successful Vikings University Day with lectures by world-renowned
scholars. Cocktails at the Castle and the new series of Summer Lawn Parties, which variously featured Vikings re-enactors,
along with live music and cult classic Viking fi lms.
Our classrooms and studios were bustling throughout the year thanks to an array of stimulating classes and workshops for all generations
in our language programs, as well as Nordic Craft ( slöjd) and Nordic Table programs. Classes ranged in topics from spoon carving,
wet felting, paper quilling, making birch bark star ornaments and baking Swedish ostkaka (a type of cheesecake). In refl ecting on 2019,
I’m pleased to say that our campus was fi lled by people of all ages and backgrounds, who gathered together for exhibitions, classes,
programs or shared meals, as detailed in this report.
This report is being released in June 2020 in the midst of a global pandemic crisis, which has been followed by a devastating period of
civil unrest triggered by the killing of George Floyd. Our community has been severely damaged. Lives, livelihoods, essential services
and cultural and educational resources have been lost or compromised in ways that affect us all, now and well into the future. Although
our campus (as of mid-June) remains closed to the public, we are pushing through these enormous challenges to fi nd ways to
serve and benefi t those who have come to depend upon ASI for so much. ASI is a resilient organization and we intend to continue
to be a safe and welcoming gathering place for people of diverse heritages to hear and honor each other’s experiences, stories and
traditions.
All of our work, past, present and future, is made possible only by the many contributions of our members, donors and volunteers
— and with the inspired leadership of a deeply invested Board and creative staff. Your generosity makes much possible and enables
us to work with assurance that we can continue to make a deep impact upon our community. Tack så hemskt mycket!
Wellstone Story Swap
When I was a child, I visited the American Swedish Institute once a year with my grandmother —
my mormor
— at Christmastime to enjoy the sights, sounds and fragrances of the holiday in this magical
place.
In the years that followed, the Institute was a somewhat quiet, insulated place that might have slowly faded
into a worn, neglected, irrelevant museum.
But in the last 20 years, under the leadership of Bruce Karstadt and an amazingly creative and energetic
staff, the American Swedish Institute has grown into the vibrant, transformational cultural institution it is
today, winning architecture awards for its environmentally sustainable 2012 addition, culinary acclaim for the Nordic-inspired food at
Fika Café and rave reviews for its diverse exhibitions, programs and events. More than 130,000 people make their way to 2600 Park
Avenue each year.
It has changed over time in response to the evolving needs, interests and circumstances.
Now, in June 2020, ASI’s doors and windows were boarded up with plywood, and our neighborhood and city are reeling in the
wake of recent police brutality, murder and expressions of local and global outrage at the persistent discrimination and inequity
that has plagued this nation and its minority community members. The Institute at present remains closed to the public due to the
COVID-19 pandemic, but is planning for reopening later this summer.
We understand that we are in the midst of a most profound challenge. The world has changed, and ASI and I are grieving, questioning
and changing with it.
In the days and months ahead we are committed to work together to reach out, engage, pay attention and be led by our communities’
needs; to enable ASI to become more relevant and connected to all of our constituents — our members, our surrounding
neighborhoods, our immigrant communities, our children and grandchildren — as we negotiate a new future.
I deeply and passionately believe in ASI’s ability to listen, refl ect, respond and further transform itself to make even more visible and
real our mission to “be a gathering place for all people to share experiences around themes of culture, migration, the environment
and the arts, informed by enduring links to Sweden.”
Now I am the mormor, witnessing and supporting my Korean/Swedish/Norwegian grandchildren as they learn about the issues of
these times at the memorial of George Floyd. They love being part of ASI, and it is my great hope that they, too, along with their
friends and peers across our city and nation, will play a part in shaping its future.
Exhibitions and Arts and Cultural Programs
(FY 2019: October 1, 2018 – September 30, 2019)
Shift: A change in focus or a deeper understanding. The American Swedish Institute’s 2019 theme, Shift, encouraged
members, visitors and guests to see something in a new light or to adjust their previous understanding, especially with the
addition of new information or a change in circumstances. Our exhibitions and programming for the year aimed to shift
perspectives and generate fresh discourse on topics such as the Vikings, Scandinavian craft and the environment.
Bruce Karstadt, President/CEO of the American
Swedish Institute, Awarded Honorary Doctorate
from Sweden’s Lund University
Bruce Karstadt, President/CEO of the American Swedish Institute since 1990, was conferred with an honorary
doctorate by Lund University in Sweden in recognition of his many years stewarding Swedish culture and Swedish-
American relations in the United States. Karstadt received the title of Doctor of Philosophy honoris causa from the
Faculty of Humanities at Sweden’s prestigious Lund University in a ceremony in Lund on May 24, 2019.
“Bruce Karstadt has spent 30 years of his life promoting and discussing Swedish culture, Swedish daily life and traditions
with an American audience, an audience that often has Swedish roots. His importance for Swedish-American relations
is signifi cant, and we are proud to have him as an honorary doctor at our Faculty,” said Professor Barbara Törnquist-
Plewa, Dean of The Faculty of Humanities.
During Karstadt’s leadership, ASI has developed into one of the leading organizations for the conservation and
promotion of Swedish culture in North America, as well as functioning as an important gathering place where diverse
people can meet to share and contrast emigrations experiences and stories from different communities. Lund University
also cited the infl uence of ASI’s exhibitions, attention to such topics as design, environmental awareness and daily life in
Sweden and Swedish America, as well as collaborations and exchanges with Swedish academics and artists, as the basis
for this honor.
Left to right: Bruce Karstadt, Helle Vandkillde (Aarhus U archaelologist) and Timothy Snyder
(Yale historian), honorary doctors
The recipients of Lund University’s honorary degrees are recognized for achievements of major importance to the
University or for society. Lund University, founded in 1666, ranks among the world’s top 100 universities.
Karstadt is also Honorary Consul General of Sweden for the State of Minnesota and was honored by HM Carl XVI
Gustaf, King of Sweden, with the insignia of the Royal Order of the Polar Star. The Swedish chapters of the Vasa Order
of America selected him as the 2018 Swedish American of the Year and the City of Uppsala also presented him with its
Gold Medal for creating a strong Sister City relationship with Minneapolis. He received the 2012 Carl Sandburg Medal
from the Swedish American Historical Society in Chicago. Karstadt is a Lindsborg, Kansas, native, a town founded by
Swedish immigrants in 1869 to which his great-grandparents immigrated in the late 1800s.
Exhibitions — A Deeper Understanding
The American Swedish Institute’s annual exhibition program featured surrealist photography with an environmental bent,
a landmark Viking exhibit and one solar-powered egg Sauna.
Imagine: Surreal Photography by Erik Johansson, January 26 – April 28, 2019
Johansson’s art bends the imagination, visualizing an impossible world where landscapes can become waterfalls and
the moon is hung each night from a ladder. He executes these ideas by layering hundreds of original photographs in a
technical jigsaw puzzle to bend perception and make the normal seem a little unhinged. Imagine was originally organized by
Sweden’s Natural History Museum to honor Erik Johansson’s receipt of the 2015 Nature Photography of the Year award,
its installation at ASI also included new works exhibited to the public for the fi rst time. All winter and into spring, visitors
to ASI examined the playful, curious and often humorous details of Johansson’s photography and its insight into humans
and the environment.
Refl ect: Solar Egg by Bigert and Bergström for Riksbyggen, March and April, 2019
Solar Egg, a fi ve-meter-tall egg sculpture sheathed in stainless, golden-colored mirror, landed in ASI’s courtyard for a brief
winter stint in 2019. Hailing from Kiruna, Sweden, the Solar Egg Sauna (yes, a fully functional sauna), was designed by
artists Mats Bigert and Lars Bergström as a piece commissioned by Riksbyggen — a housing developer in Kiruna. The
town of Kiruna is undergoing a signifi cant shift as developers and planners work to move the whole city one mile from its
current location. Concerns over mining in the area have prompted this dramatic change and the Solar Egg Sauna is meant
to serve as a conversation piece where people shed their baggage, step inside and talk about their pressing issues. Scores
of ASI members and visitors let off some stream during the egg’s residency.
Wee Thee Vikings
The Vikings Begin, May 17 – October 28, 2019
Organized by Uppsala University and its museum Gustavianum, The Vikings Begin featured dozens of early Viking age
artifacts excavated from boat graves in Sweden and the Baltic region. The Vikings Begin at ASI was one of our most
successful exhibitions ever with over 35,000 attendees during the exhibition’s four month showing. Backed by the latest
research in Viking archaeology, the exhibition helped visitors broaden their understanding of the Vikings as skilled traders
and navigators who traveled to the far-fl ung corners of the Atlantic and Middle East. In conjunction with the exhibition,
ASI hosted a variety of Viking related programming that drew in new audiences eager to learn about this popular subject.
Attendance at Viking related programs nearly doubled at more than 8,000 participants when compared to similar
programming in 2018.
Benson Gallery and Community Gallery
In 2019, ASI’s Benson gallery became the home of the updated Youth and Family space. Beginning with The Vikings
Begin exhibition, ASI installed Wee Thee Vikings, a Viking village themed play area featuring a Viking boat, longhouse
and story time nook. Local Minnesota artists Lauren Emmons and Brendan Grant helped to bring the space to life with
vivid illustrations and hand-carved details. ASI’s Community Gallery also featured the works of Minnesota artists such as
contestant fi nalists in the 2019 Arts North competition and Minnesota clay artists, Lisa Truax, Kip O’Krongly and Ursula
Hargens in the Climate + Clay exhibition.
“I recently spent the day at the Turnblad Mansion, part of the American Swedish Institute
in Minneapolis. Looking through the mansion again and being able to see the new Vikings
exhibition caused a chain reaction of curiosity, intrigue and fascination with my own family
history...” — Instagram, from Gretchen Reese on May 29, 2019.
American Swedish Institute Collections
The American Swedish Institute and its members are entrusted with the care of the historic Turnblad Mansion and our
library, archives and collections. In 1971, the iconic Mansion was the fi rst in Minneapolis to be placed on the National
Register of Historic Places.
Stewardship of the Mansion
In 2019, ASI received a Legacy Grant from the Minnesota Historical Society which allowed us to proceed in drafting
construction documents for preservation work and restoration of ASI’s historic Turnblad Mansion and Carriage house.
With these initial designs and estimates, ASI ascertained the scope and cost of needed Mansion preservation work and
improvements. In tandem with our project partner HGA architects, ASI has monitored problem areas in our historic
structures and evaluated concept designs for renovations. In 2020, more information about the scope of this work and
how it relates to a new visitor experience at ASI will be announced. With all this planning, ASI is focusing on how this
project can benefi t our community in the most impactful way, cementing our status as a cultural and craft epicenter that
brings people together.
Norse Saga Room
In a generous gift from the Carlson Holdings and the Carlson Family Foundation, ASI received the Norse Saga Room, a
Viking revival themed interior with spectacular woodcarvings designed by Norwegian artist Gerhard Munthe and carved
by Johan Borgersen. The room was commissioned for the Stockholm apartment of a prominent Swedish businessman in
1912 and was later purchased by Curtis Carlson for his company’s headquarters in 1986. The relief carvings and furniture
evoke Norse gods and myths emulating Viking era art with some Art Nouveau inspiration. The Norse Saga Room is on
display at ASI in the Wallenberg Reading room.
ASI Collections
ASI applied for and was awarded a grant by the Institute for Museum and Library Services (IMLS) to signifi cantly reprocess
and catalog the archival collection. ASI’s archives are housed in the lower level of the Turnblad Mansion and include
records relating to ASI’s institutional history and materials that illustrate the history of Swedish life in the Twin Cities and
Minnesota. With this grant, ASI will be able to make the archival collection more accessible for outside researchers and
ensure that the collection is structured in a manner that meets current best archival practices. Work on this IMLS grant
funded project is ongoing and will conclude in the summer of 2021.
2019 Collections Stats
The Garrison Ceramics Collection, an assemblage of 76 pieces of contemporary Scandinavian ceramics collected by Sid
and Terry Garrison, was an ASI acquisition made possible by a donation from Karin Larson. ASI was honored to receive
a collection of books donated by a relative of Vilhelm Moberg. These books written by Moberg were signed, inscribed
and sent by Moberg to his family in America.
Our Neighborhood
The American Swedish Institute continues to engage families in our Phillips West neighborhood through The Pippi Project
at Andersen and Bancroft Elementary Schools, Story Swap at Wellstone International High School and two PICA/Head
Start programs within walking distance of ASI. Participants share cultural stories and experiences that deepen understanding
across different cultures and generations.
National Night Out, hosted by ASI
Approximately 1,300 people gathered along 27th Street between Park and Portland Avenues, including ASI’s parking
lot and festival grounds for National Night Out in August. This neighborhood event is organized by the Phillips West
Neighborhood Organization and is one of the largest National Night Out gatherings in the nation. Many local businesses
and organizations participated including Abbott Northwestern Hospital and Children’s Minnesota Hospital. ASI was lucky
to have Molly Sanford develop a special internship project to support ASI’s mission and activate our National Night Out
experience with a public art piece. This piece prompted individuals to explore on the theme The Idea of Migration and the
Migration of Ideas.
Phillips Wellness 55+ Exercise Group
Vital Aging Network launched a program of community-based wellness initiatives led by self-directed teams of people
aged 50 and older in four Minnesota communities including the Phillips West neighborhood in Minneapolis. Many
members of the Phillips team live in Ebenezer properties and have been engaged with ASI through handcraft and
exhibition programs. Through discussions with our Phillips Wellness 55+ neighbors, ASI was able to support their health
goals through hosting Friday morning exercise sessions.
Cultural Programming
The American Swedish Institute offers a wide variety of cultural programming opportunities for all ages, including language
courses and Nordic Handcraft and Nordic Table workshops, author events, Svenska Skolan, the Lucia Choir and heritage
festivals like Midsommar. These programs help make ASI a vibrant cultural center that connects locally and engages globally
with offerings that promote a greater understanding of culture, migration, heritage and identity.
Viking Day Camp
Students became Vikings for a day at Viking Day Camp. The youngest Viking enthusiasts explored the mysteries of rune
stones, learned about Scandinavian geography and made Viking-themed, take-home crafts. Other Day Camp topics
included Pippi Longstocking and handcraft.
Viking University Day
ASI welcomed some of the world’s foremost Viking experts in two, one-of-a-kind symposiums that shared information
about Viking era history and archaeology. Two of the featured speakers, Neil Price and Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson,
were key members of the research team that created The Vikings Begin exhibition and contributed to its intellectual
underpinnings. Individual lecture topics ranged from Viking boat burials to the “real” people of the Viking age and
women in Viking age society. The two Viking University Days sold out, with approximately 500 people in attendance.
American Swedish Institute Class, Workshop and Programs Catalog
To keep up with increased demand, ASI produced a new Catalog that promotes the numerous classes and workshops
being offered. The Catalog is sent to members and patrons interested in any of ASI’s class and program offerings. To sign
Summer Lawn Parties
Summer revelers fl ocked to the Mansion grounds for a series of new Lawn Parties with specialty Viking-themed activities.
Members and guests enjoyed unique food and drink offerings by FIKA, listened to live local music, partook in Viking-era
craft demonstrations and watched a Viking-themed fi lm on the lawn.
“Had the pleasure of attending an event at the American Swedish Institute yesterday.
I’ve always loved the Turnblad mansion and questioned how the contemporary museum
addition would complement the mansion. As a whole, ASI is a glimpse into the last century
of Swedish life and current Scandinavian style. I was mesmerized by the ease of the fl ow
of the great design.” — Chuck Hannema
“I’ve been a regular attendee at the American Swedish Institute since before I can remember.
I’m a co-member now with my grandmother and going to the events and taking
I learn something new about Swedish and Swedish-American culture...” — Kiersten Shea
