Cultural Programming
The American Swedish Institute offers a wide variety of cultural programming opportunities for all ages, including language
courses and Nordic Handcraft and Nordic Table workshops, author events, Svenska Skolan, the Lucia Choir and heritage
festivals like Midsommar. These programs help make ASI a vibrant cultural center that connects locally and engages globally
with offerings that promote a greater understanding of culture, migration, heritage and identity.
Viking Day Camp
Students became Vikings for a day at Viking Day Camp. The youngest Viking enthusiasts explored the mysteries of rune
stones, learned about Scandinavian geography and made Viking-themed, take-home crafts. Other Day Camp topics
included Pippi Longstocking and handcraft.
Viking University Day
ASI welcomed some of the world’s foremost Viking experts in two, one-of-a-kind symposiums that shared information
about Viking era history and archaeology. Two of the featured speakers, Neil Price and Charlotte Hedenstierna-Jonson,
were key members of the research team that created The Vikings Begin exhibition and contributed to its intellectual
underpinnings. Individual lecture topics ranged from Viking boat burials to the “real” people of the Viking age and
women in Viking age society. The two Viking University Days sold out, with approximately 500 people in attendance.
American Swedish Institute Class, Workshop and Programs Catalog
To keep up with increased demand, ASI produced a new Catalog that promotes the numerous classes and workshops
being offered. The Catalog is sent to members and patrons interested in any of ASI’s class and program offerings. To sign
up, send an email to info@asimn.org with “Catalog” in the subject fi eld.
Viking Summer Day Camp
Summer Lawn Parties
Summer revelers fl ocked to the Mansion grounds for a series of new Lawn Parties with specialty Viking-themed activities.
Members and guests enjoyed unique food and drink offerings by FIKA, listened to live local music, partook in Viking-era
craft demonstrations and watched a Viking-themed fi lm on the lawn.
“Had the pleasure of attending an event at the American Swedish Institute yesterday.
I’ve always loved the Turnblad mansion and questioned how the contemporary museum
addition would complement the mansion. As a whole, ASI is a glimpse into the last century
of Swedish life and current Scandinavian style. I was mesmerized by the ease of the fl ow
of the great design.” — Chuck Hannema
