St Mary Redcliffe
The Eucharist in a time of Covid-19 for
Ordinary Time
CHANGES TO THE SERVICE
You are invited to gather together the following things so that this Eucharist is as
participative as possible:
- a cross
- three nightlights or other candles (and match or similar)
- a plate with a piece of bread or a cracker on it
- a glass
- a jug with wine in
- a jug with some water in
There are some changes to the words of this service to recognise that we are now in
Ordinary Time: the season that stretches from Pentecost through to Christ the King. During
that time there are some Sundays when we would usually use special words (propers) and on
those Sundays those words will be used within this order of service as appropriate.
There are two hymns in the service and each week we will send out the hymns along with the
readings and the collect for the week. These are sent out on a weekly email newsletter called
“From the Vicar’s Desk” and if you don’t get that already, you can sign up at
http://bit.ly/SMRInfoForm or ring 03301 594919 for further assistance. That sheet will also
be made available on the website each week.
THE EUCHARIST
At the Preparation of the Table for the Eucharist you are invited to place the bread or cracker
near you, then take the glass and pour in some of the wine and a drop of water. The bread
(cracker) stands for all the work we do together; the wine stands for all the good times we
have and the tear drop of water stands for the sad time we have. Together, the bread and
wine represent all that we do and all that we are: and we believe that if we offer all that to
God, we will receive back all that God can offer to us in the body and blood of Christ.
Whether, thanks to the internet, the prayers of the people scattered across a city led by a
presiding minister in church are able to actually consecrate what you have with you at home,
is a matter for some serious discussion! However, eating and drinking together has always
been seen as an act of fellowship and solidarity: so, separated by distance, we can at least
eat at the same time in remembrance of Christ.

PREPARATION OF THE TABLE
As the priest says the following prayer place the bread or cracker near you, then take the
glass and pour in some of the wine and a drop of water.
As the grain once scattered in the fields
and the grapes once dispersed on the hillside
are now reunited on this table in bread and wine,
so, Lord, may this Church soon be gathered again around this table
and your whole Church gathered from the corners of the earth into your kingdom.
Amen.
THE EUCHARISTIC PRAYER
The Lord is here.
His Spirit is with us.
Lift up your hearts.
We lift them to the Lord.
Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
It is right to give thanks and praise.
Blessed are you, Lord God,
our light and our salvation;
to you be glory and praise for ever.
From the beginning you have created all things
and all your works echo the silent music of your praise.
In the fullness of time you made us in your image,
the crown of all creation.
You give us breath and speech, that with angels and archangels
and all the powers of heaven
we may find a voice to sing your praise:
Holy, holy, holy Lord,
God of power and might,
heaven and earth are full of your glory.
Hosanna in the highest.
How wonderful the work of your hands, O Lord.
As a mother tenderly gathers her children,
you embraced a people as your own.
When they turned away and rebelled
your love remained steadfast.
From them you raised up Jesus our Saviour, born of Mary,
to be the living bread,
in whom all our hungers are satisfied.
7 | P a g e

He offered his life for sinners,
and with a love stronger than death
he opened wide his arms on the cross.
On the night before he died,
he came to supper with his friends
and, taking bread, he gave you thanks.
He broke it and gave it to them, saying:
Take, eat; this is my body which is given for you;
do this in remembrance of me.
At the end of supper, taking the cup of wine,
he gave you thanks, and said:
Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant,
which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.
Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.
Christ has died:
Christ is risen:
Christ will come again.
Father, we plead with confidence
his sacrifice made once for all upon the cross;
we remember his dying and rising in glory,
and we rejoice that he intercedes for us at your right hand.
Pour out your Holy Spirit as we bring before you
these gifts of your creation;
may they be for us the body and blood of your dear Son.
As these holy things are consumed in your presence,
form us in the likeness of Christ,
and build us into a living temple to your glory.
Remember, Lord, your Church in every land.
Reveal her unity, guard her faith,
and preserve her in peace.
Bring us at the last with [N and] all the saints
to the vision of that eternal splendour
for which you have created us;
through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
by whom, with whom, and in whom,
with all who stand before you in earth and heaven,
we worship you, Father almighty, in songs of everlasting praise:
Blessing and honour and glory and power
be yours for ever and ever.
Amen.
8 | P a g e

THE LORD’S PRAYER
Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour has taught us:
Our Father,
who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name;
thy kingdom come;
thy will be done;
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation;
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
the power and the glory,
for ever and ever.
Amen.
BREAKING OF THE BREAD
We break this bread
to show that we are sharing together as the body of Christ.
Though we are many, and in many places, we are one body,
because we have, and we shall again, share in one bread.
GIVING OF COMMUNION
Whist the priest receives the bread and wine, you are encouraged to eat and drink what you
have in front of you. If there are others with you, you might like to share that together, but
please do so in accordance with Public Health guidelines.
COMMUNION SONG OR ANTHEM
As we share in food and drink together a song or anthem may be played.
9 | P a g e

PRAYERS AFTER COMMUNION
The priest says the post-communion collect which can be found on the weekly sheet.
We then say together
Father of all,
we give you thanks and praise,
that when we were still far off
you met us in your Son and brought us home.
Dying and living, he declared your love,
gave us grace, and opened the gate of glory.
May we who have shared Christ's body live his risen life;
we who have drunk his cup bring life to others;
we whom the Spirit lights give light to the world.
Keep us firm in the hope you have set before us,
so we and all your children shall be free,
and the whole earth live to praise your name;
through Christ our Lord. Amen.
PRAYER FOR THE CORONAVIRUS OUTBREAK
Keep us, good Lord,
under the shadow of your mercy
in this time of uncertainty and distress.
Sustain and support the anxious and fearful,
and lift up all who are brought low;
that we may rejoice in your comfort
knowing that nothing can separate us from your love
in Christ Jesus our Lord. Amen.
