Christinaco-founded the Masconomet EducationFoundation. Working withthe foundation, Christina usedher fundraising skills to raise over$400,000 to fund the constructionof new STEAM labs in theMasco middle and high schools.Letter to the editorI am a member of the graduatingclass of 2020 from MasconometHigh School and myclassmates and I have directlybenefited from Christina’s work.Access to new STEAM labs hasallowed my classmates and Ito explore new interests. Theselabs have enabled students tofurther their interests in differentfields that they otherwisewould not have the opportunityto experience without the newSTEAM labs.Christina has very well thoughtout ideas and strategies for improvingschools in our district.She understands that a good educationis essential to the future ofa student but for the future of thisdistrict. Peter St. Clair, DMDThe Golden Years are muchmore golden if your teeth arein good shape. One of the mostdifficult areas dentists have to addressare issues concerning agingpatients, specifically those whorequire assisted or nursing care.Whether you are the one makingdecisions for someone else,or you are making your owndecisions, regular dental maintenancevisits are the key to successwith your teeth as you age. Dentalhealth needs to stay at the topof the priority list for many reasons;quality of life and the linkbetween oral health and systemichealth are two big ones.It's not uncommon for an olderpatient to say, "I don't need to fixthat. How much longer do I reallyhave to live?" And the responseis usually the same every time, "Ifyou told me that you knew youweren't going to be around nextyear, I'd say I would agree withyou.....but you've been sayingthe same thing for 15 years." Youcan't predict the future. Whatyou can do now is decide howhealthy you want your mouth tobe now to enjoy. It only involvesa choice.When an elderly patient hasa multitude of dental issues thefollowing should be considered:* What is the general health status?* What is the general prognosismedically?* Has the patient ever wornanything removable in theirmouth?* What is the minimal amountof dentistry that can be done thatwill not alter the patient's qualityof life?* What are other treatment optionsto maintain or improve thepatient's quality of life?The general health status of thepatient can play a role in decidinghow to approach a patient's dentalcare. People who are medicallycompromised but are well controlledare usually okay to receivegeneral dental care. If a person is ingood physical and mental shape,it's difficult to use age as a determiningfactor for dental care.The most important factor thatneeds to be considered is qualityof life. Studies have shown thatloss of teeth results in a loss inquality of life. While some patientswith dentures may saythey can eat anything, many otherswould pay anything to havetheir teeth back. Masticatingfood properly for digestion andnot having plastic in your mouthto disrupt the flavor of food, aretwo great reasons to keep yourteeth. There is no one who couldargue that eating with false teethis as enjoyable as eating with realteeth.If you have never worn anythingremovable in your mouth,it tends to get more difficult toadapt to the older you get. Denturescan be difficult to adjust to.There are definitely better techniquesand materials than othersthat can impact fit and function,but it's still a piece of plastic inyour mouth. Poorly fitting denturescan impact a patient's nutritionalintake and can be a seriousissue for an older person.The best way to avoid having todeal with major issues as you getolder is to make sure you take careof your teeth along the journeyof life.
