Heavy rainfalls
affect Trail
roadways
City crews and equipment have
been deployed throughout the City of
Trail to clean up after last week’s heavy
wind and rainfall. The Public Works
crew appreciates everyone’s patience
as they work through the areas that
have been impacted. The city has identified
the following areas for clean up.
Fallen trees in West Trail
Localized flooding due to clogging
of catch basin grates (cleared)
Sand and gravel on roadways
Alley flooding in East Trail
Washouts in West Trail, mainly on
Munter and Topping Street
City crews are also preparing for
more rain that is currently in the
short term forecast. We encourage you
to contact us if you come across any
other areas that may require attention.
Please call 250-364-0840 or email
EMERGENCY COMMUNITY SUPPORT
FUND: CFNKLS is thrilled to announce
that applications are now available for the
Emergency Community Support Fund.
This is a $350 million emergency funding
program from the Government of Canada,
designed to help Canada’s more vulnerable
populations during the Covid-19 pandemic.
The global crisis has left no community untouched,
and it is having a disproportionate
impact on vulnerable Canadians who are
less equipped to deal with its health, social
and economic impacts. The area that
CFNKLS serves has been allocated $8000
in funding. Applications and information on
the Fund are available at:
www.communityfoundations.ca/initiatives/
emergency-communitysupport-fund Applicants
will have
project proposals that support vulnerable
populations that have been affected by
Covid-19, with their physical and mental
health needs. July 27 is the deadline for
distribution of funds, and projects should be
completed by March 31, 2021.
Would your acreage benefit from soil amendment?
Mercer Celgar is looking for landowners with 2 or more acres within 55 km
that would benefit from using their Celgrow soil amendment. Pastures and
hay fields are good options.
Mercer Celgar will cover the costs of a Qualified Professional performing
soil sampling, obtaining government authorization and delivery costs of Celgrow
soil amendment based on access with a large truck/pup combination.
Acreage should be able to accommodate at least 6 truck/pup loads. The two
major components of Celgrow are individual wood fibres lost from the pulping
process and surplus bacteria from the wastewater biological treatment
facility. Wood fibres enhance soil moisture retention and bacteria are a good
source of soil nutrients. The landowner is responsible for spreading and incorporating
Celgrow into their soil.
Open burning allowed
Effective June 18, 2020, the following amendments have
been made to both Category 2 and Category 3 open burning
prohibitions within the Southeast Fire Centre’s jurisdiction.
Given consideration to weather patterns and time of year,
the BCWS has identified a brief window to temporarily allow
category 2 open burning throughout the entire Southeast Fire
Centre and category 3 open burning to be allowed in specified
areas.
Category 2 open burning will be temporarily allowed
throughout the Southeast Fire Centre’s jurisdiction. Category
2 open burns include:
• one or two concurrently burning piles no larger than two
metres high by three metres wide;
Reminders About Category 2 Open Burning:
Anyone planning to conduct category 2 open burning,
should always check the ventilation index, follow the open
burning smoke control regulations and practice safe burning.
Create a fireguard around the planned fire site by clearing
away twigs, grass, leaves and other combustible material.
Have an adequate source of pressurized water on hand. Never
leave a fire unattended and make sure the fire is fully extinguished
with ashes cold to the touch before leaving the area
for any length of time.
More locally-raised meat
will be available in the
Kootenays
New Democrat MLA Michelle Mungall says that more people
will have access to locally-raised meat in the Kootenays
thanks to changes made by the province.
The updated Meat Inspection Regulation now allows Class
D licences in Electoral Area D of the Regional District of
Central Kootenay, as well as areas of the Alberni Valley and
the Fraser-Fort George region, and encourages the growing
“farm-to-fork” trend in many BC communities. Class D
licence holders are permitted to conduct the on-farm slaughter
of up to 25 animal units for direct sale to consumers or
retail outlets like restaurants and meat shops in the region
where the meat was slaughtered.
Nelson Innovation Centre
wants to showcase local art!
Nelson Innovation Centre (NiC), opening summer 2020,
is a true community hub: a place for tech and tech-enabled
entrepreneurs and businesses to connect with one another
and get the support they need through programming and
referral services to take their businesses to a new level. Help
us bring the space to life!
This is a call-out to West Kootenay artists to apply to have
their art showcased at the Nelson Innovation Centre.
As the first innovation centre of its kind in the West Kootenay,
we want to support local arts & culture first. The intersection
of art and technology is a reminder of the importance
of creativity when making technological advances that unite
communities and drive forth innovation.
Art will be changed quarterly at NiC and a 10% commission
will be charged for any sales of artwork. As a not-for-profit
organization, commission funds will go back into us supporting
the Kootenay tech community.
To apply, please email the NiC Manager, Karen Kornelsen,
at karen@kast.com. Tell us a bit about yourself, where you’re
located and include a link to your portfolio. Existing work that
explores the intersection of art, tech and science is encouraged,
but not required.
The KAST Team
Looking for an alternative to
your home office?
NiC (the Nelson Innovation Centre), is a flexible workhub
located in Nelson’s historic CP Railway Station; it is a place
where people can get work done on their laptops, meet with
clients, network and collaborate on projects. The lounge area
functions as an event space with a high-tech projector, sound
system and more.
NiC features a state-of-the-art boardroom for the delivery
of technology training and workshops, a custom soundproof
private workbooth for video conferencing as well as rentable
office space for tech and tech-enabled companies.
NiC serves tech companies, innovators and professionals in
the West Kootenay, from Nelson to Kaslo, Salmo to the Slocan
Valley and Castlegar to Trail and Rossland. Our community
hub also serves the entire Kootenays with virtual concierge
supports for the 16,000 small businesses across the region.
Managed by the Kootenay Association for Science & Technology
(KAST), NiC is a culmination of years of hard work
by Nelson’s business and technology community. The project
has come to life as a partnership between KAST, the City of
Nelson, Community Futures Central Kootenay, the Nelson &
District Chamber of Commerce, community stakeholders and
local industry.
SUDOKU
Sudoku puzzles are formatted as a 9x9 grid,
broken down into nine 3x3 boxes. To solve
a sudoku, the numbers 1 through 9 must fill
each row, column and box. Each number
can appear only once in each row, column
and box. You can fi gure out the order in
which the numbers will appear by using the
numeric clues already provided in the boxes.
The more numbers you name, the easier it
gets to solve the puzzle!
Keeping Kids Safe
on the Farm
Since 2002, more than 157,000 children have participated
in Progressive Agriculture Safety Day® events in Canada. In
lieu of in-person Safety Days, both the Canadian Agricultural
Safety Association (CASA) and the Progressive Agriculture
Foundation (PAF) have made available resources for rural
children.
“Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the majority of spring
Safety Days were cancelled or postponed”, says Marcel
Hacault, the Canadian Agricultural Safety Association’s
Executive Director. “The health and safety of children, volunteers
and community members is paramount at all times,
and of course that’s never more important than during the
pandemic.”
In lieu of in-person Safety Days, both the Canadian Agricultural
Safety Association (CASA) and the Progressive Agriculture
Foundation (PAF) have made available resources for
rural children. CASA, in partnership with BASF, created a
“For Kids” resource page on casa-acsa.ca, featuring tools like
Rhubarb
Rhubarb
Rhubarb
Tis the time to harvest
that rhubarb. If you’ve been
feeling guilty looking at it
while you’ve been putting
Start in the left corner!
off doing some baking, the
easiest way in the world to
assuage rhubarb guilt (and
impress your family and friends) is to make rhubarb punch.
It’s a lovely pink colour and there are just two ingredients.
Erika Bird’s Rhubarb Punch
6 cups chopped rhubarb
3 - 3.5 litres water
1 cup white sugar
Bring to a boil in a large pot, then turn off the burner.
Cool it a bit then pour through a sieve into some jugs or jars.
While still warm add the sugar, more or less a cup in total or
to taste. Chill. Makes about 3 litres.
If you’re feeling slightly more ambitious, try my grandmother’s
pie recipe.
Violet Bird’s Rhubarb Cream Pie
1 1/2 cups white sugar
3 Tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 Tablespoon melted butter
2 beaten eggs
3 cups cut rhubarb
Fill one unbaked pie shell with raw cut rhubarb. Sprinkle
with half the sugar.
Beat the eggs with the flour, nutmeg, melted butter and
rest of the sugar. Pour over rhubarb/sugar and cover with a
lattice of pastry strips.
Bake at 450º F 10 minutes, reduce heat and bake for
another 20 minutes at 375ºF
The Progressive Agriculture Foundation
created a Daily Learning Drop
series available on Facebook and You-
Tube. A total of 68 consecutive drops
provide timely safety and health information
to teachers, parents and children
in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
PAF is also exploring additional virtual
opportunities for children to experience
a Safety Day while at home.
“Seeing the postponement of many of
our spring events, coupled with the fact
that more children would likely be helping
on the farm during spring planting
season, we took a proactive approach to
continue our mission and deliver timely,
hands-on safety and health messages,”
says Brian Kuhl, President and Chief
Executive Officer of the Progressive
Agriculture Foundation. “Our goal was
to help assist both parents and teachers
with fun activities for children, hoping
they would adopt safer practices while
at home or on the farm, to combat risky
behavior that can accompany curiosity
and boredom.”
Communities that would like to host
a Progressive Agriculture Safety Day in
2021 can apply online at www.casa-acsa.
ca/programs/safety-days-for-children/
or call CASA at 877 452 2272. The deadline
to apply is July 15, 2020.
Fund supporting
local landscape &
wildlife
Western Toads are helped by the Kootenay
Lake Local Conservation Fund, which is financially
supporting a project that is working to
increase the survivability of both adult toads
and toadlets attempting to cross the mountain
pass of Fish and Bear Lakes along Highway 31A.
Seven important conservation projects
were recently approved by the
Regional District of Central Kootenay
(RDCK) to receive funding from the
Kootenay Lake Local Conservation
Fund (KLLCF) in 2020. These projects
will benefit Areas A, D and E. Specifically,
the wildlife species that will be
helped through the KLLCF are grizzly
bears, bats and western toads. Beavers, a
species of special
concern, will
also be studied to
help begin beaver
restoration in
the region in the
future.
The KLLCF
is also contributing
to the
Central Kootenay
Invasive
Species Society’s
work of helping
address knotweed
in Areas
A, D and E, one
of the ‘world’s
100 worst invasive
species’, and
to the Kootenay
Native Plant
Society’s work
with landowners
to increase
native wildflower
populations for
native bees and
other pollinators.
The fund is also
continuing to support
critical water
monitoring taking
place on north
Kootenay Lake
by the Kootenay
Centre for Forestry
Alternatives,
which is helping
inform water
management in
the face of climate
change.
The KLLCF
was established
by the RDCK in
2014 by referendum.
Property
owners in RDCK
Electoral Areas
A, D and E pay
an annual tax of
$15 per parcel
towards this dedicated
fund, which
JOHN (JACK) MALCOLM GREENLAW
Age 81, passed away peacefully on June 8th in
Penticton, BC, with his 3 children by his side.
The son of Malcolm and Mae Greenlaw, he was
born in Kaslo, BC, on November 17, 1938 and
grew up in the upper Lardeau valley, including
the original townsite of Howser and Lardeau, BC.
Jack and Dorothy built their dream home on the
shores of Kootenay Lake at Schroeder Creek and
lived there 25 years before moving to Penticton
in 2008. Jack was married to his wife Dorothy
for 57 years before her passing in 2016. Jack
leaves behind his son Ken & daughter-in-law
Kristen Greenlaw, daughter Kristine and son-inlaw
Shaun Chamberlain, 2 grandchildren, Ayden
and Savvy Chamberlain, son Kip Greenlaw and
daughter-in-law Theresa Smith, and brother
Larry. He was predeceased by his parents and
sister Margaret Gibb.
Jack’s first full-time job was working for
Kootenay Forest Products (KFP), when he was
15. By his late teens, he was running a bull
-dozer and building roads. Jack and Dorothy
formed their own road building company in 1970,
Dorjack Contracting Ltd., which they ran for
over 20 years. His upbringing shaped his family
living in Howser, BC with large garden, prized
raspberries, and a dedication to the support of
his family and the community.
Jack was an amazing father, grandfather,
companion, and friend. He loved fishing, golfing,
and wintering in the southern USA. Their
winter road trips always took them
through Nevada and the bright lights
of Las Vegas. His favourite pastime
was golfing with family and friends.
Over the years he amassed 3
hole-in-ones; his last
round was with Kip
on April 22nd.
Rhubarb Rhubarb Rhubarb
Tis the time to harvest that rhubarb. If you’ve been feeling
guilty looking at it while you’ve been putting off doing
some baking, the easiest way in the world to assuage rhubarb
guilt (and impress your family and friends) is to make rhubarb
punch. It’s a lovely pink colour and there are just two
ingredients.
Erika Bird’s Rhubarb Punch
6 cups chopped rhubarb
3 - 3.5 litres water
1 cup white sugar
Bring to a boil in a large pot, then turn off the burner.
Cool it a bit then pour through a sieve into some jugs or jars.
While still warm add the sugar, more or less a cup in total or
to taste. Chill. Makes about 3 litres.
If you’re feeling slightly more ambitious, try my grandmother’s
pie recipe.
Violet Bird’s Rhubarb Cream Pie
1 1/2 cups white sugar
3 Tablespoons flour
1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
1 Tablespoon melted butter
2 beaten eggs
3 cups cut rhubarb
Fill one unbaked pie shell with raw cut rhubarb. Sprinkle
with half the sugar.
Beat the eggs with the flour, nutmeg, melted butter and
rest of the sugar. Pour over rhubarb/sugar and cover with a
lattice of pastry strips.
What About B.O.B?
New exhibit opens at
ViewPoint Gallery
ViewPoint Art Gallery features established and emerging
and artists from the Kootenay region. Currently the gallery
has over 60 artists and artisans on two floors of gallery space
overlooking beautiful Kootenay Lake.
The ViewPoint opened its doors last year May 9 and unfortunately
had to close on March 16 due to COVID-19. During
that time the gallery worked on getting all artists’ work up
online and launched the Gallery Shop on May 1. The scheduled
Artists Demonstration took place virtually on social
media in order to keep people connected to art.
Each year the gallery gives back to the community through
art and this year ViewPoint launched the Art for Food campaign.
Artists donated over $6,500 worth of art and the gallery
covered costs so 100% of funds from the sale go to food
banks in the Kootenay region.
The gallery goes a step further in trying to connect people
to art by hosting free exhibitions. The first exhibition this
summer is What About B.O.B? Artists Bridging the Community
Together. Featuring Nelson’s celebrated orange bridge as a
theme, and 18 artists sharing their work and their connection
to the City of Nelson, the exhibition runs July 3 till August 2.
Following safety protocol What About B.O.B will be outdoors
and has also been adapted to be virtual at viewpointartgallery.com
for those art lovers who cannot travel to see it.
ViewPoint is working hard to keep Kootenay Art accessible
during these trying times.“We are less lonely when we connect.
Art is connection.”– Nikki Giovanni
Swimming at Salmo Pool
spells summer
At a meeting on Friday, June 12 the Salmo and District Recreation
Commission voted to open the outdoor Salmo pool.
The target date to open is July 6, 2020.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic and to ensure the safety
of all stakeholders while providing an enjoyable recreation
opportunity, a new set of rules and regulations will be established
for all users of the swimming facility.
“We are happy to be able to provide this outdoor recreation
opportunity for the residents of Salmo and Area G,” said
Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) Recreation
Commission Chair Diana Lockwood. “We know that it will
not be the same as in the past, but be assured that it will be
done in a manner to ensure the safety of our staff and the
public. We are doing our best to maximize the amount of time
for our residents use, while being safe.”
Details on the hours of operations and the rules and regulations
will be provided soon.
RDCK announces change to
commercial recycling
The Regional District of Central Kootenay (RDCK) is moving
to a new recycling program in partnership with Recycle
BC that will impact recycling for the Industrial, Commercial,
and Institutional (ICI) sector across the district. Recycle BC is
a stewardship program responsible for residential packaging
and printed paper. ICI recycling and non-packaging material
are not accepted in the Recycle BC system.
In the new partnership, the RDCK is responsible for the
collection of acceptable recyclables which are then hauled,
processed and marketed by Recycle BC. Recycle BC is funded
by producers of packaging and printed paper intended for the
residential market. Producers of products intended for the ICI
market do not financially contribute to the program; therefore,
Recycle BC considers ICI recyclables as contamination.
The BC Recycling Regulation does not address ICI recyclables,
thus these materials do not currently fall under the
mandate of a stewardship program. The current recycling
market creates high costs and challenges for private recycling
programs.
ICI recycling was previously accepted at all RDCK depots,
under the new program ICI recycling will:
• Only accept flattened cardboard
• Only accepted at the Ootischenia, Crescent Valley, New
Denver, Nakusp, Nelson (Lakeside) and Creston depots
• Only available during set hours of depot operation
Businesses that produce high volumes of other recyclable
material are encouraged to reach out to private collectors. The
new program is set to launch throughout the district, starting
in mid-June through August.
BC Wildfire Service launches
wildfire app
The official BC Wildfire Service mobile app is now available,
providing real-time wildfire information and an interactive
map that users can customize to display a variety of
fire-related data.
The new app is one of many proactive initiatives undertaken
by the BC Wildfire Service to give members of the public,
media and stakeholders access to consistent, accurate and
timely wildfire information throughout the province. This
app complements the BC Wildfire Service’s website and social
media channels.
Key features of the mobile app include:
1. Wildfire map showing: current fire danger ratings, active
fires, fires that have been declared “out”, open burning prohibitions
(including campfire bans), evacuation alerts and
evacuation orders, area restrictions, BC Parks closures and
recreation site closures, Drive BC events (e.g., advisories and
closures) and more.
2. Latest news and advisories
The BC Wildfire Service mobile app allows users to view the
latest informational tweets directly from the BC Wildfire Service’s
Twitter feed. A personal Twitter account is not required
to view this feed. The latest advisories (related to open burning
bans and prohibitions, area restrictions, evacuation alerts
and evacuation orders) are also available on the app.
3. Statistics
4. Fire reporting tool
The app features a “Report a Fire” function that will automatically
generate map co-ordinates of your current location.
Provincial Wildfire Reporting Centre staff will ask for these
co-ordinates when the user reports a wildfire. This feature
also indicates what sort of questions a person may be asked
when reporting a wildfire.
The BC Wildfire Service mobile app is available for Apple
(iOS) and Android devices and is free to download in the App
Store and Google Play.
For further details about the BC Wildfire Service mobile
app, refer to the online reference guide: http://ow.ly/
evacuation alerts, evacuation orders and more,
ArtWalk 2020
goes virtual
The Nelson & District Arts Council is proud to present
the 32nd annual ArtWalk! With over 40 artists and 20+
businesses onboard it will be an ArtWalk to remember.
We are hosting an opening night live streaming event
on Friday, June 26th from 6 to 9pm, which will be free of
charge and open to everyone. The Arts Council will be
hosting the event via Zoom as well as on Facebook live.
The event will feature Melody Diachun and Doug Stevenson
(taking jazz requests), The Dancing Legs, Onezie
Parade and dose. All this will be hosted by Lucas Myers. All
performers will be coming to you from their living rooms
or an otherwise safe location.
Providing ArtWalk in this capacity allows for local performance
artists to continue to be paid for their work in a
climate where almost all summer performance opportunities
have been cancelled.
The Nelson and District Arts Council has worked hard
to be proactive during the COVID-19 health crisis and
have developed a way to support the visual arts community
while keeping everyone safe. A digital gallery platform
will be open for viewing all the individual artist’s art on the
NDAC website. The Arts Council has also kept the tradition
of collaborating with the local business community, with
businesses promoting specific artists on their social media
accounts in lieu of physically being able to hang artwork in
their establishments. All links will connect to our ArtWalk
gallery where patrons can directly connect with the artists
to make their artwork purchases. Another change for this
year: 100% of art sales will go directly to the artists.
The arts community has been drastically affected during
this time and the Arts Council wants to provide as much
support as possible. ArtWalk has a wonderful reputation as
one of the best events of the summer… it might look different
but will still focus directly on showcasing our local
performance and visual artists.
resulted in many
changes. You
might feel like you’re no longer in control of things. It is normal
to feel sad, stressed, confused, scared or worried. People
react in different ways. Some common feelings include:
• a sense of being socially excluded or judged
• concern about your children’s education and well-being
• fear of getting sick with COVID-19 or of making others sick
• worry about losing your job, not being able to work or
finances
• fear of being apart from loved ones due to isolation or physical
distancing
• helplessness, boredom, loneliness and depression due to
