PET SAFETY IN THE SUMMER
Every summer, veterinary clinics can set calendars by the number of
heat related emergencies seen. The variety of symptoms runs from
dehydration, to heat exhaustion to shock to even death.
In many areas of the country, temperatures reach the hundred-degree
mark on a daily basis and heat stroke is a common occurrence. Regular as
clockwork, dogs are brought in because the owner was going to run into
the store for just a minute, got to talking to someone and thirty minutes
or more pass. In just minutes, a closed car can reach temps of 120-140
F. A common misconception is that a cracked window is going to make
a difference. Take the test yourself. Let the dog out of the car, roll down
the window 2 inches and YOU set in there for 30 or so minutes with the
engine off. Always remember, you have the option of getting out, your
dog doesn’t.
Another common problem seen with dogs in the summer, are the
owners that like to let their dogs ride in the back of a truck. The number of
instances where dogs have fallen out or been dragged behind a vehicle
are staggering. If the results of falling out at 70 MPH weren’t enough, get
a piece of sheet metal, set it out in the yard on a hot, sunshiny day and lay
on it for several hours. Rolling every once in a while to get the full effect
of course. Burns to skin and the pads of feet are very common in dogs left
to ride shotgun.
Animals tied up to trees, trailers and posts are also high risk. In this
scenario, dogs are not the only ones at risk. Owners often tie up horses,
goats, lambs, ponies and all types of livestock never making sure that
there is nothing the pet can get tangled up on. Never realizing, tangled
ropes or chains make it impossible to reach shade or water.
The natural tendencies of cats are to be self-sufficient. As long as they
have shade and a fresh water supply, they can take care of themselves.
It is when owners want to take them places or try to put them in cages
outside, problems occur. There are many who will scoff at the idea of
having cats in cages, don’t, it happens.
Make sure if your pet is outside in the summer heat that there is plenty
of shade and water!
SUN SAFETY TIPS FOR CAMPERS
A few, easy sun protection measures can help all campers, counselors
and staff avoid any immediate or long-term effects of sun exposure.
• Use sunscreen with an SPF of at least 15 on all exposed skin, including
the lips, daily even on cloudy days; apply sunscreen about 20 minutes
before being exposed to the sun; reapply sunscreen frequently (at least
twice a day) and thoroughly.
• Stay away from the sun in the middle of the day. Schedule outdoor
activities before 10 AM and after 4 PM.
• Encourage everyone to wear a wide-brim hat.
• Try to wear clothes that protect your skin (ideally long-sleeve shirts and
long pants) and sunglasses.
• Practice the “shadow rule” - seek shade when your shadow is shorter
than you are tall.
• Speak out: talk to your family and friends about sun protection.
• Be especially careful if you have fair skin, freckles or numerous moles;
blond, red or light-brown hair; blue, green or gray eyes; a tendency to
burn easily and to tan little or not at all and a family history of skin cancer.
There is no quick cure for minor sunburn. But wet compresses, tub baths
and soothing lotions may provide some relief.
KATY ISD APPOINTS TWO NEW PRINCIPALS
FOR 2020-21 ACADEMIC YEAR
During tonight’s Katy Independent School District Board of Trustees
meeting, Trustees confirmed the appointment of two new leaders for
Shafer and Bear Creek elementary schools. Stephanie McElroy has been
named the principal of Bear Creek Elementary and Shannon Smith was
announced as the new principal for Shafer Elementary. Both individuals
will begin their new leadership roles in the upcoming weeks.
Ms. Stephanie McElroy began
her teaching career in Katy
ISD in 1998 as a fifth grade
teacher where she taught
Reading. In 2006, Ms. McElroy
made a career move to Sealy
Independent School District to
become a high school assistant
principal at Selman Intermediate
School. Shortly afterwards, her
leadership skills and love for
education lead her to become
the principal at that same school.
In 2009, Ms. McElroy continued
her administrative duties, this
time as the Associate Principal of
Curriculum and Development for
Fort Bend Independent School
District at Sartartia Middle
School. She remained there until
2015. At that time, she became the principal at Navarro Middle
School in the Lamar Consolidated School District. Ms. McElroy
received her Bachelor’s Degree from Sam Houston State University
and her Master’s Degree from University of Houston in Clear Lake.
Ms. Shannon Smith began her
teaching career at Berry Middle
School in 2005 in Mesquite,
Texas. In 2009, she became the
Testing Coordinator at the same
campus. A year later, Smith was
named the Assistant Principal
at Sherman High School in
Sherman, Texas. She remained
in that position until 2012, when
she relocated to the Cypress
Fairbanks Independent School
District, where she returned
to teaching. In 2015, Smith
joined Katy ISD to take on the
role of Assistant Principal at
Exley Elementary. Three years
later, Smith joined the Taylor
Mustangs as their assistant principal. Ms. Smith received her Bachelor’s
degree from Texas Tech University and her Master’s Degree from Texas
A&M Commerce.
KATY ISD EDUCATION FOUNDATION ANNOUNCES TEACHER GRANT RECIPIENTS -
MILESTONE $2 MILLION GIVEN IN EIGHT YEARS WITH $348,087 AWARDED THIS YEAR
The Katy ISD Education Foundation recently announced its eighth year of Inspiring Imagination teacher grant recipients. Thanks to the faithful giving
of its investors and broad-based community support, the Foundation kept its promise to a record number of teacher grant applicants. More than 350
Katy ISD teachers at 44 different campuses were awarded teacher grants this year. Grant activities range from fine motor skill equipment to swine
lungs and medical mannequins and extend to all subjects and grade levels. Funding will be provided for the 2020-2021 school year.
The Foundation exists to raise support for and manage its Inspiring Imagination teacher grant program, an initiative that funds innovative
classroom instruction not possible within the parameters of a school district budget. Grant funds are raised through annual pledges from business
and community investors, one-time contributions and Foundation-hosted events: Fireflies & Foodtrucks, GROOVE and Reason2Race. The Katy ISD
Education Foundation is an independent 501(c)(3) organization for which donations are tax deductible to the extent allowed by law. To learn more,
KATY ISD HONORS 2019-2020 VOLUNTEERS - DRUM ROLL PLEASE...
Katy ISD’s Volunteers in Public Schools initiative is continuing the tradition of honoring thousands of school district volunteers who donate their time
supporting Katy ISD students and teachers. “Our giant volunteer family helps make Katy ISD exceptional by providing additional support to staff and
faculty so teachers can spend their time teaching! It is our joy to celebrate the impact volunteers bring and have brought for years,” said Janet Theis,
Katy ISD Executive Director of Community Partnerships. This year, as a thank you to all Katy ISD volunteers, the district’s Partners in Education team is
virtually presenting its annual VIPS Celebration event finale featuring exceptionally talented Katy ISD drum line students. Katy ISD salutes its army of
incredible volunteers. Because of you, the beat goes on. District-wide drum line entertainment was provided by Katy ISD student percussionists from
every high school, led by Seven Lakes High School Assistant Band Director, Mr. Allen Vinson.
Volunteers in Public Schools, a Katy ISD Partners in Education program, offers moms, dads, family and community members a wide variety of volunteer
opportunities at their chosen campus. To learn more, visit Partners in Education under the “Community” tab at www.katyisd.org or contact your campus
NATIONAL CELL PHONE COURTESY MONTH
National Cell Phone Courtesy Month during July encourages us to
evaluate our cellular habits and consider others before we reach for
our phone. Our phones have become an integral part of our lives. We
schedule events organize shopping lists order birthday presents and
communicate all from this one, small device. Do we even make a phone
call any more?
Phone courtesy has always been in fashion, but when they became
smart, it seems we lost a few brain cells. National Cell Phone Courtesy
Month strives to bring polite phone usage back in style.
DOS AND DON’TS
Silent the phone whenever you’re spending time with anyone. That
includes work, a meal, meeting or with family. If you are attending a
performance of any kind, turn the phone off. There are exceptions to this
rule for medical professionals or other expectant emergency situations.
Hidden phones are forgotten phones. We pay attention to the people
in the room, the performance or the meeting. It’s also a signal to the
people we are with that they are important to us.
Step away if you do need to take a call. No one needs to hear your
conversation while trying to enjoy a meal for two.
Shhh. Monitor the volume of your voice. Even when you step away,
voices carry.
Pause before sending emails, texts or social media posts. Consider
the content, especially if it is posted in haste. Ask yourself the following
questions. Sometimes just the need to ask will be all the answer you need
before deleting the comment or text: Will I regret sending this later? Am I
angry? Will this hurt someone? Is this appropriate? Will this affect my job
or relationship?
Don’t use your phone and drive. Many states prohibit cellular use or
limit it to hands-free only. Any message can wait until you arrive at your
destination. If it truly is urgent, pull to a safe stopping area to receive the
message or call.
Don’t let your mobile device become a social hindrance. We often
look to our phone for social engagement when we don’t know what else
to do. Meet new people when you are in a new circle of people and begin
networking with the people near you. Expand your social circle face to
face and broaden the world around you.
Our phones are tools. They shouldn’t replace every social context
in our lives. Practice a little courtesy and gain improved relationships
everywhere you go. Encourage your friends and families to join you
throughout the month.
