Iam not sure when it was thatI took up fishing but I thinkit would have been when Iwas around 11 or 12 whichwould have been around theearly to mid-1960s. My first rodwas bought from a shop on AbbeyLane which may well have beenthe old Post Office. I do howeverremember the rod. It was redplastic and came in two sectionscomplete with reel, line and a fewhooks.Most weeks a few friends and Iwould head up to Graves Parkboating lake and fish withmaggots or wormsthat we had dug upin our respectivegardens. I don’tthink that wewere verysuccessful inthe greaterscheme of thingsespecially as anover-energetic castwould cause my verycheap rod to comeapart at the end of the castand launch the top part of the rodtowards the middle of the lake.If it wasn’t the rod coming apartit would be the reel coming freeof the handle and falling into thelake, to be recovered with muchembarrassment.My early forays into the world offishing confirmed a few aspects ofmy personality. I have discoveredover the years that I love anysport which involves equipment.Currently I enjoy fishing, golf andsports climbing – all of which arein many ways individual sportsbut, more importantly, are all‘gear’-related.Even now I can walk into afishing tackle shop such asAngling Direct in Dronfield andwonder in amazement at therange of equipment for the manydifferent styles of fishing. I have noidea what half of the ‘stuff’ is for oreven exactly what it does but if itlooks shiny and well-engineeredthen I am tempted to buy it.The other thing I have learnedis that I am a very patient personin the main and can sit for many ahappy hour on the side of a lakeor reservoir trying different fishingmethods and different baits – oftento no avail.To the non-enthusiastit all seems like apointless waste oftime but to me itis close to beinga meditationdiscipline. Ifthe weather isgood and theenvironmentis beautifulthen it does notmatter to me if Icatch nothing. Justsitting by the side of alake in spring, summer or autumnconcentrating on the float or thetip of the rod waiting for a fish totake an interest in the bait is anabsolute delight and it is a goodway to spend time away fromthe hustle and bustle of life andreconnect with nature.It is also a fun way to spend timewith my three grandsons who alllove to come with me althoughthe highlight of the day for them isprobably the maggot racing!The only real challenge is whereto store all the fishing, golf andclimbing equipment.
