A JOURNAL FOR YOUR DOGby Renee SchaakxsThe Dog Journal is originated from my IDTE coursefrom Turid Rugaas that I began in 2017 in theNetherlands. It started as a little notebook where Iscribbled my dogs name on the cover, with a littledrawing of a heart next to it. And it turned out to bemy end work of the course. I got the idea when Turidtold us to make a plan for our dogs. And you can onlymake a plan if you know where to begin, can you? Howmuch sleep does my dog really get? And am I givingher enough mental stimulation to keep her curious?You can always keep these things in mind to get anoverview, but I got the urge to write things down. BecauseI wanted to know these things more exactly.I am Renee Schaakxs, 36 years old and living with my smallMunsterlander Froukje in Maastricht. My appreciation forTurids work began with my very first dog.When I welcomed Hugo in my life, a rescue dog, a lot of (wantedor unwanted) tips and advices from everyone around mecame along with him. The first few weeks Hugo was with me, Itried to keep up with it. I learned him to sit, and even give paw.But I saw the confusion and fear in his eyes and body languagewhen I asked him to do these things. I wanted to throweverything I thought I knew about dogs overboard. Because Ilooked at my dog and it wasn’t good. I couldn’t go on like that.There had to be a better way.The most common problem in miscommunicationbetween people and dogscomes from lack of knowledge of dogbehavior. And knowledge starts withobserving your dog. Just by looking athim and write down what you see. Havingan open mind, a curious mind, is animportant condition for getting to knowthings in life. We think we know so muchabout these magical animals, but is itreally true? Aren’t we filling in answersfor them? We are in need of objectiveinformation. The kind of informationyou get from counting certain behaviorlike peeing or sleeping. Or keeping trackof his heartrate. Counting may soundsilly for some, but it gives you the bestview on reality. You can try to keep thesethings in mind without making notes, butwe tend to forget. And that’s why I feltthe need to make a Dog Journal.22 PDTE Newsletter July 2020
The Dog Journal is all about making it a habit for dog ownersto observe their dogs. Every day, 52 weeks in every year. It alsoprovides a little bit of education.There are chapters where I explain the basic things about thedog behavior that we are going to observe. To guide dog ownersthrough the meaning of this journal and to make it easyaccessible for them.Colorful photo’s where my dog Froukje takes the leading partmakes it sparkling but handy notebook slash study book.I also want to inspire through this journal by letting somequotes of Turid pass by. Quotes that each in its own way areall-embracing when it comes down to living with your dog ina respectful way. These were remarks from Turid during myclasses that touched me deeply.
