HOW OURMICROBIOTAAFFECTSOUR MENTALHEALTHFirst of all, why do I talk aboutour microbiota and not our dog’smicrobiota? Well, because it worksthe same way for us, so whilethinking about our dog’s wellbeing, let’s also take the learningfor us!For years now the knowledge about themicrobiome has shot up, we are nowvery aware of the importance of havingbeneficial bacteria in our gut. In previousstudies, it was established that Alterationsin the microbiota can modulate behaviourssuch as social activity, stress, andanxiety-related responses-that are linked todiverse neuropsychiatric disorders.A few months ago, a new study (Chu, C.& al. The microbiota regulate neuronalfunction and fear extinction learning.Nature - October 2019) discovered themechanism by which the microbiota(bacteria, fungi and parasites) allowsmice to forget their fear. In this study, toget a sample of mice with fear, scientistsdid settle fear in them first. So even though thereare ethics comities for studies protocol,we just have to hope that empathy andconsideration for all kind of animals willdevelop in the future.So there were three groups of mice, acontrol group, an antibiotic-treated micegroup and a germ-free mice group (bornand raised in a sterile environment).While the fear of a noise started tofade way progressively in the controlgroup, the mice with previous antibioticstreatment and the germ free mice wereanxious, and still afraid of the noise.When they restored their microbiota, themice managed to forget their fear.The fear extinction mechanism relies alot in the activity of the medial prefrontalcortex (known for the control of emo-tions and the reasoning). Thanks to brainimaging, they saw that mice with a ‘poor’microbiota had lower cortical activity,proof that their inability to forget fearwas due to a decrease in brain activityand reshaping.As scientists are figuring out the mechanismthat explains how our gut and ourbrain communicate, we have to rememberthat when we face an anxious dog.Maybe his gut is unbalanced?In herbal choice selection (zooopharmacognosy)we often see anxious dogsselecting plant material known to helpbalance the gut, for example breweryeast. This is one more reason to let ourdogs self select what they need (zoopharmacognosyis complementary toallopathic medicine, it does not intend toreplace it).We also have to think of offering ourdogs an appropriate and varied dietincluding prebiotics (like fruits andvegetables).
