Strong growth in hybrid model
sales helps Volvo outperform the
UK’s new car market in January
Volvo Car UK has sustained
the sales momentum it
enjoyed through 2019 to start
the new decade strongly, with
4,107 new car registrations in
January – a total boosted by
growing customer preference
for its recently expanded range
of plug-in hybrid models.
The brand’s performance
– a 1% rise on the figures for
January last year – stands out
in a national market which
declined overall by 7% year-onyear.
Significantly, Volvo also
increased its market share by
9%, from 2.53 to 2.75%.
With the recent launch of
the XC40 Recharge Plug-in
Hybrid, every model in the
Volvo range is now available
in plug-in hybrid form, and
the public has responded
enthusiastically to the
combination of environmental
efficiency and powerful
performance the petrol-electric
technology offers. Sales of
Volvo plug-in hybrids are up
by three-quarters compared
with January 2019, accounting
for 14% of all the brand’s UK
sales and putting the company
on course to achieve its target
of a 25% sales share for its
PHEVs this year. This ambition
is being supported by a tripling
of Volvo’s hybrid production
capacity to meet the demand.
The benefits of hybrid –
notably substantially lower
benefit-in-kind company car tax
rates – were also a contributing
factor in double-digit growth
in Volvo’s fleet and business
sales. These rose 10% year on
year, to 1,675 units.
Volvo’s multi-award-winning
SUVs remain the top choice for
customers, with the compact
XC40, mid-size XC60 and
large XC90 occupying the
top three sales positions in
January, followed by the V90
large estate. The XC90 enjoys
a pre-eminent status as the
best-selling model in its class
for the month, claiming almost
15% of all large premium
SUV sales. Likewise, the V90
dominated the large premium
estate segment, accounting
for more than a third (35%) of
total sales.
The sales picture is also
strong for Volvo Selekt, Volvo’s
approved-used car programme,
which posted a 9% yearon-year
increase in January,
selling 3,376 cars in what was
its 37th consecutive month
of growth. The acceleration in
sales follows a record-breaking
year in 2019, when more than
33,000 approved-used Volvos
were sold.
Matt Galvin, Volvo Car UK’s
Operations Director, said:
“With many issues making
customers cautious about
buying a new car, Volvo stands
out as a brand that people
are confident to invest in. The
across-the-board appeal of our
comprehensively renewed
model range and the relevance
and performance of our plug-in
hybrid technology are key to
our growth, supported by the
excellent work of everyone in
our retail network.”

The New
Mercedes-Benz

features at a glance.

The new GLA, the eighth
model to join the line-up,
rounds off the current compact
car generation from Mercedes-
Benz. At the same time it
represents the entry level
into the brand’s successful
family of SUV models. The
character has been significantly
reinforced here compared
with the previous model:
the height of the new GLA,
at 1611 millimetres (1616
with roof rails), exceeds that
of its predecessor by more
than ten centimetres. The
correspondingly higher and
characteristic SUV seating
position also comes with
more headroom in the first
row. Legroom in the rear is
likewise much more generous
– even though the GLA is now
one and a half centimetres
shorter. Typical off-road design
features include the upright
front section, short overhangs
at the front and rear, and
protective cladding all round.
4MATIC models feature the
Off-Road Engineering Package
as standard. This comprises an
additional driving program, a
downhill driving assist function
and an off-road animation in the
media display, along with, in
combination with MULTIBEAM
LED headlamps, a special light
function for off-road driving.
The new GLA makes
a further step in terms of
safety courtesy of its driving
assistance systems with
cooperative driver support.
The enhanced functions of the
mobilitynews
7
Driving Assistance Package
include, for example, the
turning manoeuvre function,
the emergency corridor
function, the exit warning
function alerting the driver
to approaching cyclists or
vehicles, and a warning when
pedestrians are detected near
zebra crossings. The GLA is
able to react when the driver
doesn’t. Active Brake Assist
is charged in many situations
with applying autonomous
braking to avoid a collision
or to reduce its severity. The
system can also brake at a
speed of up to approx. 60
km/h for stationary vehicles
and pedestrians crossing the
road ahead. Depending on the
situation this even prevents
collisions up to a speed of 50
km/h. The new GLA is set to
arrive at European dealerships
in the spring of 2020.
With powerful and efficient
four-cylinder engines, the latest
driving assistance systems
with cooperative driver support,
the MBUX infotainment
system with intuitive operation
as well as the comprehensive
ENERGIZING comfort control,
the new model has all the
strengths of the current
generation of compacts from
Mercedes-Benz.
”The launch of the new GLA
marks the culmination of a
complete renewal of our family
of compact cars”, says Britta
Seeger, Member of the Board
of Management of Daimler
AG, responsible for Mercedes-
Benz Cars Marketing & Sales.
“The high demand for our
SUVs shows that we can offer
the right model for all of our
customers here. Reflecting
customer demand, these
include two off-road models,
the GLB and GLA, which
complement each other
perfectly: the GLB is the most
functional and most spacious
representative of our compact
class family, while the new
GLA is positioned as its sporty
brother and as a lifestyleoriented
SUV.”
“The new GLA embodies
the perfect synergy between
pure beauty and robust offroad
elements”, according to
Gorden Wagener, Chief Design
Officer Daimler Group. “With
it, we are carrying the dynamic
SUV forward into the future of
modern luxury.”
The new GLA will make its
debut in Europe in the spring
of 2020 and find its way to
our sales partners in the USA
and China in the early summer
or summer of 2020. Thanks
to this global sales coverage
Mercedes-Benz anticipates
that, calculated across its full
life cycle, the GLA will become
one of the brand’s most
popular compact class models,
only just behind the A-Class.
With a cd figure that starts at
0.28, the GLA offers very low
wind resistance.
The new GLA combines
the best from the two highestvolume
segments, the
compact cars and the SUVs.
The SUVs are a major structural
pillar in the Mercedes-Benz
product portfolio and now
represent the highest-volume
segment for Mercedes-Benz.
To date, more than six and a
half million customers around
the world have opted for a

Mercedes-Benz SUV.
The GLA is produced in
Rastatt (Germany), Hambach
(France) and, for the local
market, in Beijing (China).
Self-assured and dynamic:
the exterior design
The GLA features powerful
overall proportions with
short overhangs front and
rear. The front section flows
over the A-pillar into the
visually compact greenhouse.
Suggested powerdomes in
the bonnet, along with wheels
up to 20 inches in size and
mounted flush with the outer
edge of the body, reinforce the
self-assured appearance.
The clear contours, with
reduced lines and accentuated
planes, convey serene
sportiness and modernity.
Typical of the GLA are the
powerful shoulders of the
bodywork and the coupé-like
lines of the side windows. This
contoured side profile gives the
car its dynamically elegant flair
and offers an interesting play of
light and shadows.
As in the case of the other
Mercedes-Benz SUV models,
the radiator grille features
distinctive openings along with
a single louvre and a central
star. In hallmark brand style,
the inside of the headlamps
is finished to a high level of
quality, detail and precision.
The side and rear views are
characterised by the muscular
shoulders of the vehicle. The
doors reach over the sills,
thereby on the one hand
improving ease of access,
while at the same time keeping
the door frames (and thus also
the occupants’ trousers) free
of dirt and improving impact
protection in the event of a side
collision. All-round protective
cladding adds structure to
the overall proportions and
emphasises the vehicle’s offroad
character, as does the
simulated underride guard at
the front and rear.
The rear lights are in two
parts, with the reflectors
positioned separately in the
bumper. The makes it possible
to open the load compartment
wider, thus also making
loading easier. It has the added
effect of making the rear end
appear wider. Further practical
details, which may be optional
depending on the equipment
line, include the integrated roof
rails and the chrome-plated
load sill protection.
Contemporary and highquality:
the interior
The instrument panel
consists of a basic volume,
which features optical “cutouts”
in the driver and front
passenger area. The cut-out on
the driver’s side is dominated
by the free-standing display
unit, which is available in
three variants: with two 7-inch
displays (17.78 cm), with
one 7- and one 10.25-inch
display (26 cm) and, in the
Widescreen version, with two
10.25-inch displays. On the
passenger side, the cut-out
area is finished with a trim
element.
The round ventilation
outlets, five of them in all,
feature a high-quality turbine
look with meticulously
designed air guidance vanes.
The door centre panel flows
seamlessly over into the
armrest. The grab and assist
handle has a tubular profile
and runs horizontally like a
railing.
Included as standard
is the intuitively operated
MBUX infotainment system
(Mercedes-Benz User
Experience). MBUX can be
individually configured with
the aid of a range of options.
The powerful computer,
brilliant screens and graphics,
customisable presentation,
full-colour head-up display,
navigation with augmented
reality, learning software, and
voice control activated with
the prompt ”Hey Mercedes”
are the key advantages of the
system.

SUV success drives Volvo Cars to
sixth straight sales record and
beyond 700,000 cars
Volvo Cars has set a new,
sixth consecutive global sales
record in 2019, breaking the
700,000 cars sold mark for
the first time in its 93-year
history. The company recorded
sales of 705,452 cars in 2019,
an increase of 9.8 per cent
compared with 2018, solidly
outgrowing the overall market
across all regions.
The new sales record is
underpinned by continued
strong demand for Volvo Cars’
award-winning line-up. Its
three SUV models served as
a particular highlight as the
company gained market share
in China, the US and Europe
amid stagnating car markets.
The company also registered
strong demand for its electrified
vehicles, both in terms of
registered sales as well as in
retail orders. Overall, Volvo
Cars sold 45,933 plug-in hybrid
models in 2019, an increase of
22.9 per cent compared with
2018 and more than double the
number in 2017.
“I am very pleased to see
that for the first time in our
history we sold more than
700,000 cars, while we gained
market share in all our main
sales regions,” said Håkan
Samuelsson, Chief Executive
of Volvo Cars. “We aim to
build on this positive trend in
2020 as we start to roll out our
Recharge range of chargeable
Volvos.”
Illustrating the strength
of its portfolio and its sales
performance in 2019, Volvo
Cars surpassed the previous
full-year sales record of
642,253 cars, set in 2018,
nearly a full month before the
end of the year. December was
the company’s best-ever sales
month, with a 23.4 per cent
year-on-year increase to 74,239
cars sold.
In China, Volvo Cars sold
154,961 cars in 2019, an
increase of 18.7 per cent
compared with 2018 and
comfortably outperforming the
overall market. The result is an
all-time record for Volvo Cars
in China and the highest sales
number it has ever reached in a
single market.
In the United States,
Volvo Cars sold 108,234 cars,
breaking the 100,000 cars sold
threshold for the first time
since 2007. Compared with
2018, sales increased by 10.1
per cent.
In Europe, sales were
particularly strong in Germany,
where the company sold
more than 50,000 cars for
the first time in its history,
while it realised its best sales
result since 1990 in the United
Kingdom.
Other markets that
recorded their best-ever sales
performance in the company’s
history included Australia,
Belgium, Brazil, the Czech
Republic, Hungary, Korea,
Poland and Portugal.
The XC60 SUV continues
to be the best-selling car for
the company globally, followed
by the XC40 and XC90 SUVs,
while the saloons and estates
in the 90 and 60 series
also contributed to volume
growth in China and Europe
respectively.
This year, Volvo Cars will
start to roll out its Recharge
line-up in markets around
the globe. Recharge will be
the overarching name for
all chargeable Volvos with a
fully electric or plug-in hybrid
powertrain.
The Recharge car line aims
to further boost sales of Volvo
Cars’ chargeable cars and
encourage plug-in hybrid drivers
via incentives to use Pure
mode as much as possible.
Volvo Cars aims for plug-in
hybrid cars to make up 20 per
cent of its total sales in 2020.
Every Volvo model includes
a Recharge option, from the
small XC40 SUV via the 60
series cars to the large XC90
SUV flagship. Volvo Cars is the
only car maker to offer a plugin
variant of every model in its
line-up. Soon, buyers will also
be able to opt for the XC40
Recharge P8, Volvo Cars’ first
fully electric car.

Volvo offers a safe pair of hands
for fleets ahead of wintry driving
conditions
As the UK braces itself for
a harsh winter, Volvo Car UK is
helping businesses and fleet
managers prepare company
car drivers and their vehicles,
keeping them safe on the road
whatever the weather brings.
Steve Beattie, Head of
Business Sales at Volvo Car UK
comments: “At our nationwide
network of workshops, Volvotrained
technicians are on hand
to help prepare company cars
for winter, checking everything
from the battery and braking
system to the windscreen,
wiper blades, bulbs and
fluids. With this support, fleet
managers have peace of mind
that their drivers and vehicles
are ready for challenging
conditions.”
As well as the ‘winterready’
checks carried out by its
specialist technicians, Volvo also
recommends that businesses
encourage their company car
drivers to carry out their own
regular maintenance checks
on their vehicles. With snow,
heavy rain and poor visibility
expected across the country, it
is more important than ever to
check the condition and tread
depth of tyres, keep headlights
and windscreens clean and
ensure oil, coolant, de-icer and
screen wash are all topped up.
Tyres are arguably the most
important thing to maintain for
safe winter driving. Tyre tread
must be checked regularly, not
only due to legal requirements
but because it can have a
significant impact on stopping
distances. Travelling at 70mph,
with a tread of 1.6mm, the
stopping distance will be
37metres longer than if the
tyre tread is 3mm[1]. With
potholes being an issue on
most UK roads and wintry
weather contributing to further
deterioration, businesses
mobilitynews
14
should also encourage
company car drivers to check
for tyre damage such as bulges,
cuts and foreign objects as well
as uneven wear which could be
caused by misalignment.
The use of winter tyres not
only vastly extends the life
of standard wheels, but also
improves safety in snow, heavy
rain and freezing conditions.
Volvo recommends swapping
tyres once the temperature
dips below seven degrees
so that drivers are ready for
harsh conditions. Qualified
technicians at Volvo workshops
across the UK will also ensure
vehicles are fitted with the right
tyres and wheels, to provide
safety and performance even
in the most extreme winter
conditions.
Visibility is another critical
issue in poor weather
conditions. Volvo’s headlight
technology includes innovative
LED headlights that are
designed to improve visibility
in all weathers. The LEDs are
especially bright, and the lights
automatically use high beam
whenever possible, switching
to low beam when they detect
a vehicle in front.
The Volvo On Call app also
helps drivers prepare their
vehicle before the start of
every journey by giving remote
access to functions such as
checking fuel and sending
a destination directly to the
navigation system. What’s
more, Engine Remote Start,
which allows drivers to preheat
the cabin and clear the
windscreen, is both a safety
aid and a valuable time-saver.
These features, as well as
ensuring help is only ever the
touch of a button away, bring
comfort and assurance to
winter journeys.
Steve Beattie concludes:
“Businesses should remind
their company car drivers to
take journeys steady in poor
conditions. If visibility
is reduced or roads are
extremely wet or at risk of
being icy, unnecessary journeys
should be avoided and those
who do drive should be more
cautious and avoid risky
manoeuvres which could lead
to skidding.
“We also always advise
drivers to carry blankets, extra
warm layers of clothing and
food and drinks when the
weather turns wintry, just in
case they or other motorists
and their passengers become
stranded.”
Volvo Car UK top tips for helping fleet managers keep
drivers safe on the road this winter
• Prepare fl eet vehicles for winter driving by booking into a
local workshop where Volvo-trained technicians can check
important points such as the battery, braking system,
windscreen, wiper blades, bulbs and fl uids.
• Businesses should not put drivers under pressure to be in
the offi ce or at meetings in extreme weather, when driving
conditions are unsafe.
• As a minimum, fl eet managers and businesses should
provide drivers with a simple essential maintenance
checklist to carry out each week, including tyre tread
(minimum 3mm for wet and wintry conditions), wiper blade
condition, cleanliness of headlights and all windows, levels
of oil, coolant, screen wash and de-icer.
• Remind fl eet drivers to check their vehicle condition in
daylight or a fully lit garage.
• A winter driving policy should outline requirements for
vehicle preparation and any equipment or procedures
drivers must carry and adhere to during bad weather
spells. Keeping fuel levels above a quarter of a tank should
also be recommended in case of unexpected delays.
• Remind drivers to take extra care when visibility drops at
dusk, and to keep an eye on their speed on slippery roads
since stopping distances can be 10 times longer.
• Consider providing drivers with an emergency kit to keep
in their car, including breakdown essentials such as a
high-visibility vest, a blanket, torch and phone charger.
• Install map updates on all fl eet vehicles to ensure drivers
are always using the best possible routes. This can be
done quickly and easily online for models with Sensus
Navigation. Alternatively, a local Volvo workshop can install
the latest map updates.

Kia reveals first images of nextgeneration
Sorento
Kia Motors has revealed the
first official images of the All-
New Kia Sorento today, ahead
of its first public appearance at
the 2020 Geneva International
Motor Show.
The concept of ‘refined
boldness’ inspired Kia’s
designers, who sought to
maintain the robust, toughlooking
aesthetic of earlier
generations of Sorento, while
applying a greater degree of
refinement and elegance. More
stylish than ever, the Sorento’s
redefined design incorporates
sharper lines and uninterrupted
surfaces, making it noticeably
more sculpted than its more
round-edged predecessor.
With more contemporary
geometric details and sweptback,
elongated proportions,
the result is a more confident,
more mature and more
desirable design than ever.
The assertive ‘face’ of the
Sorento evolves, too, with a
new interpretation of Kia’s
hallmark ‘tiger nose’ grille.
Wider and more expansive,
it wraps organically around
the integrated headlamps on
each side. The headlamps
themselves feature a new
‘tiger eye’ LED daytime running
light, adding extra focus to the
design by depicting the intense
impression of the lines around
a tiger’s eyes.
In profile, the proportions
of the Sorento are subtly
adapted to make it appear
longer, with shorter front
and rear overhangs and a
longer wheelbase. Its new
proportions also extend the
length of the bonnet, drawing
the A-pillar 30mm further
back from the front axle for a
more ‘cab-rearward’ design.
The trailing edge of the hood
wraps around the front wings
and turns into a single, strong
character line which extends
along the side of the Sorento
and flows into the new vertical
taillights.
The Sorento sits at the
heart of Kia’s reinvigorated
global SUV line-up, which also
includes the Seltos, Stonic,
Sportage, and Telluride. The
new model is the result of a
collaborative effort between
all three studios within Kia’s
global design network, in
Korea, Europe and North
America. The fourth-generation
model is based on an all-new
platform, raising standards in
the midsize SUV segment for
space, practicality, efficiency
and quality.
Designed and engineered
to take on everything life can
throw at it, the new Sorento
will make its debut on 3
March 2020. UK specification,
pricing and on-sale date will be
announced in due course.

Joining the
Motability
Scheme
When you join the Motability Scheme, you don’t just get access to a brand
new vehicle every three years, you also unlock all the freedom that comes
with a truly worry-free lease. The process is very simple, but these six
frequently asked questions should cover any queries you may have.

18
Who can join the Motability
Scheme?
To join the Motability
Scheme and lease a car,
scooter, powered wheelchair or
Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle
(WAV), you must receive one of
four allowances:
1. The Higher Rate Mobility
Component of the Disability
Living Allowance (DLA)
2. Enhanced Rate of the
Mobility Component of
Personal Independence
Payment (PIP)
3. War Pensioners’ Mobility
Supplement (WPMS)
4. Armed Forces Independence
Payment (AFIP)
You will need to have at least
12 months remaining on your
allowance when you apply to
join the Scheme.
What is the cost of leasing
through the Scheme?
You have three pricing
options to choose from. Some
options will cost less than your
weekly allowance, some will
cost the same as your weekly
allowance, and some will
cost more than your weekly
allowance. The latter option
requires a one-off upfront
Advance Payment but gives
you a wider choice.
Whichever option you
choose, your mobility allowance
is paid directly by your benefits
agency every four weeks.
If I’m eligible to join, what are
the next steps?
Once you have a better
idea of the vehicles which
might be right for you, find
dealers in your local area, you
can search by town, postcode
and preferred manufacturer.
Every dealer has trained
Motability Scheme specialists
so it’s worth getting in touch
with them before visiting the
dealership to find the best time
to speak with them.
If opting for a car, you’ll
need to visit the dealership
to test drive your choice. If
you’re selecting a WAV, scooter,
or powered wheelchair, the
dealer you choose will come
to your home to make sure
your vehicle meets your exact
needs — which will include a
test drive.
When you’re happy with
your vehicle, your Motability
Scheme specialist will place
your order online at the
dealership. For the dealer to
do this, you will need to have
your certificate of entitlement
stating which allowance you
receive, proof of address,
and for cars and WAVs,
driving licence or licences for
anyone wishing to drive the
vehicle. You’ll also need to
provide details of any previous
accidents or driving convictions.
If you can’t be present to place
the order yourself, you’ll need
to have a legal appointee to
represent you.
What happens next?
Once your order has been
placed, your application will
then be checked before it is
passed back to the dealership
to order your car. The
application process can take a
couple of days, during which
time you can check on your
application by clicking on the
online Application Checker. If
your application is approved,
the dealer will arrange delivery
of your new car. The delivery
of your new car will vary
depending on the type and
availability of the car as well
as the dealer you choose.
However, your dealer should be
able to advise on these delivery
times.
Do I need to organise
insurance or breakdown
cover?
No, for the duration of
your lease, RSA Motability
insurance, full RAC breakdown
assistance, servicing, and
maintenance are all taken care
of when you lease a vehicle on
the Motability Scheme – simply
add fuel and you’re good to go.
Do I have to be the driver of
my Motability Scheme car/
vehicle?
No. If leasing a Motability
Scheme car, up to three named
drivers are included as part
of your lease. These can be
yourself, friends, family, or
carers and you do not need to
be in the car for every journey,
so the named drivers can use
the car for any journey that
benefits you.

Kia electrifies its line-up for 2020
Hot on the heels of the
electrified versions of the
Niro, Soul and Sportage, Kia
is expanding the line-up even
further with the launch of
Plug-in Hybrid versions of the
recently introduced all-new
Kia XCeed and the stylish and
practical Ceed Sportswagon.
Each is powered by a 1.6-litre
GDi engine combined with
an electric motor and 8.9kWh
battery pack to produce 139bhp
and 265Nm of torque.
The new Kia XCeed and
Ceed Sportswagon Plug-in
Hybrid offer a compelling
alternative to conventional
petrol and diesel models. The
new powertrain combines a
lithium-polymer battery pack,
an electric motor, and an
efficient 1.6-litre GDi (Gasoline
Direct injection) engine. The
powertrain’s total power and
torque output are 139bhp and
265Nm.
The powertrain is paired with
a six-speed dual-clutch auto
transmission (6DCT), ensuring
a more enjoyable drive than
other hybrid vehicles equipped
with electronic continuously
variable transmissions (e-CVT).
Traditional e-CVT hybrids
convert a portion of engine
output through the electric
motor, resulting in power losses
from energy conversion. Kia’s
six-speed dual clutch differs by
allowing the full output of both
the engine and motor to be
transferred in parallel through
the transmission, with minimal
loss of energy. Standard
regenerative braking technology
allows the new Plug-in Hybrid
models to harvest kinetic
energy and recharge their
battery packs while coasting
or braking, further enhancing
the overall efficiency of the
powertrain.
New design features set the
Plug-in Hybrid models apart
Both new models feature their
own distinctive design features
to differentiate them from
other petrol and diesel models
in the Kia XCeed and Ceed
Sportswagon line-ups.
Each car has a new closed
‘tiger-nose’ grille at the front
of the car to aid aerodynamic
efficiency and feature distinct
‘eco plug-in’ exterior badges.
The charging port is integrated
into the left front wing of each
car.
Inside, there’s the same
driver-oriented dashboard,
low seating position and
everyday ergonomics of
the existing Ceed line-up.

However, the new Plug-in
Hybrid models feature a range
of new functions to enhance
usability for owners looking
to extract the most out of
the new powertrain. Both
vehicles are equipped with a
charging indicator, a visual aid
to tell owners that their car is
charging or when the battery
is fully-charged. Its location on
top of the dashboard means
drivers can instantly ascertain
the car’s state of charge at a
glance from outside the car (for
instance, when it is parked on
the driveway at home and the
owner hasn’t left the house
yet).
Both cars offer Kia’s brandnew
10.25-inch touchscreen
infotainment and navigation
system with Kia’s UVO Connect
telematics. Unique to the
new Plug-in Hybrid variants,
the systems incorporate new
functionality to help owners
locate available charging points
in their vicinity, or en route to
their navigation destination.
The screens can show
relevant information relating
to the powertrain, displaying
remaining charge levels in
the battery and energy usage
graphics. Owners can use
the touchscreen system to
schedule when their vehicle
should charge when plugged
in at home, enabling owners to
take advantage of cheaper offpeak
energy tariffs, if available.
The instrument cluster
features unique displays for
the Plug-in Hybrid powertrain,
displaying remaining charge
levels, anticipated electric-only
range and the flow of energy
between the battery pack,
engine and electric motor.
Standard on the Kia XCeed
‘First Edition’, Kia’s new fullydigital
12.3-inch ‘Supervision’
instrument cluster is designed
to deliver information as clearly
as possible with a range of
unique graphics displays. The
high-resolution 1920x720-pixel
Supervision display replaces
the conventional dials.
The ‘Driver Only’ heating,
ventilation and air-conditioning
system – activated with a new
button on the dashboard –
instantly de-activates airflow
to all cabin vents except
those nearest the driver.
This is designed to reduce
the draw on battery energy
from the ventilation system,
while still keeping the driver at
their preferred temperature.
Unlike conventional ventilation
systems, Kia’s ‘Driver Only’
system doesn’t simply
restrict airflow to certain
vents, rerouting it elsewhere;
instead, it switches off the fans
themselves, reducing energy
use at source.
From the first sketches,
Ceed was designed with
electrification in mind
The Ceed model line-up was
engineered from the start to
accommodate new hybrid
powertrains. This means that
the adoption of a Plug-in Hybrid
powertrain in the Kia XCeed
and Ceed Sportswagon has had
a minimal impact on packaging,
with the structure adapted
from the start to contain the
powertrain’s battery pack. The
8.9 kWh battery pack is located
alongside the 37-litre fuel tank
beneath the rear bench, unlike
many other plug-in hybrid
vehicles, in which the battery
pack takes up valuable boot
space. As a Plug-in Hybrid, the
Ceed Sportswagon – the most
practical iteration of the Ceed
range – provides 437 litres of
luggage space, and up to 1,506
litres with the 40:20:40 splitfold
rear seats folded down.
Luggage capacity in the Kia
XCeed Plug-in Hybrid is 291
litres, growing to 1,243 litres
with the rear folded down. Both
models will be available with a
Towing Pack for towing trailers
as standard – a rarity among
cars in the hybrid class.
Created specifically for
Europe
The next stage in Kia’s
electrification strategy, the
new Plug-in Hybrid versions
of the Kia XCeed and Ceed
Sportswagon are the first time

Spotlight on cars for the under 25s
The choice of cars for Motability Scheme drivers aged 25 or under is
extensive: here Richard Aucock from Motoring Research looks at four great
choices for youngsters.
The Motability Scheme prides itself on its inclusivity. This extends to younger drivers, with those
aged under 25 still eligible to drive a wide range of cars.
To highlight some of the options open to younger drivers, we’ve looked at four interesting new
car options, showcasing the huge breadth of choice out there. From zippy small cars, to roomy
hatchbacks, to stylish SUVs, we’ve got them all!
Kia XCeed 1.0 T-GDI 3
What sort of car is it?
The Kia XCeed is the crossover cousin to the regular Ceed family hatchback range. It has a
unique body style, raised ride height and tough appearance.
Why is it so popular?
Kia makes some very stylish-looking cars and the XCeed is another interesting addition to
the range. It is perfect for those who want a more rugged SUV-style crossover alternative
to a regular five-door, but who might find the bigger Kia Sportage a little on the large side.
The XCeed is good to drive, with a confident feel behind the wheel and surprising
performance from the fuel-efficient 1.0-litre engine. We also like the ride quality, which
does a good job of absorbing rough city roads. The standard heated seats and steering
wheel of this ‘3’ variant are welcome goodies, too!

Ford Focus 1.5 Ecoblue 120 ST-Line auto
What sort of car is it?
Ford has given the classic family-sized five-door hatchback a stylish new look with the
latest Focus, particularly in this performance-influenced but good value ST-Line trim.
Why is it so popular?
The Ford Focus has long been a best-seller in Britain, for good reason. It is extremely
practical, easy to use,
good to drive and, in its latest guise, stylish to look at. The sporty ST-Line features are
particularly appealing.
This refined diesel engine has ample power and is very good on fuel. The smooth
automatic gearbox also adds user-friendliness – and instead of a gear lever, it is controlled
by a rotary dial between the front seats, a feature normally only seen in luxurious Jaguars.

A brief history of the RAC
One of the benefits of having a Motability Scheme car is that full breakdown
assistance and cover, provided by RAC Motability Assist, is included in the
lease at no additional cost.
The RAC support our
customers every day, but did
you know that they have been
helping motorists for over 100
years? Read this article to find
out more on the history of the
RAC.
Ever since its foundation
in 1897, the RAC has been
consistently at the forefront of
developing motoring services –
right through to the present day
where they boast some market
leading innovations to assist all
our customers at the roadside.
The Royal Automobile Club
(RAC) was initially formed by a
group of pioneering motorists,
who embraced the new
freedoms brought about by the
development of the combustion
engine, and in its very earliest
days was responsible for
organising the first motor races.
As motoring among the
population grew, so did the
services the RAC could offer
its members and it wasn’t long
before mobile uniformed patrols
were introduced in 1901 and
roadside emergency telephone
boxes in 1912.
The mobile mechanics on
their Norton motorbikes were
a familiar sight in the early part
of the 20th century. But in the
years after the second world
war, as motor manufacturing
increased and road networks
improved, the patrol van was
introduced which could carry
more tools and parts, to fix a
wider range of problems.
Moving with the changing
times and responding to
customer need has always
been at the forefront of how the
RAC has operated, which has
been reflected in some of their
more recent innovations.
At the turn of the millennium,
as the RAC marked its
centennial anniversary, they
moved away from the RAFstyle
blue uniforms and relaunched
the patrol fleet in the
distinctive orange that is known
throughout the country today.
At about the same time the
RAC designed, developed and
launched a retractable rapid
deployment trailer, a towing
facility which is stored in the
back of all its patrol vans. And
earlier this year the towing
facility was further extended to
mobilitynews
42
include ‘all wheels up’ towing
equipment which means
they can take bigger vehicles,
such as 4x4s, which are more
common on the road and need
all wheels lifted to be towed.
Keeping pace with modern
vehicles is always key, which
is why all RAC patrols are
equipped with the latest mobile
diagnostic equipment – RAC
Scan+ – which enables them to
quickly identify faults that would
otherwise have to be dealt with
by a garage.
And, as standard, every RAC
van carries more than 500 parts
and tools which patrols use to
get members’ vehicles going
again as quickly as possible. The
RAC is very proud of its record
of repairing four out of five
vehicles at the roadside.
This year they will also
trialling new digital services to
further improve the service for
all customers, and introducing a
fleet of new heavy duty D-Max
Isuzu vans, all carrying electric
charging units to help stranded
motorists get on their way if
their electric vehicle battery
runs flat.
The RAC is committed to
making motoring easier, safer,
more affordable and more
enjoyable for drivers and road
users.
All Motability Scheme vehicles come with
the same worry-free package, this includes:
• Breakdown cover from the RAC
• Insurance (that’s for three named drivers
on our cars and WAVs)
• Servicing and maintenance
• Tyre repair and replacement from Kwik
Fit, windscreen repair, MOTs and road tax
• Support from our dedicated UK-based
Customer Services team (who were
recently voted best in the UK)

Test drive: Scooters with a range

Rider Liberator
For me, there is no doubt that the
Liberator mobility scooter offers the
ultimate in manoeuvrability, luxury
and comfort. With its sleek and stylish
design, the four-wheel scooter is highperformance
and comes with two
large powerful 50aH batteries giving a
maximum range of 25 miles per charge.
There’s also a choice of air-filled or
solid tyres. Weighing in at 103 kg the
Liberator is 120 cm in length and height
and 62 cm wide. The maximum user
weight is 158 kg.
Out on the road, I was particularly
impressed by the Liberator’s versatility.
There was advanced front and rear
suspension, a fully adjustable extrapadded
seat, a gas-assisted tiller,
easy to use delta handlebar, all-round suspension, powerful front and rear LED lights and
high visibility rearview mirrors. All of these made for a safe and comfortable ride when I
travelled to the shops as well as off-road. In my opinion, this would make the Liberator a
fantastic choice for all seasons and for day and night use.
One particularly appealing feature of the Liberator is its compact and highly manoeuvrable
design. It was easy to use in confined spaces, making it ideal for places such as shopping
centres. It would also make it easy to store and transport. The Komfi Liberator lived up to
its name — it was a liberating and comfy experience.

The TGA Supersport is different from every other

its three big alloy wheels, distinctive handlebars,

outstanding comfort, stability and

A powerful 75 aH battery gives an
impressive maximum range of 30 miles
per charge. On my test drive, the operating lever gave
me an amazing smooth finger-tip control of speed
going forwards and in reverse. I inched forward, and
then quickly accelerated to a top speed of 8mph.
I was pleased to find the steering responsive.
An impressive turning circle allowed me to negotiate almost any obstacle. And the
Supersport’s upholstered adjustable seat made it an exceptionally comfortable ride. Better
still, the arms lifted up and the whole seat rotated to allow me to access it easily. The
large rear basket, which comes as standard, was a nice touch too. Weighing in at 119 kg,
the Supersport is 163 cm in length, 97 cm in height and a slim 74 cm wide. Maximum
user weight is 200 kg. My verdict is that the Supersport is super and sporty too. It lives up

Kwik Fit’s guide to
smart motorways
The number of smart motorways in the UK is
increasing. As of Autumn 2019 there were already
20 sections of road operating smart motorway
schemes with several others under construction
or due to start soon.
The first smart motorway
opened on a section of the
M42 in 2006. Statistics from
Highways England show that
journey reliability has improved
by 22% on this road and the
number of accidents involving
severe injuries has reduced.
However, smart motorways
have hit the news recently as
many drivers are still unsure
of the rules surrounding them
which can lead to avoidable
accidents occurring. So in this
article, we take a look at the
types of smart motorway plus
tips should you find yourself
driving on one.
What is a smart motorway?
A smart motorway is a
stretch of motorway that
uses various methods, such
as using the hard shoulder
as an active traffic lane and
variable speed limits, to ease
congestion and maximise
motorway capacity. There
are three main types of smart
motorway schemes currently
operating in the UK. These are
‘All-Lane Running’ schemes,
‘Controlled Motorways’ and
‘Dynamic Hard Shoulder
Running’ schemes.
All-Lane Running
All-Lane Running smart
motorways permanently use
the hard shoulder as an active
traffic lane to ease congestion.
The hard shoulder would only
be closed to traffic if an incident
has occurred which requires
emergency vehicles to have
exclusive access to the hard
shoulder. If this happens, a
sign displaying a red X will be
visible above the hard shoulder
and you should exit the lane
as soon as it is safe to do so.
It is dangerous to remain in
this lane even if you can’t see
an obstruction as you may
be restricting the access of
emergency vehicles attending
the scene.
If there’s an emergency and
you need to pull over, you will
find emergency refuge areas
(or ERA’s) positioned at regular
intervals along the road giving
you a safe place to stop.
Controlled Motorways
These motorways have lanes
with variable speed limits but
the hard shoulder is not used
as an active traffic lane. On
Controlled Motorways, the hard
shoulder must only be used
in an emergency. Electronic
signs on the motorway gantry
will indicate the current
speed limit on that stretch of
road. These speed limits are
monitored by speed cameras,
Highways England has
confirmed that these speed
cameras accommodate for
drivers reducing their speed
in a sensible way should the
speed limit change. However,
it is still crucial that you remain
alert so that you can adapt
to these changes and avoid
penalties or fines. If no speed
limit signs are visible at all,
then the national speed limit
will apply.

Tips for driving on smart motorways
Driving on smart motorways is similar to driving on regular motorways. However, there
are extra alerts to be mindful of on smart motorways. It is important to remember never
to drive in a lane marked by a red X and always keep within the variable speed limits.
Look out for solid white lines marking the hard shoulder which you should not drive on
unless indicated otherwise.
Dynamic Hard Shoulder
Running
These schemes allow the hard
shoulder to be used as an
active traffic lane at particularly
busy times. If you’re unsure of
which area of the motorway is
the hard shoulder, it is indicated
by a solid white line painted on
the road which distinguishes
and separates it from the
normal motorway lanes.
A sign on the gantry will
indicate whether the hard
shoulder is open as a normal
lane or not. The hard shoulder is
not open for normal traffic if the
signs over it are blank or show
a red X. You could receive a
fixed penalty of up to £100 and
3 points for driving on the hard
shoulder when it is marked
with a red X. Dynamic Hard
Shoulder Running motorways
also operate with variable
speed limits so it is important
to look out for signs making
drivers aware of speed limit
changes.

10 things to help you decide if the
Motability Scheme is right for you
When you join the Motability Scheme you get more than just a car,
Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle (WAV), scooter or powered wheelchair of your
choice, you also get to enjoy all the freedom that comes with a truly worryfree
lease. We know that getting a new car is a big decision, which is why
we’ve highlighted a few things that people often want to talk to us about
before deciding if the Scheme is for them. Have a read through and you may
well find answers to questions that have been on your mind too!
1. How does the Motability
Scheme work?
The purpose of the Scheme
is to provide the simplest,
most affordable way to run
a brand new car. There’s no
credit checks or lengthy forms
to fill out. You just exchange
your mobility allowance to
lease the car that suits your
needs best. Everyday running
costs such as insurance for
up to three named drivers,
servicing and maintenance
and breakdown recovery are
all included in the weekly
price. So, you just need to pay
for fuel and off you go.
2. Can I get a car on the
Scheme if I don’t drive?
Yes, you don’t have to
be able to drive to get a car
on the Scheme. Lots of our
customers don’t drive. That’s
why the insurance with your
lease is for up to three named
drivers. So your car could be
driven by a family member,
friend or carer, it doesn’t have
to be you. Also, you may
like to know, you can lease a
Motability Scheme car as a
learner driver, so long as you
have a provisional licence and
are listed as a permitted driver
on the Certificate of Motor
Insurance. You must also be
accompanied by a driver who
is over 21 and has held their
licence for at least three years.
They should also be named
on your Certificate of Motor
Insurance in case they need
to take control of the car
themselves.
3. What if I’m family, a friend
or a carer?
We want the Motability
Scheme to be as convenient
as possible for our customers
and the people who support
them. That’s one of the
reasons we include insurance
for up to three named drivers
on the lease. Also, if it’s easier
for the customer, they can
nominate you to speak to us
about the lease agreement on
their behalf.
4. How do I know if I am
eligible for the Scheme?
Simple, you’re eligible if
you currently receive any of
these allowances and have
12 months remaining on your
award:
• Higher Rate Mobility
Component of the Disability
Living Allowance (DLA)
mobilitynews
50
• Enhanced Rate of the
Mobility Component of
Personal Independence
Payment (PIP)
• War Pensioners’ Mobility
Supplement (WPMS)
• Armed Forces
Independence Payment
(AFIP)
5. What about PIP
reassessments?
If you’re currently in
receipt of the Disability Living
Allowance (DLA) and are
invited for a reassessment,
as long as you’re successful
in your application for the
Enhanced Rate of the Mobility
Component of Personal
Independence Payment (PIP),
you will still be eligible to join
the Motability Scheme. If you
became a customer, then lost
your allowance, we would
offer you the chance to buy
the car, or you could return
it with no further payments
to make. If that’s the case,
you may also be entitled to
a £1000 stopped allowance
support payment.
6. How much will a new car
cost me a week?
Our choice of over 2,000
vehicles is split into the three
price band options below. You
can pick from the one that fits
your budget the best:
• Cars that cost less than
your weekly mobility
allowance, so you keep the
difference.
• Cars that cost exactly the
same as your allowance.
• Cars that cost the same as
your allowance, plus a oneoff
Advance Payment.
Remember, whatever car you
choose, insurance, servicing,
repairs and breakdown
recovery, are all included in the
weekly price.
7. What if I need
adaptations?
If you require adaptations
to help make driving, or
travelling, easier or more
comfortable, you’ll be
pleased to know that many
of the most popular ones are
available at no additional cost
when fitted at the start of your
lease.
Adaptations generally fall
into three categories:
• Driving adaptations to
help improve your driving
experience
• Stowage adaptations
allowing you to stow your
scooter or wheelchair
• Access adaptations which
help you get in and out of
the car
8. Can I trade in my old car
against a new one?
You can trade in your
privately owned car at
most Motability Scheme
dealerships. This could help
finance an Advance Payment
or optional extras for your
new car. And remember, a
Motability Scheme car is
brand new and your lease
includes all the maintenance
you’ll need to keep your
vehicle running smoothly.
So that means none of the
unexpected repair bills, often
associated with running an
older car.
9. Will I definitely be able to
get the car I need?
The Motability Scheme
stays right up-to-date with the
latest car models from most
of the leading manufacturers.
So yes, the likelihood is that
the car you want will be
available. All we would say is,
before setting your heart on a
particular car, visit a dealership
or two and speak to their
Motability specialist for expert
advice. They may recommend
other cars to test drive, so you
can compare them to the one
you were thinking of.
Finding the right new
car starts with having the
best possible choice of
manufacturers and their latest
models – and that’s what
you’ll find on our Car Search
tool. And whether you’re
looking for a low emission
hatchback, or a bigger family
vehicle, our easy online ‘Car
Search’ makes getting to what
you want easy.
10. How do I apply?
It’s simple- search through
our range of vehicles to see
what’s available, then visit
a dealership to speak to a
Motability specialist and
arrange a test drive. When
you’ve decided on the car, the
dealer you choose will help
complete your order for you at
the dealership.
Want to know more?
Remember, we’re here to
help however we can, so if
there are other things that you
would like to talk to us about,
just call when you are ready.
Or you can request a call back
at a time that’s convenient for
you. You can reach one of the
team on 0800 694 9000.

New AI technology for people
with disabilities
AI, which stands for Artificial Intelligence, refers to the ability of a computer
or computer-controlled robot to perform tasks normally done by humans.
Some AI utilises voice recognition to work, meaning it responds to speech. It
can help people with disabilities in a number of ways by recognising people
in photos, understanding speech, remembering passwords, reminding you
to take medication, and searching for information online.
Here we look at how AI
is helping people deal with
symptoms of a variety of
conditions and some of
the broader applications it
could have.
Multiple Sclerosis
In early 2019, researchers
in London trained AI to track
responses to the treatment
of multiple sclerosis (MS) to
improve care for people with
the condition. Academics at
University College London
and King’s College London
conducted a study using
computer algorithms to
track changes in hundreds of
MRI brain scans belonging
to patients prescribed
Natalizumab, a treatment for
highly-active relapsing MS.
After absorbing this data, the
computer was able to unearth
new patterns in patients’ brains.
Rather than simply
mirroring what radiologists
do, AI does what no human
can do—it draws intelligence
from very rich data to enable
individually-tailored care. This
can be used to anticipate
symptoms before the patient is
even aware of them.
Rheumatoid Arthritis
Rheumatoid Arthritis is an
autoimmune disease where
the body’s immune system
mistakenly attacks joints. The
University of Bath is developing
an app to monitor patients’
symptoms between medical
appointments and predict flareups.
Called the Flare Profiler,
the app will test a unique range
of patient data using video and
thermal imaging technology.
The project will then analyse
patient data using AI to group
mobilitynews
54
patient disease activity patterns
and identify the most effective
treatment. It could cut down
drastically on hospital visits
for patients and so save them
time, inconvenience, lost
working hours, and cost.
Osteoarthritis
Osteoarthritis is a very
common condition causing
joints to become painful and
stiff, usually as we get older.
It can be mild to very severe,
making movement and mobility
difficult and painful. AI is being
used to help people manage
and alleviate symptoms. The
charity Versus Arthritis has
developed a virtual assistant
powered by AI. It learns over
time and improves as more
people use it, so just by
accessing the virtual assistant,
you are assisting research of AI
for people with osteoarthritis.
Smart speakers can also
make life easier if mobility is
impaired. They can turn lights
on or off, control heating,
turn on the TV and search for
channels or programmes, set
alarms, alert you to who’s at
the front door, and even read
you a book!
The Motability Scheme
helps you to get mobile by
exchanging your mobility
allowance to lease a new car,
Wheelchair Accessible Vehicle,
scooter or powered wheelchair,
all of which come with our
fully inclusive lease package.
To find out more about joining
the Scheme, you can order a
free information pack and check
your eligibility.
Parkinson’s
In 2016 a team of scientists at
Microsoft developed a pen to
help graphic designer Emma
Lawton, who is living with
Parkinson’s, steady her hand so
she could write again. Emma
now works as project lead for
apps at Parkinson’s UK. She
says in an interview with The
Evening Standard:
“There are over 40
symptoms of Parkinson’s
so there is no one size fits
all treatment or individual.
The apps we develop help
people to create their own
toolkit, whether they need
help sleeping, swallowing or
rejigging their memory.
AI is the future of
healthcare. It allows us to
be superhuman, to hover
above ourselves and see
things from afar to help make
intelligent decisions. In the
future I hope everything will
feed together. So your smart
fridge will connect to your
wearable tech and warn you
what you ate last night may
cause some cramping and
if you aren’t able to walk,
you should avoid travelling.
It allows us to master our
condition.”
Emma Lawton,
The Evening Standard
Recovery from strokes
Though the brain can be
retrained following a stroke, it
can take hundreds of hours.
Voice recognition is being
developed by the Medical
Graphics team at The University
of Chester, with the help of
the stroke department at the
Countess of Chester Hospital,
to make this easier.
Using virtual reality
headsets, the aim is to make
intensive rehabilitation more
accessible and immediate.
This could reduce the duration
of long-term care and make
rehabilitation programmes
more adaptable. The devices
can be operated with minimal
supervision. By doing the
exercises “virtually” this
means patients aren’t wearing
themselves out as they’re using
their heads, not their arms and
legs which can be exhausting
for patients recovering from a
stroke.
US-based Motus Nova
has developed a device that
can be used at home and
is as fun as playing video
games. The Hand Mentor
and Foot Mentor can be used
independently and without
supervision. The user operates
the device using sensors to
monitor and determine what is
most effective. It’s hoped this
product will soon be available in
the UK.
Get involved in
researching AI
There are a number of charities
for people with disabilities
taking an active interest in
AI, so it’s well worth having
a search online and checking
out their websites for updates
on latest developments. There
may also be a chance to take
part in research so you can play
your part in developing AI. The
national charity Scope actively
encourages the inclusion
of disabled people in user
research. They themselves
have a research panel where
disabled people and carers use
their experiences to help create
and improve products and
services.

Four simple car checks for safer
winter driving
Getting your vehicle ready for winter doesn’t need to be difficult. Here are some basic
maintenance tips from Kwik Fit that can help get your car through the colder months.
1 Check your screenwash bottle and top it up regularly.
A lot of dirt and grime ends up on the windscreen during winter, so having plenty of
screenwash will help to maintain your view.
2 Check that all your lights are working and clean them regularly.
If you have a blown bulb in your brake light, you could receive a fixed penalty notice if stopped
by the police. Also, other road users may not be able to see you clearly in wintry conditions.
3 Check your tyres every few weeks.
Adequate tread is critical to help tyres grip cold and icy roads. Make sure you have at least 2mm
of tread on all of your tyres.
4 Check your coolant level and top it up if necessary, as it protects your engine from
extreme cold temperatures.
Coolant is stored in a reservoir under the bonnet and is usually a bright-pink or blue colour.
Check your vehicle handbook, or you can ask your dealer, if you’re having trouble finding it.

Can I drive with autism?
The diagnosis of an Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is not necessarily a
barrier to holding a driving licence. If you qualify for the Enhanced Rate
Mobility Component of Personal Independence Payment (PIP), you can use
this award to lease a Motability Scheme car. Here is some information on
driving with autism and how the Motability Scheme can help you.
Getting your driving licence
You must tell the Driver
and Vehicle Licensing Agency
(DVLA) or Driver & Vehicle
Agency (DVA) Northern Ireland
if your disability affects your
ability to drive safely. Initially,
the first person to discuss this
with is your GP who will have
access to the DVLA guidelines
for people with a disability and
will be able to go through these
with you to find out if you can
take the next steps.
Barriers to holding a
licence for people with autism
might include a history of
epilepsy, perceptual problems,
difficulties with multitasking,
poor motor control
or dyspraxia, and problems
with sequencing. You may
also need to find your own
workaround for difficulties with
communication. However, it’s
important to know that none of
these are an absolute barrier to
getting your driving licence!
When you’re learning to
drive with autism, there is lots
of support out there for you.
There are driving instructors
who specialise in teaching
people with disabilities. You
may also find it useful to chat
to other people with autism
about driving in online forums
such as the online community
and forums run by the National
Autistic Society.
What driving can do for you
Having a car can give you
easier access to a job, a work
scheme, college, training or a
day centre. It also saves you
having to rely on friends or
family for lifts or using taxis and
public transport. Once you’ve
got used to having your own
car and become accustomed
to driving it whenever you
want, it could even boost your
confidence in other areas of
your life.
Driving a car can also be a
very enjoyable hobby in itself,
mobilitynews
58
aside from being able to get
yourself to the activities you
like to do such as exercising or
going to the cinema.
And you can even make a
career out of it! There are some
driving instructors in the UK
who themselves have autism.
Julia Malkin battled autism to
become the country’s most
qualified driving instructor. Her
story was told in the BBC Three
programme Autistic Driving
School shown in 2010.
Julia says driving is
enormously helpful if you have
autism because it boosts sense
of self. She explains: “We
need confidence and ability
to achieve more than typical
people do. That is because our
self esteem is naturally weak
because of our communication
difficulties. Driving does help
to resolve that kind of thing by
giving us the ability to believe
in ourselves.”
Harry Debling, who was
diagnosed with autism at 18
months, set up his own driving
school to show people with
autism can overcome barriers
to achieve their goals. “I want
to show autistic people in a
positive light. It’s not all doom
and gloom. There are many
different levels of the spectrum
and a lot of autistic people with
the help and support they get
can succeed,” he says.
How the Motability Scheme
can help
The Motability Scheme
makes leasing a car an easy,
hassle-free experience. With
the Scheme, you can exchange
part or all of your mobility
allowance to lease a car for
three years and, once the three
years are over, if you decide
to remain on the Scheme, you
can choose another vehicle.
Insurance for up to three
named drivers, maintenance
and breakdown cover is already
included in the price you
pay. The Motability Scheme
specialist at your choice of
dealership will take care of any
paperwork and place the order
for you, and you’re supported
by the Scheme throughout the
lease.
Am I eligible?
You can find out if you
are eligible for the Motability
Scheme using our eligibility
checker. The next step after
that is making an appointment
to visit a Scheme specialist at
your nearest dealer to pick out
and test drive cars. You can
prepare for your visit in advance
using our handy dealer visit
checklists which should help
you narrow down your options.
