Police kill taskforce member,
another in Abia
By Ugochukwu
Alaribe
U MUAHIA—TWO
persons were,
yesterday, shot dead in Aba,
Abia State, as Policemen
shot dead a member of the
taskforce of the state Board
of Internal Revenue, BIR, as
they allegedly attempted to
stop the taskforce from
impounding a car.
It was gathered that a
Nigeria hits 40.18% broadband penetration
By Emmanuel
Elebeke
ABUJA—NIGERIA has
achieved 40.18 percent
Broadband penetration, the
Minister of Communications
and Digital Economy, Dr. Isa
Alli Ibrahim Pantami has
said.
The minister revealed this
on Thursday, while
inaugurating Broadband
Implementation Steering
Committee, BISC, to
accelerate the attainment of
70 percent broadband
penetration target by 2025 in
Abuja.
Pantami, who expressed
satisfaction with the
contribution of the sector to
the nation’s GDP, described
the contribution as
unprecedented.
“If you look at the
contribution of technology to
our GDP, what we have
Rivers: Promoters of violence shouldn't
escape justice, Abe tells security agencies
PORT HARCOURT—
FORMER Senator
representing Rivers South-
East Senatorial District in
the National Assembly, Sen.
Magnus Abe, has called on
security agencies in the
country to immediately
apprehend and bring to
book the promoters and
architects of violence in
Rivers State.
He said security agencies
should be allowed to carry
out their responsibilities to
our nation without
hindrance, including the
arrest of those behind the
June 21, 2020 threat to
unleash violence and
destroy Rivers State.
Abe, in a statement he
personally signed, said as a
country, Nigeria cannot
indefinitely tolerate
lawlessness, rascality and
impunity, as the greatness
of any nation corresponds
with the hard work and
sacrifice of its citizens.
"Nigerians must be
prepared to put in the hard
work and sacrifice that is
required to build Nigeria
and we must condemn the
unacceptable with one
voice.
“In the words of Boris
Johnson, “No ifs, no buts”.
We must show zero
understanding and
police, along Asa road, later
died at the hospital.
Trouble was said to have
started in the area when the
taskforce team was said to
have accosted a bread seller
who allegedly uses a private
car to sell bread.
Eyewitnesses told
Vanguard that the
policemen were invited by
the bread seller after he
declined to ‘settle’ the
taskforce team who
attempted impounding his
car for using a private car
achieved in the first quota
of 2020 is unprecedented,
the contribution is 14.07%,
so this is a clear indication
that the more there is proper
penetration, the more our
GDP will increase.
“Part of the plan is that we
are targeting at least 90%
of our population in
Nigeria to get access to
broadband. While the
penetration, we are
targeting 70%.
“This has been going
on for sometimes; the time
we started this, the
broadband penetration was
31% but based on the report
released by the NCC just
last week, the broadband
penetration now is 40.18%.
Within that period we
achieved almost 10% of
broadband penetration in
less than a year,” he stated.
He explained that the
new Broadband Plan 2020-
tolerance for evil that is
capable of destroying our
country. What is wrong is
wrong, what threatens our
public peace should be
punished.
Halt Evwreni killings, Ughere tells
FG, Delta govt
U GHELLI—
TRADITIONAL
Prime Minister of Evwreni
Kingdom, Ughelli North
Local Government Area,
Delta State, Chief Joshua
Ughere, has called on the
Federal and the State
Governments to halt the
killings in the kingdom.
He also called for the
"proscription of the Evwreni
community vigilante team
so that a new one can be
set up."
Reacting to the murder of
Sylvester Adjogbe in the
community, Ughere urged
security agents to
investigate the recent
killings in the community,
particularly that of Mr.
Sylvester Adjogbe, and
bring the perpetrators to
book.
Enjoining all illustrious
sons and daughters of the
kingdom to come together
and step into the matter and
for the sale of bread.
A struggle was said to
have ensued as the police
fired sporadic shots which
hit a member of the
taskforce as well as a
passerby. The taskforce
member died on the spot
while the passerby was
said to have gave up the
ghost at the hospital.
The incident, Vanguard
gathered, angered the
youths who had mobilized
to attack the policemen,
but a combined team of
Mopol men and Soldiers stormed
the area and dispersed them.
2025, was designed to
deliver data download
speeds across Nigeria at a
minimum 25Mbps in
urban areas, and 10Mbps
in rural areas, with effective
coverage available to at
least 90% of the population
by 2025 at a price not more
than N390 per 1GB of data
(i.e. 2% of median income
or 1% of minimum wage).
The plan, he said is being
tailored inline with the
pledge by President
Muhammadu Buhari to lift
100 million Nigerians out
of poverty in 10 years,
adding that the plan will
accelerate the aspiration of
the country, as it leap frog
with the rest of the
developed world towards
the widespread
deployment of 5G
technologies, even while it
is yet to achieve significant
4G coverage and adoption.
and violence in our society
should be punished, the security
agencies must be allowed to carry
out their responsibilities to our
nation without hindrance. We
should not just lead, we must lead
by example."
proffer solutions to the
contentious issues, he said
the community has not
known peace since a
traditional ruler was
allegedly wrongly installed
in the kingdom.
He said he had expected
the indigenes of the
kingdom to learn from the
crisis which broke out in the
community in 2000 where
so many people were killed
and many fled the
kingdom.
He said: "Unfortunately, it
was what happened at that
time that is rearing it's ugly
head in the community
again.
"The ancestors of the
kingdom should be
appeased for all the wrongs
that were done in the past
so that we can correct them.
The traditional stool that
was wrongly put in place
should be looked into and
reversed."
