Altario - Bawlf Page 3
Altario
Porterfield Robinson arrived in the Altario area in
1909 where he established the first post office. Founded
in 1919, the name came from the combination of Alberta
and Ontario.
In the past, Altario was a large well-populated community
but is now a hamlet in Special Areas 4 on Sec.
Hwy 899 north of Hwy 12. A school, Kindergarten to
Grade 12, remains as well as a few businesses but no
services. Buildings still standing include the Kreiser’s
Garage, Jake’s Store, the hall, the school, the Alberta
Hotel/Bar, post office, and the church.
Amisk
A village in east central Alberta northwest of
Hughenden and southeast of Hardisty on Hwy. 13. The
name comes from the ‘amisk’, a Cree word for “ beaver”,
and was surveyed by the Canadian Pacific Railway in
1906. Amisk boasts of the oldest registered public
library in rural Alberta. The Amisk population
according to the 2016 census is 84. The village has a
school from Grades 1-3, village office and a convenience
store.
Bashaw
Nestled in the valley near the shores of Buffalo Lake
at the crossroads of Hwy 21 and 53 and centrally located
in Prairie Parkland Country. Being less than a one hour
drive from Red Deer, Stettler, Ponoka, Lacombe and
Camrose makes Bashaw perfectly situated for those
who desire access to larger centers but value the small
town lifestyle. Bashaw was named after Eugene
Bashaw, an original owner of the town site after the
original name, Forster was found to be a community in
Saskatchewan. Today, the Town of Bashaw campground
offers 16 unserviced sites and a dump station.
Bashaw Golf and Country Club, nestled along the
shores of Buffalo Lake, has 20 sites with 30 amp power, a
dumping station, water at the clubhouse and coin operated
shower facilities at the clubhouse. Country 9 Golf &
RV Resort is located at 42251 Hwy 21.
Bawlf
A village located southeast of Camrose founded in
1905 as a stop on the Canadian Pacific Railway line. It
was named after Nicholas Bawlf who was then president
of the Winnipeg Grain Exchange. Many of the
streets and avenues have been given the names of pioneer
families. Bawlf School is a Kindergarten to Grade
12 school that serves a population of approximately 350
students. Jubilee Park Campground is a great option to
get the camping experience and has a ball diamond and
playground.
