Cabaret All Stars at Proud Embankment

Proud Embankment will re-open its Vegas style Cabaret All Stars from

8 August, headlined by the UK’s favourite entertainer Denise Van Outen and

an incredible line up of world-class Circus and Cabaret performers,

including several of Cirque Du Soleil fame.

Cirque du Soleil performer Katherine Would joins the Proud family, as

well as international touring Circus Artist Nadia Lumley, specialising in both

Cyr Wheel and breakdance. Darlings of the Moulin Rouge J’Adore La Vie

will bring their haute couture burlesque to party and the infamous

international burlesque show ghoul, horror diva and Brazilian bombshell

Marie Devilreux is set to astonish. Zoe Marshall will leave audiences

stunned with her rare mouth balancing act and aerial hair hanging, whilst

multi-talented Kat Lilwall will be showcasing her aerial skills, hoop and

chains, fire breathing and contortion and burlesque.

Alex Proud says: ‘London is still the greatest city for entertainment in the

world. We will be welcoming audiences back to the biggest and best

Cabaret experience on Earth. Quite frankly, this is the most important launch

event of my life. I’m prepared to put my neck on the line and be the first to

re-open, because we want our customers to know that they are our priority.

They can trust us to get this right, and to look after their health and safety as

we have been looking after audiences for years.’

The venue has undergone a complete makeover to increase capacity by

50% and ensure maximum social distancing. With a new modern, glass

surround on the upper level at Embankment that ensures clear sightlines

and optimum hygiene, Proud is welcoming customers back in style.

The spectacular showstopper Cabaret All Stars will feature Europe’s most

talented music, cabaret, drag and acrobatic acts, performing exclusively in

the UK’s biggest and most opulent cabaret venue. Each evening, Denise Van

Outen will take to the stage to perform and introduce the audience to the

unforgettable acts. Guests will be treated to a three-course menu with

welcome cocktail while enjoying the spectacle. Drinks on offer throughout

the night include a prohibition-era inspired cocktail menu to match the

glamorous Gatsby-esque venue. Tickets can be booked on 020 7482 3867.

ROGER HOOPER WILDLIFE

PHOTOGRAPHY EXHIBITION ONLINE

Roger Hooper is a photographer who

is passionate about wildlife and the

environment. He has photographed

many extraordinary aspects of our planet

and sees photography as a way of

informing others of the frailty of the

world around us. An important aspect of

Roger’s work is his strong association

with the World Wildlife Fund and he has

photographed a number of their projects.

His photographs have featured in several

WWF publications, in his books Dotted

Plains, Spotted Game, Art in the Wild

and Focus on the Wild, and in a number

of public and private collections.

The exhibition this year will be

available to view on his website blog at

www.rogerhooper.co.uk/blog, where he

will be displaying a collection of his

favourite images from around the globe.

THE NEW FRONT LINE – PHILLIPS’

VIRTUAL AUCTION

This July, in collaboration with British

Vogue, Phillips will premiere the work of

celebrated photographer Jamie

Hawkesworth in a virtual selling

exhibition The New Front Line.

Hawkesworth has selected 27 unique

works which will be made available for

sale for the first time, with all proceeds

going to the National Emergencies Trust.

The portraits hail from his recent

portfolio of front-line workers, which

includes the iconic cover story for

British Vogue’s July 2020 issue. These

unique works will be available for sale at

www.phillips.com as part of a virtual

exhibition, running from 14 to 28 July.

Edward Enninful, Editor in Chief of

British Vogue, said, ‘I am delighted that

Jamie Hawkesworth's images of our key

workers are going to be included in this

important exhibition at Phillips. Vogue’s

July cover stars celebrate a moment in

time when millions of people in the UK

who, in the face of dangers large and

small, put on their uniforms and work

clothes and went to help people.’

Vanessa Hallett, Worldwide Head of

Photographs, said, ‘Jamie Hawkesworth

is an extraordinary talent and we are

honoured to be partnering with British

Vogue to premiere his work in ‘The New

Front Line’.

This exclusive selection offers a fresh

perspective on the sacrifices made by

the extraordinary people working across

the UK in recent times. From postal

workers to midwives, train drivers to

supermarket assistants, teachers to

cleaners and sergeant majors,

Hawkesworth captures some of the faces

who helped keep the country going.

LONDON WALKS BRINGS VIRTUAL

TOURS TO A GLOBAL AUDIENCE

Urban walking tour company, London

Walks, has introduced a range of virtual

tours to bring London to life for a global

audience. Hosted on zoom by

experienced London Walks guides, they

offer an insider’s look into some of

London’s most noted areas. The virtual

tours are interactive and feature unique

photography captured by the London

Walks guides as well as long forgotten

maps and photos, and fun elements like

a quiz or a song from the guide.

Owner of London Walks David Tucker

said: ‘The virtual tours are the result of

the work of a small, self-selected band

of elite guides, particularly Adam Scott,

Karen Pierce Goulding and Simon

Whitehouse. All three are award-winning

guides. London is the most interesting

city in the world. Even though customers

haven’t been able to visit, they still want

to find out about London. Our virtual

tours are a way of meeting that desire.

‘As professional guides, many of us

were worried that our ‘guiding muscles’

would atrophy if we didn’t use them.

I thought virtual tours would be a poor

imitation of a live walking tour. They’re

not. They’ve got their own identity, their

own worth, their own value. They are

enormously powerful and have a magic

in their range that a regular walking tour

does not have.’

Another major benefit of the virtual

tours is that they are accessible to all

with an interest in London and, David

suggests, worldwide appeal. ‘I did a

Kensington Sights and Secrets virtual

tour recently. My ‘walkers’ were in

Canada, Israel, the USA and Germany.

None of them would have been able to

go on a walking tour in London

otherwise.

‘Our virtual tour guests have

predominantly been from the UK, the

US, Canada and Germany. But we’ve

also had Australians. One Oz gal gave

her mum the Beatlemania virtual tour

as a birthday present.’

the works in our collection. We're

particularly pleased to be extending

ELLIE GOULDING UK TOUR

Global superstar Ellie Goulding has

revealed the dates of her forthcoming

Brightest Blue Tour – a special intimate run

of dates set to hit the UK and Ireland in

April and May 2021 following her much

anticipated new album Brightest Blue.

Speaking of the forthcoming tour,

Ellie says: ‘I’m so excited to get back on

the road and do what I do best. This

album has been such a passion project

over the past five years and throughout

the entire process I’ve been able to

picture exactly what the live staging

would look like – intimate, stripped

back, honest, yet incredibly visual and

special. I can’t wait!’

Ellie was a featured performer in

Global Citizen’s charity livestream, ‘One

World: Together At Home’ which aired

on 19 April and raised over £100 million

for the World Health Organisation

response fund. March 2020 marked the

10-year anniversary of Ellie’s debut

album ‘Lights’ which charted at #1 in the

UK and went on to sell over 1.4 million

records globally.

A UN Environment Ambassador, Ellie

is known as a passionate advocate for

environmental protection for our

precious planet and champion of

solutions to the climate crisis. She

mixes this advocacy with her work to

help end homelessness, supporting

The Marylebone Project and fundraising

for other nationwide charities working on

the frontline of the homeless crisis.

OXFORD LIEDER FESTIVAL

TRAILBLAZING APPROACH

The Oxford Lieder Festival will go

ahead this October, with a bold

programme and trailblazing approach to

the challenges currently facing the

classical music industry. Over eight days

and 35 events, the Festival will be fully

live, ticketed, and presented from special

venues in and around Oxford,

completely online. With a roster of

internationally renowned artists and the

pick of the new generation, Oxford

Lieder continues as a pioneering and

innovative champion of the art of song,

and addresses the difficult issue of paid

online classical music head-on with a

new, sustainable model.

At the heart of the Festival will be a

series of livestreamed concerts with

artists including Benjamin Appl, Ian

Bostridge (who will be artist in

residence), Sarah Connolly, Lucy Crowe,

James Gilchrist, Stephan Loges, Carolyn

Sampson, Roderick Williams, and many

others. The festival will explore every

possible advantage of being online:

visiting unique Oxford venues that would

not usually be accessible for concerts;

enhancing the storytelling of song

through carefully planned and

imaginative filming; which people can

begin to explore prior to the Festival;

and bringing audiences even closer to

artists through interviews and live

Q&As, where people will have the

chance to ask the artists questions.

THE PANDORA NETWORK

LAUNCHES NIGHTLIGHT CIRCUS

The Pandora Network is launching a

new online interactive experience in July

called Nightlight Circus, which follows

the hugely successful sold out launch of

the first experience – Burying The

Hatchet, which ran in May 2020.

The Pandora Network is an interactive

week-long mystery solving experience

that guests can take part in from the

comfort of their own home. Guests listen

to the initial brief and over the course of

a week interact online with live ‘Field

Agents’ who provide them evidence and

clues to consider, working together to

solve the case.

The Pandora Network has been

written, produced and performed by

Electric Goldfish, a new creative

partnership between immersive theatre

companies Faceless Ventures, Incognito

Experiences, and Nick Hutson Music.

For anyone that likes the mystery

genre in theatre, television shows or

film, this experience allows participators

to not just watch the mystery unfold but

to be a part of the action themselves.

Each story presents a new and unique

mystery to solve and can be enjoyed

individually or as a continual series,

celebrating everyone’s favourite tropes

from supernatural stories and murder

mysteries. The Pandora Network launched

its first story Burying the Hatchet in May

with audience members ‘tuning in’ from

all around the world and they are now

developing a second episode. The creative

team are also considering a variety of

future formats that will allow audiences to

engage with The Pandora Network in

brand new ways.

ROGER FEDERER AND ON LAUNCH

‘THE ROGER’

Swiss performance running brand

On have released their latest training

shoe, The Roger Centre Court 0-Series.

The release of the tennis inspired trainer

follows the announcement last year of

the tennis great, Roger Federer, joining

the On team and is the first product On

has created together with Federer.

Roger and On set out to re-invent the

classic tennis sneaker with latest comfort

technology. It’s a radical departure from

how most tennis sneakers are still built

with heavy rubber soles. ‘The minimalist

design and easy comfort of On’s shoes

had me hooked years ago. I wanted to

infuse the tennis sneaker with the same

lightness, comfort and agility for every

day,’ comments Federer.

The Roger sneaker features On’s

award-winning CloudTec® sole that

feels exceptionally light and adds On’s

hidden secret – the Speedboard® – for

agile movement. An ultra-soft sock

construction delivers distraction free

comfort and ventilation. ‘I love working

with the On team, using my knowledge

of performance footwear and personal

interest in fashion to contribute to

product development. I’m proud to be a

part of the creation of The Roger, which

is the most comfortable tennis-inspired

sneaker you will ever wear,’ says the

tennis legend.

On and Roger have their homes and

hearts in the Swiss mountains. ‘We love

to explore and aspire to protect the

incredible natural beauty that surrounds

us, hence this new generation of tennis

inspired sneakers has been created with

sustainability in mind’ comments On

Co-Founder David Allemann. The Roger

is crafted from vegan leather and has

been designed for lightness to reduce

material consumption. The result is a

significantly smaller environmental

footprint for this tennis-inspired sneaker.

The vegan leather has approximately

30% of the footprint of animal leather.

VIRGIN MONEY LONDON MARATHON

2020 UPDATE

The Virgin Money London Marathon

have given the latest update on the race

this year, scheduled for 4 October. They

are currently looking at innovative ways

to stage the race, and are hopeful that

they will be able to move ahead the with

the new date.

Event Director, Hugh Brasher, said:

‘Just over 40 years ago, on 26 October

1979, my father Chris Brasher, the

co-founder of the London Marathon,

started his column in The Observer with

these words: ‘To believe this story, you

must believe that the human race can be

one joyous family working together,

laughing together, achieving the

impossible...’

‘From those words, the first London

Marathon was born. While some may

think what we are trying to do on

Sunday 4 October is impossible, we will

not give up hope. The 40th Race should

be a day that shows the best of

humanity. A togetherness, a joy and a

celebration of everything we treasure.’

THE VIRTUAL MARATHON MAJORS

There has been a significant increase

in the number of people lacing up and

taking to the streets recently, and using

running as a way of boosting both their

physical and mental health. Virtual Runs

have become the norm and will continue

to be so for the foreseeable future as

large-scale events are yet to be given the

go ahead.

However, the virtual running market

has become saturated very quickly and,

with little innovation in sight,

RunThrough, the company which

organises large-scale running events

through the year, has been looking for a

refresh. Along with Run for Charity and

a group of other supporting brands and

charities, a new concept has been

designed to recapture the imagination.

The Virtual Marathon Majors has

been created to provide world-class

virtual events with a difference. Instead

of simply running a distance and

receiving a medal, participants can

compete with the world’s best runners,

break world records on their own or with

teams of friends, and don’t need to be

Paula Radcliffe to do it.

With the Virtual Marathon Majors,

the aim is to complete the marathon

distance in lots of different ways,

individually and as part of a team. Every

way you complete it will generate a

marathon time for you, which is added

to the Virtual Marathon Majors

Leaderboard. If you are a 5K specialist,

you can produce a spectacular marathon

time by submitting eight 5Ks to create

your marathon time and distance. There

has been a sub 1 hour 50 minute

marathon time already and Runthrough

expect to see some unbelievable times

achieved as things progress.

There are special challenges to

complete and a set of medals to collect

which make up one large super medal.

The virtual events include Run London,

Run New York, Run Berlin, Run Sydney

and Run Athens. With each event, runners

will receive a goody bag to the challenge,

along with goodies provided by partners

Kind Snacks, Twinings and Love Corn.

Complete the challenges and unlock free

special edition challenges as you go such

as Chicago, Paris and Boston.

This new series hopes to raise

millions of pounds for charities and will

continue to do so after large scale events

begin to go ahead again. It will also offer

a race series of substance for charities to

fall back on.

Charities such as Dreams Come True,

Roald Dahls Children’s Charity, Blesma,

SSAFA and Victim Support have already

pledged their support to the events and

100’s of others are expected to follow in

the coming weeks with the help of Run

for Charity.

Further details of the challenges, the

charities benefiting and how to get

involved, visit the website at

www.virtualmarathonmajors.com

ROYAL SOCIETY SUMMER SCIENCE

EXHIBITION GOES ONLINE

For the first time in its history, the

Royal Society’s Summer Science

Exhibition will not be held in person,

but will instead bring the UK’s most

cutting edge research to the public in a

whole new way, Summer Science online.

During the week-long event, visitors

will get the chance to take part in an

interactive question and answer session

with a panel of space experts as well as

the family friendly big Summer Science

quiz. Test your science knowledge with

Royal Society Fellows including

Professor Brian Cox and special guests

such as space scientist Dr Maggie

Aderin-Pocock, BBC science presenter

Dr Adam Rutherford and Blue Peter

presenter-turned-author Konnie Huq.

Venki Ramakrishnan, President of the

Royal Society, said: ‘The Summer

Science Exhibition is a celebration of the

most exciting research around the UK

where the public are invited in to ask

questions, discover and be inspired.

‘This year, the exhibition is coming to

you in a different form. We have

incredible online events, and brilliant

scientists sharing their research and

testing your knowledge. While I hope we

will all be back at the Society next year,

this is a unique opportunity to try new

approaches and reach an even wider

audience. I hope everyone will join us

throughout the week to explore historic

and cutting-edge science from across

the UK.’

Find out about the science of creating

an artistic masterpiece, doping in sport

or what our pets are really thinking with

an animal cognition scientist – or join

intrepid Antarctic explorers, without ever

having to leave the comfort of your own

home. Other sessions will discover a

hidden world only visible through a

microscope, decipher how chemical

catalysts create sustainable energy,

explore exotic planets orbiting distant

stars and delve into the history of the

Summer Science Exhibition with the

Society’s librarian Keith Moore.

Aspiring weather forecasters and

armchair meteorologists alike can dive

deeper on the Google Arts & Culture

platform, with a six-part online series

from the Royal Society and Met Office

exploring the journey from the roots of

weather lore like ‘red sky at night’,

through early weather science to the

founding of the Met Office and beyond.

‘BECAUSE I’M A LONDONER’ PHOTO

COMPETITION

Visit London have teamed up with

Photocrowd and the Museum of London,

to offer Londoners a chance to showcase

the best of their local area and the

people and places of London, as

restrictions begin to ease. Entrants do

not need to be professional

photographers to join the contest, just

have a phone or camera at the ready.

The free to enter competition, part of

the #BecauseImALondoner campaign,

encourages participants to share what

they love about London. It aims to

encourage residents to safely explore

their own areas. The competition also

offers the capital’s city dwellers a chance

to support their local area, by

highlighting people enjoying nearby

businesses and venues; from markets,

independent shops and hairdressers, to

museums or a legendary community

restaurant and everything in between.

Justine Simmons OBE, Deputy Mayor

for Culture and Creative Industries,

Mayor of London’s Office: ‘Culture and

lifestyle is an integral part of London’s

DNA and is a big reason so many of us

choose to live and work here. This

photography contest offers a chance to

showcase London’s unique character

and dynamism in the current time.’

SCULPTURE BY EVA ROTHSCHILD

TO LAUNCH IN KING’S CROSS

On Thursday 16 July, King’s Cross

will unveil a major public sculpture by

Eva Rothschild in Lewis Cubitt Park.

My World and Your World is the artist’s

first permanent commission in London.

The sculpture is a magnificent addition

to the landscape of the King’s Cross

Estate, which has become known for

playful and immersive installations

across its public spaces. King’s Cross

has now started to welcome workers,

visitors and shoppers back to the estate.

The 16m-high steel sculpture

resembles an inverted tree or lightning

bolt. Descending from a single point, the

structure splits and diverges into branches

which sink into the ground. Referencing

the natural world, it is at once strong and

fragile, and its porosity enables viewers to

move in and around the work. It is painted

in stripes using Rothschild’s distinctive

palette of black, purple, pink, orange,

green and red. The stripes confuse the

eye, seeming to split the solid structure

into a multiplicity of parts.

MINNIE’S WAR: CARING ON THE

HOME FRONT

There will be an opportunity to

discover the fascinating life story of

Minnie Evelyn Windemer, Matron of the

Freemasons’ War Hospital from 1916 to

1919, in a zoom talk from the Museum

of Freemasonry. Challenging family

circumstances led her to forge her own

path and enter nursing, one of the few

respectable careers for women by the

late 19th century. At the outbreak of

World War I, many wives and daughters

joined the workplace for the first time,

replacing men who were fighting in

Europe's trenches.

The talk is introduced by Jane

Nielsen, Interpretation Manager at

Museum of Freemasonry, joined by

Susan Snell, Archivist and Records

Manager, as she describes how Minnie

negotiated her role and earned respect

from patients, nurses, doctors and

freemasons on the home front.

1.5 MILLION ARCHAEOLOGICAL

OBJECTS UNEARTHED BY PUBLIC

Over the passage of time, the British

public have discovered many hundreds of

thousands of archaeological objects, and,

this week, the British Museum has

revealed that the number recorded to its

Portable Antiquities Scheme has hit a

milestone 1.5 million. These finds have

radically transformed what we know about

life through time on the British Isles.

The British Museum’s Portable

Antiquities Scheme (PAS) was first set up

in 1997 so that archaeological objects

found by the public can be recorded to

help advance our knowledge of past. The

item that helped cross this historic

milestone was a medieval lead papal bulla

(a seal for authorising papal documents,

such as edicts and indulgencies) of Pope

Innocent IV (r.1243-54), that was found in

Shropshire.

All the discoveries on the PAS

database since its inception 23 years

ago have been made by members of the

public. Most of them are found buried in

the ground by metal detectorists. Thanks

to the public’s efforts, including those

made through responsible metaldetecting,

our understanding of past

communities living in Britain over

thousands of years has radically

improved. Many individual finds have

transformed what we know almost

overnight and have become some of the

most famous historical objects in the

UK, such as the gold treasures of the

Staffordshire Hoard.

Most objects that are

unearthered are kept by the

people who find them, but a

number of discoveries are so

important to the history of the

life in Britain that they have

been acquired or displayed

by museums for the public

to enjoy.

To celebrate this important

milestone, the British

Museum with BBC History

Magazine have chosen 10

discoveries by the public and

recorded on the PAS which experts have

judged to have most transformed our

knowledge of the past. These include a

silver-gilt badge in the shape of a Boar

found near the site of King Richard III’s

death in battle, and the discovery of

thousands of Roman ‘grots’ – worndown

coins – which has reshaped our

understanding of Roman Britain.

There is a large diversity amongst the

1.5 million discoveries. They range in

size from vast coin hoards – the biggest

was the Frome Hoard of 52,500 coins –

to one-of-a-kind single pieces such as

the 3,500-year-old Ringlemere Cup. The

oldest items include prehistoric-worked

flint from 700,000 years ago; the

youngest include 20th-century military

badges. Recorded finds include

arrowheads, axes, beads, brooches,

buckles, coins, combs, finger-rings,

gaming pieces, knives, sculpture,

spindle whorls, tokens and vervels.

WATCHING ROSIE COMMISSIONED

BY ORIGINAL THEATRE COMPANY

Original Theatre Company’s recent

critically acclaimed, innovative online

production of Rachel Wagstaff’s

adaptation of Sebastian Faulks’s bestselling

novel Birdsong has spurred the

company on to produce another online

production while theatres remain closed

to live performances. Watching Rosie is

a specially commissioned short play by

Louise Coulthard based on her debut

play, Cockamamy, which won the

Lustrum Award for Outstanding New

Play at The Edinburgh Fringe 2017.

The production will star BAFTAwinning

actress Miriam Margolyes, Amit

Shah and Louise Coulthard (pictured

above) and will be directed by Michael

Fentiman.

Watching Rosie is a tender portrayal

of experiencing dementia in lockdown

and the power of love to overcome it.

This heartbreaking and hilarious film

highlights the incredible bond between

Alice (Miriam Margolyes) and her

granddaughter Rosie (Louise Coulthard)

as they face change, confusion and an

unexpected arrival from Tesco.

Watching Rosie will be released free-ofcharge

at 19.00 on 6 August and will be

available until 30 September. Donations are

encouraged in support of Dementia UK.

BREAKFASTS IN CLASSIC BRITISH

BEACH HUTS

Hot on the heels of the UK’s first

purpose-built socially distanced

restaurant, Cornwall’s coastal style hotel,

St Moritz Hotel & Spa, will also be

offering ‘Breakfast at the Beach Huts’ this

summer. The innovative move allows

King room guests the opportunity to

make the most of summer breezes,

enjoying long, delicious, locally-sourced

breakfasts, in the surrounds of a great

British seaside tradition – the perfectlyformed,

stripy beach hut.

The art deco-inspired St Moritz Hotel

& Spa, based just outside Rock in North

Cornwall, recently launched The Anti-

Social Club, the first purpose designed

pop-up restaurant in the UK.

The huts, which overlook the Camel

estuary towards Steppa Point and the

Atlantic beyond, are classic English

seaside in style, with bunting, tables and

chairs, and all are individually named.

LIFE-AFFIRMING BRITISH MUSICAL

THE RHYTHMICS

Metta Theatre and Aria Entertainment

– two of the UK’s leading production

companies devoted to British musical

theatre – are joining forces to produce a

brand-new life affirming musical The

Rhythmics. With book and lyrics by

Metta's Artistic Director Poppy Burton-

Morgan, plus music and lyrics from

Stiles & Drewe award winner Ben

Glasstone, The Rhythmics explores the

crisis of masculinity via a collection of

oddballs belting their way through a

thrillingly catchy guitar led score.

Hapless single-dad Grey is in a rut.

Teenage daughter Silva packs him off to

revive his rockstar dreams, successfully

auditioning for ‘Nick & the Rhythmics'

only to realise... he’s actually signed up

for an All-male Rhythmic Gymnastics

troupe. Against the odds these burly

blokes make it as far as the World

Championships – twirling their ‘ribbons

of fire’ – and along the way Grey finally

learns to commit to life. Calendar Girls

meets Full Monty in this joyous new

British musical.

Thanks to support from Arts Council

England, and a successful Crowdfunder

campaign, the producers have been able

to record the entire cast album under

socially distanced rules in the studio.

Established in 2005 by Poppy

Burton-Morgan and Motley trained

Designer William Reynolds, Metta

Theatre has been at the forefront of new

work, with a strong focus on the

development of new British musical

theatre. Other productions include

Mouthful and Arab Nights. They are

known for combining emotionally

powerful performances with imaginative

theatricality and striking visual style.

JOE ALLEN LAUNCHES A SERIES OF

VIRTUAL CABARET EVENINGS

On Saturday 4 July, Joe Allen, the

New York brasserie and West End

restaurant, launched their first virtual

cabaret evening with a host of well

known guests and musical performances

streamed live into homes worldwide to

raise money for those in crisis in

London’s Theatreland.

As a pillar of the theatre community in

London for over four decades, the Covent

Garden stalwart has teamed up with

Acting for Others, a charity that provides

financial and emotional support to all

theatre workers in times of need through

the 14 member charities. Having provided

solace and sustenance to theatre lovers,

actors and beyond for many years, Joe

Allen now need a helping hand to ensure

that they are able to reopen.

Bringing Broadway to bedrooms for

an evening of celebration, La Voix

compèred the night, known for her

raucous comedy and impressions,

steering from act to act. In true Joe Allen

style, viewers were invited to descend

into a restaurant that came to life in front

of their eyes and recreated the longed for

dining experience with a twist. As the

camera swept through the red velvet

curtains and across the wooden floors,

the famed posters that line the walls of

the much loved restaurant lit up as

familiar faces performed.

To kick off the night, a drinks order

was taken, but here, viewers were

encouraged to create their own Joe Allen

cocktail, having been sent a list of

ingredients prior, during a masterclass

where lead bartender Alex Barbu was

shaking up their signature tipple,

enabling them to sip along for the

duration of the show.

Reminiscent of Sunday Night at the

London Palladium, there were a host of

varied acts, not least a sketch by

Britain’s Got Talent finalist, the comedy

writer and ventriloquist, Steve Hewlett.

The evening also included seasoned

actors Patricia Hodge and Sir Derek

Jacobi and singer Gary Wilmot alongside

West End stars past and present, lending

their voices to the cause as they belted

out famous melodies from the most

popular musicals from award winning

Company to Guys and Dolls, and perhaps

a request or two.

‘Joe Allen has been a long-standing

part of the theatrical community and it is

a pleasure for us to be involved and we

thank them for their support for Acting for

Others. The funds raised will make a

difference to the many beneficiaries of our

fourteen member charities,’ says Acting

for Others co-chair Stephen Waley

Cohen.

‘The West End has been particularly

devastated by the pandemic and without

this support, Joe Allen may not be able to

reopen, as such we wanted to use this

time to shine a light on ourselves and

also others in need in the theatre industry

through Acting for Others. Broadway is in

our blood and we have always been a

home away from home for actors so we

hope that this show will unite our

community and loyal guests for an

evening of fun, laughter and merriment

during these troubled times! We can’t wait

to stand shoulder to sequinned shoulder

with our beloved theatrical family, the

show must go on!’ says General Manager

Cathy Winn.

The show can still be viewed on

youtube, head to their Instagram to get

access to the link plus lots more great

content:@joeallenlondon

the Ayllu community the restaurant pairs

Peruvians flavours with Japanese

influence. This new and inspired menu is

an exciting, unique marriage of traditional

flavours and influences. They have a

fantastic selection of sushi, ceviches, and

some Ayllu classics inclusing dishes

THE CORAL ROOM AT THE

BLOOMSBURY

Now open to the public again, The

Coral Room is a magnificent double

heighted all day bar and restaurant

located at the front of The Bloomsbury

hotel. They offer a range of delicious

food options, English sparkling wines

and a unique cocktail menu that takes

influence from the English countryside.

The Sip of England menu whisks

patrons away to the moors, meadows,

seas and spires of the Great British

outdoors, with each cocktail using

ingredients local to the area they are

inspired by. Guests can also enjoy

healthy plates, delicious bar snacks and

regular live jazz sessions.

Mindful of the original Lutyens

design and the building’s listed status,

the space was sensitively reimagined in

The Bloomsbury refurbishment in 2017.

The original panelled walls have been

retained and given a high gloss lacquer

finish in vivid coral.

A striking feature of the new interior is

the five bespoke Murano glass

chandeliers which have been specially

created for the space. British illustrator

Luke Edward Hall was commissioned by

the hotel’s owner to create 36 original

pieces of art inspired by the surrounding

Bloomsbury area and the architecture of

Lutyens. The bar itself features a

Calacatta marble top with a high gloss

moulded timber front, and the back bar

is complete with an antique mirror and

brass detailing, to reflect the iconic

heritage of the hotel and building. Head

to their website for bookings:

Atul Kochhar’s Kanishka in Maddox

summer truffles, and there’s a great

choice of Gangtok Momos. There will
