Welcome to BIT 2011
Assalamualaikum Warahmatullahi
Wabarakatuh and Greetings,
All praise be to Allah, the Lord of the
Worlds. Peace and blessings of Allah be
upon our Prophet Muhammad and on his
family and companions, and all those who
follow him in righteousness.
Time is rapidly encroaching with less than
a month left in the countdown to the
BIT 2011. As tickets are now being sold,
preparations in terms of performances
and the setup of the Indoor Stadium at
the Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex
are well underway, we are just as excited
as you are in the anticipation for the
performances that will be presented by
participating countries. A salute goes
to the Royal Brunei Armed Forces for
the celebration of its 50th Anniversary
of its establishment. We are especially
proud to present bands and performances
from Brunei Darussalam, Australia, the
People’s Republic of China, the Republic of

Indonesia, Malaysia, the Islamic Republic
of Pakistan, the Republic of Philippines,
the Republic of Singapore, the Kingdom
of Thailand, the United Kingdom, and the
United States of America.
The BIT 2011, offers an exciting
spectacular pageantry and stirring family
entertainment, while also providing a
unique opportunity for our local bands
to showcase their talents and tradition.
The participation of bands from other
countries aims to enhance the connection
of our local bands to the international
community as it honours the virtues of
military service in general and the tradition
that represents the highest accountability
and commitment of a citizen to their
community at home and across the world
for many years to come.
Of course, it would be impossible to present
the BIT 2011 without the generosity of

individual donors and volunteers. We are

Greetings
Readers!
As I sit at my desk in the Brunei Darussalam International Tattoo 2011 (BIT 2011)
Marketing Office, preparing yet again another issue of the BIT 2011 Newsletter.
I have to admit I felt anxious wondering how the second issue will go. Having
received a ‘Well Done’ remark from the BIT 2011 Chairman himself on the first
publication, I felt an immense amount of pressure to achieve or hopefully surpass
that standard.
Of course, an extending gratitude goes to the Freelance writers, Brunei
Photographic Society and not forgetting the ever-so-patient Chief Editor for the
success of the first Issue. So well done team and keep up the good work! Don’t
forget we have another two issues to go, so keep the spirit up, for our job is not
done yet.
All in all, it is indeed an honour to be producing a Newsletter for an international
event such as the BIT 2011. It feels incredible to be part of BIT 2011. And, the best
part? You can be too!
I urge everyone to come and purchase your tickets now, available now at the
ticketing kiosk at the main entrance of the Indoor Stadium Hassanal Bolkiah
Sports Complex. The Marketing Committee is also aiming to sell tickets at main
shopping complexes in the following weekends. Come join us and bring your loved
ones in this family event that will give you ultimate amazing performances from
11 countries such as Brunei Darussalam, Australia, People’s Republic of China,
the Republic of Indonesia, Malaysia, Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Republic
of Singapore, the Kingdom of Thailand, United Kingdom and United States of
America.
If you have missed the Brunei Darussalam International Tattoo held in 2006, this

Feature Band:
Royal Brunei Armed Forces Band
INITIALLY established at Port Dickson,
Malaysia with only 21 members, the Royal
Brunei Armed Forces Band was formed on
the memorable date of 31 May 1962. On 1
January 1984, Maj (R) Haji Manaf bin Haji
Kamis made history when he became the
first local to led the RBAF band holding
the position of Band Director. Under his
leadership he recruited more locals and
composed legendary patriotic songs which
are still aired up till this day.
Now 49 years forward, the legacy of Maj
(R) Haji Manaf bin Hj Kamis is carried
on by Maj (R) Haji Daud bin Mat Noor in
1991. This was followed by Maj Awg Jaya
bin Metussin from 2003 up till this day,
who never fails to lead the RBAF band in
outstanding performances during national
and international events.
The RBAF band has always made Brunei
Darussalam proud, as seen from their
participation in international military
tattoos like The Edinburgh Military Tattoo

Scotland, back in 1970, Brunei Darussalam
International Tattoo 2006 and Military
Music Festival Berlin and Cologne in 2009
to name a few.
The RBAF band’s participation in this
year’s BIT 2011 are also joined by the 1st,
2nd and 3rd Battalion Royal Brunei Land
Force Pipes and Drums. These two bands,
in the past, have always been included as
part of the RBAF band, both at national
and international levels.

BIT 2011 tickets have been selling like hot cakes ever since it was opened to the public from 1 st May at 10 authorized TelBru and
B-Mobile outlets. BIT 2011 Marketing Committee has allocated the 10 outlets in all the four districts in such a way that it will give equal
opportunities for all walks of life across the nation to purchase it.
As such, the BIT 2011 Committee have been sending their ticket sellers to all these booths, be it as close as in the venue itself at the
Indoor Stadium Hassanal Bolkiah Sports Complex to as far as the TelBru/B-Mobile ticket booth in Temburong.
Below are the snippets of the daily routine of two military personnel, Cpl (U) Norasrin bin Hj Salim and Cpl (U) Zainuddin bin Hj Silin,
tasked to man the BIT 2011 ticket booth at Bangar, Temburong.

I don’t mind waking up early and traveling to Temburong everyday,
bringing BIT 2011 as simple as putting up a poster is a rewarding
experience in itself. It all pays off when people began to ask a lot of
questions. It shows that we’ve succeeded in promoting BIT 2011.

Roadshow Opens Up Festive
Opportunities Across Nation

THE BIT 2011 Roadshows will be the opportunity for all
districts to organize their own festivities on the Sunday
of 29 May 2011. These were mentioned by the BIT 2011
Producer, Lt Col Hj Salleh bin Hj Suhaili during a Roadshow
Meeting at the indoor Stadium Hassanal Bolkiah Sports
Complex on 25 April 2011.
The Roadshows will serve as a sneak preview to locals of
what to expect come the big day lasting from 31 May till 2nd
June. Conducted from 4pm onwards, it promises more than
an hour of engaging musical military band performances
from the BIT 2011 participants. Thus giving each districts
ample opportunity to organize their own activities in the
morning and afternoon of the event. As such, the BIT 2011
Producer has suggested for each district should to take
advantage of this opportunity by organizing their own
activities at the same day.
The meeting that morning was first to be held and will be
followed up with meetings between the Roadshow Co-
Chairmen both from BIT 2011 and District Offices on a later date.
Present during the meeting were BIT 2011 Head of Roadshow Lt
Col (L) Norshahrinizam bin Hj Talib and Roadshow Co-Chairman
both from BIT 2011 Organizing Committee and District Offices.

Deputy Defence Minister Lauds Brunei’s
BIT 2011 performance preview
THE time and effort put into perfecting
and polishing their routines for the
Brunei Darussalam International Tattoo
(BIT 2011) earned performers from the
Royal Brunei Armed Forces (RBAF) and
associated agencies, a high praise from
the Deputy Minister of Defence, Dato
Paduka Hj Mustappa bin Hj Sirat.
Calling it a mixture of song, dance
and orchestral music performances
from international talents, the Brunei
Darussalam International Tattoo linedup
for 2011 promises a colourful and
spectacular show that lives beyond its
expectation in commemorating the RBAF
Golden Jubilee Anniversary. The Defence
Deputy Minister congratulated everyone
involved and urged them to continue on
refining their acts.

His comments came following the
Performance Preview for the Defence
Executive Committee (DEC) members
held on 2nd May 2011. The event was one
of the few previews showcased prior to
the BIT 2011 on 31st May 2011, with the
aim of improving the overall performance
of the Brunei contingent.
Showcased during the preview were
orchestral pieces by the RBAF military
band, national and popular song renditions
by the choir and lead singers backed
by the orchestra and an accompanying
band, as well as dance and martial arts
performances. Also featured were fancy
footwork and twirling batons, colourful
dresses and props used by dancers from
the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports
and short comedy skits, which the public
can look forward to during the BIT 2011.
The DEC Performance Preview took place
a few days after a similar preview was
held for the Commander of the RBAF.
According to the BIT 2011 Head Producer,
Lt Col Hj Salleh bin Hj Suhaili, the previews
are an opportunity to get feedback on
strengths and shortcomings of the
performances lined up for BIT 2011, so
that improvements can be made. About
150 people are involved in the Brunei
performances and have been practicing
intensively for this special event.

sneak preview during TelBru Panna KO Challenge

TIME is of the essence; with 23 days left,
the BIT 2011 Organizing Committee took
the opportunity to treat their adoring fans
a preview of what is expected during the
tattoo performances starting on the night
of 31st May until the last show in the
afternoon of 2 nd June 2011. In the midst
of Gadong’s busy shopping central, The
Mall, 17 members of the Pipes and Drums
from the 2nd and 3rd Battalion of the
Royal Brunei Land Force marched in tune
with a drumline into the centre of the mall
spurred on by the applause and cheering
of the public.
Conducted on a Sunday weekend, 8th
of May 2011, the 15 minutes preview
showcased eight songs which included
various malay songs as well as the
Malaysian traditional song “Dikir Putri”.
At the end of the preview, it was clear
that the performance did not disappoint
the public, but instead left them wanting
more.
The preview was conducted during
TelBru’s Panna KO Challenge, a street
soccer game, conducted at the venue
between the 6th to the 8th of May 2011.
According to Deputy Head of Marketing
Maj (U) Schufin bin Hj Brahim, BIT 2011
Official Broadband Provider, TelBru has
generously given them a slot for the
performance during the challenge to help
promote the upcoming BIT 2011 event.
Tickets for BIT 2011 are available to the
public in all districts across the sultanate
from the 1st to the 15th of May 2011.
Ranging from BND 5, BND 10, BND 15 and
BND 20 the tickets are sold at the Kadai
Telbru in The Mall Gadong, Tanjong Bunut
and also at the TelBru Headquarters in the
Belait, Tutong and Temburong Districts
until Sunday, 15 May 2011. Tickets are
also being sold at at various B-Mobile
Care Centres in all four districts. However,
ticket sales after 15 th May 2011 onwards will
then be centered at the Indoor Stadium
Main Entrance.
