2
Dear Members and Friends
March has been
a very full month for RAS
events, thanks to our speakers and hosts, and
Michelle for putting together the terrific
programme. Two trips: one to Suzhou and the
second to Jinze, were both highly enjoyable and
informative, you can read about these and our
other activities later in this issue. The photos
on this page are of our visit to Deke Erh’s
Visual Documents Centre at Jinze.
Having just returned from our Weekender Lecture, I
am reminded that RAS offers not only a platform to
hear interesting speakers on diverse topics, but also
affords an opportunity for members and friends to
socialize. We had three new members join us and two
of these had been in Shanghai for some time and
were delighted to have just ‘discovered’ us!! We are
very pleased to welcome them and all our recent new
and renewal members.
We have lined up another interesting
programme for April, and we are also
considering organizing two trips later in the
year, but would like to have
some feedback from you first,
so do let us know if you would be interested in attending either of
these particular activities.
Our special focus groups continue to flourish and for those music
lovers amongst you, we have included a couple of notices that may
be of interest. Both Sophie and Edward are long time supporters
of RAS.
Enjoy the welcome Spring sunshine and we look forward to
seeing you at our April events.
MARCH EVENTS
Considering the complimentary and competitive events of
the various Literary Festivals in and around China in
March, RAS events were again very well attended. RAS
Modern Chinese History Study Group, RAS Film Club and
RAS Book Club (pictured right) continue to draw regular
and new members to the RAS, for which we are delighted.
To new members and friends; a very warm
welcome and to our regular supporters many
thanks for your continued interest in our
focus groups and the main programme.
The insight into Liu Kang’s personal life as an
artist, with particular focus on the Shanghai
years, brought another perspective in our
investigation of Chinese Art. Sharing images and stories
of his times, Gretchen Liu, his daughter-in-law,
enlightened us to this aspect of the untold story.
An intrepid group of Shanghailanders, including our
President, Katy Gow and RAS Hong Kong Officer,
Michael Broom, left Shanghai in grey but dry
conditions to make the journey by bus to Suzhou for
the celebration of the RAS Suzhou Chapter’s 1 st
Anniversary where we were welcomed by Bill
Dodson, VP Suzhou. Despite the drenching conditions
of our journey, Jonathan Fenby entertained and
educated us on the early years of Chiang Kai Shek’s
life as well as warming and enlivening the reception
for the anniversary occasion. Mr Fenby’s second appearance,
covering the second part of Chiang’s life, is eagerly anticipated.
Alice Xin Liu and Eric Abrahamsen’s fresh and novel
approach to translation, managing and editing China’s first
English language publication of an old magazine on new
Chinese literature in the country’s quest for soft power,
was enlightening for our audience which included a group
of New York University students. For those of you
interested in continuing the pursuit of contemporary
Chinese literature, Eric has advised that there is a web
page for Pathlight magazine on Paper Republic where you
4
After a record number of consecutive wet and grey days, the sun shone (in more ways than one), Deke
Erh, his wife Liling and our esteemed member Tess Johnston, were incredible hosts for our RAS
Weekender, in the practically untouched and less known water town of Jinze. Our bus driver’s schedule to
carry a larger group of people later in the day, meant that we were able to accommodate a few more than
expected members and guests on this experience of a walk along the canal and through the village, to a
picnic lunch held in the ambling complex of Deke’s
individual vision and efforts, having collected,
established and built this unique research centre.
The insights into late Qing dynasty legal codes,
dialogues and commentaries on homicide and
homosexual rape of the period
held the attention and focus of
an intimate audience during
Jeffrey Riegel’s lecture on
the subject. After both the
audience and speaker were treated to a host of interesting questions, answers and
dialogue.
We would like to thank our contributors; Gretchen Liu of Singapore, Jonathan Fenby of
London, Alice Xin Liu and Eric Abrahamsen of Beijing, Jeffrey Riegel of Australia and
Michael Tsang, Deke Erh and Tess Johnston of Shanghai for their presentations. Their
support and contributions have made this past month’s
programme rich and diverse, creating depth to
the fabric of our lives in Shanghai.
This past month has seen special efforts which
are due thanks; Bill Dodson for hosting a record
group at the 1 st anniversary celebration and
Michael Broom for joining us from RAS Hong
Kong for both the RAS Weekender and RAS Film
Club. We appreciate your support.
Last, but by no means least, thanks are due to
Katie Baker, Linda Johnson and Sandy Strand for
their time, efforts and dedication in the focus
groups as well as support for the programme.
To members and
friends of the RAS we thank you for your
support and look forward to continuing
attendance of our April events.
We will look at addressing acoustics in some
of our venues and ask you for your support
in letting us know if there is something you
would like us to cover. If you can make a
suggestion as regards presentations, venues
and formats for the future, these would be
most welcome.
RAS FILM CLUB LAST MONTH…
Zhang Yang’s Lou Ye Gui Gen or Getting Home, last month’s film,
brought another full house to the film club. A black comedy come
road movie, Zhao’s adventurous trip from Shenzhen to Chongqing
with his dead friend in tow, brought laughter and compassion to Chai
Bites. The actor playing Zhao, Zhou Benshan, is familiar to a Chinese
audience as a stand-up comedian and a regular star of television
drama, and was considered by the audience to be perfectly cast as he
convincingly played an unlikely hero. Everyone agreed that the most
stunning aspect of the film was not only the landscape but also the
way Zhang Yang effectively provided a commentary on China’s
poverty without offending the censors. All of the cameo roles were
also praised for their depth of character and for the performances
given by actors who all have proven reputations in Chinese film.
Other comments raised the theme of love of country and the
continuing value of family, both of which are revealed throughout the
film. Altogether a life-affirming movie that packages many of China’s
contemporary problems into a creative and entertaining bundle.
Getting Home was based upon a true story and THIS MONTH’s
offering takes us a step closer to a full-blown documentary. Lu
Chuan’s Kekexilin or Mountain Patrol takes the story of a voluntary
Tibetan wildlife patrol reported in the newspapers and turns it into an
emotional and beautiful movie. A Beijing reporter travels to Tibet to
meet the patrol leader and accompany them on one of their patrols
protecting the endangered Tibetan antelope from poachers. The film
is engaging, captivating the viewer with extraordinary landscapes that
are beautiful but brutal and with a story that has the same
characteristics. The Tibetan actor Duo Bujie plays the leader of the
patrol brilliantly. He is rugged, full of machismo, but compassionate
and dedicated. Only two other professional actors appear in the film,
the other characters being played by local recruits. Filming in the
harsh landscape made the making of the film a life-threatening
enterprise and this resonates into the film itself. There are some
disturbing scenes as the patrol encounters the poachers who kill and
skin antelopes for commercial gain but this docudrama is not an
account of good and evil, but an exploration of the complexity of life
in China’s outer reaches.
Book early to be sure of a seat!
See you there!
Monday 16 th APRIL
Our March meeting featured a lively and intimate group of 15-mostly
people new to the RAS and to the RAS Book Club. We discussed The
Maker of Heavenly Trousers with this book’s editor, Michael Tsang of
Penguin.
While Midnight in Peking (January 2012 book selection), was set in pre-
World War II Peking, this book is set in Peking after the fall of the Qing
Dynasty. It recreates life among the multi-lingual foreigners (living
outside the Legation District) and the household entourage (an extended
Chinese family called the five virtues).
We enjoyed hearing the particular things that interested Michael about the book including the focus on
religion, the romance and risque lives of the main characters and his favorite line: “Yet it was only one
tiny baby who had died of all the millions in China”.
With a smaller group, we were able to talk more in-depth with Michael about his role in editing and fact
checking of a book written in 1912 (and published in 1935) where the author was no longer alive.
16 Apr 2012 The Opium War Julia Lovell
The Opium War is both the story of modern China (starting with the first conflict with the West) and an
analysis of the country’s contemporary self-image. It explores how China’s national myths mould its
interactions with the outside world, how public memory is spun to serve the present; and how delusion
and prejudice on both sides have bedeviled its relationship with the modern West.
Julia Lovell teaches modern Chinese history at Birkbeck College, University of London. She is the author
of: The Great Wall: China Against the World and The Politics of Cultural Capital: China’s Quest for a
