Exhibitions
Jack Butler Yeats;
Salt Water Ballads
Thu. 3 Jun. – Sun. 29 May 2022
We are proud to celebrate
the 150th anniversary of the
birth of Jack Butler Yeats in
his home town of Sligo. This
very special exhibition entitled
Salt Water Ballads, showcases
for the first time, a suite of 21
newly conserved, sea-themed
watercolours, as well as Yeats’
own collection of model boats.
These pieces were generously
gifted to The Model in 2018 by a
private donor, and were conserved
thanks to support from the
Heritage Council in 2020. New
original artworks by Yeats were
revealed during the conservation
process, and they will be on view,
alongside several other maritime
works, for visitors to enjoy in
public for the very first time.
These works tell the fascinating
story of Theodore, the Pirate,
a character invented by Yeats,
and documented in several of
his artworks and stories. The
show will also give audiences
the chance to view for the first
time, the tiny figure of Theodore,
which was discovered during
the conservation process stowed
away in one of the model boats.
Jack Butler Yeats;
Assembled Memories
Thu. 3 Jun. – Sun. 12 Sep. 2021
We are delighted to present a
selection of works by Jack Butler
Yeats from one of the most
exciting holdings of his paintings
in existence. Sligo’s Municipal
Collection, named after the
visionary Nora Niland, includes
some of the finest work by Yeats
across every phase of his long
creative practice. This exhibition
focuses on the artist’s work in
oils, from politically themed
paintings of the 1920s to his late
great visionary masterworks of
the 1940s & 50s. Each year, The
Model casts new light on the long
career of Jack Butler Yeats, and
activates The Niland Collection
through new visual art, music
and performance commissions, as
well as through specially curated
programmes for children in
schools, and events for people of
all ages.
Alison Pilkington;
I Build My Own Island
Sat. 10 Jul. – Sun. 26 Sep. 2021
The Model is pleased to present
an exhibition of fresh and exciting
new works by Sligo-born painter,
Alison Pilkington. Pilkington’s
practice taps into an inner world
of personal experiences to conjure
up strange and unsettling worlds
where all is not entirely at ease.
Humour and the absurd abound
in strange unsettling landscapes,
where bizarre figures are
recurring motifs. Her work draws
on a variety of eclectic influences
from ‘high’ and ‘low’ culture - from
the classical painting of the 17th
century western traditions to the
writing of Stephen King and the
humourist Ivor Cutler, and the
stories of James Joyce.
Signals & Circuits – curated by
aemi
Thu. 12 Aug. – Sun. 10 Oct.
Signals & Circuits is a gallery
screening programme of
artists films featuring work
by Jenny Brady, Jussi Eerola,
Laura Fitzgerald, John Smith,
Deborah Stratman, and Yoga
For The Eyes curated by aemi.
Taking the ‘circuit’, with all
of its possible meanings, as
a conceptual framework, this
screening programme, considers
interconnected ideas relating
to communication, travel and
technology. In the selected films,
intimate or ordinarily private
thoughts are vocalised, and acts of
speaking or mis/over-hearing, take
on significances other than those
originally intended. This gives rise
in several instances to concerns
about illicit societal control and
surveillance, and emphasises
the political and cultural value of
speaking out, either to express
an inner voice or strengthen the
power of collective struggle.
