///// ANZAC CENTENARY 2014–2018
However, when it came to
commemorating the four-year
centenary of the First World War,
the Queensland Government learned
that many were unaware of its
significance, and were even less
sure of how to get involved.
The government wanted to find a
fitting way to honour our servicemen
and women. So together with a local
Brisbane agency, Engine Group,
a campaign was developed to raise
awareness of the Anzac Centenary
and improve people’s appreciation
of the role Queensland played
in the First World War.
///// LEGACY PROJECT
Today, enhancements to the
undercroft areas are bringing the
past into the present to create a
lasting heritage for all Queenslanders
and future generations. The area
contains the First World War gallery,
the Second World War gallery,
and the Post-World War II and
exhibition gallery (formerly the
RSL headquarters).
Opened on Armistice Day in 1930
the state memorial contains the
Shrine of Remembrance and the
Eternal Flame held in a bronze urn.
8 / Salute Issue 1
Under a common theme of
‘How will we serve their memory?’
this campaign featured current
Australian Defence Force personnel
reading century-old letters and
telegrams from the war front written
by Queenslanders who served
in the First World War. These letters
helped Queenslanders understand
and empathise with those who
served and encouraged people
of all ages to take action and find
how they could become involved
during the Anzac Centenary.
The Queensland Government
wishes to express its sincere
gratitude and appreciation to the
Australian Defence Force for their
support and participation in the
campaign. Thanks must also go to
the John Oxley Library, State Library
of Queensland and Queensland
State Archives for their insight,
research and expertise. Without this
collaboration, the campaign would
not have been possible.
Visit www.qld.gov.au/anzac100

letters featured in this campaign.
It was always a place for the people,
with its original construction paid
for by donations from ordinary
Queenslanders who were themselves
facing difficult times in the years
between the First World War and
the Great Depression.
Sadly, over the years, the treasured
memorial had suffered structural
erosion from water damage.
While this type of damage is not
uncommon for buildings of this
era, if not addressed, the damage
could have threatened the future
of this unique and much-loved
state memorial.
Early works began in 2014 and have
been timed to coincide with the
Anzac Centenary. While no longer
visible to the eye, repairs to the
water-damaged sub-structure that
supports the memorial, along with
waterproofing of the interior, has
added at least another 75 years to the
lifespan of this significant memorial.
Careful management of the Eternal
Flame was a key consideration
during initial works, with the flame
being relocated within the parklands
to ensure it lived up to its name.
The stage two restoration included
the return of the Eternal Flame
back to its original location with
an improved gas system.
Further construction and
refurbishments have also been
undertaken to the pedestrian tunnel
linking Anzac Square to Central
Station, and enhancements made
to the Shrine of Remembrance.
These works have also involved
repairs to stonework and ironwork,
installation of drains, new tiles

protection and new pavers
throughout the square.
The restoration elements, due
for completion in 2016, involve
refurbishment and enhancement
of heritage spaces beneath the
Shrine. It is intended the space
will include a display of historical
artefacts from post Second World
War, and an exhibition gallery
dedicated to Queensland’s
military history. Enhancements
will also include the curation

Completion of these essential
works has been made possible
by the Queensland Government’s

Future works will also benefit
from a substantial contribution
from the federal government’s

///// COMMEMORATIVE EVENT
4 / Salute Issue 1
///// COMMEMORATIVE EVENT
18 / Salute Issue 1
Instead, the telegram that
Premier Digby Denham received
on 5 August 1914 set in motion
Queensland’s response to the
First World War. It also set the
standard of dedication and sense
of duty that would become the
hallmark of the state’s servicemen
and women up to the present day.
Britain’s declaration of war actually
occurred the evening before,
at 11 pm, Tuesday 4 August 1914,
but due to distance and the
telecommunications of the era,
Queensland received the news the
following day. When Premier Denham
received a telegram from Australia’s
Prime Minister Joseph Cook, he
responded immediately stating that
‘…Queensland unreservedly places
all her resources at service of [the]
Commonwealth and Mother Country’.
This historic declaration was
commemorated exactly a century
later at a memorial service on
5 August 2014 at Parliament
House in Brisbane. To mark the
commencement of the Queensland
Anzac Centenary, the Premier
of Queensland recited the
‘European War’ section of the 1914
Parliamentary Hansard in Parliament.
The 1st AIF, Australian Light Horse Association
commemorative ride, 27 September 2014.
Following the reading, a ceremony
on the Speaker’s Green at Parliament
House enabled guests to learn about
our history and reflect on the courage
and sacrifices. The telegram, as well
as other original documents and
letters, were on display as part of
an exhibition curated by Queensland
State Archives.
The commemoration was attended
by the relatives of veterans and those
who had served with distinction
in other conflicts. Among them
was Vietnam veteran Keith Payne,
a recipient of the Victoria Cross (VC),
the highest decoration for gallantry
‘in the presence of the enemy’, due to his
heroic actions during the Vietnam War.
The memorial event gave rise to many
emotions, probably best summed up
in an extract and joint message by the
Premier and the Queensland Advisory
Committee for the Commemoration of
the Anzac Centenary (QACCAC) Chair,
Captain Andrew Craig RAN (Retired),
published in the Sunday Mail:
‘The centenary of the First World War
is a significant international event,
but it will also have special relevance
for many communities across
Queensland...
Members of the Australian Light Horse Association on the
Speaker’s Green at Parliament House, Brisbane.
For a century, Queenslanders
have reflected on stories of
courage, resilience and sacrifice
that immortalised the Anzac spirit.
Now is the time to ensure all is done
to commemorate the commitment
and sacrifice of all servicemen
and women and those who served
on the home front...
We encourage everyone during this
time to reflect upon and learn more
about our military history, its costs
and its impacts on us, as a state
and as a nation.’

Honoured to be
serving their memory
No one could deny that
Queenslanders are fiercely
proud of their Anzacs.
Up before the sun to pay
their respects at the dawn
service each Anzac Day and
faithfully wearing poppies
on Remembrance Day as
a salute to the fallen and
those left behind.
The declaration:
how Queenslanders
heard the news
It was a telegram that told
Queenslanders they were
at war. It would go on to be
called the ‘war to end all wars’
but that title proved to be
tragically optimistic.
The eternal life:
Anzac Square
memorial
The Anzac Square War Memorial and Parkland is one of
Queensland’s most significant sites dedicated to the memory
of our servicemen and women in all wars, and hosts various
commemorative ceremonies. The centrally located square is
a Brisbane icon and a peaceful sanctuary for reflection within
the capital’s busy business district.
Bringing the
journey to
Gallipoli to life
It became an unforgettable moment in history when the
Queensland contingent of the First Australian Imperial Force
(1st AIF) departed on 24 September 1914 to serve the mother
country. More than 1500 men from two of Queensland’s
most iconic military units, the 9th Infantry Battalion and the
2nd Light Horse Regiment, travelled from various locations,
including the Enoggera Barracks, to arrive at Pinkenba Wharf.

Task: To create a respectful commemorative publication worthy of the Qld Anzac Centenary commemorations. A unique logotype was designed to signify solum respect and significance. A bronze foil was used to lend
prestige to the publication and highlight the importance of the event. The uncoated stock is evocative and adds an element of rawness.

or single page collateral. The image should be action
oriented and ideally including diverse people.
Graphic elements
Three graphic elements support the brand.
White stripes
The lines graphic should always appear in white
(60% opacity) and be a proportionally similar size to
the layout examples on pages six and seven. No more
than two groups of lines should appear on a single

the white stripes should roughly form a corner
of a square with one side being parallel to
the straight lines and the other edge being
perpendicular to the straight line.
• not be altered in any way—no italics, bold or underline
• be punctuated as shown
• appear in the correct colour —80% black or white

RACQ CareFlight 2006 Year in review – 25th Anniversary Edition
CAREFLIGhT MEDICAL SERVICES
CareFlight Medical Services (CMS) employs the specialist emergency, anaesthetic and intensive care
doctors to fly with RACQ CareFlight at the Toowoomba and Gold Coast bases. CMS is also contracted
by Queensland health to provide retrieval doctors, equipment and resources to air medical fixed and
rotary wing retrieval services across Queensland, at bases in Brisbane, Townsville, Mackay and Cairns.
CMS is an accredited training facility for the Australasian
College of Emergency Medicine, the Australian and New
Zealand College of Anaesthetists and the Joint Faculty of
Intensive Care Medicine.
In its commercial capacity, CMS staffs the Lear 36A and
the Falcon 10 jets located at RACQ CareFlight’s Gold Coast
base. The jets provides domestic and international medical
retrievals. With the medical and operational teams located at
the Gold Coast airport, customs clearance is immediate. The
jet is tasked to retrieve patients throughout Australia, Asia and
the Pacific.
CMS senior doctors also staff the southern Queensland
Clinical Coordination Centre, which is responsible for
coordinating all air medical retrievals in southern Queensland.
CMS employs over 70 specialist medical staff across Queensland.
ReAR view: dr Phil Kay, director of emergency Medicine, Princess Alexandra hospital
I was working in the Emergency Department
at the Gold Coast Hospital. I began attending
helicopter surf patrols as an observer.
Eventually I was able to scrounge together
some medical equipment and a resuscitation
box for the helicopter.
Back then I was the sole doctor flying
with CareFlight until I talked some ICU and
“I had gotten a fair bit of experience working
Anaesthetic mates to join in. We did a lot of
in pre-hospital care systems after working in
car accidents where the patient was trapped
the United Kingdom. In the United Kingdom
in the vehicle. We were able to get medical
back in those days they were performing
equipment and a specialist emergency doctor
roadside medical retrievals called “flying
to the patient while they were still trapped
squads”. But when I returned to Australia in
in the car and it really made a difference. We
1982, this field of medicine was all very new.
saved a lot of lives.
It wasn’t easy, because a lot of people thought
we were a bunch of cowboys. Safety was
always important to us, but because it was
such a new thing, there weren’t the rules and
regulations that are in place now – it was
pretty ad hoc. The helicopter was very small.
I used to have to sit on the crewman’s lap en
route to hospital if the patient was big!
I was with CareFlight from the early 1980’s
until early 1990’s. It really is a young man’s
game, but I didn’t want to give it away. I was
still flying casually with air medical retrieval
services out of Brisbane up until a few
years ago.

Mission to st geoRge
In April 2006, Palm Beach resident Judy Gray set out on a five-day
bus tour to western Queensland and Lightning Ridge with a group
of friends. When they arrived in St George at the end of day one,
Judy felt a little tired, so she sent her husband Neville off to dinner
with the rest of the group while she stayed in the motel room to get
some rest.
When Neville returned, Judy had deteriorated and was extremely
ill. Neville immediately called an ambulance to take her to the
St George Hospital.
Judy had been fine leading up to that point, in fact she had been to
the gym just two days before the bus trip. When Judy was diagnosed
with stomach cancer, the CareFlight Medical Services jet was called
out to St George to urgently transport Judy to the John Flynn Hospital
at Coolangatta.
Doctors told her this rare condition affected just seven people in
1 million, and it mainly affected men. Judy had always been very
healthy, taking no medications or tablets. In fact, she says she felt
no pain at all through the entire ordeal.
Judy went into surgery to remove her stomach, pancreas and spleen.
She was back on her feet within a few months, and athough she lost
a bit of weight from her illness, she is already back at the gym. Judy
said it was a huge shock being diagnosed with such a serious illness.
“I’m normally fit and healthy, I go to the gym three times a week.
It took me so long to understand what had happened. I just kept
thinking – is this really me, am I really going through this. It was so
hard to believe it.”

Queensland
Thank you Queensland
Gwen and Joe Braga,
Corinda
After many years of selflessly giving to her community,
Gwen Braga found herself in need of assistance when
her home was inundated by the floods that devastated
much of South East Queensland over summer.
Gwen has had a long involvement with the Meals
on Wheels community organisation, first as a volunteer
and since 2008 as Queensland President
of the organisation.
Her compassion and dedication to making a positive
difference in people’s lives is well-known, and when
the floods hit she needed all of her Queensland spirit
to get through.
Gwen and her husband Joe were devastated when
they saw what the floodwaters had done to their home
in Corinda, in Brisbane’s western suburbs. They lost
everything when the Brisbane River rose to the level
of their roof.
The Bragas, who describe themselves as flood
survivors, are very thankful for the $79,700 in
assistance they received from the Premier’s Disaster
Relief Appeal.
“Our sincerest thanks to all those who donated
to the Appeal. Words cannot express our gratitude.
Without this money we wouldn’t have been able to
start rebuilding our home,” Joe said.
The Bragas have almost finished their repairs and look
forward to moving back home very soon.
Fund on track to be distributed by end of August
The distribution of more than $273 million from the
Appeal to over 40,000 flood and cyclone victims will be
one of the fastest relief fund distributions on this scale
in Australia’s history.
More than $201 million has already been paid from
the fund, including $10 million to St Vincent de Paul.
More than $119 million has been paid to over 3200
people whose homes suffered structural damage or
were completely destroyed to help them rebuild.
Almost 1500 applications were received in the week
before the 30 June cut-off.
All the money will be allocated by the end of August 2011.
The Appeal will remain open for donations until the end
of the year, with funds received after 30 June allocated
to St Vincent de Paul and the Building Services
Authority for distribution.
A message of thanks from the Premier
Some six months on
from our summer of
sorrow, Queensland
and Queenslanders are
bouncing back.
Of course, some people are
still finding their feet, still
recovering from the trauma
of the cyclones and floods
that took lives, destroyed
homes and devastated
communities.
By the end of August, more than 40,000 individuals
will have received assistance from the Premier’s
Disaster Relief Appeal. This has been made possible
because of the generosity of people like you.
People from throughout our State and around
the country and the world donated more than
$273 million to the Appeal.
Every cent is going to people affected by the
natural disasters. Not a cent is being spent on
administration, none of the committee members
received payment and all interest earned on
donations is put into the fund.
Image courtesy of Queensland Reconstruction Authority
Above: The existing town of Grantham with the proposed new
development in the background.
By 31 August, we will have paid out more than
$1 million a day and nearly $50,000 every hour
since the Appeal was established.
We aim to have distributed all of the money
to Queenslanders in the space of just over six months
– one of the fastest distributions of relief funds on
this scale in our country.
By way of comparison, money from the Victoria Bush
Fire Appeal is still being distributed two years after
those terrible events.
I thank the distribution committee and those working
day and night to process applications.
Most of all, I send a heartfelt thank you to everyone
who donated to the Appeal. Your compassion
and generosity is making a real difference in the lives
of Queenslanders in need.

Appeal grants for
Lockyer Valley relocations
Grants of $35,000 from the Premier’s Disaster Relief
Appeal are being offered to victims of the devastating
flooding in the Lockyer Valley to help them move their
home to higher ground in Grantham.
Residents can choose to be part of a voluntary
relocation and land-swap, being accelerated by the
designation of Grantham as a reconstruction area under
the Queensland Reconstruction Authority’s powers.
The special grants will cover the costs of things that
won’t be paid for by insurance, such as reconnecting
power and water to new or relocated houses.
Homeowners living in Grantham, Helidon, Murphy’s
Creek, Postman’s Ridge, Withcott and other affected
nearby areas in the Lockyer Valley are eligible for
the grant.
The Building Services Authority will deliver the grants.
To find out more call the BSA on (07) 3225 2937.
Russell Muller,Tully
Russell Muller’s 100-year-old Tully home had recently been renovated when Tropical Cyclone Yasi tore through
Far North Queensland.
The cyclone ripped off the roof, but most of the house was left standing. However, subsequent weeks of rain
severely damaged the interior, ruined hand-carved posts and stairs and destroyed wiring.
“There was heaps of beautiful timberwork throughout the house. It was almost a write-off,” Russell said.
“I didn’t want to walk away from the house. I wanted to get in there and get it back to its former glory.”
Russell received just over $50,000 from the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal to help him get underway.
“The money’s certainly been a help,” he said.
“I’m in the process of organising a builder. I know him very well and he knows I’m a very good tradesman
so he’s going to come down and use me to work on the house.”
“The people of Queensland and all around Australia have given their hearts and donated the money and that’s
certainly going to go a long way to getting me back on track, I’m sure of that.”
Jim and Joyce Skene, Taylors Beach
When Tropical Cyclone Yasi hit in February, Jim
and Joyce Skene took refuge with family in Mackay.
When they returned to their Taylors Beach home
a few days later, they found devastation.
“When we got back the whole place was a shambles,”
Joyce said.
“The whole frontage had to be replaced and all our
furniture. We couldn’t stay here. My son is next door.
He had just put up a house, luckily, so we moved
in there with him.”
Without insurance, the Skenes were in desperate
need of assistance. They received $33,700 from
the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.
And Joyce wants to pass on her gratitude.
“Our sincere thanks to the people who have donated
money to the Appeal,” she said.
“It’s helped so much. We were so very depressed,
you know. We couldn’t have done it ourselves.
My husband’s 90 and I’m 87. We wouldn’t have
known where to turn.”

Appeal helps people in need through
St Vincent de Paul
St Vincent de Paul is making special payments to people who are still
struggling to cope with the effects of the natural disasters.
Vinnies was given $10 million from the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.
Money is available for individuals or families who were directly affected
by the floods or cyclones and are experiencing significant and continuing
hardship, with limited capacity to recover without assistance.
People who may not have met the eligibility criteria for the Appeal or who
are waiting for insurance payouts can apply to St Vincent de Paul.
To find out more call St Vincent de Paul on 1300 633 343.

St Vinnies volunteer
Jim Devereaux, of Fig Tree Pocket, exemplifies the great community spirit
shown in the wake of the natural disasters.
Jim, a St Vincent de Paul Society member and volunteer, has been knocking on
doors throughout flood-affected areas in Brisbane’s west and answering phone
calls since January. He’s also been helping flood victims access Premier’s
Disaster Relief Appeal money via St Vincent de Paul.
Jim tells some heart-wrenching stories. In one case, Vinnies provided a family
with clothing and bedding and covered the cost of food for eight weeks while
their home was treated for toxic mould caused by the flood.
“It’s really quite emotional seeing how people are living and hearing the
stories they have to share,” Jim said.
But the feeling of community has never been stronger. One man in Goodna
had been repairing his own house, and also buying items to help out his
neighbours. Vinnies is now assisting him by reimbursing his expenses.
“We’re trying to lend a helping hand, whatever the situation. People are still really hurting and we want them
to know they’re not forgotten,” Jim said.
St Vincent de Paul has received a $10 million allocation from the Premier’s Disaster Relief Appeal.
