Rotary

International

President’s

Message

for August

August 2019

During 2019-2020, I am encouraging Rotarians and

Rotaractors to grow Rotary. We must grow our

service, we must grow the impact of our projects,

but, most importantly, we must grow our membership

so that we can achieve more.

Let us try a new approach to membership, one

that is more organized and strategic. I am asking

every club to form an active membership committee

consisting of people of different backgrounds

who will look methodically at the leadership of the

community.

Your club's membership committee will then apply

Rotary's classification system — designed to

ensure that the range of professions in your

community is well represented — to identify

potential leaders with the skill, the talent, and the

character that will strengthen your club. If your

club's membership committee is unsure how to

proceed, look to the club membership committee

checklist on Rotary.org for clearly defined steps to

organizing its work.

How else will we connect to grow Rotary? We will

also form new types of clubs — either independent

clubs or satellite clubs — with different

meeting experiences and engaging service

opportunities, not just where there is no Rotary,

but also where Rotary is already thriving. No Rotary

club in the world can possibly serve all

segments of its community. Therefore, we must

organize new clubs to engage the community

leaders who cannot connect with our existing

clubs.

Growing Rotary is all about taking the connections

that make our organization unique in the world

and strengthening and multiplying them. Let us

commit ourselves to growing Rotary and to

welcoming the next diverse generation of women

and men as Rotary Connects the World.

Dear fellow Makati Premier District Rotarians:

We enter the second month of the Rotary year

and significantly, August is observed as Membership

and New Club Development Month.

Quite fitting, as we, being members of a 3-year

old fledgling club, celebrate our being Rotarians,

the continuing evolution of our club and

the good things we do for the benefit of humanity.

There are many ways to join in the celebration,

and here some suggested tips to get us started:

Say it loud, say it proud! Let everyone in our

social network know that we are a proud member

by changing our Twitter and Facebook profile

to the I’m a Proud Member.

Watch and share. Download videos on membership

from the Rotary website

www.rotary.org and discover the many advantages

and benefits of being a Rotarian,

Let us Exchange ideas on how we can successfully

expand our membership.

What does Rotary mean to you? As members

of the Rotary Club of Makati Premier District

family, share with us what you feel as a Rotarian

and the wonderful experiences you have

encountered.

I also thank you for your presence at our 3rd

Handover and Induction Ceremony that was

held last August 2 at the Dusit Thani Hotel. It

was indeed a very memorable and fun experience.

Finally, I share with you the 2nd issue of our

Premier Club Newsletter where our meetings,

events and other activities are highlight.

ROTARY

INFORMATION

As the oldest service club in the

world, Rotary club members represent a

cross-section of the community's owners, executives,

managers, political leaders, and

professionals – People who make decisions

and influence policy. Club members have

many opportunities for humanitarian

service, both locally and internationally.

Top 10 Reasons to Join a Rotary Club

Professional Networking

A founding principle of Rotary was to meet periodically

to enjoy camaraderie and enlarge one’s circle

of business, community and professional

acquaintances. As the oldest service club in the

world, Rotary club members represent a crosssection

of the community’s owners, executives,

managers, political leaders, and professionals –

People who make decisions and influence policy.

Service Opportunities

Club members have many opportunities for humanitarian

service, both locally and internationally.

Service programs address such concerns as

health care, hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and the environment.

Rotarians experience the fulfillment

that comes from giving back to the community.

International Awareness

With more than 34,000 clubs in over 200 countries

& geographical areas, Rotarians gain an understanding

of humanitarian issues through international

service projects and exchange programs.

One of Rotary’s highest objectives is to build goodwill

and peace throughout the world.

Friendship

Rotary was founded on fellowship, an ideal that

remains a major attraction of membership today.

Club members enjoy the camaraderie with likeminded

professionals, and club projects offer additional

opportunities to develop enduring friendships.

Rotary club members who travel have

friendly contacts in almost every city in the world.

Good Citizenship

Weekly Rotary club programs keep members informed

about what is taking place in the community,

nation, and world and motivated to make a

difference.

Youth and Family

Rotary sponsors one of the world’s largest youth

exchange, educational exchange, and scholarship

programs. Rotary clubs provide innovative training

opportunities and mentoring for young leaders

and involve family members in a wide range of social

and service activities.

Entertainment

Social activities give Rotarians a chance to let loose

and have fun. Every Rotary club and district hosts

parties and social activities that offer diversions

from today’s demanding professional and personal

schedules. Conferences, conventions, assemblies,

and social events provide entertainment as

well as Rotary information, education, and service.

Ethical Environment

Encouraging high ethical standards in one’s profession

and respect for all worthy vocations has

been a hallmark of Rotary from its earliest days. In

their business and professional lives, Rotarians

abide by The Four-Way Test:

Of the things we think, say or do:

1. Is it the TRUTH?

2. Is it FAIR to all concerned?

3. Will it BUILD GOODWILL and BETTER FRIEND-

SHIPS?

4. Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

REVIEW OF STATUS OF APPLICATIONS FOR GLOBAL GRANT

6 AUGUST 2019

Working to serve others also means working to source funding. On August 6, we met to review the status

of our applications for Global Grants for our advocacies (1) early cancer detection involving the purchase

of a mobile bus that will be outfitted to test for breast and cervical cancer (2) early literacy for 1stgrade

public schools with English animated videos.

DISTRICT ROTARACT-INTERACT ASSEMBLY

24 AUGUST 2019. ASIA PACIFIC COLLEGE, MAGALLANES, MAKATI CITY

Last Aug. 24, 2019, I was very honored and happy

to be selected to attend the DRIA (District

Interact Rotaract Assembly) organized by the

Rotary Club International held at the Asia Pacific

College.

DRIA aims to bring together young people to

develop their skills needed to be an effective leader.

Through this event, I was given the opportunity

to hone my leadership abilities that will help me

perform my duties well as the President of the

Supreme Pupil Government of F. Benitez Elementary

School.

The event was attended mostly by high school

officers of different schools. I was thankful that

FBESIII is one of the two elementary schools that

went to that event. After having an election for the

overall presidency, elected President John Philip S.

Chan encouraged us that we must believe that we

can do more as leaders.

I was amazed that the Rotary Clubs can think of an

event like this that really catered to the needs of

the youth, specially the students. Now, the students

that attended the event are more determined

to influence the student body to not steal,

not to drugs and to not form any bad habits.

I hope they will continue doing this event. I will be

forever grateful for this opportunity.

Rebgeere Liandy B. Canaya

Interact President &SPG President of FBESIII

DRIA 2019 with the theme "Rotary Connects

the World" was an opportunity for us young

Interact of the Rotary of Makati Premier

District from F. Benitez Elementary School to

be the representatives on that event that was

held on August 24, 2019 at the Asia Pacific

College.

Through this, we know what an Interact/Rotaract

means. We developed our skills on how to be an

Interact/Rotaract and we meet new friends

Interactors and Rotaractors. This is the first step to

be a good and responsible Rotarian in the future.

Atty. Amador Z. Tolentino, the Champion Governor

of Rotary International District 3830 said that

being a Rotaract/Interact is not an easy thing to

do, because its a responsibility. For us to be like a

27

Rotarian someday needs to have a great heart for

the community to be able to sustain a good

organization.

At the Plenary Session, moderator Dra. Mildred

Vitangcol, panelists Ms. Janine Astrande, Mr. Rowlan

Legaspi, Mr. Migs Bermido and Dra. Joji Tan

answered and explained certain topics regarding

what to do to be in the organization. Dra Joji said

that it does not need money to become a Rotaract.

What you need is the ability and perseverance

to help others in your own ways to be able to

reach out to your community and to the world.

ROTARY NEWS

VALUE OF ROTARY VOLUNTEERING

A special report prepared for Rotary International by the

Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society Studies estimated

the value of Rotary member volunteer hours at $850

million a year.

That Rotary members log a lot of volunteer hours

should come as no surprise to anyone familiar

with the organization. But a new report just released

by Johns Hopkins University provides a

powerful look at the impact of all those volunteer

hours.

The special report prepared for Rotary International

by the Johns Hopkins Center for Civil Society

Studies found that Rotary members had volunteered

a total of 5.8 million hours within a fourweek

survey period. Extrapolating those results

over an entire year, the report gave a conservative

estimate of nearly 47 million hours of volunteer

effort generated by Rotary members in a typical

year.

The report then analyzed the economic impact of

all those hours and estimated the value conservatively

at $850 million a year, if communities had to

pay for the services that Rotary volunteers provide.

Rotary, with the help of Johns Hopkins University,

is the first global service organization to conduct

an empirical analysis of its volunteer’s impact using

an internationally sanctioned definition of volunteer

work. The authors of the report noted in

their conclusion that at each stop, the analysis had

chosen the most conservative estimates.

“This makes the results reported here all the more

remarkable,” the authors noted. “Translated into

economic terms, Rotary is annually generating a

scale of social and economic problem-solving

effort that is worth nearly nine times more than it

costs the organization to produce.”

Rotary General Secretary John Hewko said the figure

doesn't even include the in-kind contributions

and the money that Rotary clubs and the Rotary

Foundation raise every year. In addition, the figure

doesn’t include the volunteer work of the many

relatives and friends of Rotary that members often

involve in a project, or that of members of Rotaract,

Interact, or the Community Corps, that would

easily double the estimate of Rotary’s economic

impact.

through Rotary service.
