Year in July

RI President July Message
I love to travel! I even enjoy the mundane process of getting
from here to there. But last year, my wife, Gay, and I
had one of those experiences that would strain the optimism
of even the most cheerful traveler. We found ourselves
with six hours to wait, at an airport where we were
not scheduled to be, on a day we had not planned still to
be traveling, having woken up that morning at a hotel unknown
to us the night before. It was one of those days.
As we waited at John F. Kennedy International Airport in
New York City, Gay and I took a walk to people watch. We
went from one end of the terminal to the other and back,
looking at every gate, every destination, every group of
people waiting for their flights. Each gate was its own island
of humanity. When we walked down the center of the
concourse, we were in New York, moving along with everyone
in one river. But when you veered off into those seats,
you left that current and landed on an island. You were
already in Delhi or Paris or Tel Aviv.
As we started our walk, I thought: "All these different people,
all these different countries, all in one place. This is like
Rotary!" But as we walked past gate after gate, I realized
something. It was not like Rotary at all. Because everyone
in that river was heading for an island. And every island
stayed an island. The people heading to Taipei might be
talking to one another, but they were not talking to the
people heading to Cairo or Lagos.
Contrast that with Rotary. Rotary allows us to connect with
one another, in deep and meaningful ways, across our
differences. It connects us with people we would never
otherwise have met, who are more like us than we ever
could have known. It connects us with our communities, to
professional opportunities, and to the people who need
our help.
Connection is what makes the experience of Rotary so very
different from walking along that concourse at JFK Airport.
In Rotary, none of us is an island. All of us are in Rotary
together, whoever we are, wherever we are from, whatever
language we speak or traditions we follow. We are all
connected to one another — part of our communities and
members not only of our clubs, but also of the global community
to which we all belong.
This connection is what lies at the heart of the Rotary experience.
It is what brings us to Rotary. It is why we stay.
Please join your fellow Rotarians on this journey as Rotary
Connects the World.

GETTING TO KNOW THE
2019-2020 GOVERNOR
OF DISTRICT 3830
ADOR TOLENTINO
Governor 2019-20
District 3830
Rotary Club of Paranaque Southwest
Governor Ador Tolentino is a lawyer by profession, teacher
by passion, and a servant-leader by heart. He hails from a
small town in Ilocos Norte called Pinili. A certified
“probinsyano”, his life’s early influences came from his
family of teachers, farmers, writers, and musicians.
He is a proud product of the public school system. A
consistent honor student, he obtained his degrees in
Philosophy and Law from the University of the Philippines
in Diliman, Quezon City. A student leader in UP, he served
as College Representative to the UP Student Council in
SY1985-1986, giving him the opportunity to be part of UP
contingent during the 1986 People Power Revolution.
He was a working student while in law school. He taught
Philosophy for two years at the UP Los Baños Campus
during the day while taking up Law in UP Diliman in the
evening.
From the academe, he transferred to a government
agency that catered to the indigenous people. This work
opened his heart to serving the marginalized sectors.
Governor Ador has been in the private practice of law for
24 years, specializing in litigation, corporate, and appellate
practice. In 2003, he co-founded the law firm TOLENTINO
CORVERA MACASAET & REIG. From a law firm of only seven,
his law firm has now grown to a medium size of forty.
A very active officer of the Integrated Bar of the Philippines
(IBP), he is a Past President of the IBP Pasay-Parañaque-
Las Pinas-Muntinlupa Chapter. Thereafter, he served as
Governor of the IBP Southern Luzon Region covering 12
IBP Chapters composed of some 13,000 lawyer-members.
Currently, he serves as the Chief of Staff of the IBP and
concurrently as Presidential Liaison to the Judiciary.
In spite of his hectic lawyering, Governor Ador still finds
time to teach. He is an accredited lecturer on Property Law
and Oral Advocacy and Trial Techniques by the Supreme
Court’s Mandatory Continuing Legal Education Board. He
also teaches Property Law at the Philippine Law School.
As a servant-leader, he has found inspiration in serving
others through Rotary for the last 18 years.
He joined Rotary in 2001, and since then he has become
deeply involved in various humanitarian works.
He served as the 13th President of the Rotary Club of
Paranaque Southwest, a small club of only 22 members
then which he steered to become a strong club during his
presidency so much so that after his term, his club was
recognized by the District as Most Outstanding Club (Small
Category) for the RY 2009-2010.
Following his club presidency, he served in the District in
various capacities, most notable of which are being District
Vocational Service Chair, District Rotaract Chair, District
Youth Service Chair, Assistant Governor, Deputy Senior
Assistant Governor for Avenues of Service, and Rotary
Academy Executive Director.
Governor Ador was awarded with The RI Avenues of
Service Citation in RY 2011-2012. As a consistent giver, he
is a member of the Paul Harris Society. This RY 2018-2019,
he and Spouse Beng have been recognized as Major
Donor Level 1 to the Rotary Foundation.
Governor Ador is happily married for 17 years to the lovely
Ms. Evelyn “Beng” Salomon-Tolentino, an Assistant Vice
President at BPI Family Savings Bank, Head Office.
He has two grown up children by his first marriage: Kyla, a
CPA in California, works as Senior Associate and Digital
Accelerator at the global accounting firm, Pricewaterhouse
Cooper LA Branch; and Axel, who has a degree in Bachelor
of Arts in Japanese. Both graduated from the California
State University, LA Campus.
As a legal advocate, Governor Ador has chosen Peace as
the centerpiece of his governorship. He believes that
“Everything we do in Rotary, consciously or unconsciously,
has an underlying connection to Peace”!
