Welcome to this latest edition of the Manly 

Harbour Village Lifestyle Magazine. 

Manly Harbour Village is a unique destination 

within the Greater Brisbane area. This quaint 

waterfront village precinct overlooks the largest 

man made small boat harbour on the East coast 

of Australia. Manly Boat Harbour is the nearest 

point from the CBD to access Moreton Bay, 

providing moorings for over 1800 vessels. It 

is home for the Royal Queensland Yacht Club, 

Wynnum Manly Yacht Club and the Moreton Bay 

Trailer Boat Club. 

The Village has an eclectic mix of traders 

including fashion, boating and accessory, plus 

a mix of restaurants and eateries that make it 

one of Brisbane’s great dining precincts. There 

are just on 2,000 restaurant and cafe seats in the 

village and around the harbour. 

This edition has a special feature on preparing 

for weddings. Most weekends, there are one or 

two weddings held at the yacht and boat clubs 

around the Manly Boat Harbour. 

Little Bayside Park, adjacent to the harbour, 

functions like our “Town Square”. Every Sunday 

the Manly Creative Markets are a feature, 

while on the third Saturday of each month the 

famous Jan Powers Farmers Market supplies 

South East Queensland farm fresh produce to 

satisfy the most discerning food lovers. On the 

first Saturday of the month, Little Bayside Park 

hosts free “Movies in the Park” right beside the 

harbour.

Fun in the Park 

Big Fun at Little Bayside Park BY HARVEY SHORE 

The Lord Mayor of Brisbane 

recently commented that Little 

Bayside Park in Manly is “…the 

busiest park in Brisbane.” 

Indeed, the huge number of regular and special 

events organised in Little Bayside Park by the 

Manly Chamber of Commerce and Bayside 

PCYC all year round has made it a ‘happening 

place’ for both local residents and visitors to 

Manly, who are attracted to the park in their 

thousands almost every weekend. 

Among the regular events taking place in Little 

Bayside Park are Manly’s Creative Markets, 

held every Sunday and attracting more stalls all 

the time. On the first Saturday evening of each 

month, the Chamber of Commerce organises 

Movies In The Park (the Chamber also reserves 

Manly’s local RSL Hall in case of bad weather.) 

On the third Saturday of every month, the park 

is packed with food stalls and entertainers 

who come from far and wide to be part of the 

celebrated Jan Powers’ Fresh Food Market. 

In addition to these regular events, the Manly 

Chamber of Commerce organises two special 

‘Days In The Park’ each year (such as last year’s 

Mother’s Day In The Park); and the Brisbane City 

Council organises a regular Bands In The Park 

program. 

Major annual events also rely on Little Bayside 

Park, including the 20,000-strong Manly 

Halloween Street Party, and the 4BC/4BH 

Breakfast In The Burbs, which attracted 

thousands of visitors and major national TV stars 

to Manly last year. 

Surprisingly, Manly has been able to absorb 

these weekend crowds without causing 

significant local problems. Indeed, there is still 

room in Manly for family gatherings and private 

events, and during the week Little Bayside Park 

becomes an oasis of waterfront calm and a 

delightful place to sit or stroll. 

Then it’s on to the next weekend, and the fun 

in Little Bayside Park at Manly begins all over 

again.

Wedding fashion for the Mother of 

the Bride & Groom 

When you hear the words Mother of 

the Bride or Mother of the Groom, 

you open a fashion challenge! It 

seems mums of brides or grooms 

are getting younger and fashion 

for this special occasion is not 

offering as much as they should 

for the young mums of today. That 

is why at Smooche Boutique we

It is always a good idea to see 

what colour the mum of the bride 

is wearing before the mum of the 

groom starts looking. Also knowing

suitable tie to complement their 

wives outfit. This always looks great 

in photographs. 

As Bridesmaids come in all shapes 

and sizes, finding a style that suits 

eveyone can sometimes be difficult. 

There are designers that work on 

the theory that you must order 

your dresses in advance. This is a 

wise idea as mostly, when you see 

a dress in a boutique that you like, 

you don’t get the flexibility in sizes 

to cater for all the attendants.

Here’s a handy planning schedule to help you organise your day... 

9-12 months before the wedding: 

Announce your engagement to friends and family. 

Pick a special date to begin your lives together. 

Discuss what your budget will be and who is to be contributing 

Interview wedding planners if you’re using one. 

Pick the ceremony site and meet with the officiant. 

Work on the guest list to get a rough head count. 

Visit reception sites and reserve one. 

Begin shopping for your wedding gown. 

If you’re planning to lose a little weight for the wedding, start now. 


Choose the members of your wedding party. 

Select a caterer. 

Enroll in a bridal registry. 

Order your wedding gown. 

Shop for bridesmaids dresses. 

Pick a photographer and videographer. 

Hire a florist. 

Start thinking about where you’d like to go for your honeymoon. 

Send save-the-date cards, especially if your wedding is on a holiday 

weekend. 


Order wedding stationary (place cards, thank you cards, etc.). 

Shop for the perfect wedding cake. 

Hire your wedding-day transportation (carriage, limousine, etc.) 

Book your favorite hair stylist and makeup artist.

What do those wedding traditions mean... 

Something old symbolises continuity with the bride’s family and the past. 

Something new means optimism and hope for the bride’s new life ahead 

Something borrowed an item from a happily married friend or family member, whose good fortune in 

marriage is supposed to carry over to the new bride. 

Something blue to symbolise love, modesty, and fidelity. 

A silver sixpence in her shoe represents wealth and financial security. For optimum fortune, the 

sixpence should be in the left shoe. These days, a silver coin such as a five cent piece can be

Order tuxedos for the groom and groomsmen. 

Meet with the caterer to go over menus, wine selections, etc. 

Order the wedding cake. 

Select wedding ceremony and reception music. 

If you plan on writing your own vows start writing them now. 

4-8 weeks before the wedding: 

Mail wedding invitations 6 to 8 weeks ahead of your wedding date. 

Do a hair and make up run through with your wedding veil on. 

2-4 weeks before the wedding: 

Work on the seating arrangements for the reception. 

Confirm details with the photographer, florist, and other vendors. 

Have your final wedding dress fitting. 

Write your rehearsal-dinner toast. 

Purchase gifts for the wedding attendants. 

Compile a list of all of the wedding vendors and wedding party. 

1 week before the wedding: 

Put any money due on the wedding day in envelopes for easy 

distribution. 

Give the caterer a final head count. 

Find someone to take the cake knife, toasting glasses, etc. to the 

reception. 

Get final beauty treatments (manicure, facial, waxing, brow shaping, etc.). 

Pack for the honeymoon. 

The day of the wedding: 

Relax and remain calm. 

Remember to eat something. You may be so busy that you forget! 

Allow yourself at least two hours to get dressed.

Accommodation 

Manly is a place for all seasons... BY HARVEY SHORE 

Manly Harbour Village is 

celebrated for the wide range 

of events, big and small, that 

occur here throughout the year. 

From the annual Halloween Street Party, 

to major and minor yachting regattas, boat 

races and fishing competitions; to monthly 

Jan Powers Farmers Market, and Sunday 

Creative Market, weekend weddings and 

casual family gatherings; Manly events 

attract thousands of visitors to the village 

on a regular basis. While here, many of 

these visitors seek a place to stay for a few 

days or weeks, and Manly offers two large 

award-winning accommodation venues, 

and a wealth of smaller bijou options which 

all possess the unique three C’s. They are 

all Cosy, Comfortable and C-side. 

The Manly Marina Cove Motel, right opposite 

the Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron, is 

one of the larger accommodation options in 

Manly. 

Resident Managers Lyn and Rob Keen are, 

as their name suggests, determined to make 

their waterside AAA 4-star venue the perfect 

spot to relax away from home. 

As a result of their efforts, the Motel recently 

won the inaugural Moreton Bay Tourism

Kings Indian Cuisine on Cambridge Parade 

is the latest restaurant to win an award in Manly. 

Chefs Kunaal and Sapna Verma won the 2010 

Quest Newspapers’ Business Achievers Award 

for Formal Dining. The couple have already won 

a string of awards since they arrived in Australia 

from New Delhi in the 90s, and opened their 

first Indian restaurant on the NSW Central 

Coast. These include Best Indian Restaurant 

in Australia (2002 & 2005), and Best Specialty 

Restaurant on the Central Coast (1996 & 

2006). In addition to serving tasty Indian food, 

they also hold occasional cooking classes. 

If that doesn’t curry favour with you, try the 

Thai Boat Restaurant a few doors up. 

Celebrated chef Angkana Meissner (who 

learnt her skills in southern Thailand) runs 

this Manly award-winner. Her restaurant won 

the Quest Newspapers’ Business Achievers 

Award for Formal Dining in 2009. People also 

line up to attend her Thai Cooking classes 

each weekend; and her many fans swear she 

cooks the best Thai food in Brisbane. 

Shirley and Stanley Chin took over the Marina 

Crest Chinese Restaurant (with help from 

daughters Twina and Katie) after running 

Goondiwindi’s best Chinese for 20 years. Their 

arrival in Manly two years ago produced a big 

leap forward in the quality of local Chinese food 

– both sit-down and take-away. These days, 

there’s always a crowd lining up for the tables 

or the take-away at their restaurant.

Clayton Debenham are the Barramundi 

Boys. Together they’ve spent the last 

decade serving the best seafood in

Sails Bistro in The Manly Hotel recently won 

a five star rating from Brisbane City Council’s 

Eat Safe Brisbane scheme. Open seven days a 

week all year from 7am till late, it is known for 

top quality pub meals cooked by a new team 

of international chefs. Manager Cathy Purcell 

is also proud of the excellent service for which 

her staff are renowned. 

The Ramp @ Moreton Bay Trailer Boat 

Club is run by chef Rhian Stanton, who 

previously worked at Parliament House, at 

Suncorp Stadium and and at Finnigan’s. The 

venue has a direct waterfront view over Manly 

Harbour laterals, and its Sunday Brunch has 

long had a reputation. 

Boats Café, Bar and Restaurant in the 7 

Days Market is run by Troy Campbell and his 

sister Christie Cowling. Large picture windows 

frame the harbour and fill their family café with 

light. Their coffee & cakes fill locals with delight. 

An impressive venue. 

Celtic Corner Bar & Bistro, opposite the 

Manly Pub on the corner Cambridge Parade 

& Stratton Terrace, has been run for the last 

five years by Niall and Sandra Cunningham, 

with coffee queen Tracey Anderson on the 

espresso machine. The place rocks to Irish 

musicians every Friday night, has Irish beer on 

tap, and serves the most delicious Guinness 

Pies in Brisbane seven days a week. 

Manly Deck, upstairs above Celtic Corner, 

was a noisy nightclub until Emma Mullins and 

Naomi Martin took it over, and worked hard to 

create their vision of a relaxed and comfortable 

modern restaurant with a cool view. It has 

an attached backpacker hostel, and always 

seems to attract a friendly international crowd. 

Manly Village Pizzeria & Trattoria, beside the 

Fresh Seafood Market in Cambridge Parade, was 

recently taken over by Tim and Lisa Cox, with 

partners Amedeo and Tanya Vicario. Tim says 

their aim is to serve the best Italian food, pizza 

and coffee. They also stock the best Gelato this 

side of San Crispino in Rome. 

Wilsons Boathouse Seafood Restaurant 

sits near the tip of Norfolk Point, just past 

the Coast Guard station. Customers flock 

here for the breathtaking views of vessels 

coming and going from Manly Boat Harbour, 

and owner Neil Jedid compliments that with 

a memorable menu. Wilsons is a stunning 

venue for lunch on a sunny day, and it’s also 

open for dinner. 

Cuttlefish, on the Esplanade, is run by Clare & 

Darren Emmett. They like to vary the menu with 

daily themes, such as Tapas Tuesday and Fish 

Thursday, but they serve most other meals for 

lunch and dinner all week.

Boat Harbour as one of the major gateways to 

the Moreton Bay Marine Park. 

A feasibility study, funded by the Brisbane City 

Council’s Community Grants Program and 

conducted by consultants, has concluded that 

the Moreton Bay Discovery Centre is viable 

and would meet significant community needs, 

based on market research and community and 

stakeholder consultation.

Centre will include:

support through a centralised booking service 

for tours, attractions and accommodation;

The Discovery Centre will provide a service 

for day visitors, mainly from the Brisbane

interested in nature based tourism, backpackers 

and seniors.

Coast Guard 

Coast Guard Brisbane, based in Manly Boat 

Harbour since 1973, is regarded by experts as the 

best all-volunteer marine search and rescue team 

in Queensland. 

The flotilla has over 100 members serving at its 

Manly base every weekend and public holiday and 

on call 24/7. The flotilla also has over a thousand 

Associate Members – boat-owners who have 

joined its Marine Assist program and now have help 

at sea for free. 

Coast Guard’s Marine Assist program is like the 

RACQ afloat. Members who break down, run out 

of fuel, or suffer any other problem at sea, can 

summon Coast Guard help for free. The program 

recently expanded, so members now enjoy that 

free 24-hour marine assistance State-wide. 

Steve Fleming, commander of Coast Guard 

Brisbane, urges all boaties to join Marine Assist. 

“Once you join, you’ll be an Associate Member of 

our flotilla, which means free help whenever you’re 

in trouble. The annual fee is tiny, compared to the 

cost of a single commercial tow if you break down, 

and it protects you all year around, no matter where 

you are or what help you need,” he said. “It’s the 

best safety net you’ll ever have at sea.”

The Bayside Police Citizens Youth Club 

is calling all local youth and the young 

at heart who wish to test their busking 

abilities.

This could include singing, dancing,

The Manly Hotel’s Greening Program Continues to Grow... 

An efficiency drive at The Manly Hotel is taking a 

broad approach to sustainability that addresses 

internal, staff and community issues. 

In an innovative program that tunes into 

community environmental concerns, The Manly 

Hotel is rewarding customers for sustainable 

choices, and assisting the environment and 

community with recycling programs such as the 

can recycling in place at Darling Point Special 

School. 

Project Manager of the hotel’s Sustainable Manly 

Program, Karin Dawson, said the 12,000 members 

of The Manly Hotel’s loyalty program were being 

offered extra rewards points for refusing plastic 

bags when visiting the hotel’s bottle shop. 

“It’s an initiative which has been running for a few 

years now, but we’re seeing promising results and 

as well as keeping bags away from the bay we are 

seeing savings to the hotel as well,” she said. 

To increase sustainability within The Manly, 

flow restrictors and energy efficient lighting and 

equipment are in use throughout the facility, along 

with five rainwater tanks for garden maintenance. 

The changes are expected to save around 

100,000 litres of water each year, and are 

being complemented by a comprehensive staff 

education program. 

“Eco-efficiency is a priority topic in staff induction 

programs, the staff handbook, and at quarterly 

staff breakfasts,” Ms Dawson said. 

“Our aim is to reinforce eco-efficient practices so 

that it becomes second nature for all staff to stop 

and think about how much water or energy we’re 

using, or if we could be producing less waste.” 

“Being so close to the bay, eco-efficiency has 

always been on the agenda for The Manly Hotel.” 

“We’re an important part of this beautiful 

environment and we have to take care of it.” 

“Of course what we’re also seeing through the 

EPA ecoBiz program is that the changes we’re 

making are good for business as well, and will 

save on running costs and allow us to continue to 

engage with the community in a very relevant and 

important way.” 

All up, The Manly has invested many thousands 

of dollars into the program, and is expecting 

significant cost savings, in addition to the 

environmental benefits. 


On the water 

Paddlers Ready!! Attention!! … Go Manly Dragons!! 

This is the familiar chant that visitors on 

Manly Esplanade often hear as the crew 

from Manly Dragon Boat Club trains on 

the waters of Manly Boat Harbour. With a 

team of 20 paddlers in a long boat fitted 

with a decorative dragon head and tail – it 

is a sight to behold. 

Dragon boat racing is the epitome of a 

‘team sport’ and appeals to both men 

and women of all ages and fitness levels. 

The Manly Dragon Boat Club is only four 

years old and has quickly grown to be one 

of Queensland’s most exciting dragon 

boat clubs. With 80 members, the club 

has competed at all major Queensland 

regatta events and this year achieved 

bronze medals in the Queensland 

Championships for the Grand Master 

category. This year was also the first time

FOLLOWING an Australia wide bid for the 

World Championships, the International 

Laser Class Association in England has 

selected the Royal Queensland Yacht 

Squadron (RQYS) in Manly, as host for 

the two events in 2012. 

Despite strong competition, the successful 

bid secured both the Laser Radial Men’s 

and Youth World Championships to be 

held on Moreton Bay. The 2010 World 

championships ended in July and were 

held in Largs, Scotland. 

The Royal Queensland Yacht Squadron was 

thrilled to win the bid for the 2012 events as 

the club plays a major part in supporting the 

growth of the sport within Australia. 

‘It is a huge honour to be selected to host 

any world championship, particularly the 

Laser World Championships as it is the 

largest fleet of boats in the world. There will 

be over 300 young adults coming for the 

environment. Our growing fleet of four 

dragon boats enables us to provide 

training to cater for all groups with ladies’, 

men’s and mixed teams in premiers, 

masters (>40 yrs) and grand masters (>50 

yrs) divisions. 

Our members come from a diverse 

range of vocations and a wide range of 

ages but all share the many benefits 

of Dragon Boating including improved 

fitness, endurance, team building, social 

interaction and the opportunity to make 

new friends. 

Training on water is conducted on 

Saturday and Sunday mornings and 

some weekday mornings/evenings and is 

complemented by gym based sessions to 

improve core strength and conditioning. 

We offer training for all levels of fitness— 

social and competitive. Training takes 

place all year round either within the 

protected waterways of Manly Boat 

Harbour or, when conditions are suitable, 

out in Rose Bay or along the foreshore 

to Wynnum Jetty. To be on the water at 

sunrise or sunset and to have dolphins 

escort us up the channel is just an added 

Youth World’s event from every corner of 

the globe,’ Suellen Hurling, Marine Sports 

Manager, RQYS. 

The RQYS history has seen several World 

Champions as well as Gold and Silver 

medallists in both the 1973 Olympics and 

the 2008 Paralympic Games. 

More recently, Mat Belcher and Malcolm

Championships and are hot favourites 

for the Gold Medal at the 2012 Olympic 

Games.

one of Moreton Bay’s most prestigious 

yachting classics, and the winner’s 

trophy is one of Australia’s most historic 

Cups.

The race, run by the Wynnum Manly Yacht 

Club since 1976, is open to yachts from 

all clubs recognized by the Queensland 

Yachting Association. Three yachts have 

to enter as a team, and clubs may enter 

as many teams as they like. The teams 

compete in two races over the Cup 

weekend, with handicaps giving all yachts 

an equal chance of winning. 

Each year, the winner’s name is added to 

the base of the historic Saint Helena Cup, 

a solid silver 19th Century trophy with a 

fascinating history. 

Saint Helena in Moreton Bay was a prison 

island in the 1800s, notorious for housing 

some of Queensland’s toughest criminals. 

The warders kept their prisoners under lock 

and key most of the time, and spread stories 

of sharks in Moreton Bay to discourage 

escape attempts. In addition, the warders 

were armed with rifles, and encouraged to 

practice sharpshooting in full view of their 

prisoners, as a further discouragement. 

By the late 1800s, sharpshooting warders 

had founded their own St Helena Rifle 

Club. Each year, its president awarded a 

magnificent silver trophy to the warder who 

proved the best shot on the island. This twohandled 

trophy bore on its lid a finely crafted 

silver statuette of a kneeling colonial prison 

warder in period uniform and pith helmet, 

clutching a rifle to his left side. 

In 1890, prison warder Edwin Cloherty won 

the Cup. It was inscribed with his name, and 

went into his family’s heirloom cupboard. 

Clougherty’s family (who originally came 

from Ireland in 1853) had become prominent 

locally. His brother was harbourmaster 

of Brisbane (and has a peninsula on the 

Southern end of Moreton Island named

after him.) Edwin himself joined the warders 

on St Helena in 1884; but some years after 

winning the Cup, he resigned to become 

a professional fisherman, and raised 14 

children. 

One of those children, Clara, married into 

the local Patterson family and had a son 

named David William (known as Mick), who 

became an expert local yachtsman. 

In the early 1970s, Mick inherited the 

Cloherty’s famous Saint Helena Rifle Club 

Cup from his mother’s sister, Helena – who 

was the first white girl born on St Helena 

Island! 

At the time he inherited the Cup, Mick and 

his sailing mates were planning to start a 

yachting race in Moreton Bay, based on the 

famous Fastnet Race (the final race in the 

Admiral’s Cup) in the uK. Mick Patterson 

decided to donate his family’s treasured 

silver Cup as the winner’s trophy in this 

major new Moreton Bay yacht race. And 

that’s how Moreton Bay’s classic yacht race 

came to be named the Saint Helena Cup. 

In the 35 years since the race began, Mick 

Patterson has seen a lot of odd sights. The 

oddest, he says, was in 2002 when the 

crew of Two Tribes, both men and women, 

romped over the finish line stark naked. “If 

only Grandpa Cloherty could have seen 

that!”

Our local RSL celebrates its 75th birthday

The Manly Lota RSL Sub Branch 

situated at the Memorial Hall in 

Melville Terrace, Manly celebrates 

its 75th birthday in 2011. 

The Sub Branch was formed 

on 21st September, 1936 with 

many members coming from the 

Wynnum area and local citizens. 

Members are Service or ExService 

men and women and ordinary 

people who have come together 

for mutual support and to provide

within the Manly Harbour Village 

Shopping Center as an addition to

the additional facility will 

significantly increase the quality and

available to local residents.

Kurt Schafer, Jurgen Heiligenthaler and 

Norbert Schmidt emigrated from Germany 

to sunny Australia, and were looking for 

some adventure and excitement, and there 

was plenty of it here! 

Kurt and Jurgen opened up a dental 

laboratory in beautiful Manly in 1985. It was 

very successful and all worked long hours 

with their wives – Alina and Ellen – to keep 

the lab going. 

In 1994 Jurgen went back to Germany 

due to health reasons and home sickness. 

Norbert, an employee, took the place 

from Jurgen and now also runs the S & N 

Dental Lab with Kurt for the last sixteen 

years. Norbert’s wife Margit looks after the 

bookkeeping. 

SN Dental Studio now services all over the 

Bayside and also have clients in New South 

Wales, Mackay, Mt Isa and many other 

places. 

Manly is so beautiful and near to the City 

for our clients to come here easily to pick 

up and deliver orders. For our employees, 

they all love the surroundings for a nice walk 

along the Bay or to have a cup of coffee in 

one of the little coffee shops during their 

lunchbreak – if they have the time – and to 

relax from their hectic work life. 

Manly has grown so much and changed 

over the years, it’s prettier, has a lot of energy 

and entertains many visitors to the area.
