As Papa piloted the <strong>Mystery</strong> Girl to Cody<br />
the night before, Christina s<strong>at</strong> in the back of<br />
the plane finishing up a fantastic book she’d<br />
begun reading th<strong>at</strong> very morning, so she<br />
hadn’t yet asked her grandmother wh<strong>at</strong> this<br />
winter excursion was all about.<br />
“Ok, Mimi,” Christina began, “wh<strong>at</strong>’s so<br />
gre<strong>at</strong> about <strong>Yellowstone</strong>? Why do you and<br />
Papa love it so much?”<br />
“Yeah, Mimi,” said Grant, “we’ve been<br />
to a n<strong>at</strong>ional park before. Why is this one any<br />
different?”<br />
Mimi pulled her sparkly glasses from<br />
her face and smiled <strong>at</strong> her grandson. “Grant,<br />
<strong>Yellowstone</strong> isn’t just A n<strong>at</strong>ional park. It is<br />
THE n<strong>at</strong>ional park—the very first n<strong>at</strong>ional park<br />
in the entire world.”<br />
“All thanks to President Ulysses S.<br />
Grant,” said Papa. “He realized th<strong>at</strong> the land<br />
and the w<strong>at</strong>er and the wildlife here were<br />
valuable to the world. So in 1872, he declared<br />
th<strong>at</strong> the area would be a n<strong>at</strong>ional park. As it<br />
says on the Roosevelt Arch up <strong>at</strong> the North<br />
Entrance of the park, ‘<strong>Yellowstone</strong> is for the<br />
benefit and enjoyment of the people.’”<br />
