Health & safety6 TIPS FOR GOOD VAN HYGIENEDespite the easing of some restrictions, observing the new health and safety guidelines isessential while the threat of Covid-19 remains. Below, Tim Alcock, of LeaseVan.co.uk, giveshis six tips to practice good hygiene and stay safe whilst inside or using a vanHygiene is one of those things that everyoneis on top of whilst out and about in publicspaces, but it can soon be forgotten aboutin the comfort of your own space, including thatof your van.At the moment the majority of the population is moreclued up when it comes to hygiene than ever before,as would be expected during a global pandemic, butit’s important that this is related to our buildings andvehicles, and not just personal hygiene.“If you share your vanwith other people, it’simportant to ensurethat masks are wornand social distancingis observed”Getting into good habits such as cleaning downtools after each person has used and touched themand making sure everything is cleaned down beforebeing put into your van will help keep everyonesafer. If you share your van with other people whentravelling to or from work, it’s important to ensurethat masks are worn and social distancing isobserved as much as possible. It’s also importantto try and limit the amount of people who come incontact with the van.These are my six top tips when it comes topractising safe van hygiene:1FoodAs tempting as it can be to have a drivethroughor eat in your van, it’s better for you– and the hygiene in the van – if you eat outside.Find a park or pull over by a river and spend afew minutes taking in the fresh air. It means thatyou won’t find any crumbs in the van, helpingkeep it tidier and more hygienic. Any rubbish youmay carry should also be disposed of straightaway. Keeping your van tidy is definitely morehygienic, and it will have a positive impact on theway employers and customers look at you.2SanitiserHand sanitiser is one of the easiest waysto stop any germs you pick up beingtransferred into the van. Get into the habit ofalways sanitising or cleaning your hands beforeyou get into the van to reduce the number ofgerms in the cab. Keeping sanitiser about yourperson, and using it before you open the door is agreat habit to get into.3PassengersIf you normally travel with a passenger,it’s important that social distancing ismaintained at all times. It should also becomea habit to wear a face mask when sharing thecab with another person. Try to also reduce thenumber of people that come into contact with thevehicle as much as possible.4CleanGive your van a good clean inside with anantiseptic wipe at the end of every day orin-between jobs. Pay special attention to placesyou touch a lot, such as the steering wheel andgear stick. However, make sure you don’t ignorethe harder-to-reach areas, such as pockets anddashboards, as this is often where most of thedirt collects.5ToolsWipe down all your tools as they enterthe van to ensure unwanted germs aren’tbrought in. This is especially important if severalpeople have been touching the tools – althoughthey should also be cleaned in between uses.6PPEDepending on the type of PPE you use andhow close you come in contact with otherpeople whilst on the job, it may be necessary towear a new set as you enter each new buildingor place of work.
